If you're interested in astrology, PGA cleanup, and the most comprehensive preview of the Senior PGA Championship, this is the episode for you! Still basking in the afterglow of Scottie's win at the PGA, Andy and Brendan are in high spirits for this Wednesday episode. They first debate what a fair over-under is for Scottie Scheffler's career major wins and emphasize how hard it is to sustain an elite level of play for ten years. The two then do some more PGA wrap up and briefly look ahead to Oakmont and Royal Portrush, where they expect Jon Rahm to be a contender. On the PGA Tour, Scottie will tee it up again in Dallas for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Joining him there are Corey Pavin, Olin Browne, and David Frost, leading Brendan to question whether these olds will be competitive at Colonial. After making some fire picks for the week, this episode turns into a full-on preview of the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional. Brendan and PJ go through the field and discuss notables, including Andy's favorite, Lee Westwood! There are odds out there for this event, so picks are made for this major championship as well. In news, Detroit's TGL team will begin play in 2027 and some history was made at the USGA Fourball.

Andy and Trevor also talk about contenders Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, how Quail Hollow played as a major venue, and Rory McIlroy's disappointing week at a one of his favorite courses. They close the episode with a small preview of next month's U.S. Open at Oakmont.
After a roller coaster Championship Sunday at Quail Hollow, Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme react to Scottie Scheffler hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy for his third career major win, which leaves him halfway to a career Grand Slam. In this first installment of our deep dive into the storied history of Oakmont Country Club, we're joined by club historian Dave Moore to explore Oakmont's formative years - before the US Opens, before the national spotlight. We uncover the vision of founder HC Fownes, the bold architectural principles that shaped the course, and how Oakmont's fierce identity was forged long before it became a championship icon. This is the origin story of one of golf's most revered venues.
The LORD appears to Solomon a second time in answer to his prayer. The LORD promises that He will indeed dwell in the house that Solomon has built and warns Solomon from turning away to other gods, which will lead to destruction for Israel and the temple. Tragically, the rest of the chapter begins to reveal Solomon's slow slide toward such unfaithfulness as he wrongly attempts to dispose of Israelite land and cares more about wealth than worship. Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Kings 9:1-28. To learn more about Redeemer Lutheran, visit www.redeemer-oakmont.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the most legendary PGA Professionals the game has ever known—quite possibly ranked 1 and 1A on that list. First up is PGA Professional Hall of Famer Bob Ford. Bob's accolades span across four Hall of Fames, the prestigious William D. Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, and the Bobby Jones Award—one of the highest honors in the game. He's served as Head Professional at both Oakmont and Seminole, and his coaching tree reaches wider than any in history. If you've watched the U.S. Open over the past decade, you've likely heard his voice—he's been the official Starter since 2017 and will continue as long as he wants the job. Bob shares his insights on this year's Masters, what to expect from the U.S. Open's return to Oakmont, and, as a proud Yinzer, throws in some thoughts on the Steelers. Then, I'm honored to welcome another giant in the game—Suzy Whaley. A Hall of Famer in her own right, Suzy was the first female President of the PGA of America, is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor, and currently preparing to Captain the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. She was also recently on the bag for her niece, Phoebe Brinker, at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Suzy reflects on that experience, discusses the potential for a Women's Masters Tournament, and we explore a few exciting job opportunities where her leadership would be a perfect fit. Don't miss this conversation with two all-time greats.

Andy is back in the states and begins this episode by telling Brendan! about his time at Oakmont for U.S. Open media day. The two share their excitement for next month's tournament and dig into some setup talk about green speeds and the membership requesting the winning score be over par. From there, it's a big week on the PGA Tour as the inaugural Truist Championship takes place at Philadelphia Cricket Club, a Golden Age design. Andy and Brendan debate whether this course will be long enough to test the pros and lament that a week of wet weather in the northeast may lead to low scores on the 7,100-yard track. One-and-done picks are made for the big purse at stake with a limited field tuning up for the PGA Championship. Elsewhere, the alternate field event in Myrtle Beach has a stronger-than-usual field, headlined by Tom Kim. There's some Creator Classic chatter ahead of the new team-style event on Wednesday, with Andy wondering where Fat Perez's game is at these days. In news, ratings are out for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and LIV Korea, and the U.S. Ryder Cup contingent (minus one big name) allegedly met for dinner in Philly on Tuesday night.
Immediately following U.S. Open Media Day at Oakmont Country Club, Andy Johnson is joined by Garrett Morrison to discuss some initial takeaways from their first time at the course. The two discuss their favorite holes, the challenging greens, and the minimalistic design of Oakmont just hours after playing a full round. On the back half of this episode, Andy recaps his recent weeklong trip to Scotland with Fried Egg Golf Club members.
Live from Oakmont for U.S. Open media day, we discuss the newly announced Internet Invitational, the Blues devastating loss, Scottie dominating in Dallas, Elton John reaching out to Rory, baby update and much more. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. In this special bonus episode of Next on the Tee, I'm honored to be joined by Dr. Russell Levenson. Russ recently retired after 32 years in ministry, most notably serving 17 years as Rector of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston—the largest Anglican/Episcopal congregation in North America. He's a renowned theologian, author, and speaker who also developed a deep friendship with President George H.W. and First Lady Barbara Bush. Russ talks about his inspiring new book, “In God's Grip: What Golf Can Teach Us About the Bible,” with a foreword by the legendary Jim Nantz. We dive into the powerful spiritual and life lessons drawn from golf and how the swing philosophies of Ben Hogan intertwine with Biblical wisdom. From focusing on fundamentals to letting go of perfection, Russ explores how the mindset that helped Hogan master the game can also guide our spiritual journeys. We also reflect on his close relationship with the Bush family, what heaven meant to them, and how the second half of the book—The Downswing—challenges our assumptions about God as a harsh judge, encouraging instead a perspective of grace, abundance, and purpose. Plus, we talk Augusta, Oakmont, and Jim Nantz's unforgettable first Masters call in 1986. This conversation is full of insight, inspiration, and a few good swings of perspective. Whether you're seeking more meaning in your game or your life, this is one you won't want to miss.
Stanley Cup Champion Tyler Kennedy joined for the first hour. Kyle Brandt thinks Aaron Rodgers might tell everyone he's done. TK thinks the Steelers need to find a younger quarterback and we continue on Rodgers watch. TK, Joe, Bob, and one other will play in a golf outing very soon. Bob shot a 78 at Oakmont!
After David's defeat of Goliath, Jonathan joins himself to David in true friendship, despite any ramifications that may have for his potential to be king. When Saul realizes just how popular David is becoming, Saul eyes David with suspicion. Saul's bad conscience before the LORD leads him to attempt to kill David both directly and indirectly. In every instance, however, Saul fails. Even when he thinks he has David cornered by using David's faith and the Philistine army against David, Saul fails, and David marries into the royal family. At every turn, the LORD sustains the line of the Promised Seed, paving the way for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church and School in Oakmont, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Samuel 18:1-30. "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ.
This week on Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two fantastic guests who bring both incredible stories and valuable insights to the show. Leading things off is John Cook, a 21-time winner across the PGA and Champions Tours and a former National Champion from his days at Ohio State. This marks John's 10th visit to the show, and every conversation with him ha been fantastic thanks to his upbeat attitude and passion for the game — you can literally hear the smile in his voice. We kick things off by talking about this year's Mexico Open, a tournament that holds special meaning for John since his father, Jim Cook, helped resurrect it back in the 1980s, and John himself went on to win it in 1995. As we continue looking ahead to this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, John also shares his memories of competing in the 1994 U.S. Open there. We also reminisce about some of the fun team events he's played in alongside Sergio Garcia, Mark O'Meara, and Rex Caldwell. Following John, I'm excited to welcome Jeff Harper to the show for the first time. Jeff is the Director of Operations for Byler Holdings, which owns and manages five fantastic golf courses across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Each course presents its own unique challenge, making them the perfect progression for players as they advance their skills. Jeff takes us on a virtual tour of Broad Run Golfer's Club in West Chester, Iron Valley in Lebanon, Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Lebanon Valley in Myerstown, and Blue Mountain in Fredericksburg. With his passion for golf and knack for storytelling, Jeff brings these courses to life and highlights what makes each one special. It's a can't-miss episode for anyone looking to discover hidden gems and enjoy some great golf stories along the way.
This week we are joined by The Grounds Superintendent at Oakmont Country Club, host of the 125th U.S. Open Championship. In this very special episode of Next on the Tee, 2011 U.S. Senior Open Champion Olin Browne and 1987 US Amateur Champion Billy Mayfair join the show. Olin shares his thoughts on the PGA Tour's controversial changes—smaller field sizes, fewer Monday qualifiers, and the dominance of signature events. Is the tour catering too much to top players at the expense of the grinders? Olin shares his perspective on how these changes might impact the next generation of Tour players. We also discuss the financial side of the game, from $25 million purses to sponsors pulling out. With TV ratings down and fans feeling disconnected from today's stars, what can the PGA Tour do to bring back its audience? Olin weighs in on whether accessibility and engagement changes could make a difference. Shifting gears, we reminisce about Olin's experiences at Oakmont, site of the 2025 U.S. Open. He reflects on his rounds there in ‘94 and ‘07, the legendary greens, and even witnessing Arnold Palmer's farewell. Billy Mayfair was also witness to The King's final US Open round and talks about sticking around following his Friday round to see it. We discuss his trip to Morocco to open up his Champion's Tour season. Billy reflects on his legendary iron play, including a streak of six consecutive birdies on Par 3s last season—an impressive feat on today's long courses. Billy also gives his perspective on equipment advancements, comparing today's clubs and balls to those from earlier eras. He recalls playing alongside icons like Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, and Trevino, sharing his favorite memories from competing against legends. Billy also gets candid about his journey in professional golf, revealing how he turned pro without telling his parents and when he finally broke the news. Finally, we check in on his wife, Tami, who has been a huge influence on his career—both as a caddie and in her own golf endeavors—and ask Billy how much longer he envisions competing at a high level, given that Bernhard Langer is still winning at 67! It's a fascinating discussion with two of golf's true competitors—don't miss it!
In Part 2 of Season 12, Episode 3, we're diving into Pittsburgh sports and golf history with two fantastic guests! First up, our good friend and Pittsburgh Sports Talk Radio Host, Paul Alexander, is back on the show! It's always an honor and a blast catching up with Paul. He is a part of the KDKA team that just won the prestigious Marconi Award for being the best News Talk radio station in the country. Having Paul as part of the team, it's no shock that they won it. This time, we cover everything from the Steelers' offseason moves, Mike Tomlin's lack of leadership, and the state of Penn State football. Plus, with the U.S. Open returning to Oakmont this summer, I get Paul's take on what to expect from one of golf's toughest courses. I could talk to Paul all night, and you'll understand why but we kept it to a great 40-minute conversation packed with insights and laughs. Then, we round things out with David Moore, the Curator of Collections at Oakmont Country Club along with several other iconic Western Pennsylvania courses. David is also the co-author of the newly released book, Battling The Church Pews: The History of Golf's Premiere Events in Western Pennsylvania. We take a deep dive into his book, discussing some of Oakmont's legendary tournaments, including:
Isaiah brings this section with ten burdens upon the nations to a conclusion with a burden concerning Tyre. As an economic center of the ancient world, the judgment that is coming upon Tyre wreaks havoc upon all the nations. No amount of economic success can be a true refuge from the day of the LORD, for He will bring all the glory of man down. As the LORD said would happen, so He brought about the destruction of Tyre through Alexander the Great. As this section comes to an end, the LORD makes it clear that there is no hope in the nations. He alone is the place of refuge and salvation. Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church and School in Oakmont, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 23:1-18. "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 1-39. The prophet proclaims to the people of his day and throughout history that the Holy One of Israel alone is exalted. Those who put their trust in the strength of man will be brought low, but those who trust in the LORD will see that He is their Immanuel. Jesus is God with us who reigns over the kingdom of God forever and ever!

Tim Lloyd calls in to talk about the US open coming to Oakmont, PA.
We're stoked to have Charles on the podcast this week, and we waste no time jumping into some good stories. After a 7-minute opening from Pepe and Bash, the episode opens up with a memory rehash of a time at Oakmont CC. Charles lends his thoughts on playing at Oakmont and we relive a night there two years ago with George Birge. We jump over to some Augusta talk, and ironically, it's where Charles grew up. He gives us a glimpse into what growing up next to Augusta National was like, especially with the range balls. We switch it up a bit and get into the story of how Charles made it to Nashville. With the band in place, the story of Lady A takes shape, and the rest is history. He refers to this as ‘rare and random'. We chat about Lady A and the path the band has been on, ups and downs. He also hints at a potential ‘solo' album he's working on.We sprint ahead in this episode and get into some personal talks about his past and the roads he traveled. The episode continues on this path, and we hear about his life and health now and how decisions he's made have affected him in a positive way. We round out the episode with more golf talk. If you're a golf enthusiast, this golf talk will make too much sense. The episode ends with our standard tap-in segment presented by Bettinardi Golf where we ask Charles four questions that demand his quick response. Although Balaam was unable to get the LORD to curse Israel, the false prophet finds success in getting Israel to curse itself. By engaging in adulterous acts with the idolatrous daughters of Moab, the people Israel join themselves to the idolatrous worship of Baal of Peor. The LORD's wrath against His rebellious people is swift; He sends a plague against them. Yet Phineas, the son of Eleazar the priest, shares the LORD's zeal against this idolatry and puts a stop to it. For this intercession, the LORD halts the plague against Israel and gives a covenant of peace to Phineas and his descendants. Phineas' work for Israel foreshadows the zeal, intercession, and atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ. Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church and School in Oakmont, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 25:1-18. "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life.

Carlton Henry was well prepared when he earned his first head superintendent position three years ago at Dedham Country and Polo Club just outside Boston. A native of New York, Henry first prepped at golf courses in his home state, home to the nation's strictest pesticide regulations. A graduate of the Rutgers turf program, he eventually spent several years working for another Rutgers product, John Zimmers, at both Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh and later the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. As an AIT at Oakmont, Henry was part of a team that oversaw the 2016 U.S. Open and completed many changes and upgrades to the historic Henry Fownes design that is a regular USGA stop. While at Inverness, the historic Donald Ross design underwent significant changes, including an Andrew Green-led restoration and a major tree-management project. During the Covid plagued 2020 golf season, the team at Inverness held an LPGA Tour event with barely a month's notice. Listen as Carlton discusses how his well-rounded past helped prepare him for his role at Dedham as he ushers the course into the future.
If you've been listening to my show for awhile then you've likely heard me speak about my experience of being bullied as a teen and young adult. It's a matter which is near and dear to my heart and one that I try to bring awareness to any chance I get. Which is why I was so excited when my dear friend and previous guest on the show, Amy Adams, shared that her cousin literally wrote and created a play which addresses bullying head on. Mary Ann Mangini is a performer, writer, teacher, musician, and all around hugely talented Woman. She wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It which is the focus for our episode together. On this guest episode, Mary Ann joins me in a collaborative exploration of the nature of bullying; what it's like to experience bulling, how to understand bullying, and ways to overcome bullying. Mary Ann shares about the path that led her to creating this incredible gift of a musical which addresses the growing bullying epidemic, provides solutions for working to eradicate bullying, takes a serious topic and infuses some humor to lighten the mood, and is performed by the very youth and teens who often endure this abuse. Working with young actors on this show allows for a lot of open discussion regarding the topic. Mary Ann explains how everyone can identify with bullying because It's everywhere, and not just among our young population. She wrote the show because she was bullied as an adult at her first job. After earning her Bachelor's degree in music education at Grove City College, Mary Ann pursued her passion for teaching choir, music, drama, and private vocal lessons at Shenango High School in New Castle. She also taught high school choir and elementary music in the Riverview School District in Oakmont. In April 2013, Mary Ann released her debut jazz album, Release Me, comprised of popular jazz standards and several original works. She currently tours the Pittsburgh area as lead vocalist for the high-energy disco band, Dancing Queen. She has performed at venues all over the Pittsburgh region, including Jergel's Rhythm Grille, multiple Atria's locations, the Rivers Casino, the Meadows Casino, the Rivers Club, Eddie V's, Cioppino, Fresco's, the Oaks Theater, the Parlay Lounge, the New Hazlett Theater, and Kennywood. Dancing Queen has won Pittsbugh City Paper's Best Cover Band in Best of PGH for the past three years in a row! Mary Ann teaches voice/piano lessons at her home studio in Cranberry Township, and also serves as the creator/director of the Fantastix youth show choir. In 2017, Mary Ann wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It. The Fantastix has performed this original musical in local Pittsburgh schools in order to raise awareness for the persisting bullying epidemic, as well as to provide solutions to combat this issue.

Plus, we're checking in on the Trump rally investigation and decoding Kamala Harris' choice to introduce her vice presidential pick in Philly next week. We always cite our sources: Pittsburgh's “jock tax” is headed to the state Supreme Court. Kamala Harris will hold a rally with her running mate in Philadelphia next Tuesday Former President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Harrisburg on Wednesday — his first time back in Pennsylvania after the assassination attempt in Butler County. Earlier in the day, he spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists' annual convention. Trump says he plans to return to Butler County but has not released more details. As the investigation into the assassination attempt continues, the Butler County district attorney has been defending local law enforcement officers after the state police commissioner told Congress that they left their post at the rally. The prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia does not include Oakmont teacher Marc Fogel. Fogel's mother met with Trump the day of the Butler County rally and had been hoping he would draw attention to Fogel's case during his speech. On October 17, 520 BC, the Word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the governor, Joshua the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people in Judah. The LORD calls them to remember the previous temple in its glory and contrast it to the temple that they are currently rebuilding. Although the rebuilt temple seems like nothing to them, the LORD gives strength to His people through His promise that His Spirit will remain in their midst. A time is coming when He will shake creation and the nations to fill His house with glory. That glory doesn't come from silver and gold, but from His presence which brings peace. In our Lord Jesus Christ, these promises have been fulfilled. Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church and School in Oakmont, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Haggai 2:1-9. "The Post-Exilic Prophets” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Through the preaching of these faithful men, the LORD sent His Word to His people who returned home after their exile in Babylon. Not only did the LORD encourage His people in the work of rebuilding the temple, but even more than that, He pointed them forward to the fulfillment of all the Old Testament promises in the coming kingdom of our true King and great High Priest, Jesus Christ.
