-- DIALOGUE LAB PODCAST EPISODE 015 - Sameena Mustafa Helped Build the Blue Wave I talked to Sameena Mustafa -- former candidate for Congress -- a few weeks before the midterm elections. Sameena is a progressive who aimed to unseat centrist Democrat Mike Quigley in the Democratic primary back in March 2018. Her bid was impressive, if ultimately unsuccessful, and shone a light on how out of step Quigley’s voting record has been with his very progressive district. And in the context of the “Blue Wave” of Democratic victories coming to light since last Tuesday, the big message I take from my conversation with Sameena is this: There’s lots more where that came from. The victories we are seeing now are the tip of the iceberg, And they are the result of work being done by progressives -- many women of color -- all over the country. And Sameena was one of those women, getting out in front, and insisting on a new direction. Listen to our conversation here: https://www.dialoguelab.org/podcast-episodes/ep015-sameena-mustafa

Born in Illinois to Indian Muslim immigrant parents, Sameena Mustafa has dedicated her life to advocating for women and people of color. After graduating from college, she became a Planned Parenthood clinic manager. Since then, she has taken numerous leadership positions in local organizations including the Chicago Women's Health Center and League of Women Voters Chicago. She also founded the Symposium to Elect Women & People of Color and Hand Her the Mic, an organization dedicated to empowering women of color through comedy workshops, forums, and performance opportunities. And now, she's ready to serve the people of Illinois' 5th in the House of Representatives. She's challenging incumbent Mike Quigley, a foreign policy hawk, for the Democratic nomination. The district has an ugly history, having previously been represented by Bill Lipinski, father of conservative Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski, Rod Blagojevich, who went on to serve as Governor of Illinois before being impeached and sentenced to 14 years in prison, and Rahm Emanuel, the current Chicago Mayor who shielded the Chicago police department from investigation after the shooting of Laquan McDonald. If elected, Sameena would offer the 5th a new start. Not only would she be their first representative to reject corporate money; she would be the first woman and person of color to represent the district in the House. Sameena joined us on the podcast to discuss Mike Quigley's hawkishness, her work empowering women and people of color, why we need to abolish ICE, and more.

The Skewer roars into the new year with a dope batch of excellent satire, as is our way. Led off by a BRAND NEW SEGMENT: Voicemail Op-Eds, as performed by new Skewer co-producer erica dreisbach. Joe Anderson rightfully exposes the dangerously bland Andy Borowitz for the black hole of comedy he is. Arish Singh takes the left wing media to task for wasting time futzing about with white status wars when there are Nazis to fight, Megan Kirby explores the tenuous place of ephemeral pop-culture comfort food in an increasingly uncomfortable world, and Sameena Mustafa gives us a glimpse into the beating white heart of Pantsuit Nation. Oz Elgun and Nic Wehrwein faced off in the Skewer debate to decide what's the best way to make Americans care about Aleppo: say dogs are being killed instead of humans, or rename Aleppo "White People Town"? OH MAN, guys, this show is incredible. Off the chain--where even is the chain? There is no chain. Enjoy!
