Join host Matthew Morris and guest Tom Harrison as they discuss the "Amazon of North Carolina," the beautiful Roanoke River watershed and the National Black Bear Festival in Plymouth, NC. The wildly successful Black Bear Festival was founded at the epicenter center of the black bear universe in Plymouth, NC. Nearby Plymouth is the home to the world's largest black bears, the highest black bear densities on the planet, as well as the best public bear viewing in NC. These coastal giant black bears flourish here due to the abundance of high protein crops, mild winters, wonderful habitat, and perhaps even genetics. The award-winning Black Bear Festival was created to celebrate these magnificent animals and educate the public about them in fun and interactive ways. The event takes place each year on the first Saturday in June on Plymouth's historic waterfront on the banks of NC's Amazon – the Roanoke River. Therapeutic Community Elders & the PETT Archive (Planned Environment Therapy Trust) Episode summary: In this conversation, David Jones and Naomi Murphy are joined by Tom Harrison, Sarah Paget, Vicky Gavin, and David Kennard.. Together they explore what the Therapeutic Community (TC) Elders are, why their monthly open forums matter, and what it means for the field that the PETT archive at Toddington is closing. The group reflects on sustaining therapeutic community ideas, making knowledge accessible through a “living archive” (including Vicky's A–Z artwork concept), and how people can get involved. Guests Tom Harrison – Psychiatrist (worked in a therapeutic community in the 1970s); historian of therapeutic communities. Sarah Paget – Director at the Mulberry Bush; supports and coordinates the TC Elders and related activity. Vicky (Victoria) – Formerly worked at The Retreat (Acorn programme) and managed the therapeutic community at HMP Send; also an artist developing an A–Z “living archive” concept. David Kennard – Clinical psychologist; long-standing contributor to the therapeutic community field (including writing/editing roles) and TC Elders participant. In this episode Where the idea of the TC Elders came from and what the group is for. Why the monthly Zoom Open Forums have become a key way of staying connected across countries and services. How the Elders aim to hold a space for thinking, including “negative capability” (the capacity to sit with not knowing). Who the Open Forums are for (not only people in formal therapeutic communities), and what people get from attending. The story and purpose of the PETT archive—and what is being lost (and potentially preserved) as it closes. A “living archive” approach: Vicky's A–Z artwork as a way to invite memories, reflections, and contributions from the wider community. Chapters / timestamps (Times approx.) 01:03 – Welcome and what the conversation will cover (TC Elders and the PETT archive). 01:29 – Introductions: Tom Harrison, Sarah Paget, Vicky (Victoria), David Kennard, Dr Naomi Murphy. 03:51 – What are the Therapeutic Community Elders and why were they formed? 05:51 – The monthly Open Forums: connection, learning, and support across settings and countries. 10:03 – How to access the Open Forums; typical attendance and the “no fee” ethos. 15:26 – Who can be an Elder? How invitations work and why in-person meetings matter. 21:51 – Vicky's A–Z “living archive” artwork idea and how it could become open and collaborative. 28:38 – What is the PETT archive and what has it contained? 32:39 – Why the archive is closing (May 31) and the practical realities of maintaining it. 33:59 – Preserving therapeutic community ideas in a climate that often undervalues long-term, relational work. 40:04 – Closing reflections: why therapeutic community ideas are “common sense” and broader than TCs. Key takeaways The TC Elders are less about “giving answers” and more about holding a reflective space for practitioners and communities. The Open Forums function as a predictable monthly “anchor” that supports people doing relational work in challenging contexts. The PETT archive represents a major collective memory of therapeutic community practice; its closure highlights the real costs of preserving history. “Living archive” approaches (like the A–Z concept) may help capture stories, artefacts, and learning that don't always make it into formal publications. We are obsessed with the weather. This obsession has served us very well over thousands of years - ultimately for the purposes of survival - food - crops, grazing, water, safety etc. The weather shapes our days, our moods, our plans - often without us noticing. At sea and on the water, it's a different story. Weather is our focal point. Every decision, whether cruising or racing, flows from the wind, cloud patterns, pressure, the waves and swell - however localised. The weather is something you read, you feel, you live in and optimise for. The weather can be predictability and uncertainty, and in many ways, us sailors and seafarers have front row seats to the magnitude and at times, the extremes, of the weathers that governs our planet. In this episode we're speaking with sailor and meteorologist Tom Harrison, to explore what the weather can teach us if we know what to look for and how to read it.

In 2020, amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, Tom Harrison's business coach gave him a stern warning: "Do NOT sign that paperwork." Taking sole ownership of a real estate agency during lockdowns seemed like madness. Tom signed anyway. In this episode, we sit down with Tom Harrison to discuss how he ignored expert advice to navigate chaos, scaled his team from 13 to 50 people, and ultimately led Harrison Agents to win "Large Residential Agency of the Year" at the REIT Awards. Tom shares his "fork in the road" philosophy, why he turned down major franchises to protect his creative independence, and how he is blending 180 years of family legacy with an "AI-first" approach to the future. "I'd rather make half the money and have my own destiny and have my own brand, than go with the brand and it's just about the money." — Tom Harrison. What you'll learn in this episode The Decision: In that moment, Tom ignored his business coach to buy the business during lockdown. The Growth: The exact mindset shift required to go from a "nice business" to a market share-winning agency. The Future: How Harrison Agents is adopting an "AI-first" approach to stay ahead of the competition. The Brand: Why staying independent was the only way to satisfy Tom's creative vision. Send Mo a text about this episode!I believe the Universe brings different people into my life at very specific times- and Juliana Fajardo came into my world at such a time. I met her in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. We were gathering in an online space called "Stronger Together" and I was immediately drawn to her energy and her curiosity. We met in person in July of 2020- at the same time I first met my now partner, Tom Harrison. We have stayed in touch ever since and cultivated a lovely friendship.

That's a huge waste of time. And a terrible user experience. Tom says, “It would lead to better accuracy, faster triage, and a better user experience if you can just take me directly to the answer or at the very least a subsection that has the answer I'm looking for.”What does this mean for you as a UX designer designing security products? Quench Soil Moisture Sensor: https://quenchplant.com/   ==========   The Championship Turf: A Tale of Precision and Care   In the bustling town of Riverview, where sports were the heartbeat of the community, there lay a sprawling athletic sports complex known as Champions Field. This complex wasn't just any sports venue; it boasted some of the most meticulously maintained turfgrass that athletes had ever competed on. The secret to their pristine fields lay in the hands of two sophisticated tools: Wesley, the WeatherStation, and Sam, the Soil Moisture Sensor.   Wesley was perched atop a tall post, overlooking the fields with a vigilant eye. His primary task was to monitor the environmental conditions—specifically evapotranspiration rates that influence how much water the turf lost to the atmosphere. With a plethora of sensors and a sophisticated algorithm, Wesley could predict water needs for days ahead, ensuring that the groundskeepers were always one step ahead of the weather.   Nestled beneath the surface of the lush green turf was Sam, who kept a low profile but played an equally crucial role. Sam's world was the root zone of the turfgrass, where he continuously monitored the moisture levels. His precise readings were vital, especially right before big games, to ensure that the turf was neither too dry—risking injury to players and damage to the grass—nor too wet, which could lead to slips and poor playing conditions.   The harmony between Wesley and Sam was critical, especially during the sports season. Wesley's data helped plan the watering schedules, but it was Sam's real-time readings that often dictated immediate actions. For instance, on a day leading up to an important football match, Wesley might suggest a lighter irrigation based on a cool, cloudy forecast. However, if Sam detected that the soil moisture was lower than ideal, the irrigation system could be adjusted to deliver just the right amount of water, ensuring the turf was in optimal condition when game day arrived.   The groundskeepers at Champions Field relied heavily on the data from both tools. They had a central command center where Wesley's forecasts and Sam's readings were displayed on big screens, allowing for quick decisions. This setup not only conserved water but also ensured that the turfgrass was always game-ready, providing a safe and competitive environment for athletes.   Throughout the seasons, Champions Field hosted numerous events, from soccer tournaments to track meets. Athletes often remarked on the exceptional quality of the turf, noting how it enhanced their performance and reduced injury risks. This reputation made Riverview a preferred venue for major sporting events, drawing teams and fans from across the region.   One memorable event was the national college soccer championship, held on a particularly hot and dry weekend. Thanks to Wesley's accurate weather predictions and Sam's diligent moisture tracking, the groundskeepers were able to implement a tailored watering program that maintained the turf's resilience and vibrancy throughout the event. The championship went off without a hitch, with players and coaches praising the excellent condition of the field.   Through the story of Champions Field, we see how tools, when used in their ideal applications, can achieve results that not only meet but exceed expectations. Just as in any field, be it agriculture or athletics, the right technological tools—like Wesley and Sam—can make all the difference, turning a regular turf into a championship-grade playing field.   Chapter Two: The Power of 'And' at Champions Field As the seasons changed and Champions Field continued to flourish, the complex became a beacon of innovation and teamwork, not just in sports but also in the way it was maintained. The success of the field was often attributed to the harmonious use of both Wesley, the WeatherStation, and Sam, the Soil Moisture Sensor. This collaboration illustrated the powerful concept of "And," where the integration of multiple tools led to outcomes far superior than any single tool could achieve alone.   The "And" philosophy at Champions Field became particularly evident during an exceptionally challenging season. The weather was erratic—unpredictable bursts of rain followed by prolonged dry spells. The old approach of relying solely on predictable patterns was insufficient under these conditions. It was during this time that the groundskeeping team, led by veteran manager Tom Harrison, decided to fully embrace the "And" philosophy—not choosing between Wesley or Sam, but aligning their strengths to tackle the challenges ahead.   Tom organized a series of strategic meetings where data from both Wesley and Sam were analyzed in tandem. Wesley provided the broader climatic trends, which included not just predictions of rain or sunshine but also detailed reports on humidity, wind, and solar radiation—all of which affected the turf's evapotranspiration rates. Meanwhile, Sam offered a granular view of the soil's current state, providing data that was critical for making immediate adjustments.   This dual approach allowed the team to create a dynamic irrigation schedule that adapted to both the predicted conditions and the real-time needs of the turf. When Wesley indicated a week of high sun exposure and low rainfall, the team planned increased irrigation to compensate. However, if Sam reported adequate moisture levels in the soil before these adjustments were made, the watering could be scaled back, conserving water while still maintaining perfect playing conditions.   The power of "And" was not just about using both tools but understanding how their inputs complemented each other to create a holistic management strategy. This strategy was put to the test during the high-stakes regional athletics championship. Just days before the event, an unexpected heatwave hit Riverview, putting potential stress on the turf and the athletes.   Thanks to the combined insights from Wesley and Sam, the groundskeeping team implemented a preemptive cooling protocol for the turf. They adjusted the irrigation times to early mornings and late evenings, reducing evaporation and maximizing water absorption. Wesley's forecasts ensured that the water was applied just before the coolest parts of the day, while Sam's moisture tracking confirmed that the soil retained optimal moisture levels throughout the event.   The championship was a resounding success, with record-breaking performances and minimal disruptions. Coaches and athletes praised the condition of the turf, noting how it remained resilient and supportive despite the heatwave. The success underlined a crucial lesson for the team at Champions Field: the best results come from not having to choose between one valuable resource or another but from leveraging every available tool in concert.   The story of Champions Field is a testament to the idea that embracing the concept of "And" can lead to exceptional outcomes in any field. By moving beyond binary choices and fostering an environment where multiple solutions coexist and complement each other, any team can achieve more than what seems possible—creating a winning strategy on and off the field.   Epilogue: Embracing 'And' in Life and Business As the tale of Champions Field illustrates, the synergy between Wesley the WeatherStation and Sam the Soil Moisture Sensor was not just a story about maintaining turf. It is a powerful metaphor for decision-making in business and in daily life. Often, we find ourselves facing choices that seem to demand one solution over another. However, the concept of "And" encourages us to hold two seemingly conflicting thoughts or strategies simultaneously, exploring the strengths and potential of each.   In the professional sphere, this might mean balancing cost efficiency with quality, or innovation with reliability. In personal decisions, it might look like weighing immediate pleasures against long-term benefits. The challenge lies in not defaulting to an easier either/or mindset but embracing the complexity and richness of "And."   The dual approach at Champions Field taught the team to adapt and thrive in changing conditions by integrating diverse data and strategies. Similarly, in business and life, combining different viewpoints and solutions can lead to more robust and flexible strategies. This doesn't mean compromising between two points but rather synthesizing them in a way that leverages the best of both worlds.   For instance, consider the entrepreneur who must choose between investing in growth or solidifying the current operations. By applying the "And" philosophy, they might find a strategy that allows for gradual expansion while strengthening existing processes, thus securing stability as they grow.   In our daily lives, embracing "And" might mean learning to balance work and personal life, not by sacrificing one for the other, but by finding ways to enrich both. It could mean engaging in healthy debate with friends or colleagues—valuing their different perspectives as much as your own, leading to deeper understanding and more innovative solutions.   This approach is not without its challenges. Holding two opposing ideas in mind and giving them equal consideration is an exercise in mental flexibility and openness. It requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to venture into the complex space where innovative solutions live. Yet, the rewards can be significant, leading to outcomes that might never be reached through more conventional either/or thinking.   As you navigate the complexities of your professional and personal life, consider the lessons from Champions Field. Embrace the power of "And," allowing yourself to see beyond binary choices. Explore the potential that lies in the harmony of combining different tools, thoughts, or viewpoints. This might be challenging, but it is precisely in these challenges that the greatest opportunities for success and fulfillment are found.

Play naturally teaches us to live communally with one another and calms our nervous systems. It's also really, really fun!Planet Mynd will allow me to use my 52 years of life experience— comic book reader, sci-fi & fantasy reader, D&D player (always warrior/thief), Division 1 swimmer, Ivy League economics graduate, litigation attorney, father, marketer, trauma survivor, academic coach, corporate facilitator, public speaker, swimming coach, corporate trainer, event organizer, community organizer, fiction writer, and now foam dart blaster modder— and pour it into play events and game experiences that will light up the best parts of ourselves. The first events will launch at the Snohomish Sports Dome in downtown Snohomish starting in March.Subscribe to my email newsletter to stay up to date and hear about the blaster league, workshops and upcoming events you can partake in! Subscribe here: www.mymytoystore.com (scroll to the bottom of the home page!)FOLLOW TOM

Tom Harrison is a new author who is about to release his first novel, From Punishment to Peace. Born and raised amidst the vibrant rhythms of Memphis, Tom's deep-rooted connection to the South shapes his unique storytelling style. Tom claims his soul is majestically linked to that of his hometown: its music, its people, its challenges, and its triumphs. As evidenced by its deep-rooted character and historical significance. In his debut work, based strongly on his own experiences, we are introduced to Tommy, a man who can't move on from his years in Memphis. Emotionally abused as a child, the successful businessman buries his need for healing beneath a jet-setting lifestyle. It is only after revealing conversations with his homeless, street-smart, and drug-dependent uncle that he is finally able to break his thirty-year spiral in search of peace. As they journey deep into the broken shards of their shared past, will the abuse they each suffered, the addictions they both carried, and the help they desperately desired finally be revealed?http://FromPunishmentToPeace.com The Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors.
