Persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) is one of the most distressing sexual dysfunctions. PGAD involves having near-constant feelings of unwanted arousal that make it difficult to concentrate, work, and sleep. In today's show, we're going to dive into what we know about PGAD and speak with a physician who frequently treats patients with this condition. I am joined once again by Dr. Sameena Rahman, a board-certified OB/GYN, sex-med gynecologist, and menopause specialist with an academic affiliation at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. She is the founder of the Center for Gynecology and Cosmetics, and host of the podcast Gyno Girl Presents: Sex, Drugs & Hormones. Some of the specific topics we explore include: What is persistent gentian arousal disorder? How is it clinically defined? What is it like to live with PGAD? How many people have PGAD, and who’s most likely to be affected? What’s the connection between obsessive-compulsive disorder and PGAD? What are the most effective treatments for this disorder? All she expected was that the person who she was in a two year relationship with would leave his other relationship and only focus on her. But she didn't get the only thing she was asking for, unfortunately she got the complete opposite. Welcome to episode five of Christmas and Crime.

The impact of religion and culture on sexual function…and dysfunction is fascinating and complex. In this episode I am joined by Dr. Seemena Rahman, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ob-Gyn at Northwestern University and one of the few experts in the study of the impact of religion on sexual function. Dr. Rahman published a pivotal scientific paper in Sexual Medicine Reviews about female sexual dysfunction among Muslin women Dr. Streicher and Dr. Rahman discuss: The impact of colonialism on sexual expression in the Muslim world In general, the impact of religion on sexuality If religious women tend to have more sex, or less sex The impact of maintaining virginity prior to marriage on sexual satisfaction later in life Religions that emphasize that female pleasure is as important as male pleasure If the timing of intercourse is dictated in religions other than Judaism Buddhism and sexual practices The attitude of various religions on oral sex, anal sex, and masturbation? Religious attitudes towards post menopause sex when reproduction is no longer possible If pleasure or reproduction is emphasized in most religions Sexual dysfunction and sexual abuse in Muslim women If observant women get better care from a doctor who is the same religion For more information on Dr. Rahman Dr. Rahman's Website: cgcchicago.com Instagram: @gynogirl Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/drsamchicago/ Lauren Streicher, MD is a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, and the medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause. We have a number of repeat guests on the show this week, but all with new stories to tell since their last appearance. Nikki Shaver and Jeroen Plink have joined forces to launch Legaltech Hub. Their mission is to provide a single place for those of us looking at legal technology so that we can have a clear picture of who are the players in legaltech solutions. We talk about how the two began their collaboration efforts to expand upon Nikki Shaver's original idea for Legaltech Hub and launch it as a startup business. For those of us in the legal industry, whether it is a practicing lawyer, knowledge management, IT, library professional or other allied professionals, we all understand that when it comes to evaluating technology in the legal industry, it can be overwhelming. Jeroen and Nikki discuss how they set up the structure of Legaltech Hub, and who are the intended, and even the aspirational users of this system. We also discuss the competitors in the industry and how they believe Legaltech Hub distinguishes itself from the pack. A quick shoutout to our friend Chevazz Brown for the resent launch of his DiversePro mobile app. Crystal Ball Question This week's LegalTech Crystal Ball question is answered by another TGIR Alumni, Sameena Kluck. Sameena sees an improvement in personal branding and authenticity in the legal profession. Scholars Heather Hlavka (Marquette University) and Sameena Mulla (Emory University) have written a new book that examines and interrogates the place and space of the courtroom, the use of expertise, especially scientific expertise, in the adjudicative process, and how this all intersects with race and gender in cases of sexual assault. Bodies in Evidence: Race, Gender, and Science in Sexual Assault Adjudication (NYU Press, 2021) is the result of a long-term ethnographic study of sexual assault cases in the city of Milwaukee, and how those cases, as they come through the legal system, re-animate cultural narratives and re-inscribe the authority associated with law courts and the legal system itself. A key focus of the research was in examining the ways in which medicolegal and forensic evidence was used in the trial process, and how the reliance on these scientific resources and those who narrate and explain these dimensions of evidence and information are often set in contrast with the experiences of the victim-witnesses in sexual assault cases. Hlavka and Mulla, and their team of students and research assistants, spent more than five years in the Milwaukee County Courthouse, sitting in at all aspects of the trial process, from jury selection to the trial itself, and more. During this time, all of the researchers observed the dynamics around how victims and victim-witnesses were assessed based on their class, race, virtue, gender, and how their very bodies were re-visited during the course of the evidence presentment. This analysis was seen in contrast to the approach to “expert” testimony in the form of medical professionals, forensic professionals, police, and legal professionals. Key points that come through the research, and thus through the book, note how the racialize and gendered narratives are clear within the interactions in the courtroom, but these dynamics do not generally come through in trial transcripts, opinions, or the judicial record of a case. Thus, the deeply lopsided racial dynamics of the courtroom are not clear in the written record but are starkly clear within the walls of the courtroom. Bodies in Evidence: Race, Gender, and Science in Sexual Assault Adjudication is a multi-layered, multi-method examination of how the judicial system, in context of sexual assault adjudication, does not, in fact, achieve what might be a just outcome in many situations. The adversarial legal system in the United States does not generally assist the communities that are often broken by this very process. Hlavka and Mulla also suggest that the investment in and use of forensic and scientific evidence has not, in fact, shifted the outcomes in these kinds of cases. Bodies in Evidence will be of interest to a great many readers, from a host of different perspectives and disciplines. Lilly J. Goren is professor of political science at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. She is co-editor of the award winning book, Women and the White House: Gender, Popular Culture, and Presidential Politics (University Press of Kentucky, 2012), as well as co-editor of Mad Men and Politics: Nostalgia and the Remaking of Modern America (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015). An often overlooked component of preventive medicine is that of women's health. If you google common questions females might have about their bodies you'll get a multitude of answers, some evidence-based, and some not so much. On this episode, we had Dr. Sameena Rahman, also known as Gynogirl on social media, to talk about how preventive medicine relates to the various topics around women's health. We talk prevention around menarche, the reproductive years, menopause, and beyond. We discuss how prevention can take the form of anything from simple education regarding normal processes, to screening for cervical cancer, and how other lifestyle factors influence reproductive health. This episode is the first we've had on women's health and likely not the last. Let us know what you think! Dr. Rehman's Social Media: Instagram Twitter Link Show Outline Tell us a little bit about what you do, and why you decided to become an obstetrician/gynecologist? What made you go into private practice focusing on gyn? What does preventive medicine as a whole mean to you? Outside of pap-smears, what are other ways preventive medicine relates to female sexual health? When it comes to female sexual health, what are things that females need to watch out for and how can they be active participants in their own sexual health? How does nutrition/exercise/stress relief/etc impact female sexual health? Are they independent or linked? (I.e. CVD and lifestyle factors) Menopause presents a list of changes and challenges for women, outside of the “normal symptoms” what do women need to keep an eye out for? Many symptoms of menopause are disregarded by physicians and patients are given non-useful suggestions such as yoga resulting in reliance on pseudoscientific supplements. What actually works for menopause symptoms? Do you think that our system of medicine currently does a good job of addressing the reproductive health of females and preventing downstream issues? What can we improve? If someone asks you how to get healthy in 2 minutes, what would you tell them? Join our Mailing List HERE: Mailchimp

All Sameena Imam wanted for Christmas was to spend the holiday with her boyfriend, Roger Cooper. But Roger was leading a double life, with a long-time partner at home, and he wasn't planning on giving her up. He told Sameena they were going to be together and that he was leaving his partner. But in reality, he and his brother David were plotting to kill Sameena and communicating using Star Wars references. Sameena Imam was gingerly headed into the Christmas holiday with the promise of love. Her boyfriend, Roger Cooper was dating 3 women but told Sameena he would be only hers after she presented him with an ultimatum. When they were on their way to David Cooper's home (Roger's brother) for a quick stop on their road trip to celebrate the holiday as a couple, she was killed by the brothers. When the two were plotting Sameena's murder they communicated in Star Wars quotes to try to mask their meaning, but their mission was clear. All sources can be found on www.crimeoncaffeine.com.
