On our radar this week… Jeff takes a week off and just like that, Trump starts another war! This time with him smack-ass in the middle of it. Jeff and his bride were in Canada's Maritimes and was attacked with Canadian kindness, poutine, real beef and not diseased Argentinian horse meat, the best lobsters and oysters in the hemisphere, and the inability of artisans and merchants to ship their goods to their traditional U.S. partners – or even for me to ship purchases home, due to the economically illiterate tariffs and self-destructive imbecilic trade war with our closest cousins. Back here in the U.S.A.: Trump's war could really cost him, eh? Senate and gubernatorial races in Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine and Ohio are already being impacted by the economic turmoil spinning off Trump's latest stupidity. Too bad for John James and Mike Rogers, Porky POTUS spent much of the week focused on his issue Number One: naming things after him, including: Another effort to put his name on the Kennedy Center despite a court order, threatening to tear down the Center if he doesn't get his way; Stripping the name of a World War II hero off a new aircraft carrier, reportedly instead renaming it for him, while ordering the Navy to spend billions on redesigns of carriers so they looked like World War II carriers and revert to outdated steam-powered launch systems; Inscribing a plaque on his under-construction helipad with his signature, clearly delighted that the new granite slab outside the White House will be a great place for cocktail parties. Reportedly deciding to use his $400-million political bankroll to run an advertising blitz on the Greatness of Trump … instead of directly supporting Republican candidates. But Michigan Republicans aren't joining the Trump Name Game. At their weekend state nominating convention, none of their candidates for state office mentioned Trump even once. Their focus was putting lipstick on the pig that is the GOP record on the economy. I wish them all smashing luck as they contort themselves into cartoonish pretzels in their futile efforts to avoid being fatally tethered to Donald Trump's venereal disease-level job approval. State Republicans are also reeling from what appears to be a growing Blue Wave. The non-partisan Cook Political Report has moved two Michigan congressional races away from the GOP: in the Macomb County based 10th district, from Leans Republican to Tossup … and in the Saginaw Bay region 8th from “Lean Democratic” to “Likely Democratic.” State Democrats are sharpening their verbal axes as we approach the traditional Labor Day launch of the campaign. The Canada Trade War drew immediate fire from Lt. Governor nominee Winnie Brinks, and 10th district congressional candidate Christina Hines. Senator Elissa Slotkin, in a speech to UAW leadership, said a longer term threat posed by the Trade War is Canada's growing partnership with China on sales of EV's … and Trump then allowing those cars across the Gordie Howe Bridge. Abdul El-Sayed is highlighting the obvious challenge facing Mike Rogers in the Senate campaign: does he risk angering Donald Trump breaking with him on issues beginning with the Trump-created Iran war, and the emerging hot-button issue of Data Centers. But the possibly most ominous development of the week came from the very Trumpy Supreme Court, which has started to open the door to a federal takeover of elections. Without ruling on the merits of Trump's Post Office deciding who gets to vote, Chief Justice John Roberts gave Trump permission to begin implementing his executive order. It was all part of a bizarre week that can probably be summed up in two words: Lake America, Trump's latest Sharpie-labeled change to world maps. With 84 days to the midterms and a six-state primary night ahead, Chuck Todd and Chris Cillizza open on Chuck's least-hedged read of the cycle: Democrats haven't had a good summer, but Republicans have had a worse one, and every macro trend points to something in the neighborhood of 30 House seats and six or seven Senate seats. On Monday I sat down with Friend of the Blog Erin Petrey to discuss her recent campaign for the Democratic nomination in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional district. That race was won by Zach Dembo (website here; this is one where we really do have a chance in a Blue Wave) but Erin nevertheless considered it to be a successful effort. In the pod we discuss her learning curve as a candidate, her approach to the various social media channels and what she was able to derive from each (surprisingly, Threads good and both Bluesky and X bad), her relationships with local, state, and national Democratic organizations, how she handled interactions with opposing candidates on both sides of the aisle, the struggles associated with having conversations with often extremely enthusiastic BlueAnon types, the challenges of running as a progressive in a marginal district, and the problem of vetting. Our Club Spotlight series is returning for a special World Cup edition! At this season's tournament, we have four nations competing at their first World Cup: Curaçao, Cabo Verde, Uzbekistan, and Jordan. As the competition progresses, we will be highlighting each footballing nation – exploring their political, geographical, and sporting histories and learning how they got here. First up is Curaçao, the smallest nation by population to ever qualify for a World Cup! Only autonomous since 2010, the island has seen many centuries of colonial transition and tumult. We discuss its complex history with Europeans – namely The Netherlands, the slave trade, the oil industry, and its long road to independence. We then break down some its rich sporting culture. There are no major surprises coming from the two days of fun, fudge and high-level schmoozing and boozing … and also no gubernatorial debate even though the major contenders are all at the Grand Hotel. It became a wake for the reality of Duggan's “impossible dream” which proved, in fact, to be impossible. Does it clear the way for Jocelyn Benson to ride a Blue Wave into the Governor's office? National Democrats have launched a circular firing squad over the 2024 Autopsy report with DNC chair Ken Martin facing calls for his ouster. But does anyone outside of the party's org chart and the political media give a damn? Meanwhile, Michigan Democrats are making a pitch to the DNC to put Michigan into the first tier of presidential primaries.  President Donald Trump's push to reshape congressional districts ahead of the November elections suffered a double setback Tuesday, as South Carolina senators declined to do so and a federal court blocked a Republican-backed map in Alabama. As early in-person voting began Tuesday in South Carolina's primaries, the state Senate rejected a Republican plan to cancel those congressional votes and instead schedule a new primary under revised districts designed to help the GOP oust Jim Clyburn, the state's only black member of Congress. A Republican win in Texas could well mean a Democratic win in November. Utterly corrupt Attorney General Ken Paxton outlasted Senator John Cornyn despite multiple national Republicans correctly pointing out that Paxton was a grotesquely flawed candidate. He's under federal indictment, he narrowly avoided CONVICTION AFTER impeachment – BY A GOP LEGISLATURE, and he's being sued for divorce by his state senator wife thanks to his affair with a former aide and state securities regulator. Democrats in Washington have made it clear that a Blue Wave flip of congressional control will mean investigations into the Trump administration’s corruption. As lawmakers grow increasingly frustrated with President Donald Trump's planned $1.8 billion lawsuit settlement fund and his thousands of stock trades totaling hundreds of millions dollars, a trio of House Democrats is launching a new caucus aimed at fighting malfeasance in government. The new End Corruption Caucus is launching at the direction of Representatives Jason Crow, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mike Levin, D-Calif., spanning the party's centrist to progressive wings. When Donald Trump is feeling down, he brings in his Cabinet which spends a couple of hours telling him how great he is. On Wednesday the latest gathering focused on extolling what great things Trump has done for the economy and bringing Iran to its knees … nevermind that neither is consistent with reality. In fact, the latest reports from the Trump government is that inflation moved higher again last month … to the highest level in 3 years. Yes, inflation was lower during the final 2 years of the Biden administration. All of this to help him cope with his cognitive decline and his pending mortality after continual images of his rotting hands, his incessant bragging about being able to pass rudimentary dementia tests (that seem to be a regular occurrence), and news that he's had not one, not two, but THREE physicals at Walter Reed Hospital in less than a year, along with the realization that he was facing humiliation in the mid-term elections … which, all of a sudden, he claims are meaningless for him.  And it gave Trump a chance to introduce the latest merch available for his flock to buy on his QVC-style website, even laying out his newest tacky 55-dollar baseball cap in front of each of his cabinet members. Thankfully, none of them wore them during the meeting…and there's no report if the men in the room were wearing their Trump-mandated Florsheim shoes. The Trump administration said Tuesday that it will admit an additional 10,000 white South Africans into the U.S. as refugees this year, increasing its historically low annual cap but still blocking people from other countries from entering through the program. Trump suspended the refugee program on his first day in office and, since then, has turned it into a vehicle to allow Afrikaners — a group of white South Africans descended mainly from Dutch settlers — into the U.S. And there's more than a little turmoil at Michigan State University. The Board of Trustees offered president Kevin Guskiewicz a $1-million pay raise and a contract extention. He said ‘no thanks' and, after just two years in East Lansing, moves to President of Clemson University. This, after the board enacts controversial rules muzzling individual members … and penalizing two trustees for refusing to agree to the changes.
