John the Baptist was not one to mince words, so while it must have been jarring, it wasn't too surprising that his greeting to the Pharisees and Sadducees was "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" Why did he start with this, and how can we learn from their mistakes and instead pursue a vibrant, living faith in Christ?

In today’s teaching within the book of Matthew, Pastor Ben explores the life and purpose of John the Baptist, or as Pastor Ben calls him, “John the Baptizer”. Here are some key points to look at: *John the (Baptist) Baptizer (What we think): 1. Crazy person who dresses really weird 2. Bug eating eccentric 3. Old Testament prophet (What the Bible says): 1. He will be the messenger and prepare the way before Jesus 2. Comes preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying, “For The Kingdom of Heaven is @ Hand” If you'd like to join us, please visit us at 4218 Boston Ave. Lubbock Texas. What can you learn from someone who lives in the wilderness and eats bugs? Listen in, and share!
Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
A study through Matthew.

As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What is Jesus saying about John with His question "A reed shaken by the wind?" We will look into this and the Prophecy by Isaiah calling John "A voice of one crying in the wilderness" as we continue the series on John the Baptist.

This is the third sermon in our series on the Gospel of Matthew.
In the busy demands of daily life in the 21st century we can easily lose sight of the big picture of where we are going eternally. God knows this and has given us many vivid word pictures of Jesus from Matthew to Revelation which are meant to lift our vision to the horizon of His glory which we will share with Him forever. These powerful visions are not just for a far away day; they are meant to inspire us and guide us in godly living today.
Advent is a time of preparation; more specifically, for the coming of Jesus. Why just limit this to a month? Shouldn’t we do this all the time? For one urgent reason, “Yes!” People’s eternal lives are at stake. Let’s be “turn signals” for Jesus, so people know Jesus is coming (again). Like a turn signal, John: 1. Got people’s attention by how wild he looked. (v.1, 3-6) Question: Do I look “wild” to other people when they look at me? 2. Told others a message, mainly the coming of Jesus. (v.2, 11) Question: How do I share about Jesus? 3. Challenged others to change direction. (v.7-9) Question: Do I challenge people’s worldview? 4. Warned of danger if message not heeded. (v.10, 12) Question: Can I warn others about Judgment Day? Testimony?

On the Second Sunday of Advent, as we light the candle of peace, we look to John the Baptist, preparing the way of the Lord, as a pathway to peace in the fullest sense of the word. We ask how we can be agents of peace during this Advent time of waiting and preparing.

John the Baptist was an unusual guy. Camel hair clothes and a locust diet will do that to you. So what drew people to him? What was it that would draw crowds from all over the country to listen to such a guy? #hope #turningtowardGod #Jesusiscoming

Hope Is Not Far Away, Advent Waiting
I can’t even count the number of times I’ve said “I’m sorry” to God, to others, or to myself only to commit the same sin I apologized for mere moments later. Craig’s sermon this Sunday focused on repentance—true repentance consisting of not just saying that we are sorry, but actually making a radical, dramatic change in our behavior. This transformation, of course, cannot happen without God’s mercy. Craig taught that change in our lives is possible (hallelujah!), but only when we are repentant. Because God is gracious, He does for humanity what it cannot do on its own. He provides a way for me and you to move from “naughty” to “nice” (to reference Santa Claus Is Coming to Town) through his unlimited mercy and forgiveness.
