Send us a text2 Ghost soundI am most happy, to be here, and as a ghost, my heart carries the weight of a funeral march, even in moments of applause.Interesting analogy, Maestro Tchaikovsky, but could you tell us a bit about your earthly background? Ah, yes… earthly my background. I was born in 1840, in a small Russian town nestled in the Ural Mountains. My father was an engineer in the mines, my mother of French ancestry, gentle but distant. Music was not the profession expected of me — Russia had no conservatory system then, no path for a composer. I was meant to become a civil servant, a reliable bureaucrat in the machinery of empire. What were your feelings about music as a young person?Ah music… music was in my blood. Even as a boy I could hear it whispering everywhere — in the birch forests, in the peasant songs that drifted on the wind, in the melancholy of Russian church bells. I studied law and served dutifully in the Ministry of Justice, but my heart withered there. When the Saint Petersburg Conservatory opened, I knew I must leave behind the safety of that life and risk everything for composition.Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Gaza Ceasefire Interrupted by Violence; Hamas Reasserts Dominance. David Daoud and Bill Roggio discuss how the Gaza ceasefire was violated when Hamas killed Israeli soldiers, prompting Israeli retaliation to reinforce red lines without restarting the conflict entirely. Hamas is deliberately slowing the return of dead hostages to stabilize the ceasefire internationally. In Gaza, Hamas immediately began cracking down on rivals to reassert its dominance and prevent others from filling the power vacuum left by IDF withdrawals, signaling it remains the top power. 1902 CARACAS

In Enemy Feminisms (Haymarket Books), described by Judith Butler as ‘honest, brutal, historically comprehensive, and brilliant', Sophie Lewis provides a field guide to the reactionary stereotypes that have affected and distorted feminisms past and present, and propounds a paradigm for a feminism that is inclusive, anticolonial and truly liberational. Lewis, author of Full Surrogacy Now and Abolish the Family, was joined in conversation about her work by Lola Olufemi, author of Feminism, Interrupted and Experiments in Imagining Otherwise. In this episode, we dissect one of South Carolina's most shocking examples of systemic failure in the criminal justice system. Alexander Devonte Dickey, a career criminal, racked up 35 years' worth of suspended sentences across multiple cases—all while judges repeatedly let him walk free. This pattern of judicial leniency culminated in the senseless murder of 22-year-old Logan Federico, sparking national outrage and a congressional hearing. We explore how South Carolina's unique judicial appointment system, political influence, and legal loopholes allowed this dangerous cycle to continue unchecked. Featuring unfiltered testimony from Logan's grieving father, we examine the consequences of a broken system, the role of prosecutors, and the urgent need for legislative reform to prevent future tragedies. From suspended sentences to systemic corruption, this episode reveals how the law failed and why justice must be reimagined.
Today's episode dives deep into the shocking realities of America's justice system, from South Carolina to Texas. We examine how decades of suspended sentences and judicial leniency allowed career criminals like Alexander Devonte Dickey to remain free, ultimately leading to the tragic death of Logan Federico. With firsthand testimony from her father, we uncover the systemic flaws, political influence, and legal loopholes that keep dangerous offenders on the streets. We also explore breakthroughs in cold case investigations, including the long-unsolved Yogurt Shop Murders in Austin, Texas, solved through modern DNA technology and persistent detective work, highlighting both the power and limitations of law enforcement. This episode exposes a justice system at a crossroads: the human cost of suspended sentences, the corruption baked into judicial appointments, and the life-saving potential of forensic innovation. It's a sobering look at how law, policy, and technology collide in cases of life, death, and accountability.

Sal and his co-host were taken aback when a caller named Joe, in the middle of discussing the Yankees' bullpen, abruptly announced "I have a cop in back of me" and hung up. The hosts then spent the rest of the segment trying to figure out if the caller was telling the truth or just using an outlandish excuse to get off the air. The "Call of the Day" highlighted the bizarre and unpredictable nature of live radio, as the conversation quickly shifted from baseball to the legitimacy of the caller's sudden departure, complete with a vivid reenactment and a humorous investigation into his intentions.

Jase and Al crack up recalling the time Jase was attacked by a group of utility workers with gardening tools after a particularly bad golf shot. Still standing by his recent rant about biblical fowl, Jase reluctantly shares the real reason Phil hated roosters and how he made that clear one afternoon during their childhood. Al describes a piece of art that's been stuck in his mind, and the guys discuss what it means to walk in the light while battling the darkness within. A follow up to his 2024 mixtape, Illegal Generation Vol. 1, Lil Internet brings you Vol. 2 — a new hour of fresh “gencore,” which aired today on Mark Leckey's monthly NTS radio show. [https://www.nts.live/shows/mark-leckey] “Compared to Volume 1,” Lil Internet writes, “Volume 2 feels closer to a truly functional example of what AI generated music might offer outside of joke songs and the emulation of styles that already exist—it's also more deranged.” “Both, however, are made in the tradition of sample-based, breakbeat driven dance music,” Lil Internet points out, which is to say music that “has always been made using the latest technology and stolen data (uncleared samples).” In this sense, Gencore is part of the natural evolution of what music critic Simon Reynolds named the “hardcore continuum.” Could one even argue that the big AI companies — sampling everything we type, everything we upload, everything we do — follow the same protocol? Perhaps the “hardcore continuum” has expanded from something we listen to into something we are living through. This week on The Watchers, Andrea and Jodie check themselves in for a review of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. We trace the long and winding road to bringing this film to the screen, talk about its unconventional on-location set, and reflect on how it launched so many of our favorite actors' careers. We also unpack the deep misogyny baked into the writing of Nurse Ratched as a monstrous woman. Next week, we're staying in the psych ward for the Cuckoo's Nest companion piece Girl, Interrupted. If you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. Welcome to Season 11 of The Hoffman Podcast. We begin our new season with Suleika Jaouad, an extraordinary writer, artist, and author - and deeply soulful human. Suleika is not a graduate of the Hoffman Process, but many in her circle have attended, and her work deeply reflects its spirit. Suleika Jaouad :: Photo by Nadia Albano Suleika speaks and writes about creative alchemy. Her recent bestselling memoir is The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life. An alchemical life is one where we learn to take the more challenging lead weights (events and experiences) of our lives and work with them. We alchemize them into something new, as the alchemists of old called them, the gold. Suleika has been doing exactly this since she was diagnosed with leukemia at 22. She spent the next year of her life shuttling between her childhood bedroom and chemo rooms instead of embarking on a traditional adult life. As she worked with what she was facing and brought it closer to her, her relationship with it and with herself transformed, alchemized. As Suleika shares in this conversation with Drew, "that's maybe our collective, forever work, what we do when things fall apart. For me, reconceiving of survival as a creative act of taking those moments where things fall apart and re-fastening them into something has been my way of finding my way." We hope you enjoy this soulful, inspiring conversation with Suleika and Drew. It's a beautiful beginning to our new season. More about Suleika Jaouad: Suleika Jaouad is a writer, artist, and author of the New York Times bestselling memoirs The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life and Between Two Kingdoms, which has been translated into over twenty languages. She writes the #1 Literature newsletter on Substack, the Isolation Journals, home to a creative community of over 230,000 readers from around the world. A three-time cancer survivor, she launched her career from her hospital bed at age 22 with the New York Times column and Emmy Award-winning video series “Life, Interrupted.” Her essays and reporting have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Guardian, and Vogue, among others. A sought-after speaker, her TED Talk, “What Almost Dying Taught Me About Living,” has more than five million views. Along with husband Jon Batiste, Jaouad is the subject of the Oscar-nominated and Grammy Award-winning documentary American Symphony, produced by the Obamas—a portrait of two artists during a year of extreme highs and lows. When her leukemia returned in 2022 and treatment complications temporarily compromised her vision, she turned to painting to transcribe her fever dreams and medication-induced hallucinations. This vibrant, visceral record of grief and desire has since expanded to include large-scale watercolors, exhibited in The Alchemy of Blood, a joint show with Jaouad's mother, the artist Anne Francey, at ArtYard. Most recently, she was commissioned to paint a grand piano for the 2024 Super Bowl in New Orleans, now on display at the New Orleans Museum of Art. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and trio of rescue dogs. Find out more about Suleika at suleikajaouad.com. Follow Suleika on Instagram and the Isolation Journals Newsletter on Substack. Eudora Welty quote: "I don't think we often see life resolving itself, not in any sort of perfect way, but I like the fiction writer's feeling of being able to confront an experience and resolve it as art, however imperfectly and briefly—to give it a form and try to embody it—to hold it and express it in a story's terms." On this episode of Expanded Perspectives, Kyle flies solo in Skelekin Studios. He kicks things off with exciting news — the long-awaited Glimmer Man book is finished, sent to the editors, and on track for release soon. Then, Kyle revisits one of the most famous UFO encounters in history: the 1961 abduction of Betty and Barney Hill. Driving home late one September night, the couple spotted a strange light in the sky. What began as curiosity quickly spiraled into terror — the object followed them, hovered low, and revealed figures watching from inside. Moments later, the Hills heard an unsettling series of buzzing sounds, and their memories fractured. By the time they reached home, two hours had vanished without explanation. In the days that followed, physical evidence and disturbing dreams deepened the mystery: torn clothing, scuffed shoes, magnetic anomalies on their car, and vivid visions of being taken aboard a craft. Under hypnosis, both Betty and Barney described nearly identical experiences of medical examinations and encounters with non-human beings. Were their memories the product of suggestion, stress, or sleep paralysis? Or did the Hills truly become the first widely publicized abductees in modern UFO history? Their story continues to spark debate, making it one of the most enduring cases of all time. All that and more on this episode of Expanded Perspectives! Suleika Jaouad is a New York Times-bestselling author and journalist. When Jaouad was just 22-years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia, sidelining her dream of becoming a foreign correspondent. Instead, she chronicled her cancer battle in the New York Times column "Life, Interrupted", and went on to write a best-selling memoir. Jaouad opened up to Hoda about her journaling practice, which inspired her latest book "The Book of Alchemy: Creative Prompts for an Inspired Life."
