Season 8 Episode 4 - Winona Ryder in the 80's & 90's

Season 8 continues with a deep, affectionate dive into one of the most important and quietly influential film careers of the late 20th century — Winona Ryder.Dangerous Dave explores how Winona became the defining face of outsider cool, Gen-X intelligence, and emotional honesty across the 1980s and 1990s. We rewind the clock in What Happened Way Back When, digging into obscure movies, cult songs, and forgotten TV shows from the era that shaped her rise, before hitting Retro Headlines from the UK and the US to set the cultural backdrop. In a long-form Dangerous Deep Dive, the episode charts Winona's journey from teenage breakout to generational icon, with detailed discussion of her 80s films (Lucas, Beetlejuice, Heathers) and her defining 90s run (Edward Scissorhands, Reality Bites, Little Women, Girl, Interrupted). Each era is unpacked with context, behind-the-scenes stories, and why these roles still resonate today.Elsewhere in the episode:

The Mysticism of Being Interrupted: A Gospel Reflection on Matthew 4:12–23

This reflection began as Mass prep for Sunday's Gospel (Matthew 4:12–23), but it quickly became something more interior. In this episode, I linger with the moment Jesus interrupts ordinary lives by the Sea of Galilee—calling fishermen who move before they understand, leaving everything behind. We explore interruption and overwhelm not as problems to fix, but as signs of God's nearness.Drawing from Scripture, the Psalms, and the lives of the saints—especially Mary—we reflect on how God often calls not through explanation, but through Presence. The fear of the Lord, awe, and holy overwhelm are not obstacles to faith, but often its beginning. This is both a Gospel reflection and a mystical meditation for anyone who feels interrupted, unsettled, or overtaken by God.

When Worship Is Interrupted: Where Do I Put My Weight?

In this episode of Truth Talk Live, I reflect on the recent disruption of a Sunday worship service in Minneapolis and ask a question that can't be answered by politics, outrage, or security plans alone: What happens to our faith when the world barges into sacred space, and are we actually prepared for that moment? As churches face increasing hostility, the conversation often turns quickly to fear, anger, or strategy. I wanted to slow that down and look instead at spiritual readiness. Drawing from Scripture, historic hymns, and decades of lived experience walking through suffering, I explore what it means to be vigilant without becoming hardened, prepared without becoming fearful, and faithful without becoming reactive. Listeners call in with passages from Romans, Hebrews, Luke, the Psalms, and Paul's letters, all pointing to the same unshakable truth: God's people have never been promised freedom from opposition, but we have been promised a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. The real question is whether we are grounding ourselves deeply enough in God's Word for it to come out of us when pressure hits. I close the program by returning to the hymn How Firm a Foundation, particularly the line, "The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose." Repose is not escape or passivity. It is settled trust. It is the rest that comes when something stronger is carrying the load. When worship is disrupted, faith is mocked, and fear presses in, the issue is not whether the church can hold its ground, but whether we know where to stand. Long before crisis arrives, each of us must answer a simple, searching question: What do I believe, and where am I placing my weight? There's More at HOPEFORTHECAREGIVER.com

Brittany Murphy, the talented actress known for Clueless, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, and Uptown Girls, died at age 32 on December 20, 2009, in her Hollywood Hills home from accidental pneumonia, severe anemia, and prescription drug intoxication. Five months later, her husband Simon Monjack died in the same house from nearly identical causes. Official investigations ruled both deaths accidental and preventable, with no evidence of foul play, illegal drugs, toxic mold, or poisoning. Despite this, speculation continues around toxic mold, heavy metal poisoning (based on a disputed hair test), Sharon Murphy's possible role (as Brittany's devoted mother, sole heir, and close companion to Simon after the death), the home's eerie history (previous owners Madonna and Britney Spears reported unsettling “haunted” experiences), and even far-fetched links to Sean “P Diddy” Combs. As of 2026, experts maintain the deaths were tragic coincidences due to untreated illness and self-medication, with no credible evidence supporting conspiracy theories.   This episode supports The Branch of Hope Foundation January 2025 sponsored charity: The Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation -  A charitable organization established in 2020 by their daughter Alex Krawczyk to honor the memory and continue the philanthropic vision of Barry Sherman, the founder of Apotex, and his wife Honey, following their tragic deaths in 2017. Its primary purpose is to support charitable organizations focused on healthcare equity, human rights, scientific education and research, and Jewish community institutions, thereby furthering the couple's unfinished philanthropic aims. The foundation directs grants to initiatives that improve lives, advance medical care and accessibility (such as donations to hospitals and vision care programs), promote scientific discovery, and strengthen community organizations. By building on the Shermans' long-standing commitment to giving it creates a lasting legacy of impactful philanthropy.   Sources: Chubb, H., & Krauser, E. (2025, December 20). His parents brought him specifically because they were worried. His mother had been telling friends for weeks they were at their wits' end. We've tried everything, she said.Three weeks after the murders, Nick's high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson quit the case — but not before declaring to cameras that Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder under California law. In this message, we explore how God often works through interruptions, why His favor doesn’t always feel favorable, and how Mary’s response teaches us to be curious, confident, and ultimately surrendered to God’s purposes. As we step into a new year, this episode invites us to trust God in the disruptions and respond with a faithful, courageous “yes.” Renaissance Church - Richmond, Texas ren-church.org #alloflifealltheearth #walkgrowlive #christmas #advent

This week's interview with the cofounders of SheWrites.com, Kamy Wicoff and Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, is especially touching for Brooke because these two women are where it all started. This week's interview is about why community matters as told through the histories and sensibilities of two community champions who started something that lit the literary world on fire in 2009. SheWrites back then was a little bit like Substack is today, but with small breakout groups and a lot of meet-ups happening in the real world. The feminist sensibility of SheWrites was what drew Brooke to the platform, and to Kamy and Deborah in those early days when she was a Senior and then Executive Editor at Seal Press—and this origin story is both a walk down memory lane and an inspiring episode on the enduring power of community. Kamy Wicoff is a writer, former publisher, and psychotherapist with a degree in social work. Kamy holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Columbia and is the author of several books, including the novel Wishful Thinking and the nonfiction book I Do But I Don't: Why the Way We Marry Matters, and has contributed to multiple anthologies, most recently Feminists Reclaim Mentorship: An Anthology. Kamy is the cofounder of She Writes Press. She serves as a trustee on the board of the Brooklyn Public Library and lives with her husband and their four sons in Brooklyn. Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, PhD is a Visiting Scholar in Gender & Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University and the author of Sisterhood, Interrupted and co-editor of the literary anthology Only Child. She is a regular on Chicago's “live lit” storytelling stages. Deborah's essay “My Husband, the Reluctant Barista” just appeared this past October in the Modern Love column at The New York Times. Her op-eds and essays on gender, motherhood, family, feminism, and writing have appeared in Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and elsewhere. She's a TEDx speaker, a longtime coach and champion of writers, and her coaching company, Girl Meets Voice, Inc., has supported hundreds of established and emerging writers. Together, they cofounded SheWrites.com in 2009. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
