Ep 174 Menopause Symptoms and Hormone Therapy with the OvaryActive Doctors

Baby Or Bust

Could your sleepless nights, mood swings, joint pain, or "I just don't feel like myself" feelings be connected to perimenopause? Do you really need hormone testing to know what is happening? And is menopause hormone therapy actually as scary as we were once told?  Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su and Dr. Amy Voedisch, hosts of OvaryActive and co-authors of Estrogen, Interrupted, join Dr. Lora Shahine for this episode of Brave & Curious. Their conversation opens up a thoughtful, funny, and myth-busting conversation about menopause, perimenopause, hormone health, and why women deserve to understand their bodies. They also explain the difference between menopause and perimenopause, why symptoms can start years before periods stop, why hormone labs often do not tell the full story, and how symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, vaginal dryness, weight changes, itchy ears (yes, we said "itchy ears"), burning mouth, and joint pain can all fit into the bigger picture. Perimenopause is often a "story-based" diagnosis rather than a single lab result, and treatment options are available. This conversation will walk listeners through all of that and more. Listeners will feel informed, validated, and ready to ask better questions. In this episode you'll hear: [0:24] Meet The Doctors of Ovaryactive Podcast [10:45] Defining menopause and perimenopause [14:55] Common Symptoms (More than Hot Flashes) [18:37] Why labs fall short [23:07] Unusual menopause symptoms [28:05] Diagnosing perimenopause and menopause [32:17] Non-hormonal treatment options [42:18] The WHI study [50:45] Breast cancer risk and Hormone Therapy [59:51] Talking to your doctor   Resources mentioned:  perimenopausedrs.com/ovaryactive Follow the show @OvaryActive Instagram | YouTube  Estrogen, Interrupted by Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su & Dr. Amy Voedisch   More information about Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su:  Gennev:  www.gennev.com/clinician/dr-rebecca-dunsmoor-su LinkedIn @rebecca-dunsmoor-su   More information about Dr. Amy Voedisch: Stanford Medical Clinic: stanfordhealthcare.org/doctors/v/amy-voedisch.html   Dr. Shahine's Weekly Newsletter on Fertility News and Recommendations Follow @drlorashahine Instagram | YouTube | Tiktok | Her Books Join the Learn at Pinnacle app to earn FREE CE Credit for listening to this episode!   This episode was produced by Audiotocracy Podcast Production.

The history of Japanese Australians goes back over 100 years. However, it was severely interrupted by the mass deportation in 1946, following the WWII. A photographic exhibition depicting Japanese immigrants from the late 19th to the early 20th century—the period before this break—is currently being held in Cowra, New South Wales, known as the ‘Town of Reconciliation'. It is an attempt to highlight the role and contributions of Japanese immigrants during the period when Australia was beginning to take shape as a nation. We spoke to Dr Tetsu Kimura, a cultural historian at Flinders University who curated the exhibition, and Dr Peter Prince, a legal historian and Research Affiliate at the University of Sydney Faculty of Law, who talks about his research on Jiro Muramatsu, an Australian who is buried in Cowra as a Japanese national.

On today's pages, Chullin 31 and 32, the rabbis examine what happens when ritual slaughter is interrupted midway through the act. The Mishna says that a pause is only disqualifying if it lasts as long as another act of slaughter, but the Gemara immediately asks what that measurement actually means. The daf becomes a display of rabbinic reasoning at its finest, testing every possible definition until the law can be stated with care and precision. How exact must our thinking be when even a pause can change everything? Listen and find out.

The Wound, the Work, and the Way Forward. Trauma Interrupted with Jan Broberg is here. In our first episode, Jan Broberg, Teresa Agustin, and her son Austen Tanner share the story behind the show and why it exists.Content advisory: child sexual abuse, grooming, and substance use recovery. In the first episode of Trauma Interrupted, host Jan Broberg sits down with Teresa Agustin, JBF Board Chair and creator of Spot 6, and her son Austen Tanner, JBF Co-Founder and co-creator of the T.I.M.E. Program, to introduce the show, the foundation's three pillars of Awareness, Community, and Justice, and the programs they have spent the past two years building. Together, they trace why the rebrand from, The Jan Broberg Show, to Trauma Interrupted is more than a name change. They talk about how Survivor Circle evolved from an early community called Thrivivors, why the T.I.M.E. Program (Trauma Interrupted, Mitigated, and Expressed) was built as peer-led and community-sustained, and how SPOT6 teaches the six stages of child grooming so adults can recognize patterns before abuse happens. Teresa shares her grooming story and the decade of silence that followed. Austen speaks about addiction, recovery, and why peer-to-peer community matters for healing. Jan ties it back to the foundation's broader mission of breaking the cycles of abuse that depend on secrecy. If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below: National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988 National Sexual Assault Hotline  (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264

The Mirror Method, the WAIT Acronym, and Why "Learn Fast" Beats "Fail Fast": Lee Health CSIO Lisa Martinez on Challenging the Status Quo — Part 2 She walked into a conference room as the only woman in a room full of men in technical data roles. They introduced themselves to each other and started the meeting without acknowledging her at all. She paused, said "excuse me," stated her name, her role, and why she was there. It startled them. She was glad she did it. Because if she hadn't, she wouldn't have belonged in the conversation that followed. In Part 2 of this conversation, Lisa Martinez, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Lee Health, moves from personal story into the specific leadership tools she uses every day to challenge the status quo, orchestrate high-stakes conversations, and move organizations through change without creating enemies. You'll learn: The Mirror Method: why the most dangerous thing you can do when entering a new organization is come in with a fix-it mentality, and the structured listening approach that gets people to agree the status quo needs to change before you ever propose a solution WAIT — "Why Am I Talking?" — the acronym she uses to decide when her voice advances a conversation and when silence does more How she reads the nonverbals of an entire organization the same way she reads body language in a room, and what signals tell her when trust is building and when it isn't Why she stopped relying on PowerPoint and what changed when she started looking people in the eye instead of at her slides, including the mentor advice that saved her: "be ready to deliver a 5-minute version of what you just created"  The difference between intellectual sparring and debate, and how she creates conditions for divergent thinking that actually leads to decisions, not just more discussion Why she says "learn fast" instead of "fail fast", and how she navigates naysayers, skeptics, and the inevitable "you paid how much for what?" moments in healthcare innovation What she looks for when building a team: curiosity, courage, and comfort with ambiguity, and why trustworthiness ranks above everything else About Lisa Martinez: Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Lee Health, Lisa leads strategic planning, innovation, and organizational transformation across one of Florida's largest health systems. You've probably experienced this…You had a plan. You were focused. You were doing everything “right.”And then suddenly…not yet.Everything shifted.Things slowed down.Or stopped altogether. And just like that, what once felt clear… now feels a little uncertain. It's frustrating. It's confusing. And if you're honest, it can make you question everything. In this episode of Dr. Davina's Dots, we slow things down and take a different look at interruptions. What if they're not stopping you…but redirecting you?Through calming reflections and relaxing jazz, this episode creates space for you to pause, breathe, and reconsider the moments that didn't go as planned.Because sometimes it's not about staying on track. It's about learning how to adjust when the track changes. And that ability, to adapt, to shift, to keep moving forward in a new way, might matter more than getting it “right” the first time.If you've ever felt thrown off course, delayed, or unsure why things didn't work out the way you expected…this episode is your reminder:An interruption doesn't mean the dream is over.It might just mean there's another way forward. All this week we've been looking at how smartphones are cutting into the sleep time our kids desperately need, and what we as parents must do to remedy this problem. Because we as Christian parents must teach our kids to glorify God in every nook and cranny of their lives, we must set the table for them to sleep counter-culturally, worshipping God through good stewardship of their bodies by getting enough rest. First, do not allow your children and teens to sleep with any devices in their room. Remove the tempting distraction! Second, keep your child's phone in a secure place to charge overnight. Turn the phone off so that notifications are silenced. Third, expect pushback from your child. Let them know that your action is not due to mistrust, but to responsibly fulfilling your role to love and parent them by God's design. And finally, remind your child that God has created our bodies for a rhythm of work and rest, and that a lack of sleep only brings harm.

All this week we're looking together at how smartphones are cutting into the sleep time our kids need, and what we as parents must do to remedy this problem. Parents, here are just some of the dangers associated with digitally-interrupted sleep. First there's anxiety and depression. Counselors who screen patients for these issues will oftentimes first ask patients if they are getting enough sleep. A lack of sleep not only leads to anxiety and depression, but will make them worsen over time. Second, there's decreased academic performance. Kids who are sleep-deprived are sleepy during the day, exhibit a reduction in cognitive skills, and wind up with lower grades. Third, there's the health issue of obesity. People who are tired crave and eat more food. Fourth, there's an increased risk of heart disease. Fifth, neurological functions suffer. For example, one's driving ability. And finally, a lack of sleep leads to aggressive and inappropriate behavior. Tomorrow, we look at parental action steps.

All this week we're looking together at the issue of how smartphones are cutting into the sleep time our kids desperately need, and what we as parents must do to remedy this problem. Parents, I want to share with you some realities that demand your attention and response. Researchers tell us that eighty-nine percent of our teenagers keep at least one electronic device in their bedroom at night, usually a smartphone. While thirty-six percent of teenagers sleep with their phone in their bed or on their pillow, it's reasonable to assume that most others keep the phone within reach by placing it on a bedside stand or on the floor next to their bed. And six out of ten kids ages eleven to seventeen use their phones between midnight and five am on school nights. And one-third of all teens admit to waking up in the middle of the night to use their phones. Is this a problem? You bet. There are many dangers associated with digitally-interrupted sleep. Tune in tomorrow as I share some of those dangers.

All this week we're looking together at the issue of how smartphones are cutting into the sleep time our kids desperately need, and what we as parents must do to remedy this problem. For our kids today, uninterrupted sleep is about as familiar to them as pay-phones, black and white TVs, transistor radios, and other artifacts that they see as part of their parents' olden days. Researchers tell us that children and teens have always needed just over nine hours of uninterrupted sleep for healthy growth and development. This is the way God has created our kids to grow, and he has established a need for all of us to experience a daily rhythm of waking time and rest. But judging from what the research is telling us about new patterns of adolescent sleep, healthy physical and emotional teenage development is also in jeopardy of becoming an artifact of the past. Teenage pressures and distractions are on the increase, while good old-fashioned uninterrupted sleep is on the decline.

In fact, recent research says that the most common point of parent-child conflict these days is screen time and what is and is not appropriate. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Kyel, author of the book On a Break in Charm City. Award-winning author Pamela Kyel was born and raised in Edgewood, Maryland—north of Charm City. It's kind of a running joke that when you live near a large, well-known city, you tell people that's where you're from. So, unofficially, she's from Baltimore!   She followed the drum of the Air Force for 25 years. She joined her husband on six assignments—OCONUS (Outside Continental United States), aka overseas, and CONUS (Continental United States). Along the way, they added two children and numerous pets, not counting the half-a-dozen cats that came with their house in Italy. She has traveled extensively across the states and Europe, with her favorite overseas locations being Paris and Slovenia, among stateside favorites such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Door County, Wisconsin.   Family is important to her, and nowhere is that more evident than in her Charm City Mystery Series. When you've lived across the world from mothers and brothers, you adapt and overcome. You create family—and they stay with you long after the career ends. Her military family resides in Virginia, Texas, and North and South Carolina—with many still on active duty worldwide.   Writing came out of their duty station in Illinois. She picked up her computer while sitting with her elementary-age child through covid classes and thought, I can write a book. And the rest is history. While her original novel will never see the light of day, she grew and expanded her confidence in what she was doing. She was good at this, and she would have something to show for it one day. In a little over three years, she'd trod the agent querying circuit and amended her goal. Now, she just needed to hold her book in her hand. It was necessary. With that in mind, she sent out three queries to small publishers, and for her, the third time was the charm. The Wild Rose Press picked up her book and offered a contract. Less than a year later, she now held all those years of hard work in her hand.    In my book review, I stated On a Break in Charm City is a cozy mystery by Pamela Kyel. This is the third in her Charm City Mystery series, and once again, Pamela does not disappoint! I love this cast of characters including Laci Duval, an investigator with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. However, she is forced to take a vacation. But if you know Laci, you know she doesn't do relaxation. Instead, she finds looking for a missing person who just happens to be NSA.   Laci is funny, clutzy, a bit socially awkward, and thinks of everyone as a type of iced tea. In this installment, we continue her journey with potential love interest, Antonio, and keep up with her best friends Sammie and Cassy, as well as Rev and, new to this series, his brother Lum.   If you like a good mystery, with twists and turns, break-ins, fires, kidnapping, computer programming, surveillance cameras, trackers, and even Russians, then this is the cozy for you!   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Pamela Kyel Website: https://pamelakyel.com/ FB: @Pamela Kyle Author IG: @pamelakyel TikTok: @pamelakyel LinkedIn: @Pamela Kyel   Purchase On a Break in Charm City on Amazon: Paperback: Ebook: https://amzn.to/4cNRwbp   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? A murder-for-hire requires a network. Communication. Agreement. Multiple people who knew something and either chose to be part of it or chose not to interrupt it. Every one of those people was an interruption point. Every one of those points was passed through without the chain breaking.Part 5 — the final episode of One Mile From Home — examines those interruption points, and the psychology that keeps them from being used. Tony Brueski breaks down probability discounting — the documented cognitive bias that causes the brain to systematically underweight the likelihood that someone it knows will commit violence. The specific social calculus that almost always favors waiting over naming. The way "it probably won't go that far" wins the internal argument right up until the moment it shouldn't.He examines Henry Tenon — the final link — not as a monster but as the endpoint of a chain that had multiple human beings attached to it above him. Whiteout Warning Part 2 - What the Warden InterruptedWinter is supposed to loosen its grip this time of year.Across much of the country the snow has begun to melt, rivers have started moving again, and the woods are slowly waking from that long seasonal silence. According to tradition, we were promised six more weeks of winter. But in many places the season seems ready to move on.Still… winter doesn't surrender quietly. In parts of the United States, storms continue to roll through the mountains and river valleys. Blowing snow. Sudden temperature drops. And in some regions, travelers are still hearing a phrase that carries a particular kind of warning:Whiteout conditions. The kind of weather where the land disappears.Where distance collapses.Where the world shrinks to the narrow reach of your headlights. It's during moments like that—when visibility fades and the wilderness feels suddenly larger—that strange things have a way of appearing.Tonight's story is the beginning of a three-part series called Whiteout Warning. It takes us back to the winter of 1999, in a small town called Greyhaven, where the end of the century arrived under heavy skies and deepening snow.A game warden was found dead beside the Ashkine River.A storm closed the roads. And somewhere in the woods upriver, something large was moving through the snow. The people of Greyhaven would later realize that the storm wasn't the only thing moving through those woods. And when the snow finally stopped falling…it revealed tracks no one in town was ready to explain.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bigfoot-s-wilderness-podcast--4730412/support.
