Persuasion is not a word we hear often, but the reality is that we all find ourselves in acts of persuasion throughout each day. We use persuasive tactics in our interactions with family, co-workers, neighbors, and strangers without even realizing it. If you want to be more persuasive, empathetic, generous, and understanding in your relationships, you don’t want to miss today’s show. Jason Harris is CEO of the award-winning creative agency, Mekanism, co-founder of the Creative Alliance, and author of the national bestseller, The Soulful Art of Persuasion. Jason works closely with brands through a blend of soul and science to create provocative campaigns that engage audiences. Jason has been named in the Top Ten Most Influential Social Impact Leaders, as well as the 4A’s list of “100 People Who Make Advertising Great.” His methods are so effective that they are studied in cases at Harvard Business School.  How to stand out in business Do you need a different approach to your business? Jason’s book contains a unique approach, and the feedback he’s received shows that people have responded well to his ideas. Many have adopted Jason’s actionable principles and turned them into action steps for their own success. Jason doesn’t just state abstract theories for people to follow, but he gives habits and examples to be put into practice that can truly make a difference. The book is original and authentic in every way, which stays true to Jason’s values. He explains that to stand out in your business, you have to lead with originality and vulnerability.  TWEET: Turn actionable principles into action steps for success! @jason_harris #chasingdreams Live with generosity Are you a generous person? What Jason means by leading a life of generosity is to give something away with every interaction and to leave someone better off for having crossed paths with you. Advising, counseling, and sharing can all be part of generosity as you let someone know that you are thinking of them and care about their interests. Generosity can be shown in giving a gift to someone, but Jason challenges people to think of it in less tangible ways. He explains how it’s been the hardest thing for him to learn, but being generous has helped him be successful because people are drawn to generous people. These “things” you give away will come back to you with compounded interest. Being open enough to ask for favors and help is another form of generosity, as demonstrated by the Ben Franklin effect, which Jason explains in detail.  TWEET: Give something away with every interaction and leave someone better off for having crossed paths with you. @jason_harris #chasingdreams What the world needs now is . . . empathy Would you call yourself an empathetic person? Even though, as humans, we are 99.9% the same as each other, empathy seems to be in very short supply in today’s world. Empathy is developing a natural curiosity for others, along with listening and understanding people more. We don’t often know and understand the micro experiences that contribute to people’s beliefs and opinions about certain issues. Once we know their back story, we can better understand why they think or act the way they do. That is empathy, and it takes more time and effort than judging people quickly and painting everyone with a broad brush. Jason explains that another part of empathy involves collaboration, which is reaching out to others and asking for help when you need it.  TWEET: Once we know someone’s back story, we can better understand why they think or act the way they do. @jason_harris #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action step for a dream chaser to take-”Be a dream chaser.” OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [0:04] Jason’s book and his viewpoint on persuasion [4:00] The reception to Jason’s book [9:57] The importance of the stories within us [15:10] The importance of generosity [18:45] The Ben Franklin effect [21:37] The principle of empathy [30:09] We don’t hear to listen [31:02] Soulfulness [39:02] The writing experience [41:38] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Jason’s Twitter Jason’s Instagram Jason’s LinkedIn For a Sneak Peek of Jason’s Book: The Soulful Art of Persuasion Purchase The Soulful Art of Persuasion on Amazon! It’s always a thrill to catch up with a former guest, especially one who has been super-successful in chasing dreams and achieving goals. Today’s guest appeared on Episode 18--way back in 2015. Let’s check in and see what’s new! From the chauffeur seat to the C-suite, Tony Woodall has used his Goal Getting program to go from 50 to 32 in waist size and is in better shape now than he was in his 30’s. He’s become a master at achieving his goals and helping his clients do the same. As a coach, speaker, consultant, and the author of 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement, Tony proves that you’re never too old to achieve your goals and dreams. This host of the Goal Getting podcast has inspired and helped people reach their high-performance goals, and he’s worked with realtors, lenders, bankers, and other corporations to reach their potential and beyond. Making a commitment Where have you made the biggest commitment? Like many people, Tony has battled weight gain for much of his life. Within the past year, he’s dropped from 300 lbs. to 185 and increased his level of physical fitness and overall health. Why has the weight loss process been different this time? Tony explains that the most significant difference has been the commitment he made to himself, most notably in writing a commitment letter, a promissory note of sorts, that he wrote to himself. The motivation for the letter was diabetes, high blood pressure, and other problems as his 60th birthday approached. He says that he wanted to take the money he spent on medications and use it for traveling, having fun, and enjoying life. The key was simple, although not easy: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” TWEET: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams Every little step is progress Does achieving a goal bring you happiness? We all know the joy and satisfaction that come from accomplishments. Tony acknowledged this happiness every time he met small goals along the way of his journey to better health. He says that the ability to grow and see progress is a need that humans have. Every little step toward a goal is a positive moment that deserves a reward. Seeing those small steps gives you the momentum to keep moving forward. Tony was even able to start running, which was something he never thought he could do. He says, “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” TWEET: “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams No more excuses Do you make excuses as to why you can’t accomplish specific goals? Tony was used to making excuses as to why he couldn’t do certain things because he was fat and overweight. As a result of chasing his weight loss and fitness goals, Tony now has the motivation to step out toward accomplishing other goals in his life. One example of that is in personal relationships. Tony now has the mentality to try something new as a ripple effect of the dreams he has already chased.  Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Set your goal. Write it down. Don’t let anyone stop you. Your choice of decisions is what will rule your life.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:33] The biggest accomplishments for Tony since 2015 [3:07] The challenge of weight loss [6:46] “Taming the tiger” [7:57] Overcoming obstacles [10:14] Facing temptation head on [12:12] Setting goals [13:07] The correlation between accomplishing a goal and happiness [15:37] Tony’s journey: past and present [19:54] Taking on a new journey [23:17] Making changes in other areas [25:59] Don’t neglect the small dreams [28:04] The impact we have on others [30:39] The satisfaction we get from achieving our goals [34:38] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: http://aimeej21.com/episode18   Hear Tony’s previous episode! Pat Iyer has worked with experts since she first began writing and editing books in 1985, all while she excelled in her chosen profession of nursing. In addition to helping people share their knowledge, she has written or edited over 800 chapters, books, case studies, articles, and online courses. She delights in assisting people to share their expertise by writing a book, and she serves others as a development editor and ghostwriter. Pat built a service business assisting attorneys with cases involving medical issues. After growing that legal nursing consulting business for 25 years, she sold it in 2015 and now devotes her time to mentoring, writing, and editing. Finding a career path: Have you felt personal, family, or societal constraints in choosing YOUR career path? When Pat was choosing a career, back in 1969, the world was a very different place for women, and “accepted” careers were limited to just a few. Pat chose nursing, because she wanted to help people and wanted to maintain a long-lasting career. Although she adhered to those constraints, she dabbled in writing and teaching, and found in nursing a versatile career that also included other professions. TWEET: It’s easy to be so caught up in what the business needs that you’re blinded to what your family needs. @patiyer Fighting against limiting beliefs: Are you an unsuspecting victim to limiting beliefs? One example that Pat shares is the belief that an MBA is essential for running a successful business. Pat—along with many others—proves this to be untrue. Her advice is to not let yourself fall into the trap of associating only with those who share the same knowledge base that you do. Welcome new opportunities, meet new people, and never stop learning! TWEET: Once you become a #nurse, there’s no such thing as a “former nurse.” You remain a nurse in your interactions with people. @patiyer Unexpected outcomes: Do you need to change your mindset around the word failure? Pat doesn’t believe in failure, but chooses to call it an “unexpected outcome.” She shares a personal experience in which she was driven to share her knowledge with people, but found an unreceptive audience. As she struggled to connect and get the attention she desired for what she was offering, she realized that she was experiencing an unexpected outcome. Luckily for her, she was soon able to connect to the right person and turn that outcome around into success. The key? Don’t be afraid to try new things! TWEET: The power of #podcasting is phenomenal. @patiyer Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream-chaser to take—“Watch out for ‘dream stealers’. Be clear about why you want to do something and who you want to serve.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:10] Pat’s Legal Nurse podcast (also at Ep. 124) [1:54] Pat’s dream when she was growing up, which aligned with expectations for women at that time [4:50] “Once a nurse, always a nurse” [7:25] How Pat became a writer and editor and started legal nurse consulting [12:00] Success and passion, all without an MBA [15:06] Repurposing material: a real money-maker [18:47] Why a podcast? For Mat Poovan, the path to his dreams was filled with unexpected twists and turns. He always had lofty ambitions and a clear path to follow to achieve his goals. But, on the road to some of those goals, Mat found his true passion: Indian classical music. Specifically, it was the sitar that grabbed his attention. Mat discovered the sitar quite by accident, while attending class and studying ancient India. His teacher played Indian classical music in the background and the rest, as they say, is history. From there, Mat pursued his passion for music, but it was balanced with some other passions - creating a full life of being a business consultant by day and a talented musician by night. TWEET: Discovering your #dreams when you least expect to, on this episode of #ChasingDreams Following his path - even though it was unexpected. When Mat started school, he had already been studying the sitar for several years. He knew he had to be more practical about school, so he decided to major in political science with a minor in economics. Mat’s end goal was to become an ambassador eventually. As his passion for music grew, Mat’s goals in political science shifted. He made some changes so that he could pursue both passions - changing his major and eventually discovered instructional design. His passion for instructional design would pave the way for a solid career as a business consultant, while allowing Mat the freedom to pursue music in his downtime. Finding your true passion and pursuing it with all that you’ve got. Mat discusses his passion for instructional design and walks us down the path of discovering the sitar at a young age, and how he ended up with his first instrument. Once Mat set his sights on learning the sitar, everything fell into place around it. He found a local teacher who was an expert in Indian classical music and he was able to develop his skills over the years. His love of the sitar and Indian classical music as a whole was clear - and Mat eventually found himself being encouraged to become a teacher. This led to many new opportunities in the music industry, including his work with the Indian Academy of Music & Fine Arts and his work with the record label Aimrec. He also discusses how uncommon it is to find an American-born Indian who plays the sitar. In reality, Mat had become a trendsetter and was blazing a trail for budding musicians who wanted to follow his path. He discusses his goals within music, as well as his other career in industrial design, and shares insight into some “bucket list” items he’d like to conquer. One of his bucket list items? To record an album and eventually win a Grammy. Mat believes in dreaming big, and that’s just what he does. The key to following your dreams? Just start.
