It’s always a thrill to catch up with a former guest, especially one who has been super-successful in chasing dreams and achieving goals. Today’s guest appeared on Episode 18--way back in 2015. Let’s check in and see what’s new! From the chauffeur seat to the C-suite, Tony Woodall has used his Goal Getting program to go from 50 to 32 in waist size and is in better shape now than he was in his 30’s. He’s become a master at achieving his goals and helping his clients do the same. As a coach, speaker, consultant, and the author of 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement, Tony proves that you’re never too old to achieve your goals and dreams. This host of the Goal Getting podcast has inspired and helped people reach their high-performance goals, and he’s worked with realtors, lenders, bankers, and other corporations to reach their potential and beyond. Making a commitment Where have you made the biggest commitment? Like many people, Tony has battled weight gain for much of his life. Within the past year, he’s dropped from 300 lbs. to 185 and increased his level of physical fitness and overall health. Why has the weight loss process been different this time? Tony explains that the most significant difference has been the commitment he made to himself, most notably in writing a commitment letter, a promissory note of sorts, that he wrote to himself. The motivation for the letter was diabetes, high blood pressure, and other problems as his 60th birthday approached. He says that he wanted to take the money he spent on medications and use it for traveling, having fun, and enjoying life. The key was simple, although not easy: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” TWEET: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams Every little step is progress Does achieving a goal bring you happiness? We all know the joy and satisfaction that come from accomplishments. Tony acknowledged this happiness every time he met small goals along the way of his journey to better health. He says that the ability to grow and see progress is a need that humans have. Every little step toward a goal is a positive moment that deserves a reward. Seeing those small steps gives you the momentum to keep moving forward. Tony was even able to start running, which was something he never thought he could do. He says, “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” TWEET: “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams No more excuses Do you make excuses as to why you can’t accomplish specific goals? Tony was used to making excuses as to why he couldn’t do certain things because he was fat and overweight. As a result of chasing his weight loss and fitness goals, Tony now has the motivation to step out toward accomplishing other goals in his life. One example of that is in personal relationships. Tony now has the mentality to try something new as a ripple effect of the dreams he has already chased. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Set your goal. Write it down. Don’t let anyone stop you. Your choice of decisions is what will rule your life.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:33] The biggest accomplishments for Tony since 2015 [3:07] The challenge of weight loss [6:46] “Taming the tiger” [7:57] Overcoming obstacles [10:14] Facing temptation head on [12:12] Setting goals [13:07] The correlation between accomplishing a goal and happiness [15:37] Tony’s journey: past and present [19:54] Taking on a new journey [23:17] Making changes in other areas [25:59] Don’t neglect the small dreams [28:04] The impact we have on others [30:39] The satisfaction we get from achieving our goals [34:38] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: http://aimeej21.com/episode18 Hear Tony’s previous episode! Many sellers understand the challenge of using emails to reach out to prospects, but Chad Sanderson tells us that using brief, compelling stories in sales emails can leave a memorable impression on a prospect who is inundated with noise. Chad has worked as a marketer, seller, sales leader, and entrepreneur, so he understands the perspective of everyone listening to this podcast. Email issues Chad points out that most emails suck. We're all connected to our devices and we're constantly inundated with impressions through Facebook messages, videos, emails, LinkedIn requests, and even WhatsApp or Snapchat messages. That doesn't even include impressions you get while watching television. The only way to effectively break through the noise is to put yourself in the other person's shoes. Everything is moving at a ridiculously fast pace, so if you never slow down enough to truly consider the other person, you'll probably fail to truly connect. You must connect with people in a way that's valuable from their perspective. [Tweet "People still buy from people, so if they don't know and trust you, you must build rapport before you earn the right to talk about yourself. #BuildRapport"] Onslaught As if the crowded inboxes aren't enough, it's also true that many of the emails people send are just drudgery. Chad points to one company that has been pursuing him for several months, and as he mapped the cadence of the messages, he noted that the messages never included anything from his perspective until about email 14. The messages were always about the company. He said it happens all the time because sellers don't realize that approach doesn't work. And though he tries to be kind because he works in this world too, he sometimes has to unsubscribe because the messages aren't valuable. To make the idea simpler to understand, think about this in the context of your friends. Everybody has at least one friend that will not stop talking about themselves. Even in a social setting, people will eventually move away from that person. It's true in sales, too. People business We seem to assume that the rules are different in sales. We forget that we're in the people business and that relationships matter in sales just as they do outside of work. Sales has always been a discipline. It has always been tough. It has gotten tougher because now everyone can get to everyone else and everyone believes they have something important to say. Slow down and take a deep breath. Think about your general target audience. Instead of thinking about Donald or Chad, think about reaching out to podcast hosts who focus on B2B revenue generation. Then you'll have a little bit of context. You still won't know those people, but you'll have a good place to start. But you have to be able to reach out to prospects at scale. Personalization Chad read a report last week about a company that ran a test of 7,000 emails, personalizing half of the emails to the challenges the person would face based upon their role. Think industry/company personalization rather than individual personalization. They found that the open rates were four to five points higher on cold emails that were crafted to highlight challenges the receiver was facing. Some people argue that isn't personalization, but what we really need to do is understand the conext these people are working in and then show them something that will tap into their curiosity circuit. The next level of personalization involves those who responded to the first round of communication.Instead of researching 100 people I only have to research the 10 who indicated interest in my product or service. Stick to the rule of thumb that you'll do 15 minutes of research on an industry, 10 minutes of research on a company, and 5 minutes of research on an individual. If you can stick to that and not be distracted by dog videos or Tiger winning the Masters, you'll be able to effectively personalize your messaging. Make them curious so that they'll be waiting for the next email. Telling stories Chad related the story of a friend who went into a Men's Warehouse to get a tux. Then he used the experience to reach out to the CEO of the company to highlight how his company could help fill in some of the organization's gaps. Using his own individual experience, he crafted an email that was still only six or seven sentences long so that it fit on a mobile screen. In a B2C environment, share how that brand made you feel or how an individual made you feel. In a B2B environment, tell a story about how you've helped someone whose situation was similar to the person you're targeting. Explain how you were able to help him turn his situation around and tell him about the results you were able to produce. Tell him about the person who is like him. Although you don't know him yet, you know someone who is like him, so tell him that story. If you want to understand story structure better, grab a copy of Creativity, Inc, a book about how Pixar creates stories for its movies. Be human Very few people can write an email the very first time that communicates well and fits neatly on one mobile screen. You'll likely need multiple drafts to get it right. Communicate to your audience that you're paying attention to them and what they are dealing with. Acknowledge awards they won and acknowledge articles you've read about that address a problem they might be having. Consider Barb Giamanco, who reached out to female chief marketing officers to recruit help with a project. She emailed each of them by acknowledging an award each had received. Then she asked for their perspective on a project she was working on. The emails indicated that she was paying attention to the CMOs' careers. It acknowledged a problem that the CMOs might be having and a desire to address it. It wasn't until the very end of the email that she even mentioned her own intentions. Be authentic and genuine. Realize, too, that once you get an email dialogue started, you have to have the skill set to keep it going. Think about your prospects as human beings. Slow down and think about your target. Smart sellers can make social media work for them by building a personal brand, giving value, connecting with others, and growing their business. Andy Storch is a consultant and coach who is always learning new things about sales and who loves the freedom that selling provides. Though he says he still has a lot to learn, he has an advantage over many others because he's always trying new things. Because he has the confidence to experiment and discover what works and what doesn't, he has a leg up on a lot of other people. Personal branding Whether you're selling services or products, there are very few things that absolutely distinguish your offerings from other people's. In fact, customers can always find an alternative. In B2B especially, they are buying you. They want to do business with you. Relationships are so important for sellers which is why it's more important than ever to develop a personal brand. You must let people know who you are and create authority. To that end, Andy uses social media to let people know who he is, to create authority, to share knowledge, and to build authority. Attracting people As sellers, we initially think we want to get on a call with everybody, but there are a lot of people we just won't gel with. Social media attracts people who want to work with us and deflects others. In an era where everyone is creating content of some kind, we have to put our own content out there in order to build our authority. Given the amount of content that already exists, it's tempting to wonder why yours matters. Even if you're regurgitating information you learned from someone else, put your own spin on it. For some, it's blogging. Others use podcasting or YouTube. It depends on your style and where your clients are. Andy points to podcaster Chris Ducker and his business Youpreneur. In his book Rise of the Youpreneur, Chris says that if you build a personal brand, it's the last brand business you'll ever need to build because you can take it with you and evolve it into any kind of business. Five years from now, you may do completely different work, but if you've built a brand and a following, people will go with you. Building a brand Your personal brand is what you're known for. Having your own website and your own colors is the advanced part of it. Are you known for being knowledgeable, trustworthy, and someone that people want to learn from? Andy posts on social media with the goal of helping his friends discover the things that have previously worked for him. They tell him that he inspires them, and he has created a personal brand as someone who is an achiever, who helps and inspires other people. You want to be known as someone knowledgeable and trustworthy at the end of the day. People who need it Think of your content as giving information to a friend. You are putting it out there for those people who need it and want it at that time, not for people who don't. Don't worry about the judgment from people that your content isn't for. Most people are rooting for you. Even if the content isn't for them, they'll just scroll on by. Action steps Andy's primary business is B2B so he spends most of his time on LinkedIn. When he moved to this business 18 months ago he committed to posting every weekday. Over time he has gained some traction there, though it's a tough platform to engage on. Until you have a really good following of people, it's tough to get likes and comments. Start by finding an engagement group where people are in a group together commenting on each other's stuff. Be careful with this, though, because if you join multiple groups it can be tough to keep up. If you find one, it will help you build your following and gain exposure. It doesn't directly turn into sales, but it keeps him top of mind for people. You don't know who's on there and who's seeing your content. Don't put content out just for the sake of doing so, but find ways to be valuable to the people who follow you. Don't assume you'll start generating sales right away. You're serving people, you're building a brand, and long-term it will work out for you. Logistics The best practice is to schedule content, but Andy calls himself a live-in-the-moment kind of guy who decides each day what to post. He alternates between providing content that targets his ideal clients and general content that would be helpful for larger numbers of people. His target clients are less than 10 percent of his overall network, so sometimes he wants to speak directly to them, but sometimes he wants to engage a larger group. Share experiences Think back to your own experiences and knowledge. Can you turn those into posts or stories that you can tell Would you rather write or speak? You've got to put it out there are hit publish. You won't get much response in the beginning but you've got to keep doing it. When you have a fear of judgment or criticism, it grows as you let it fester. The more you take action, just like with cold calling, you build more experience so it becomes less scary. Podcasting Andy has two podcasts: The Andy Storch Show and The Talent Development Hotseat. He uses the latter to land meetings with target clients who otherwise wouldn't meet with him, and it's working beautifully. Everyone loves to tell their own story and they love attention. Many people don't know how to do that because they aren't going to start their own podcasts. Andy gives them a way to share their stories and experiences. The same people who failed to accept sales meetings with Andy suddenly accepted the offer to appear on his podcast. He's working to develop personal relationships with these people. These people didn't see a compelling reason to interact with him before they discovered his platform. The added benefit is that he's growing his authority and building relationships. Serve don't sell Resist the temptation to include lots of calls-to-action and links. Provide value. They want to know that you're trustworthy and that you have interesting things to say. [Tweet "People don't pay for information anymore. They pay for execution, so give information away. Serve, don't sell. #ServeCustomers"] "Building a Personal Brand" episode resources You can connect with Andy at his website, www.andystorch.com, and on LinkedIn. Who doesn’t love a good story? Whether you’re reading, watching, or listening---you can be drawn in before you realize it. My guest today knows the power and magic of storytelling---and he’s sharing some of his secrets with us. Shannon Cason has told stories all over the country with The Moth, Snap Judgment, and his own podcasts, Homemade Stories, and The Trouble. He is the chief educator for the Brutally Honest Storytelling Workshop Series and has worked with several companies, including WBEZ, WDET, and Spotify. He is originally from Detroit, and he’s gracious enough to come on the show to share his knowledge and experience as a dream chaser. The magic of storytelling Can you feel it? I’m talking about the moment when you hear a story, and you know whether someone is “putting on a performance,” using a gimmick, or being honest and open. The first thing Shannon noticed about storytellers is that people are drawn to you when you’re authentic and are yourself, especially when polarizing issues are involved. People simply relate more to truth and real life, and we’re drawn to that in stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the story or the experience. That’s the magic of storytelling. TWEET: People are drawn to stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the experience. #chasingdreams Why podcasting? Have you ever had money that burned a hole in your pocket? Shannon’s first iPhone came as the result of a gambling windfall, and he started listening to podcasts. He had the great idea to mix his love of storytelling with developing his own podcast. He wasn’t satisfied to just “talk,” but wanted full-fledged productions with music and sound effects. Never thinking of this creative endeavor--or any artistic effort--as something that could sustain him financially, he realized that there would be no other job that would bring him as much fulfillment as telling stories and that he could make a living while sharing his stories and chasing his dreams. TWEET: No other job could bring as much fulfillment as telling stories and chasing his dreams. #chasingdreams Finding YOUR voice In storytelling or podcasting, how do you find YOUR voice? You may start out by following and imitating someone else, but Shannon says you have to evolve from that beginning and add your unique style. The beautiful part is when you figure things out and find YOUR voice. You can watch and learn from others, but then put the content through your own filter of truth and authenticity. Find something that isn’t what everyone else is doing. TWEET: You have to find your own voice. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Find an example of who you’d like to be and backtrack that example to see where they started. Seeing where they came from should inspire you.” See the behind-the-scenes interview with Shannon for more! www.aimeej21.com/youtube OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:10] How Shannon and I met in 2016 [1:25] What captured Shannon about storytelling [2:50] How storytelling is brutally honest and refreshing [6:58] Shannon’s storytelling aspirations [9:05] From storytelling to podcasting [11:20] Feeling financial pressures and fears [13:50] If people didn’t pursue their higher calling [17:00] Why we “trap” ourselves into living others’ lifestyles [21:19] “Outside the box” thinking [22:54] How Shannon put his own spin on his work [25:15] How his children are following in his footsteps [29:13] One surprising outcome [31:49] What’s coming up next for Shannon [33:16] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: www.aimeej21.com/episode187 www.aimeej21.com/donate Consider donating to help the show! www.shannoncason.com Find out more about Shannon and Brutally Honest Storytelling
What have you had to overcome to chase your dreams? Today’s guest overcame severe anxiety, explored what he wanted to accomplish in his life, and found the support to make it happen. His journey wasn’t an easy one, but it’s been fulfilling and rewarding, and----the best is yet to come! He’s here as part of our celebration of June as Pride Month, and I’m beyond excited to share his inspiring story with you. Juel D. Lane is an American dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, and one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.” Most recently, Juel was a featured dancer in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert, which starred John Legend, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Sara Bareilles. From October 2017 through March 2018, Alvin Alley American Dance Theater’s second company, Alley II, toured Juel’s piece, “Touch and Agree” around the world. Currently dancing with Bessie Award-winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Juel D. Lane’s dance films, Just Another Day, How to Kill A Ghost, and When the Beat Drops, showcase this multi-talented choreographer’s dynamism. Find what drives you How does a kid get through anxiety? For young Juel, he was anxious, nervous, and didn’t know WHO he really was. It was his involvement in the arts that broke the hold of anxiety in his life. He says when you figure out what really drives you, then the anxiety evaporates. It was his high school years that revealed his love for the arts and set the path that his storied career would take. With unwavering support from his parents, he found that being on the stage and performing began to “feel like home.” TWEET: Figure out what really drives you and the anxiety will evaporate. @jueldlane #chasingdreams Where the inspiration comes from Can you be real and raw? Juel takes seriously his responsibility to create choreography that “strips labels and shows humanity.” His sources of inspiration bring the rawness and authenticity to his work. He explains that his work, How to Kill a Ghost, came out of a doomed relationship that he was reluctant to let go of. He used the dance as therapy for the healing that needed to take place. Juel produces “honest choreography that comes from an honest state.” He knows that people are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” TWEET: People are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” @jueldlane #chasingdreams Fighting the fear How do you handle fear in your life? Juel says that he takes fear by the hand and says, “Not today!” When you find your zone and can stay there, then everything else goes away. Juel knows that amazing feeling when the lights dim and the curtains go up and he’s proud to have been a part of such monumental experiences in his career. The success is what pushes him to work hard and want more. When you push yourself, it gives you inspiration to lead into the next project. Juel shares how important it is to do things that scare you and help you conquer your fear. How would you define “abuse”? Unfortunately, such a stigma exists around the idea of abuse, how it occurs, and what it entails, that people are afraid to even talk about it. The truth is that many people have some sort of abuse either in their past or in their present. This conversation is another way to honor and recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. I’m thrilled to bring you another expert, who has amazing things to teach us today! Abigail Manning is creating awareness on authentic health, which prevents and ends ALL forms of abuse. She has done five years of research on abuse and is an Indiana University Communications double major in cognitive, social, and behavioral theories. Combining her academic background with her personal experience with childhood abuse and domestic violence, she provides unique and transformative workshops and speeches that truly empower others. The Mental Health Stigma Do you know someone who suffers from mental illness? As more and more people are affected by backgrounds of abuse and depression, we must realize that ANYONE can suffer from mental illness. Common responses might be, “It doesn’t happen in MY family; it doesn’t happen to strong people; it doesn’t happen to smart people.” Mental health is simply a topic that we don’t talk about. Abigail’s focus is on “authentic health.” Depression can be a product of past abuse and can be linked to other things. Whatever the circumstance, it takes ownership to work past the struggles. Abigail tells us why the words we use really matter in getting the help we need and deserve. TWEET: People choose #addictions to mask their feelings and sometimes see suicide as the only way out. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams Helpful Words What are the words that a struggling person needs to hear? How about “I believe you and I care about you. Let’s get you some qualified help.” Abigail’s advice is to find a trusted person and don’t let yourself become isolated. Use language that feels comfortable to you and don’t be afraid to ask for help and resources. It’s hard to look someone in the eye and reveal that you’re struggling with mental health. Find phone resources that can help. Abigail’s workshops are designed to help any group navigate through all forms of abuse and build a pathway to authentic health. Perpetrators want nothing more than to take your power and control. If you are strong, then no one can take that from you. TWEET: The #1 thing an abuser or perpetrator wants to take from you is CONTROL. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams How to Look for Bullying Behavior Have you seen bullying behavior on social media? It’s all around us in different forms. Abigail has a “purple threads” theory, showing how bullying behavior gets reinforced, either positively or negatively. She teaches people verbal skills so they don’t have to hide. Most people aren’t even aware of what abuse really is, and even though it is complicated, it’s easy to spot if you simplify the definition. Look for a repeated cycle of any psychological, verbal, physical, sexual, or financial abuse. It takes work to strengthen yourself and become aware of abusive behavior, but Abigail can teach you how to spot the red flags in any relationship. TWEET: Don’t go it alone. “I got this idea, but I don't know if it will make me money.” Does that sound like a familiar statement? Have you ever come up with an online business idea, but thought “Nobody would ever pay for that!” Well, don't dismiss your idea so quickly because the internet is an amazing thing. The internet changes everything and you could make thousands of dollars on almost anything you could think of selling if you just take action! Yes, you've heard of so many business coaches, life coaches, social media coaches, and similar types making money online… well, today we have something different, and you're in for a treat! In our Flip Your Life community, we have a lot of different people with different niches, but this one is one of our favorites! Today's guest is Teresa Perleberg. Her online business? How about “Shearing sheep and turning their wool into a statue!” Okay, that may be oversimplifying it, but it just gets better! Teresa lives on a North Dakota farm with her husband and 4 kids, 93 sheep, 50 cattle. Her husband had worked multiple jobs to provide for their family, she wanted to help out while still being able to stay homeschooling the kids. It turns out that her discovery of an amazing craft (that utilized her sheep wool) would be the solution to this. She does something really awesome called needle felting. You'll have to listen in to hear Teresa explain what that is in detail, but we absolutely love it! She started selling her needle felted art on Etsy in 2008, then transitioned into making needle felting kits and selling them. And because her audience had shown so much interest in taking their needle felting to the next level by learning more techniques, Teresa had started a membership business on Needle Felting. Her online business has grown to have a stable income which was enough for her husband to quit his night shift job and have more time with the family! Now her husband and the kids all help out on her online business, working together as a family. That's Flippin' your life, y'all! Join us as we help Teresa on her membership retention strategies, audience engagement, overcoming technical problems, and growing her membership. Anytime we can talk about shearing sheep in a podcast is always a good day! River Castelonia currently studies mechanical engineering at Manhattan College, specializing in solid modeling and mechanical design. After working on Nobel Prize-winning research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he began his undergraduate work in engineering. During his first academic year at Manhattan College, he began working for Tesla Motors Inc. in their sales division to develop skills in both marketing and business. Combining his technical and business background, he helped co-found Haven Labs, a non-profit that designs 3D printed prosthetics for amputees in the NY area. River’s Second Chance: Is there a better fit for me? Perhaps you have asked yourself this question, as River did while still a young college student. He was studying physics but having a rough time when he received a “wake-up call” that drove him to transfer to Manhattan College, change is major and life plans, and begin working on himself and his dreams. TWEET: “People do what they’re good at, and not what they necessarily like to do.” @rivercastelonia Your Environment is KEY: Who do you surround yourself with? It’s very important to get the help and support that you need in pursuing your dreams—people who believe in you! We are each responsible for finding the support we need to fulfill what we want out of life. No one else will do it for you. TWEET: “If you want to go fast, go alone. TWEET: “Everything is an #investment, even time.” @rivercastelonia Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“It’s important to know that those thoughts that you have about a certain idea are the ones we sometimes talk ourselves out of. Lucinda Cross is a best-selling author, internationally-renowned speaker, master coach, platform strategist, TEDx speaker, and founder of the Activate Movement. She’s been featured on the Today Show, in the NY Times, Essence magazine, and many more media outlets. I heard about Lucinda when she was a guest on Episode 47 of the Trailblazers podcast with my friend Stephen Hart. I wanted her on the show after that episode, but when I looked her up and learned her story, I KNEW I had to do anything and everything to make it happen Thankfully, Lucinda said yes after my first ask and she’s here today! TWEET: “I had to go even harder after my #dreams because society had already cancelled me out.” #LucindaCross Defy the Odds What do you do when circumstances DON’T go your way? Are you tempted to give up and quit? Lucinda shares how a bad choice in college led to her incarceration and how she had to serve her time—for almost five years! Even though prison took a chunk of her journey, she didn’t let it stop her. She came back stronger than ever and more determined than ever to go even harder after her dreams. TWEET: “I tried to speed up success and it didn’t go my way.” #LucindaCross The Fab Five +1 Do you enjoy the journey in chasing YOUR dreams? Lucinda learned from her mom the value of a vision board, and it’s a technique she still uses today. Her “fab five + 1” are faith, family, friends, finances, fitness, and fun—these are represented on her vision board at all times. Her motto is “No one will outwork me on my own dream!” TWEET: “It’s not what you see, but who you’re becoming.” #LucindaCross The “WE nation” Do you look to lift others up and give support when they need it? This attitude is a big part of Lucinda’s message. She calls it “promoting a WE nation in a ME world.” There is power when we support each other and build a team. People are drawn to the bigger vision. You are never attractive when you are out for yourself! Lauren Puryear is a 29-year old mental health clinician and proud mother of Isaiah. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union University, two Master’s degrees, AND a PhD in Psychology. Lauren prides herself in giving back to her community. She is an activist, philanthropist, and an advocate for social issues across the world. Being raised in Paterson, NJ has taught Lauren the importance of giving back to her community. She started a charity organization, For the Love of Others, LLC, that helps those in need, and it’s all in honor of her grandmother, Marion Elizabeth Smith. After beating cancer twice, Lauren’s resilience and strength has been incredible! Her goal is to share her story with the world in hopes to not only raise awareness, but also to inspire! TWEET: “Focusing on the #dreams that really matter and making the world a better place on Ep 101” @FTLOO_inc Chasing the Dream: When you first had your dream, did you know exactly how you would accomplish it? Most people don’t have it all figured out in the beginning, because it takes time for the growth process to occur. For Lauren, she knew her dream was to help the homeless and hungry, but she had no idea how she could help. Since she is a woman of strong faith, she prayed for help----and soon had her answer: extreme couponing. It’s true that where there’s a will, there really is a way. Lauren was able to feed the first 30,000 people with just $500—thanks to her couponing. TWEET: “Living as #homeless person for a week on the streets of DC opened my eyes.” @FTLOO_inc Seeing the Bigger Picture: Why care about hungry people? If you asked Lauren this question, she would tell you that her organization provides MUCH more than just food for empty bellies, but gives hope and positive mental health. Feeding people can prevent crime and drug addiction. It’s all about looking at the bigger picture from something small and easy like clipping coupons. We all need a dose of Lauren’s passion and positivity toward helping those around us! TWEET: “If something as small as #couponing can have such an impact, then why not do it?” @FTLOO_inc Raising Awareness: What can ONE person do in the fight against hunger? Lauren has inspired countless others to join her in chasing her dream of feeding 60,000 people in the first year of her charity. There are so many ways to help, but Lauren wants us all to know that hunger and homelessness are NOT the same. For the Love of Others feeds people at schools, community centers, and emergency shelters, and many more could be fed if laws in the US would change regarding getting food to the hungry. Lauren is a true example of someone who lives out her mantra: “Love God, love others, and serve the world.” TWEET: “People don’t usually realize how many #hungry people there are all around us.” @FTLOO_inc Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“If I can do it at 29 years of age, then anyone can. Whatever your dream is, GO FOR IT! It’s Episode 100 and my guest is Dr. Freeman Hrabowski. Since 1992, he has been the president of MY university, UMBC (the University of Maryland, Baltimore County). He is a consultant on science and math education to national agencies, universities, and school systems. He was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME in 2012. With philanthropist Robert Meyerhoff, he co-founded the Meyerhoff Scholars Program in 1988, which is open to all high-achieving students committed to pursuing advanced degrees and research careers in science and engineering, and advancing underrepresented minorities in these fields. He is a much sought-after speaker, a busy man, a mentor, a friend, and I am blessed to have him as a guest for this 100th episode. Thanks, Doc, for coming on the show! God’s Minute, by Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays: “I have just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can’t refuse it; didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it, but it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, give an account if I abuse it. Just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.” GRIT is the Word: Do I want to be excellent? How do I go about doing it? Each person makes decisions every day that affect the path they take. We all have chances and choices that determine our destiny. To be excellent, it takes a strong sense of self, grit, and hard work. Many young people today don’t understand what it means to have passion, resilience, and to never give up. TWEET: “Choice, not chance, determines your #destiny. What will you choose? #Dreams and #values.” High Expectations: What do you do when obstacles come? Dr. Hrabowski explains the importance of teaching students how to learn and how to succeed, but it can’t stop there. We have to teach them how to fail. We all get knocked down by life and we have to know how to deal with those experiences. The worst thing is NOT to fail, but to fail to strive to be better than you thought possible. He shares his love for innovation in education in going against tradition. TWEET: Every person needs to develop a strong sense of self that says, “I can do this.” Be a Champion: What does it mean to be a champion for someone? It goes beyond mere mentorship, but includes giving back by being an example. Every student needs a champion, an advocate, and we need to give opportunities to shine for people of ALL backgrounds, not just people who are just like us. Part of the challenge is how to groom champions of all backgrounds, who will be those advocates for young students. TWEET: :”Attitude, #passion, and #grit are the things that will make a difference.” Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Ask the question of yourself, ‘What am I learning that’s different?’ Take the time to identify people you admire and hear their stories. Stories enlighten and inspire.” Dreams by Langston Hughes (1926) Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Need ideas on how to build your membership into an engaging community? Listen in as we discuss strategies on membership community to help our guest for today. On the Flipped Lifestyle podcast this week, we have the online entrepreneur behind ECHE Music, Simone Henry. Having been born to a family passionate about music, Simone grew up loving every aspect of it and used to sing in their church with her sisters. She was also fascinated with business and the internet, and went on to college and got a degree in Information Systems from business school. The Christian Jukebox was a wondrous blend of her many passions. She had gotten the idea after her sister emailed from Spain asking for help to find a recording of a song for the accompanying musicians to play during her performance. Simone did what any devoted sister would do, she scoured the internet but couldn't find a quality recording. She thought "there ought to be a place on the internet where I can get quality Christian music,” and thus, The Christian Jukebox was born! This was simply the beginning. She later relinquished The Christian Jukebox and had launched ECHE Music in 2013. Her latest venture intends to bring together indie Christian artists, helping them learn about the music industry so that they can better spread their positive message to the world as well as sustain their lives and ministries. Simone is determined to turn her current membership layout into an indie artist's nest. Her question now is, how does one create an engaging membership community? My son, Cody, and I went on our very first official Boy Scout camping trip last weekend. After waffling for a few months, he decided early this year that he wants to become an Eagle Scout, so it's onward from Cub Scouts for us. This is a whole new ballgame and I think it's going to be really good for him. I got to make a big deal of getting him his first very own solo tent (a rite of passage in our family) and the boys planned, cooked and cleaned up all their meals, fished, hiked, learned how to swing an ax and generally had a great time. And for me, it was really, really good to get 48 hours outdoors, even with the chaos of 20 some boys around. While I loved getting the outdoors time and it was fun to hike, cook with the adults and watch my son wield a very sharp implement over his head, I think what really strikes me most about the weekend is the extraordinary effort of volunteer leadership. I watched two men pour time, energy, effort, care and patience into my son and the other boys all weekend. Their own sons were there, but they were generally taking time away from their families to instill skills, values and offer experiences to my son that he probably would not have otherwise. In the group of 8 boys that just came into the troop, there are a few challenging kids and while the scoutmasters require explicit standards of behavior, attention and safety, they were also remarkably patient, kind and encouraging to the new boys. Days later, I'm still awed by their care and effort on behalf of my son and the others. They meet with the scouts three Mondays a month and with an oversight committee on the fourth Monday. They camp one weekend a month as a troop, do a week of summer camp with the kids and have other events and trips throughout the year. That's a lot of time invested. And I believe that it's one of the most important things you can do with your time. I talked a lot about my Destination Imagination coaching experience over the last month or so. I've poured a ton of time into those seven kids since last Christmas, and it's one of the most valuable things I've done this year. Certainly not the easiest or least frustrating, but definitely one of the most valuable. When I think back over the first quarter of this year and how I've spent my time (see that? That's part of the personal review I said I'd do! Look at me actually doing my goals! Yay me!), the most valuable hours have been spent contributing to the lives of other people. My family, the DI team, volunteering at my church and my local food bank. A lot of other things have been fun and worthwhile, but the time spent investing in other people, that's the time that really means something. Those are the moments that make a lasting difference, because people are an eternal investment. [Tweet "People are an eternal investment."] How much do you invest in people? In your family? Family is a tricky one because our families automatically take up a lot of our time. But are you really present? Are you intentional? Do you invest time in friends? Strangers? Community members? Neighbors? Children? There are countless options to be investing in others...Boy Scouts and DI teams are two of thousands of ways. And It doesn't need to be that emotionally or time intensive either. What does it look like for you? When we talk about people, there are no investments too small. There's an anonymous quote that says, "Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts." I remember being a young stepmom in the 1990's. My husband's 7 year old and 12 year old boys moved in with us on my 25th birthday. These were not easy kids. There were a lot of tough situations. I remember saying often that I skipped the easy stuff like diapers and sleepless nights and went straight to puberty and sleepless nights! There was one Mother's Day that was particularly difficult. No one in the family wished me Happy Mother's Day. Despite wishing their Grandmother and their mom a good holiday in front of me, I got not a bit of recognition all day long. That was hurtful, but I was also really grieved that they weren't experiencing and expressing gratitude. They lived with me. I was their functional mom for most of the time. As the day went on, I got more upset. At some point in the late afternoon I sat down and really thought about why I was angry. When I processed it, I realized that my motivations were way off. It really didn't matter if they recognized my efforts. I didn't need the recognition. I was pouring into them because it was the right thing to do, because I cared for them and because it was a service I was meant to perform. I wasn't doing it for a pat on the back. Yes, they absolutely should have said thank you. But, my attitude was and is completely independent of their response. That realization was a big deal for me, it shifted my serving them from being a trade to being a gift. [Tweet "Serving others is a gift, not a trade."] Erin Davis, from the Lies Young Women Believe blog says service is finding practical ways to show other people they matter. It's like saying, “Hey! You're important, and I want to prove it to you.” But, she also says this: That's something that sounds great in theory, but isn't always so appealing in real time. True service requires sacrifice. We must sacrifice our abilities for the good of others, not just ourselves. We must sacrifice our talents to invest in others, not just to make ourselves look good. We must sacrifice our time, something that is always in short supply. And here's the kicker: to truly serve...we must do it with zero promise of a personal pay off. There's no guarantee that the people we serve will return the favor or even notice our efforts. We are called to serve others anyway. Episode Artwork The cover art this week is about intersecting relationships, about taking our patchwork hearts and interacting with others in associations of all kinds. Some connections are glancing and some deep, but no matter how deep the connections go, serving others and being in relationship changes us as much as it affects those we give to. Henry Drummond said, "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." What if you invest in people? How would your life be different? In an article about volunteering on Huffington Post, Kathy Gottberg says, "it is practically impossible to create a happy, meaningful and rewarding life without being of service to others in some way." Cheryl Tan knows the power of stories in connecting people. She’s been a broadcast journalist in GA and VA, with 20+ years in the TV news business. After blending her talents with her entrepreneurial drive, she now shares interviewing and storytelling skills with business owners who want to use video or media to tell the stories of their companies. Cheryl knows how to help entrepreneurs be seen as experts in their fields and helps them connect with clients and customers through video and public relations. TWEET: “Learn to share your story while you build your #Authority!” @CherylTan Life’s Changing Journey We all know that we don’t always end up doing what we “think” we will. There is value in being willing to change your path and find your voice. This is what Cheryl had to do to end up in the field of broadcast journalism. She shares how she learned from others and learned about connecting with people through stories. The key elements are listening and being curious. Even though her path didn’t lead where she expected, Cheryl found a way to blend her innate curiosity, her love for writing, and her passion for literature into a “news job.” TWEET: “Your WHY will come out quite naturally when you share what you do.” @CherylTan Testing the Waters Do you know the feeling of leaping into something new? Cheryl describes her personal experience as “dipping her toe” into a new path. She began asking business associates if they needed help with newsletters or media and was surprised when her offers were well-received. Soon enough, she was able to pick a date at which she would go “all in.” That was over two years ago—a time period fraught with journeys, pivots, and changes. What is the secret to making it work? Cheryl says that you need the courage to leave all you’ve ever known and have faith in yourself. She shares how she now serves people in a different way and empowers them to tell their stories. TWEET: “People are more open to you when you start by offering help.” @CherylTan Asking for Help Do you ask for help when you need it? Most of us don’t. Cheryl had to look for people who knew “a thousand times more” than she did and tap into their expertise. If you look, you will find them—those who had left something behind to look for something else. Cheryl warns that these “helpers” don’t have to have the same exact situation as you do to be helpful. The passion to help others is the common factor. TWEET: “It’s more than OK to ask for help.” @CherylTan GUEST RECOMMENDATION: “Take action. Do ONE thing to move you forward. Most people know what that is, even if it’s scary; they just need to do it.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:50] How Aimee met Cheryl [2:25] Finding your voice [5:50] Why Cheryl took the path to broadcast journalism [8:52] Behind the scenes in news making [10:44] Cheryl’s 20-year career in TV news [14:00] Testing the waters and taking the leap [18:18] Being self-aware and listening to your gut [19:08] Always learning and adapting [21:16] Seeking help when you need it [24:40] No limits: Keep going [25:26] Common lessons in changing careers [27:25] The WHY---and how to find it [33:00] How Cheryl offers help to others [35:35] How connections have helped [39:20] Cheryl’s ONE action for dream chasers to take RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Cheryl on Facebook Cheryl on Twitter Cheryl’s Website TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: “A genuine #connection doesn’t have to be a constant connection.” @cheryltan TWEET: “I’m a good interviewer because I “just have to know about people.” @cheryltan TWEET: “Your #path knows where to take you.” @cheryltan
Our guest this week is the founder of Fabulously Driven Me, Flip Your Life community member, Dr. Yanina Gomez. Dr. Gomez is a mother of 2 amazing children and wife to an Art enthusiast. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology back in 2009. She used to work a nine-to-five, but wanted to have the freedom to be there for her family, reach out and help more people gain clarity and confidence -- you know, live her life to the fullest. She co-founded Art NXT Level with her husband, and worked as a gallerist at 33 Contemporary Gallery, that has been running for over 10 years in Chicago. This was her husband's thing though, and so she founded her own membership community, Fabulously Driven Me. This is where she channels her passion to coach women entrepreneurs and create a mindset where it is possible to achieve the results they deserve. Yanina's community is still in the early development stages and we will be here to help her with strategies to grow it exponentially. Join us on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast and learn what this episode can do to help YOU too. You Will Learn: Ways to increase your membership. How to make your community accessible. Today we are with community life member, Christina who was previously a lawyer and is now an organizing and decluttering coach. She helps people cut out the clutter, and get organized so they are making more money. A recent study says that people lose an average of 55 mins a day (or 6 weeks of work) a year due to being cluttered and disorganized. She has made money by selling printable PDFs on Etsy and working with people in person. Christina has decided to change her lifestyle by making organizing and decluttering courses for individuals online. We discuss how every opportunity in your business doesn't mean it is the best one. Sometimes even in business, you have to let go of things so you can see larger gain and progress with something else. We strategize with Christina ways in which she can use her product to start promoting and selling the 100 page ebook she has already created. After narrowing down her target avatar, Christina is going to maximize the Flip Your Life Community by asking other members (who are also entrepreneurs) how they would want the content to be delivered. [Tweet "People are usually more willing to invest in their business than themselves"] You will learn Why it's not smart to have two different target audiences online. Consistent messaging to your target audience. Don't put a lot of time into your tagline or website domain. Ideal Balance between product creation and promotion. Go ask your target audience what they want rather than speculating. Don't speculate what people want, you have to go ask them. Membership sites are the best online business choice for predictable and recurring income. Listen in on today's episode to learn how to build and grow your own! Today we are talking about how to set up a membership site and the tools you need to know about so you can successfully make money online. Exciting News! Jeanette, a member of our FYL Community (and on FL55), messaged us recently sharing how she was making enough money with her WordPress membership site to quit her job! We'll cover all the tools you need to host your community. A forum is one of the core pieces that really isn't a complex plugin but gives you a lot of ability and flexibility to organize the conversations, resources and training your members will have access to. With a forum on your website (not a Facebook page or group) the content is under your control not under the control of Facebook. We'll go over some ways to protect your forum, allow people to pay you and how to manage your forum threads and conversations. Don't promise new daily, weekly, or monthly content, simply say there will be Regularly Scheduled Content. (this is critical!) [Tweet "People quit memberships because they stop getting value"] Two critical factors for member retention are community and accessibility to the Expert (you). Beware of the red jeep rule. (Do a quick patent search) Document your idea. Use photos, notes, emails to trusted people or even to yourself. Common sense stuff. In this episode I had the chance to chat with Kari Jobe about: The process of bringing together so many worship leaders and musicians. The story behind the song "Forever" on her new album. Her definition of worship. How she prepares spiritually before leading worship. The value of having your team members lead devotionals The latest book that's she's reading: Hosting the Presence: Unveiling Heaven's Agenda Her warm up routine, she mentions using exercises from vocalcoach.com How she cools down and rests her voice. She mentions using: Traditional Medicinals Organic Throat How she knows when it's time to rest her voice. A question she often gets is how to foster spontaneous worship. She gives us a great way to work with our congregations in this area. The value of spontaneous worship and leaving margin in the service for people to worship. The influence Charlie Hall had on her in her growth as leading with margin. The value of Matt Redman's book: The Unquenchable Worshipper: Coming Back to the Heart of Worship (Worship Series) Here are some great quotes from the interview: [Tweet "Our resurrected King has rendered you defeated @karijobe"] [Tweet "People are hungry for an encounter of God more now than I've ever seen @karijobe"] [Tweet "I think it's dangerous to lead worship by only the response of the people. @karijobe"] [Tweet "It's a precious thing to lead people in worship @karijobe"] I then had a great convo with my friend Brian Campbell who has recently launched a kickstarter to fund 3 EP's this year. We talk about: Counting the cost of doing ministry (parable reference here). The heart behind writing three EP's this year. The process behind one of the EP's that will be in French. We're also partnering with one of our contributors, Rob Carona, of Songsmith Creative to offer a free songwriting webinar this week. Be sure to sign up and join us for a great conversation!
#143: What happens to my credit score after paying off debt? In this episode I share survey results that show debt-free people aren't worried about their credit score. FICO says what's in your credit score FICO says your credit score is based on the length of credit, new debt, the variety of debts, how much debt you owe, and your payment history on debts. In short, you need to borrow money for a long time. More than likely you will end up paying interest. I'd rather be paid interest than paying it. What is not included in your credit score What is not included in a credit score is your age, sex, religion, and where you live. These things are left out due to consumer protection laws that were passed to keep lenders from being biased or discriminatory. The problem with a traditional credit score is that it is selective on what to include in the calculation of your credit score and is not a fair representation of your full financial picture. Why wouldn't these things be included when calculating your ability to repay a loan? How long you have been with your current employer How much you make How much you having in savings How much you have in assets that you own Your payment history on non-debt items like rent, cell phone, or your cable bill FICO is not supposed to factor those things in but those who promote "building your credit score" make it sound as if the credit score is the most important thing you should concentrate on. I disagree. It is a distraction. Results from my debt free survey I asked individuals to respond to a quick 8 question survey: Of the 83 Respondents 66 Married (80%) 1 Widowed 6 Divorced 10 never married 100% have been approved for a credit card. No surprise there. 11 of 83 respondents (13%) never taken out a car loan. 77% (64 respondents) say they do not have any outstanding consumer debt, 26 are completely debt free. Of the 26 completely debt free respondents, 9 stated their debt free date was over 5 years ago. All of them had a score greater than 700 except for 1 who said his score was ZERO. Only 2 of the 83 respondents who have paid off all their consumer debt indicated their score was 699 or less. Are they worried about their credit score? 8 of the 9 replied “No” to being concerned about their credit score and two of them actually responded with “Not At All” concerned. Only one was concerned about his Property and Casualty insurance rate being effected by a non-existent score. As I explain in the podcast recording, this really shouldn't be a reason to stay in debt or build your credit score. [Tweet "People who get out of debt do not care about their credit scores"] Why should they? They don't need a score to tell them they are winning with money. Other credit score promoted excuses: I need a score to rent an apartment: Devin Czech asked landlords if he could rent from them even though he doesn't have a credit score or credit history. The responses are very encouraging: Employers look at credit scores: An employer can pull your credit history before offering you a position in their company. However, if they use your SCORE as a determining factor then I would question their hiring practices. I would further go to say any employer who does not hire someone simply because they don't have a credit history is not a very good employer. Yes, bad credit is an indication of past financial problems but having no credit history is an indication that you've stayed out of debt and are financially responsible. Who wouldn't want to hire you? The bottom line? Losing your credit score is a good thing Your score will drop or disappear when you pay off debt. The everyday American is the lowest common denominator when it comes to knowledge about credit scores - and they are the target as well. For more information, visit the show notes at
