Ep. 229: Veronica Grant - The Inner Work To Find Love

Most people long for love. Some are successful in the search, and others feel that true love is just not in the cards for them. The truth is that you have to love yourself before you can love someone else and be loved in a fulfilling way. If that sounds too abstract to comprehend, then join us for today’s show--and learn what you can do to bring more love into your life.  Veronica Grant is a love coach for successful women who feel like they have it all except love, and she helps them find it. Through her binge-worthy podcast, free workshops, and coaching, Veronica is committed to shaking up how you find love, even in our “swipe right, swipe left” world. Some of her guilty pleasures (a must-have for recovering perfectionists!) include binge-watching HGTV, hiking with her husband and pup, and sushi everything. Join us to meet Veronica and clear what's blocking you in love! Making a pivot Have you felt the nudge to make a big change in your life? Veronica looks back to her time as a paid staffer on the Obama campaign in 2012. Her work consumed every moment of her life and turned her into a monster. She realized later, as she worked herself to misery in a job in DC, that she could not allow herself to stay in that world any longer. Looking back, she sees that these experiences led to the turning point that spurred her to other things, like starting her own business. Too many people let guilt convince them to stay in a miserable situation much longer than they should, and they use every excuse to justify their misery. Veronica realizes the big pivot she made was necessary to regain her sanity and wellbeing.  TWEET: Don’t let guilt convince you to stay in a miserable situation longer than you should. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Why a Love Coach? Does someone really need a love coach? While Veronica’s work IS about dating and finding that special someone, it really isn’t. Her work is all about the personal development and self-love of her client. She is more concerned about how someone treats themselves when they are frustrated, rejected, sad, and lonely. Those feelings are part of life’s path, but they shouldn’t factor into how you perceive your lovability and what you deserve in life. While she can’t prevent the inevitable heartbreaks for her clients, she doesn’t want that experience to change the story they tell themselves about their self-worth.  TWEET: Heartbreak doesn’t have to change the story you tell yourself about your self-worth. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Your inner child and your self-worth What was your inner child taught about love? Self-worth is tied to what we have been conditioned to believe about how and why we are loved. Most girls are conditioned with clear messaging that they will be more successful in love if they are skinny and attractive. We all want love, safety, and belonging, so we listen to the messages from the adults in our lives, especially those that tie body image to love and happiness. The little girl in you has to be reparented in the subconscious to heal that wound. Old beliefs have to be reprogrammed, and we have to be gentle around our thoughts to create a more positive headspace. Practice will create habit change.  TWEET: We have to be gentle around our thoughts to create a more positive headspace. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”No technique or tool will help you see change if you still beat yourself up. In these challenging times, gratitude has become more important than ever. A gratitude practice is one tool that is free of charge and equally accessible to people of all races, genders, ethnicities, and economic status. Gratitude has the ability to bring positivity to any situation and give your mindset an instant boost! Geoffrey Blake (GB) describes himself as a grateful human. He’s an introvert who plays an extrovert when it's necessary. He's toured internationally with his band, co-founded a non-profit, been a successful personal trainer for over a decade, and now his main focus is a global movement toward gratitude as the founder of the Global Gratitude Jar. The great connector Why focus on gratitude? GB had an unshakeable feeling early in his life that he would be part of the positive change in the world. The change happens when we see the good in ourselves, the good in others, and how much alike we really are. Geoffrey views a gratitude practice as an entry-level activity to bring about change and connect people--and anyone can participate. He sees himself as an encourager to help people form and establish a habit every day that can contribute to positivity and overall mental health.  TWEET:  Change happens when we see the good in ourselves. @GBGeoffreyBlake #chasingdreams Try JOLT Where do we start with a gratitude practice? GB says to start with a warm memory from the past, which is easy to find, even if your “gratitude muscle” isn’t developed enough to sense what you’re grateful for in the present. The key is JOLT: “Just one little thing.” Find one small thing to be grateful for every day, and you’ll grow into a more detailed gratitude practice. GB uses simplistic prompts to get people to think about the miracles in everyday life. Nothing is too small or insignificant for which to be grateful. He points out that in his Facebook group, someone’s gratitude is not up for judgment or comment; they are allowed to own it in whatever way they choose.  TWEET: Find one small thing to be grateful for every day, and you’ll grow into a more detailed gratitude practice. @GBGeoffreyBlake #chasingdreams You hold the power How does your positivity affect others? GB says that gratitude has a domino effect as it tips in the direction of sunshine. A simple smile, comment, or show of appreciation has immense power to change someone’s day and bring sunshine. Gratitude helps you bring positivity and your best to every situation, even the difficult ones. We hold the power to change someone’s day and make a positive impression just by looking for opportunities for connection. He explains how he looks to tell his mentors how they have impacted his success, and now he passes that encouragement along to those he mentors.  TWEET: Gratitude has a domino effect as it tips in the direction of sunshine. @GBGeoffreyBlake #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Commit to 30 days of gratitude with the JOLT method. If you’re stuck in a place without passion and purpose in life, then today’s show is for you. You might not think that someone can pivot from being an actress to a lawyer to the sweet world of baked goods, but today’s guest proves that it is possible! It’s never too late to chase your dreams and create the happiness you deserve! Jessie Sheehan is a cookbook author, food writer, recipe developer, and baker. She is the author of The Vintage Baker, (2018, Chronicle Books), which was named one of the Washington Post’s best cookbooks of 2018 and is beloved by Oprah, Nigella Lawson, Gail Simmons, and more. Jessie is also the co-author of Icebox Cakes (2015, Chronicle Books). The thing that drew Jessie in How many people start out in one profession before finding their niche in something completely different? It happens more often than you might think. Baking was the thing that drew Jessie in after she explored other unrelated professions. She grew up in a “foodie” family that loved experimenting with delicious foods, and there was a great reverence for sweets. As a new mom baking at home, she found that it was something she loved, even though she had no formal training. Getting a job at a bakery put Jessie doing menial tasks like bagging granola, and then her superiors saw that she was in it for the long haul. A journey of learning from others and growing her knowledge and skillset gave her the opportunity to progress to other duties, and she proved herself by being a hard worker and a fast learner.  TWEET: Learning from others and growing your skillset brings new opportunities. @jessiesheehanbakes #chasingdreams Finding what she was supposed to do Do you look back on your journey with regret? Jessie looks back and sometimes wishes that she had just started out by going to pastry school instead of pursuing other passions like being an actress and a lawyer. Her training process happened on the job at the bakery, and she knows there are gaps in her knowledge that pastry school would have filled. She also realizes that if she hadn’t taken the long journey to discover her passion for baking, then she might not have the same appreciation for what she is accomplishing each day.  TWEET: Don’t look back on your journey with regret. @jessiesheehanbakes #chasingdreams The balance between accomplishments and goals How do you find a balance between the accomplishments of the past and the goals of the future? As Jessie contemplates the trajectory of her career, she’s pleased and grateful for what she’s accomplished and the cookbooks she’s helped create, but she still wants to do more. In enjoying the moment and feeling pride in accomplishments, there is a balance with looking toward the future and wondering what wonderful things might be around the corner. Way back when, Jessie was a young mom looking for an interesting job to fill a few hours away from her home and her kids, so she began packing and sealing bags of granola at the bakery. Now she develops recipes, writes cookbooks, and makes national media appearances with her baking skills.  TWEET: Find balance between past accomplishments and future goals. @jessiesheehanbakes #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Hustle, hustle, hustle. No one has a perfect life. We each have negative experiences from our past that have helped shape the person we are today. There is a difference, however, in how we respond to those tough challenges. Some people allow those circumstances to define them, and they can never seem to move past them. Others are able to change their perspective and use difficulties to strengthen them and propel them into the future. I’ll let you guess which category best describes today’s guest.  As a teenager, Michael Arterberry was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him overcome adversities and set high expectations for his future. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping people navigate the difficulties of life and launch their future into motion. For more than 25 years, he has been helping teens and adults use what they have gone through as a catalyst for success rather than an obstacle for failure. Michael is the author of Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement, a daily motivational book. Additional information about his struggles as a child and a debilitating spinal cord injury as an adult can be found in his wife's book, God Was Holding My Hand. **Please be advised that a brief sexual assault/molestation reference occurs in this episode. If you are triggered by this, please check for details about skipping over it as you listen.  A positive mindset Is it possible to overcome extreme difficulties and develop a positive mindset? The answer is YES! Despite a horrific childhood, Michael was determined to create a positive mindset. A big part of that was his relationship with God, and in addition, athletic endeavors became his respite. He didn’t think of playing sports as “therapy” at the time, but that’s what took place as he reflects on his years in school. He played basketball, baseball, football, and soccer, and he was able to channel all of his energy from his family challenges to “play like a wild man.” Having a healthy outlet for his frustrations helped fuel his positive mindset, along with his determination and resilience. TWEET: Having a healthy outlet for frustration helps fuel a positive mindset. #chasingdreams Getting results How does Michael’s youth program produce the desired results? As he goes into schools around the country, his two-day program helps young people recognize the land mines in their stories and the damage they didn’t even know they had sustained. He teaches them to revisit those painful places but know that they can’t stay there if they want to move forward. Michael shares examples of kids who were wounded deeply; some go on to have miraculous healing journeys, and some choose to go in other tragic directions. Besides his youth program, Michael created his book of motivation and encouragement to help even more people. TWEET: You can’t stay in the painful places if you want to move forward. #chasingdreams Feeling lost Where do you turn when you feel lost? Michael likens feeling “lost” in life to going through a shipwreck and finding the broken pieces that are left---and holding onto them. He says to take those broken pieces and change your perspective. He warns us to be careful to not “drown in the shallow water,” but to stand up and walk on. The only constant in life is change, so look at 2020’s challenges as a time in which we’ve all felt lost in some way. Again, change your perspective and move forward.  TWEET: Be careful not to drown in the shallow water. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Narrow down your dream to what will make you happy, not what will give you the biggest paycheck.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:01] What young Michael wanted to be [11:31] How Michael developed a positive mindset [14:40] How Michael started his non-profit [18:40] The results of Michael’s program  [24:36] Why Michael wrote his book [29:41] The importance of self-reflection [33:07] When you’re feeling lost [39:08] The value of listening [41:28] Why we need to live conscious lives [46:41] How you can “check-in” on others [47:44] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Michael’s Facebook Michael’s LinkedIn Michael’s Website Shake the Dirt Experience Youth Voices Center Inc. I’m excited to introduce you to a new friend that I met at a conference last October. If your life feels out of balance and out of whack, then this is the show for you. You’ll learn how to take action steps to become a more empowered and grounded person no matter what obstacles you face.  Melanie C. Klein, M.A., is a sought-after empowerment coach and respected thought leader in the areas of authentic empowerment, visibility, and body confidence. She is also a successful writer, speaker, and Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies. With over two decades of professional and personal work, Melanie integrates her background in mindfulness and embodied wisdom with her academic expertise and advocacy work. In this way, she offers a holistic and unique pathway to personal freedom and prosperity, one that is customized to each individual.  How to thrive How do you meet new challenges? Melanie explains that mindset and a sense of self are two keys to thriving during a challenging time like going through a global pandemic. We know from this point forward, our new normal will become normal. To be empowered, we have to be deeply rooted in ourselves and discerning about helpful conversations and decisions, along with being conscious of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The biggest, brightest expressions of ourselves aren’t dependent on external circumstances. The key question to ask is, “How am I approaching this?” It all comes down to mindset, so try to view each obstacle as a new opportunity. TWEET: Try to view each obstacle as a new opportunity. @melmelklein #chasingdreams Making your own choices Are you honest with yourself? Times like these give us time and space to consider things we’ve overlooked in the past. When we’re forced into a slow-down mode, we have time to rest deeply and make informed decisions. We have to decide when to lean out and when to lean in. It’s essential to pay attention to your inner compass and become comfortable with yourself in this “dance of existence.” Melanie explains how to know when to flow and when to create more of a container for yourself. TWEET: Slow-down mode gives us time to rest deeply and make informed decisions. @melmelklein #chasingdreams The two M’s: meditation and mindfulness What was your explosive moment? Melanie recalls the eye-opening experience of a class she took years ago that allowed her to understand more fully the systems and structures in the world. It helped her decide what her life’s work would be in what she calls “an explosive and liberating moment.” Soon after, she discovered yoga--way before yoga was cool. Pairing yoga with meditation has helped her develop a critical consciousness in the world, which has been fortified by her mindfulness practices. After more than 20 years of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, Melanie still turns to these practices daily to find balance in her life.  TWEET: Melanie discovered yoga way before yoga was cool @melmelklein #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Get honest with yourself. Many dream chasers start with a bang, but they falter in their purpose when obstacles and challenges come. We might let other people derail us, or our own limiting beliefs, or we give up on our dream simply because the going gets tough. If you’ve ever been tempted to quit--to give up on your dream--then you can’t miss today’s show.  Sourena Vasseghi was born with cerebral palsy, and he now faces life with a severe speech impediment and is bound to a wheelchair. He has defied the odds to become ”The writer who cannot write and the speaker who cannot speak.” Sourena is an inspirational and motivational presenter, an award-winning author, and the owner and founder of The Sourena V. Group. Together with his stage partner, Chris Stevenson, Sourena speaks and produces content dealing with motivation, achieving goals, mindset, and working around challenges to reach amazing success.  A mindset to succeed Who gave you your mindset? Sourena quickly attributes his mindset to his parents. When he was growing up, they never acted like cerebral palsy was a big deal, and they refused to let Sourena act like a victim. His parents told him he could have a good life, and they treated him like he was no different than other kids. It was only when he reached the end of high school that he realized that he couldn’t be independent and mobile like other kids going off to college. Because he still had big plans and dreams, he didn’t let that stop him from figuring out how to make his life work. Sourena has never viewed himself as an overcomer because he can’t “overcome” his handicap; he is just a man who has figured out how to deal with his challenges with the right mindset--and that’s the key. TWEET: Dealing with challenges with the right mindset is key. @SourenaV #chasingdreams Motivation and purpose What drives you? Sourena says that experiences are what drives him. He wants to experience everything he can in this life, and he plans not to let his handicap be what drives him. He enlisted the help of Chris, a fitness trainer, to be a translator and speaker when he gives keynote presentations. Chris says that Sourena has “a lockdown mindset,” refusing to let his handicap stop him. Sourena wants to show everyone how to deal with their challenges so they can accomplish anything. A big lesson he teaches people is that your mindset isn’t fixed, but it can change every day as we rewrite our narrative in new directions.  TWEET: Every day, we can rewrite our narrative in new directions. @SourenaV #chasingdreams How we think What controls your thinking? Are your thoughts controlled by logic or emotions? As humans, we are wired for safety. We are wired not to take chances and not to get “eaten” out in the world; we are wired for pure survival. Sourena says that we don’t pay attention to our “emotional diet” like we do our physical diet. We tend to dwell on negative thoughts and fear. When we saturate our minds with bad news, we have to do other things to fortify our emotional diet in positive ways, like taking walks outside, spending time with people we love, and reading books. Chris echoes Sourena’s words by saying that fear comes from the unknown, from something we can’t control, or from the feeling that we aren’t worthy. The key to overcoming fear is to reach out for support. Our world has changed a lot in the past few weeks. These changes have been unimaginable, and with those, there is a new emphasis on mental health. If you’re looking for ways to manage and alleviate the anxiety and overwhelm that we all experience, then today’s show is for you. Dr. Kevin Gilliland, Psy. D. is an expert in mental health, depression, and addiction. He’s the author of Struggle Well, Live Well: 60 Ways to Navigate Life’s Good, Bad, and In-Between. After working for more than two decades in healthcare as a clinical psychologist, Kevin became a pioneer of outpatient treatment as the CEO and Executive Director of Innovation 360, a treatment center for alcohol and drug addiction, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, family therapy, and life development.  What’s going on? How are you handling the stress of living in a pandemic? Stress is hitting many people in their finances and their security, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. We all have to deal with these unusual circumstances, but it’s significantly worse for those who battle mental health and mood disorders. This trying time is forcing all of us to be mindful in new ways every day. Mental health and wellness are often pushed to the back burner of our lives, but these difficult times are forcing us to prioritize mental health. Kevin explains the proven connection between stress and cardiovascular health, which is another reason to practice stress management techniques.  TWEET: There’s a proven connection between stress and cardiovascular health. @dr_keving #chasingdreams Just breathe Do you practice breathing techniques? Kevin says deep, belly breaths are his #1 recommendation for any dream chaser. Focused breathing elicits the opposite of the “fight or flight” response. It brings a “rest and digest” response, which settles us into a calming mode and redistributes nourishing blood flow throughout the body. Breathing can lower blood pressure to an extent greater than eating right and exercising. Do you need to slow down and calm yourself? Kevin says to try some apps to practice deep breathing--and calm yourself.  TWEET: Focused breathing brings the body a calming “rest and digest” response. @dr_keving #chasingdreams Don’t be plugged in all the time How much time do you spend each day on social media? Watching/listening to the news? There are dangers when we are “plugged in” all the time. Being constantly plugged into social media will lead you to compare yourself to others. Being constantly plugged into the news will cloud your mind with negativity. A little bit of information will decrease anxiety, but too much information will increase anxiety. More is NOT better! Find the sweet spot of getting the right amount of information, but don’t make the mistake of living too much on social media or listening to the news too often. Put boundaries in place, and find ways to manage and evaluate the effects on your mental health.  TWEET: There are dangers when we are “plugged in” all the time. @dr_keving #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Practice focused breathing.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:25] What’s going on right now in our world? I met today’s guest at a conference in Atlantic City. I quickly found her to be a kindred spirit, as we felt an immediate connection and friendship, despite our different cultural backgrounds. She joins us all the way from her home country of Australia! Samantha Riley left the corporate world and ventured out into the world of business over 25 years ago because she wanted the freedom to spend more time with family to be rewarded for working harder. She has built multiple businesses and grew her first seven-figure business before she was 30 years old. Sam leveraged herself out of her brick and mortar businesses and found herself working less than ten hours each week. Now she has replicated that same system to build her online coaching business, which gives her even more freedom as she’s now location independent. Sam teaches her system to successful entrepreneurs, business owners, and experts, and she helps them develop their thought leadership so they can replace their income, reclaim their time, and lead a more purposeful life.  Taking a big gamble If you landed the safe, stable government job that your family dreamed of for you, would you leave it to jump into the unknown? Many people wouldn’t, but Samantha isn’t like everyone else. Being a ballerina was her childhood passion, consuming her nights and weekends for many years of training. As she reached adulthood, she was told that she’d never make it as a dancer, so she gave in to her passion for teaching and opened a dance studio after her brief two-year stint in the corporate world with a government job. Logic told her to stay in the stable world, but she realized no one around her was happy. She made the decision to take the gamble, leave the corporate stability, and start over, even though she and her husband had two kids and a mortgage at the time. TWEET: Logic told Sam to stay in the stable world, but she realized no one around her was happy. @TheSamRiley #chasingdreams Sam’s advice for others What drives you? For Sam, it was her passion for dancing that dominated her business life for 20 years. A split from her first husband put her through a difficult time, so branched into holding retreats around spirituality and health and wellness. She helped people with job troubles and moved into the coaching world. Sam quickly realized that she loved the business end more than delivering the expertise; it was through networking and administrating that enlightenment came to her. She says that the problem is that most people won’t make life-changing decisions until their back is against the wall, mainly because they haven’t acknowledged what they really want out of life.  TWEET: It was through networking and administrating that enlightenment came to her. @TheSamRiley #chasingdreams Finding fulfillment Why do so many mothers put everyone else first and themselves last? Sam grew up in a household where she saw her mom always put herself last, and she fell into that same pattern with all the aspects of motherhood. As a result, she became resentful, tired, and unfulfilled. She never took time for herself, choosing instead to be the martyr. It took separating from her husband for her to realize that she COULD do things for herself. That big step has made her life very different now than what it once was. Everything she teaches now is based on what people want out of life and how they can make the choices to get them there.  TWEET: Always putting herself last made Sam feel resentful, tired, and unfulfilled. @TheSamRiley #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”The #1 thing you have to do is to get really clear about what you really want. Even though you might not know it, you are a hero, and your life is a hero’s journey. Join us to gain a new perspective on your obstacles, struggles, choices, and victories, and learn why you must embrace the role of a mentor in helping others.  J. Scott MacMillan is an author, filmmaker, and certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming life coach whose work centers around the theory of the Hero’s Journey. Drawing upon the concept’s relatable and inspirational nature, MacMillan has adopted tools to help himself and others over the last 15 years. MacMillan’s coaching business, Hero Life, uses behavioral learning techniques, adult learning theory, and the Hero’s Journey to help people create new patterns and apply critical thinking skills to daily life. Combining his personal life experiences and expertise in psychology, Scott helps people overcome periods of feeling stuck by working through fear and doubt to find their life purpose. His four-step plan is designed to help people reclaim their power, step into their authentic self, and become the hero of their own life.  A full-circle journey Did you know as a young person the path your life would take? Scott says that he had no clue what to do with his life when he was young. After getting a degree in psychology, he pursued a business career but knew he had an uncommon passion to keep learning. Within that passion, he found a knack for helping others get “unstuck” from the ruts in their lives. It took a full-circle journey for him to get where he is today. His theory of life as the Hero’s Journey is a new way to look at life in general, with a new understanding of what someone has experienced in having the courage to move past the fears and move forward.  TWEET: Scott had an uncommon passion to keep learning. @jscottmacmillan #chasingdreams The Hero’s Journey Do you feel like a hero? Scott explains how a hero’s story resonates with all of us. He came up with 12 stages of the hero’s journey, which correspond to the life story of each person. The first four stages involve preparation for the journey, in which you learn to step out of comfort zones, overcome obstacles, and take risks. The next four stages in the journey are those of honing skills and learning. The last four stages are about finding the treasure and conquering the battle, meaning we’ve learned the lessons. The final stage is to tell our stories to help others--all because of what we’ve experienced.  TWEET: The Hero’s Journey involves 12 stages that correspond to the life story of each person. @jscottmacmillan #chasingdreams Limiting beliefs What are your limiting beliefs? We all have limiting beliefs, which are the beliefs we create to protect ourselves, like when we say, “I’m not good enough.” We form these beliefs in childhood, and then we use them as armor that we put up as we go through life. We use these limiting beliefs to sabotage our progress as adults. Remember that every limiting belief is a false belief. Scott’s coaching program uses a simple process of identifying, clearing out, and reversing these limiting beliefs. He uses visualization and meditation to lock in the new belief and rewire your brain for success. TWEET: Limiting beliefs sabotage our progress as adults. @jscottmacmillan #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Next time you watch a movie, look for the hero’s journey where they jump into the unknown world. If you’re a regular listener, then you know that mental health is a very important topic to me. Mindfulness is something we can all learn to practice to help deal with the stress of life. I saw today’s guest on a TED talk, and I knew I had to bring her to the show. A self-described “brain geek,” Dr. Kristen Race has spent the last 12 years exploring the nexus between mindfulness and neuroscience. She is the author of Mindful Parenting, the founder of Mindful Life, and Head of Mindfulness at Solvasa, a pioneer in integrative beauty. Dr. Race has been featured in The New York Times, NPR, CNN, and many more. She’s taught her mindfulness methods to over 50,000 worldwide leaders, including Sheryl Sandberg and Sara Blakely.  The accidental entrepreneur What did you want to be when you were young? The truth is that most of us end up being something totally different than those original dreams. Young Kristen wanted to be an Olympic gold medalist, and it didn’t matter to her what sport it would be. Later, she wanted to be a teacher, mainly because of some inspiring and impactful teachers she had. Kristen started her career as a teacher before her path took some interesting twists and turns. From teaching, she moved into mindfulness, which was a natural flow for Kristen. She was drawn to struggling students and wanted to develop helpful tools for them, so she got a master’s degree in Educational Psychology, and then went on to obtain a doctorate in Child, Family, and School Psychology with an emphasis in neuroscience. Working as an intern in both a high-risk, high-need school and a wealthy independent school allowed her to see incredible levels of stress and anxiety in students. A personal autoimmune disease crisis led Kristen to try mindfulness tools with students, so she formalized a curriculum and began training teachers and parents before she moved on to the world of corporate training.  TWEET: Most of us end up being something totally different than our original dreams. @DrKristenRace #chasingdreams Why trying--and failing--are good for kids Do you like to fail? None of us enjoy the feeling of failure, but it’s necessary for us to experience growth and learning. When we put too much structure on our kids, we don’t allow them to try new things. Part of learning includes taking risks, failing, and getting back up again. It’s the getting back up again that builds resilience. Kids need to have room to negotiate difficult social situations. We can help kids with the stress response in their brains to stress by teaching them to solve problems, control behaviors, think positively, and engage with others. Kristen explains her PBR method for handling stress triggers.  TWEET: Failure is necessary for us to experience growth and learning. @DrKristenRace #chasingdreams Take care of yourself How well do you take care of yourself? Do you feel the need to respond immediately to every single email? Do you feel pressure on the weekends or on days off to be available for work 24/7? If you can’t pull back and give yourself time away from work, then you are adding unnecessary stress to your life. Some organizations realize this, and they are mandating “no email Saturdays” to guard against stressing out their employees. Employers and employees alike need to step up and make clear the expectations on response times; this will help keep people from being stressed out and burned out in their jobs. You can’t sacrifice yourself for any job. Kristen explains how mismanaged stress will take a heavy toll on your health.  TWEET: You can’t sacrifice yourself for any job. @DrKristenRace #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”At the end of each day, think of three good things that happened that day. Share them with someone, or at least write them down. Studies show that forming this habit for two weeks will lead to a significant increase in happiness, a decrease in anxiety and depression, better sleep quality, and better work/life balance.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:51] Young Kristen’s dreams and the path to entrepreneurship [11:06] Why all these stressed-out students? We’re kicking off March, Women’s History Month, with two amazing women. They followed their passion and created an innovative podcast around the question, “What would you do right now if you had $10,000?” Alison Burns and Lulu Picart host the comedy podcast, 10K Dollar Day, which can be described as imaginary luxury travel comedy. They also coach students of all ages at Find Your Light Coaching. Lulu is an actor, director, writer, singer, and doggy mom. Alison is a comedian, actress, singer, lyricist, choreographer, wife, and mom. She’s an award-winning musical theatre performer and a huge Gordon Ramsey fan.  Not the same old podcast If you started a podcast, what would it be? When Alison and Lulu lived together outside NYC and worked in the theatre industry, they occupied themselves on the long commute by fantasizing about living in the lap of luxury. This pastime became the basis for their podcast that’s crammed full of comedy and improvisation. They research each place they “visit,” picking them independently, never knowing where the other person is “going.” Then they spend the podcast revealing the ways they would spend $10K in one day of imaginary luxury travel. They love finding odd places and dreaming of crazy luxury items that most people could never afford. The podcast also includes discussions of their latest obsessions, along with their giveaway to highlight specific charities. Sometimes a kid can be the best example of a dream chaser. This is certainly true of my guest today. His family epitomizes what it means to chase your dreams, as each one of them works hard to pursue their passions. I think you’ll find today’s interview refreshing and inspiring. Travis Wolfe, Jr. is a 13-year-old actor, hip hop and breakdancer, and host. After booking his very first audition for a 6ABC News promo, Travis knew he was destined to be an actor. Within five years, Travis landed the role of “Dele” in the CBS series Bob Hearts Abishola, and he’s been featured in shows like Grownish, The Neighborhood, and Laff Mob’s Laff Tracks. He also has a recurring role on Season 3 of Raven’s Home as “Lil Lo Lo.” Besides acting and dancing, Travis uses motivational speaking to encourage other young people to follow their dreams and pursue their passions. What it takes to succeed as an actor What do you think it takes to succeed as an actor? It’s not as easy as walking into your first audition and riding the easy train to sudden stardom. Travis says that most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. Putting a show together takes a lot of preparation and dedication from many people besides just the actors. Travis makes many sacrifices for his acting career, but he says it doesn’t feel like a job since he loves what he does. Besides his acting work on the Warner Brothers set, he has several hours of schoolwork to do every day.  TWEET: Most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Learning from each experience Do you think most actors experience overnight success? Travis says that it rarely happens that way in the acting profession. He started off doing small parts in commercials and student films, and this path seems to be a normal rite of passage for most actors. Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. Many actors have stories like Travis---of working hard to achieve their dreams. An interesting fact about Travis’ dreams is that he’d love to be a stand-up comedian someday.  TWEET: Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams What Travis enjoys the most about acting What do you think is the best thing about acting? You might think it’s the paycheck, but that’s not what Travis says. What he loves most is the opportunity to interact with other people and form relationships with them. Actors don’t just arrive on the set and act in their scenes. Travis explains that he spends time connecting with other actors to make the relationships seem real. He loves to find friends and mentors in his set family at each project. As far as future writing or directing, Travis follows the advice given to him by Mario Van Peebles, who told him to learn to be his own boss. This means learning to write, direct, and produce so that he can work for himself and have more control over his career.  TWEET: Learn to be your own boss. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Keep going. As we kick off Black History Month, I couldn’t find a better dream chaser with whom to start than today’s guest. Listen and be inspired by the story of her dream-chase to find passion, purpose, joy, and fulfillment in leaving corporate America behind and leaping into the entrepreneurial life.  Teneshia Warner is the founder and CEO of Egami Group, one of the country’s most successful multicultural marketing and communication firms and creator of The Dream Project. Through The Dream Project, Teneshia has spoken to more than 150,000 dreamers across the nation and brought together nearly 200 leading business moguls and celebrities. Her book, The Big Stretch: 90 Days to Expand Your Dreams, Crush Your Goals, and Create Your Own Success (McGraw-Hill Education, November 22, 2019), is a soul-searching, life-transforming, twelve-week, boot camp that reveals how to get from where you are to where you dream of being---in life and business.  Listening to the signals Do you get internal signals when it’s time to move on to something new? Do you pay attention to them? Teneshia was a computer science major in college, and then she went on to be a project manager at IBM. She was busy climbing the corporate ladder, and her life looked perfect from the outside, but she felt signals telling her that something wasn’t right. She ignored the signals but kept facing each workday with dread, especially every Monday. This went on for years and years until her parents challenged her to DO something about her situation besides complaining about it. At this point, Teneshia became open to other options. She went back to school to pursue her MBA. An assignment there to analyze life decisions turned out to be exactly what she needed to take the next steps and move forward with purpose and passion.  TWEET: Don’t ignore the signals that tell you something isn’t right. @teneshiajwarner #chasingdreams From the inside out What brings you joy? This was the first question Teneshia needed to answer in her transition. Through simple self-awareness, she listed the things that interested her, the skills she possessed, and the things that brought her joy in life. Her list included creativity, entertainment, music, and fashion. Once she had the list, she began researching careers that were tied to her areas of interest. She wanted to transition into the music and entertainment industry, but she had no connection and no way to get her foot in the door. Teneshia decided that volunteering would be her way to learn. The end result of that endeavor is that she went from unpaid intern to general manager of the company in exactly one year. TWEET: Teneshia made a list of what brought her joy and researched careers tied to her interests. @teneshiajwarner #chasingdreams Making the leap How attached are you to your comfort zone? She downsized to a studio apartment so small that she “could open the front door from the shower.” She gave herself a timeline of one year to “make it,” which kicked her into a new level of urgency. Even though she wasn’t sure how things would happen, she had a plan laid out. Her success is an example of putting in the work. Now she has a new book and a new company to show for it. I hope your 2020 is off to a great start! This is a great time to talk about tips for the new year regarding a vitally important concept: your mindset. Having a positive mindset and exercising optimistic determination are key elements in chasing your dream. We’re jumping into these topics and more with today’s inspirational guest.  Jacquelynn Peterson is a 20-year corporate veteran who has turned into a joy and purpose advocate. She knows just how exhausting and painful it is to live someone else’s dream and slave away at work that doesn’t excite you while not knowing where your life is really headed. As a child of Vietnamese immigrant parents, getting good grades, going to college, and getting a good job was her prescription for success. With that in mind, Jacquelynn climbed the corporate ladder for 20 years, from entry-level to six-figure positions. Even at the height of her career, she still wasn’t fulfilled or excited about the direction of her life. A miraculous turn occurred when she defied all logic to find clarity on her life vision while at rock bottom. She went from drifting aimlessly through her life and career, incurring $150K+ in debt, and enduring a struggling marriage to achieving financial freedom, a strong marriage, and finding a way to do what she loves. Now she’s helping others find clarity on their life vision so they can start living the life they are meant to live with purpose, joy, and direction.  A focus on mindset What events have happened to focus attention on your mindset? For most people, going through difficult times and personal struggles are the impetus to turn their mindset around. In Jacquelynn’s case, it was an accumulation of personal life experiences that turned her focus inward. She came from a divorced family and was the only girl among six children of her Asian-immigrant father who always worked multiple jobs. As she was left home with her stepmother and brothers, Jacquelynn figured out how life worked and how she could use self-talk to get through rough days. Through TV shows, she observed life and learned how to interact with others. It was this background that spawned her love of human psychology and human behavior. TWEET: You can use self-talk to get through the rough days. #chasingdreams Building positive self-talk How do your thoughts make you feel? Do you ever hear that negative voice telling you that you aren’t good enough and that you’ll never accomplish your dreams? Jacquelynn uses the personal example of launching into a new field in which the “little voice” tells you that your experience is inadequate and that you’ll never succeed. You have to differentiate between facts and your assumptions. Jacquelynn says that if you’re going to make assumptions, then assume things that are positive and will serve you well in positive ways. It takes intentional practice to exercise your mind to gravitate toward positive thoughts about yourself.  TWEET: You have to differentiate between facts and your assumptions. #chasingdreams Defying logic When have you defied human logic in your life? Jacquelynn found herself without a job and in massive debt, but she still didn’t let those factors stop her from moving into her dreams. She kept thinking about what she wanted to do with excitement and enthusiasm, and she knew that these consistent great feelings about her dreams would eventually lead to something wonderful. With meditation and visualization, Jacquelynn focused on clarifying and defining the vision of her dream business. Thank you for kicking off the New Year with us! You know there is nothing closer to my heart than the story of someone not only dreaming big but finding ways to chase those dreams. Such is the story of today’s guest. Join us for more! Marc Megna is co-owner of Anatomy Fitness gym and a top strength and conditioning coach in Miami, helping hundreds of clients--from celebrities and professional athletes to motivated beginners--achieve their fitness goals. Adhering to the “Dream big, never quit” motto that Marc learned from his mother, he put in years of hard work and unrelenting dedication to transform his life. After playing football and earning a degree in sociology at the University of Richmond, Marc was drafted by the New York Jets in 1999. During his seven-year professional football career, he played for the New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals, and Montreal Alouettes.  Now an elite trainer and fitness model, Marc has written for such publications as Fitness RX and Dr. Oz. He’s been featured on the cover of Inside Fitness and Muscle & Fitness magazines. You can listen to his motivating Megna Method podcast and visit www.megnamethod.com. Sports as a coping mechanism How do you cope with life’s problems? Marc learned early on that sports were his coping mechanism for dealing with a difficult childhood. He was a shy, insecure, fat kid, but sports were a big deal in his family. Since he figured out that athletes gained the respect of others, that’s what Marc aspired to become. Being a top athlete became his mission as a young kid, and he was determined to work harder than anyone else. His perseverance paid off, and he made it to the NFL. Now, with a profession built on sports and fitness, Marc can impact others’ lives with his talents.  TWEET: Being a top athlete became Marc’s mission as a young kid, and his perseverance paid off. @marcmegna #chasingdreams The end of a football career How do you know when it’s time to move on? Even though Marc loved his time in the NFL, it was pretty clear to him that he needed to try something else after a series of injuries. He sustained a severe knee injury and infection that almost cost him his leg, and since his knee was compromised, his body was out of alignment. This led to a serious tear in his back, and he knew his football career was over. Marc learned that a significant time commitment is required in anything in which you wish to succeed, and he knew that football coaching was not the route he wanted to take. His current career as a gym co-owner and fitness coach takes a lot of his time, but he genuinely enjoys the time he spends investing in others.  TWEET: After a series of injuries, Marc knew he needed to try something else, and football coaching was not the route he wanted to take. @marcmegna #chasingdreams Don’t get stuck! How do you “show up”? Marc explains that it’s great to show up every day, but what you do when you’re there is important. Doing the same thing over and over again will not yield a different result. Most people are deathly afraid of getting outside their comfort zone. When what you do each day is a drudgery that you hate, then you’re probably stuck in your comfort zone. Do what it takes to get unstuck! Most people who chase their dreams don’t aspire to build a company. We all know that an endeavor of that magnitude takes a huge commitment of your time and energy. Making a career out of your passion is a rare achievement that few are fortunate enough to do. Today’s guest shares a candid behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and successes in her journey to entrepreneurship.  Lisa Pongrass is the founder and CEO of Canvas & Hyde, a luxury handbag company based in Brooklyn, New York. An acclaimed interior designer and fashion stylist in her Australian homeland, Lisa has over twenty years’ experience that has propelled her to the forefront of fashion and beauty on the international stage. In 2006, Lisa was named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s 100 Best-Dressed Australians, recognized for her classic style, an element that has been the mainstay of her direction and inspiration for Canvas & Hyde. With the rise of digitally trend-driven “it” bags of the moment dominating the fashion world, Lisa sought to create her own line of “anti-it bags” through Canvas & Hyde. With an intrinsic love of design and fashion, she focused on creating a brand that emphasized quality craftsmanship and a minimal urban aesthetic. Although Lisa was at the forefront of the fashion industry in Australia, she immersed herself in a new challenge--an intense education of the intricacies of the manufacturing process. To assure luxurious quality control, Lisa delved into researching and learning the craft of luxury handbag construction for over a year. Determined to source the finest quality and sustainable materials in partnership with environmentally responsible factories, Lisa collaborated with factories in Italy and the US. With her strong vision and meticulous research, Canvas & Hyde was born.  A lifelong love for fashion How many people get to turn their passion into a company and career? For Lisa, her nerdy and obsessive love for fashion was never what she thought her career would involve. After working in interior design for about ten years, she made the shift into the connected field of designing handbags. It was important to her to start her own business and give birth to a meaningful brand, which she calls a “dream come true.” Launching out held a certain degree of uncertainty because there were so many things she didn’t know about the business. Lisa says, “As a solo entrepreneur, I feel like I have one pizza and ten children to feed.”  TWEET: “As a solo entrepreneur, I feel like I have one pizza and ten children to feed.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Handling the rough patches How do you handle life’s rough patches? Lisa says that challenges come up constantly when you run your own business. Being kind to yourself is essential. Lisa rewards herself with a nice hot bath to relax at the end of the day. She realizes that what she’s doing isn’t a matter of life and death, like the challenges many people around the world are facing each day. Another important aspect in handling challenges is not to take yourself too seriously. Lisa likes to take a “big picture” view in being grateful for the opportunities. TWEET: “Being kind to yourself is essential.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Balancing work and life Don’t we hear a lot about “work-life balance”? Is there really such a thing? As a single mom for four years, Lisa found it difficult to juggle the demands of motherhood with building a brand, and she gave up sleep at times to make it work. As an empty-nester now, Lisa finds the balance even more difficult because she’s on her own to create the balance. Sticking to a schedule to eat and sleep well is harder to do. It’s rewarding to achieve each milestone of success, whether a large or small one because you know you’ve done it for yourself. Lisa says that success is the greatest high in the world and is what propels her to get up the next day.  TWEET: “Success is the greatest high in the world.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:10] Young Lisa and her dreams [3:35] An avenue of uncertainty [6:42] What Lisa would have done differently [8:49] How she knew it was time to hire more people [10:07] What surprised Lisa on her journey [13:40] What networking is all about [14:46] Handling challenges as they come [17:45] Balancing work and life [22:32] Goals vs. journey [25:48] When you’re struggling to pivot [27:33] It’s never too late [30:11] Get to know Lisa better RESOURCES MENTIONED Lisa on Facebook Lisa on Twitter Lisa on Instagram Lisa on LinkedIn Lisa’s Website   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: It surprises me every day how much people want me to succeed. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Knowing one’s weakness is a strength. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams At the time I considered launching my business, I thought, “How difficult can it be?” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams It’s important to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams

Some people would let a clinical depression diagnosis stop them in their tracks, but not my guest for today’s show. He battled through the darkness and took steps to get himself in a good place on the path to achieving his dreams. He is now living his best life in CA with an exciting and highly-coveted job at one of America’s most innovative tech companies.  Sebastian Kurian is a Corporate Counsel at Google supporting its Energy and Location Strategy Team. He focuses primarily on energy infrastructure and supply transactions globally, including maintaining Google's 100% renewable energy goal and pursuing its ambitious, new 24/7 carbon-free goal.  At Google, Sebastian has closed renewable energy deals across four continents.  Sebastian also handles data center site selection and other utility infrastructure and supply matters. Before joining Google, Sebastian was a Corporate Counsel at Amazon, where he was the lead global utilities lawyer for Amazon Web Services. During his time at Amazon, he closed or advised on many renewable energy deals. He is also the former Assistant General Counsel of Clark Construction, one of the oldest and largest building and civil construction firms in the United States.  Sebastian began his legal career as a commercial real estate and finance associate at Miles & Stockbridge. A native of Baltimore, MD, Sebastian received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania with honors (2004) and his JD from the University of Maryland with honors (2008).  Why Sebastian pursued a law degree What is the best way to arrive at a career choice? Most people would advise you to focus on your strengths and interests and chose a career that aligns with those. Sebastian knew that the dental and medical fields popular with many young Indian students would not be a good fit for him. In short, he didn’t like math, and he wasn’t very good at it. What he did like, however, was political science and business, so he thought a law degree would be a versatile beginning point that would utilize his strengths. Since he didn’t know any other lawyers in his family or community, he went into the career blindly, not knowing what he was choosing. As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7 and never had any time off from the long hours and demanding schedule.  TWEET: “As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams Sebastian’s battle with depression If you’ve ever battled depression, then you know there can be a stigma attached; this is especially true for Indians, where a depression diagnosis brings a certain amount of shame and dishonor. Many Indians won’t seek professional help for depression symptoms, precisely for this reason. Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems. Things had spiraled downward so badly that he had even seriously contemplated suicide to the point of planning out how he would take his life. Sebastian had never dreamed that depression would affect him, but he found himself going through treatment that consisted of therapy and antidepressants. Now, he’s living proof that you can fight through the darkness and come out on the other side to move forward and achieve your wildest dreams. TWEET: “Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams At a crossroads How many times do random encounters put us in the perfect place we need to be? This happened to Sebastian as he struggled in an unhappy place back in 2012. He was miserable in his job, and his career had gone backward. He was stepping back from a relationship, his job, and life in general. Sebastian says he was extremely close to quitting his job and joining the Air Force, and he had even contemplated moving to Africa. It was a random incident that moved him across the country and landed him his dream job at Google. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “It’s OK to quit and walk away from something. Sometimes quitting and moving on is the best answer.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:37] Blazing the trail for Indian lawyers [5:47] Why Sebastian chose a law career at first [9:00] The law profession and its long hours [13:07] The move from East Coast to West Coast [18:44] A diagnosis of depression [25:15] Cultural stigmas of depression [27:00] Feeling supported [29:45] People with happy faces on the outside [30:38] What Sebastian was thinking [36:55] What therapy is like on the front end [43:29] Where Sebastian is headed next [47:10] ONE action for a dream chaser [48:52] Get to know Sebastian better RESOURCES MENTIONED: Sebastian on Instagram Sebastian on Linkedin Sebastian on Rising Stars 2019 Watch the episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cZAj9xRriyw TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: When you have nothing to lose, it’s a lot easier to take a risk. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: For Indians, a depression diagnosis brings shame and dishonor. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: I don’t have a Cinderella story about why I went to law school, but for me, it worked out, and I’m happy where I am today. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: The West Coast life is more laid back and less pretentious than life on the East Coast. @skurian8  #chasingdreams

He currently helps design professionals become better leaders, better communicators, and better people. Always learning Do you love to learn? This is one of Randy’s most fascinating traits, and it’s a healthy one for anyone to have. He explains that he’s always been wired to search for more information and knowledge. He was raised by his grandparents after his parents divorced. It was Randy’s grandfather who taught him to take in the rich knowledge available in books and to make books his friends. When he moved into his grandfather’s office/library, his bed literally faced a library wall of books that he can still envision today. Randy has a strong mindset about life and gives advice to others who face doubt, failure, and negativity. He says that the second half can be better than the first half. You can preserve your health and wellbeing into your later years, and you don’t have to give in to disappointment and failure. “Your life is a body of work, and as long as you’re still breathing, then your story is still being written.” Randy cites Harlan Sanders, Ray Kroc, and Sam Walton as examples of people in mid-life who achieved success after multiple failures.  TWEET: “Your second half can be better than your first half.” @randywilburn #chasingdreams It’s NOT too late! Have you given up because you think it’s too late to make a change and chase your dream? When something you’ve tried isn’t working, you may need to go in a different direction--no matter what your age. Today’s show is about an unlikely dream and a highly unconventional journey into a man’s world by a strong and creative woman. Her creations spark imagination and motivate children of all ages to turn off the TV, put down the video games, and go outside and play! Barbara Butler is the founder and CEO of Barbara Butler Artist-Builder, Inc. She’s been designing and building extraordinary custom treehouses and play structures for children for over 30 years. Barbara does both residential and commercial work in the US and internationally. Barbara’s mother wanted her to be a lawyer, but she loves working with her hands and learning carpentry skills from her brothers. She moved to San Francisco to pursue her artist’s dreams, and soon landed her first play structure job working in the backyard of Bobby McFerrin (the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” guy). Creating these magnificent structures became Barbara’s passion, and she still loves her work 30 years later, as she lives her best life as a kid at heart.  Barbara’s background Have you always known what you wanted to do with your life? Barbara thought she would be a lawyer, mostly because her mother always told her she’d make a good one. She majored in political science and liked it well enough, but realized she didn’t want to be a lawyer. Barbara didn’t know what to do with her life, so she decided to pursue her love of writing by obtaining an English degree. It was the work she did with her brothers in the summers, learning bricklaying and remodeling, that made her realize how much she liked working with her hands. Painting was also one of Barbara’s interests, so she moved to San Francisco and worked with a friend doing artistic backyard designs - and the rest is history. TWEET: When working in your “craft,” you have to sculpt it so that part of your payment is your enjoyment in doing it, because you may never make big money at it. @barbarabutler #chasingdreams Pursuing a passion Can you be successful with no formal training? Barbara has proven that you can. She had no business, woodworking, construction, or architecture training, yet she combined these fields into what she does today. She learned by reading books about what she needed to know and turning to other people to help her with problem-solving. She has since become a licensed contractor and has even expanded her work by building a western-style fort for a woman who lives in a castle in France. TWEET: You can be successful at anything you put your mind to, even if you don't have any formal training. @barbarabutler #chasingdreams A woman in a man’s world How does a woman function in a male-dominated industry? It hasn’t been an easy path for Barbara. She’s been underestimated and not taken seriously. She’s had to prove herself over and over, not letting the men’s attitudes get to her. Her philosophy has developed into one of “forgiving everyone ahead of time” when she goes to a new construction site, and it’s served her well. In her local area, she’s reached the point where she is well-known and respected for her work--even in a man’s world.  Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “You have to put in a half-day of marketing for every four days of work. Don’t wait for people to find you, but put yourself out there and make a name for yourself.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:57] Barbara’s work over the last 30 years (702 custom structures!) Katherine Knapke, RN, BSN, is the Communications and Operations Manager at the American Negotiation Institute, where she uses her experience as a psychiatric nurse trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and a mediator to address the psychological, emotional, and societal concerns that impact women in the workplace. How Katherine arrived at her present work Do you enjoy doing things that scare you? Katherine says she is grateful for the new things she does every day because they scare her. She makes her own schedule and works with many different people as they talk through their shared experiences. After his American Idol audition, William Hung’s rendition of “She Bangs” became famous for all the wrong reasons. Despite the harsh criticism he endured, William persevered, going on to attract a cult following, release three albums, and performing live with Ricky Martin in Las Vegas. A motivational speaker and professional optimist, William is proof that the underdog can succeed when you rise above the haters and choose to be happy. William has appeared on media outlets like FOX, ABC, CNN, and NBC, and in such publications as Rolling Stone magazine, TIME, and USA Today. He’s been a featured guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! And The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Born in Hong Kong, William now resides in Los Angeles and has written a brand new book, Champion by Choice.  Making choices Have you ever been at a crossroads in life? Most of us have been at the point at which we had to make monumental decisions about the future. For William, his decision was to keep going in pursuing his education or to ride the wave of popularity into an entertainment career. With only one life to live, William knew he wanted to live with no regrets at all. He just wanted people to know the truth about him and his story, so the entertainment career was his choice. He went on to do a movie, TV shows, albums, and a book. Even though his career lasted only a few years, he’s happy with his decision and the path it’s brought him down. No one else can determine what it takes for YOU to feel content and fulfilled in life. Society tries to put each of us in a mold, prescribing the steps we should take and the path we should follow. Today’s show focuses on why you need to approach your dreams in a way that is best for you, and not based on what anyone else says.  Kacie Main released her debut book in February 2019. It’s titled, I Gave Up Men for Lent: The Story of a Jaded, Hopelessly Romantic, Health-Conscious Party Girl’s Search for Meaning. Born and raised in Florida, Kacie enjoyed a successful career in the corporate world before leaving it all behind to pursue her dreams of becoming a full-time writer. Kacie holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Communications and a master’s degree in Business Administration. Is writing a real job? Do you have a passion that you would love to make a full-time job? Kacie wasn’t aware of her dreams to be a writer, but writing has always been the way she feels most comfortable in communicating feelings. As a child, she didn’t realize writing could be a “real job.” Her childhood dreams ran from wanting to be a doctor to a child psychologist, and then to the world of business. Her business major was a fallback at the advice of Kacie’s father, and communications and public relations were also areas of interest.  TWEET: Getting outside into nature and away from our screens can greatly improve our mental state. @kaciemain_write #chasingdreams Writing as an outlet Have you lost touch with your goals? Kacie came to a point in her life when she had completely lost touch with her goal of becoming a writer, even though she always wanted to write a book someday. During her big, self-reflection, check-in session at Lent, Kacie went through a time of journaling every day because it felt satisfying to get her thoughts on paper. After a couple of weeks, she wondered if this journal could turn into the book she had always wanted to write. Taking one step at a time, and not even thinking forward to the publishing process, Kacie dedicated her weekends to writing and put a singular focus on the writing process. TWEET: Some of us need to realize that we need to jump from the corporate train. @kaciemain_write #chasingdreams Why people stop chasing their dreams Why DO people stop chasing their dreams? Kacie believes it comes down to the pressure we put on ourselves to achieve certain goals and deadlines, and that we plan too far into the future. A big dream is best reached by taking one little step at a time. Kacie says to give yourself space to step away when you need to because that gives you the fresh perspective to press on. One myth we let society tell us is that we have to fit into a certain mold and timeline to be happy. Society’s mold works for some people, but not for everyone. TWEET: I realized how much I’d allowed outside influences to direct my life. @kaciemain_write #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Just take the first step. Is your work your passion? Sadly, for many people, work is just something they do to earn a paycheck. Today’s show is all about how much more fulfilling your work can be when you commit to being “all in” on chasing your dreams.  Paul Ollinger is a nationally-touring stand-up comedian. After achieving success in the corporate world as one of the first 250 employees of Facebook, Paul finally decided it was time to give in to his true passion---stand-up comedy. Since leaving his job at Facebook, he made the world of stand-up comedy his full-time job and now provides his audiences with a hilarious, but honest, no-nonsense approach to everyday life. Crowds of all ages embrace Paul as a straight shooter who talks about how it is, rather than how we wish it would be. Today, Paul’s comedy career takes him to clubs and corporate events all over North America, where he has opened for top comics and been featured at major comedy clubs and festivals. Paul is also the host of Crazy Money, a podcast in which he interviews entrepreneurs, celebrities, authors, and artists with a humorous perspective on money, wealth, and careers. The show focuses on how we think about and live with money, both as a society and as individuals.  Flip-flopping along Have you ever floundered between careers? Paul flip-flopped between his corporate and comedy careers for about 15 years, simply because he was fearful to launch into comedy as a full-time endeavor. When he first joined Facebook, he left his comedy dreams behind completely, but always felt much tension and conflict in that decision. He says that his creative inner self ate away at him until he knew he had to leave Facebook and do something else. At the time, he was too scared to admit to himself that what he wanted was to focus full-time on comedy. TWEET: What would happen if I gave it my all? @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Take a big-picture view Is your career what you should be doing? Paul loves his career in comedy today and is glad he dared to leave the corporate world behind, but he admits that some days are just a grind. He explains why it’s important to take a big-picture, high-level view of your career. Some days come when he feels like he isn’t getting the traction he needs in the comedy business, but there are other days when he knows he’s on the right track to accomplish his goals. TWEET: It’s the relationship between what you want and what you have that defines your wealth. @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Work: much more than a paycheck Is your work just something you do to earn a paycheck? Paul says that work is about so much more than a paycheck! It’s about relationships, camaraderie, and identity. When he didn’t have work in his life, he felt lonely, depressed, and adrift. Work helps you meet new challenges, learn new things, and have a sense of belonging; Paul didn’t realize he was missing out on these things until he went through a time when work wasn’t part of his life. All of these attitudes played into the decision to start his podcast to explore how our relationship with money affects our decision-making and our overall happiness.  TWEET: If you have a Plan B, then you’ll be tempted to use it. @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Think in decades.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:22] Getting to know Paul [5:46] An interesting career that began at Facebook [9:15] Why Paul bailed on comedy completely for a while [11:55] Why Paul left Facebook [13:03] How Paul came back to comedy [14:51] Feeling compelled to do comedy [17:37] Taking a high-level view [20:22] Not keeping still [21:59] What work really is [24:55] The most surprising thing Paul has learned [28:43] One thing Paul would like to change [29:58] What’s next for Paul? Brand is everything! Whether in your personal brand or your business brand, defining yourself to your audience is vital. You have to clarify who you are and how you want to be viewed, along with identifying your strengths and weaknesses. We are diving deep in today’s show in learning why your brand is a reflection of you. Thalia Toha is a brand and business strategist for busy entrepreneurs looking to more strategically manage their business and grow their brand. Thalia is currently launching her website, where she shares practical techniques for entrepreneurs looking to get their brand strategically positioned without selling their souls to the expectations of social media. Unlike most brand experts, Thalia does not believe that social media is the be-all and end-all. In her free time, she loves exploring new food trends. Becoming a brand expert What are the brands that stand out in your mind? We can all think of certain brands that have a catchy logo, well-known tagline, or an unforgettable spokesperson. Thalia explains that her path to becoming a brand expert happened organically. Through her work in construction, architecture, and real estate, she was introduced to many national brands. She established relationships with executives and gained momentum through one-on-one work on their business strategy. She says that it’s the people attached to the brand names that make the difference because the brand is a reflection of the person behind the brand. TWEET: “Honesty is a very important currency.” #chasingdreams Defining yourself How would you define yourself? The question isn’t an easy one to answer, but it’s the foundation of Thalia’s work as a brand expert. She describes the three-step process she uses with her clients. The first step is flash-lighting, which means you look to those who know you and see you regularly. Get feedback and information about who you are and what you need to do. The second step is highlighting, in which you look at the feedback received and highlight the aspects of yourself that you most want to display. Thalia says we shouldn’t overlook highlighting our weaknesses because they are the things that make us unique and different. The third step is spotlighting, in which we focus on others, what we have to offer them, and how we can help them be better. TWEET: Just because you CAN do all things doesn’t mean you SHOULD do all things. #chasingdreams When a weakness isn’t a weakness Do you view your weaknesses in a negative light? Thalia says you have to identify and know your weaknesses, but that you shouldn't keep them hidden or be embarrassed about them. A weakness is only a matter of perspective. What you might view as a weakness in yourself might be something that others see in you as a strength.  TWEET: ”Just start. Don’t wait until things are perfect. Leadership--it holds such power. It can be used from one extreme to the other in lifting someone to the highest level or tearing them down to the lowest low. We hear a lot about leadership, but we don’t hear much about the role that emotions play in leadership. We are diving into this topic today with someone who has wisdom to share.  Kingsley Grant is a national and international motivational speaker, leadership consultant, trainer, licensed psychotherapist, adjunct professor, podcaster, and published author. His newest book is The Emotelligent Leader: Succeed Where Others Failed. Kingsley’s focus is on helping business and team leaders create environments that motivate, engage, and inspire people to do great work at all levels, which ultimately affects the bottom line. Kingsley is a contributing writer for the Huffington Post, Addicted2Success, Thrive Global, and The Goodman Project.  It’s never too late Is age holding you back from chasing a dream? Kingsley says it’s never too late in life to do what you want to do. He proved it by going to graduate school later in life, even though he was the oldest student in the classroom. Many successful people who have become household names accomplished their greatest feats in midlife years or later. It’s normal to have a fear of failure, but by the midlife years, people have more wisdom and knowledge about life. You can “get there” faster if you’re older.  TWEET: Emotions drive everything we do. #chasingdreams Succeeding as a leader Who are you leading? Many people are tempted to think they aren’t leaders, but there is always someone looking up to you or watching your life. Kingsley explains that a thermostatic leader gauges the temperature of those they are leading and sets the temperature for everyone. It’s important that a leader shows empathy and builds relationships with the people they lead. The key is to be a vulnerable leader and act human. A leader can’t be resistant to vulnerability or see it as a weakness. TWEET: Don’t be afraid to launch into your dreams in midlife. You know better and can get there faster. #chasingdreams The next generation of leaders How do we change the perspective on leadership? Kingsley sees his book as the impetus to create a movement. He wants to get people to buy into the idea of being an emotelligent leader who will recognize, understand, and manage emotions in ways to become more skilled at relationships and making judgments. It takes education and training for those who are willing to take Kingsley’s message to heart, live it, and spread it far and wide.  TWEET: ”Your dream won’t happen overnight. MC Vikram grew up in a very traditional, South Indian (specifically Malayalee) household where education and church were emphasized greatly. He developed a love for comedy at an early age and decided to take the risk, step out of his cultural comfort zone, and create his own material. Fear of how his content would be received led him to create anonymously, so he could just step away if the reaction wasn’t what he wanted. His leap of faith was worth it as his songs circulated around the world and became extremely popular, changing his life forever. “Welcome to India” Are you afraid to open yourself up to criticism? MC created the parody song, “Welcome to India,” back in 2002, which was the pre-social media generation and an entirely different world. Now, he’s making a comeback with a new generation. His comedy is something he loves doing, not just for himself, but to bring laughter and happiness to others. If you think about your next step too much, then you open yourself up to “analysis paralysis.” MC says that not everything you do will be a success, and the moment you put something into the world, you open yourself up to criticism. The key is to keep going. TWEET: “Stop chasing money and start chasing happiness.” #chasingdreams Outside the box Are you comfortable in stepping “outside the box”? MC says that every culture has its expected norms, but Indian culture especially has strict expectations for achievement. His decision to use comedy, stereotypical accents, and rap music to highlight Indian culture was definitely outside the box of these cultural norms. Even though “Welcome to India” was clean, catchy, and something Indian kids could be proud of, MC had to endure his share of criticism. His intention was never to bring a negative light to Indian heritage, but to step out and take a risk with the talents God has given him. He believes that sharing your talents can lead to great things! TWEET: “You have to think about failure as part of the formula for success.” #chasingdreams Enjoy the failure! Are you afraid of failure? MC wishes that people knew how to take baby steps in accomplishing their goals and didn’t dumb down the capabilities that they have. The fear of stepping outside of a comfort zone and the fear of failure keep many people in professions that they think are safe and secure, but they aren’t finding happiness. Failure is part of success, and it doesn’t define you! Stop fearing failure, take the steps forward, and enjoy the risk! As we wrap up Season 2 and look toward a new season, there will be inevitable changes as we move forward. One of those will be incorporating bonus material from our Behind-the-Scenes interviews into each show to help you get to know each guest a little better. As a prelude to this change, I’m beginning today’s show by answering some sample questions. You’ll hear what I wished I had learned in school, the number one item on my bucket list, who I would choose for TIME magazine’s person of the year, and what idea of mine might make $1 million one day.  Speak up! Are you a “feedback” kind of person? So many people aren’t! They think that they are just one voice that can’t possibly make a difference, but that is SO wrong. The very fact that this podcast has progressed to Episode 200 is a testament to the power of positive feedback. Let someone know if their creation in any form has helped, encouraged, informed, or inspired you. It’s so important, and it may be just the word they need to keep going. You may not think you can make a difference, but, trust me, having “feedback people” in your corner is a godsend.  TWEET: There have been moments when I didn’t think anyone was listening to the podcast. #chasingdreams Motivation, not money Have you ever thought about what it takes to secure guests for a podcast? It’s not an easy thing to do! I noticed (on our way to #200) that I had an abundance of guests talking about their businesses, and I realized that that’s not what I intend the show to be about. I don’t want to have a guest simply for the sake of filling a spot on the show, but I want to feature people who are chasing their dreams---not just chasing money. One of the key components in chasing your dream is not to let yourself get distracted by the long-term vision or the successes that others may enjoy. Chasing YOUR dream means owning YOUR journey--however long that may be.  Tiffany Southerland is a lawyer by training and a change agent at heart. As a career confidence coach and facilitator, she helps students and professionals leverage their stories and strengths so they can maximize their career success. Tiffany also hosts “How Does She Do It?” which is a podcast dedicated to sharing practical advice on the intersection of faith, personal growth, and professional development. Tiffany has been a featured TEDx speaker and has served as a panelist, moderator, speaker, and facilitator on topics including professional development, diversity and inclusion, career transitions, overcoming trauma, and balancing personal values and career goals. Feeling the frustration What drives your dream chase? Tiffany thinks back to a time when she was frustrated with her podcast back in March 2018. She wasn’t receiving any feedback and honestly didn’t think anyone was even listening. She questioned why she was even putting forth the effort, but then she realized she needed to shift her mindset. Her long-term vision stayed the same, but she had to change the way she viewed her target and the way she measured her success. Her advice is to adjust your lens, which can shift your perspective. Your vision is what keeps driving you. TWEET: Your imperfections do not detract from your message the way it does inside your head. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams Take the risk Are you a risk taker? Tiffany explains that progress requires a certain amount of risk, which is something she learned from a mentor. To grow, we have to risk failure---and those are the moments in which we learn. We have to take chances. Not taking risks is a way of hiding yourself from what might happen on the other side of the risk. Fear hardly ever materializes the way we build it up in our minds. Tiffany says that the reward will outweigh the risk. TWEET: There are people NOT doing what you are doing, which means you are already brave. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams Your vision requires a choice Are you ready to choose between your opportunities? Tiffany explains that a talented person will always have interesting opportunities, but at some point, a choice will have to be made. One thing or the other will begin to suffer. Tiffany recognizes that a decision will have to be made at some time in her future about which path she will follow, but one thing to guard against is comparing your path to someone else’s. Others may have success that we see, but we don’t see all the struggles and obstacles they have endured. She says, “We have to be mindful of creating our blueprint based on someone else’s building.” TWEET: You have to run YOUR own race. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Take one step every single day and don’t let the brightness of your vision distract you.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:09] Catching up with Tiffany [3:28] When you feel like detouring from your dream [5:55] Maintaining your fire [9:22] How to receive a compliment [12:01] Stepping outside your comfort zone [15:45] The fear of low results [19:52] The impact of your authenticity [21:41] Someone who has inspired Tiffany [23:43] A mentor’s advice [27:20] Don’t measure yourself by someone else [31:19] You don’t see everything [34:35] What’s next for Tiffany [36:10] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Find Tiffany on social media: https://twitter.com/tiffsouth https://www.instagram.com/tiffsouth/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffsouth/ Find the Behind-the-Scenes interview with Tiffany:  https://youtu.be/qWE3c215-Uw Find our Fundathon Donation Page:  http://aimeej21.com/donate[ TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: You can’t make progress without risking something. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams TWEET: I’m grateful and humbled to be able to chase my dream while balancing my career. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams TWEET: You need to be thankful and receive the compliments that come your way. @tiffsouth #chasingdreams

Veronica loves sharing everything she’s learned in her lettering journey with others through her Instagram and blog.   How Crayligraphy began   You are probably wondering, “What is Crayligraphy?” Colin explains it simply as “the art of stylistically writing with a marker.” You don’t have to look far to find it, feel its hypnotic power, and realize its popularity. From a blog that he started about 10 years ago to document his progress in learning hand lettering and calligraphy, he progressed to Instagram posts, tutorials, and workshops that feature what he calls, “Crazy Crayola Calligraphy”---”Crayligraphy.” The feedback he received led to requests to teach others his craft, so he started teaching and doing workshops. Now he has a website and a huge demand from people who want to learn from him, so there are Crayligraphy workshops all over the country, along with his trained team of “Crayligraphers,” like Veronica who hosts workshops in their cities. TWEET: Crayligraphy is the art of stylistically writing with a marker.” @crayligraphy #chasingdreams The creative community If you’ve ever undertaken a creative endeavor, then you know the hesitancy most people feel in sharing their work. Colin and Veronica say that this is an important step in your journey because everyone starts out at the beginning. This community as supportive and focused on helping people improve. Colin and Veronica see Crayligraphy expanding into other creative endeavors also, with a book and their own special markers coming in the not-too-distant future! They emphasize that anyone can learn this art form with consistent practice of a mere 20 minutes/day, and an art and design background is NOT required! Everyone dreams of taking their passion and turning it into something profitable. It’s the situation in which your “work” becomes so much more than work. Such is the story of today’s guest. Listen in to hear how she turned a childhood hobby into a serious profession. Tamara Thompson founded Serious Take Productions in 2012 and has built her creative video agency nationwide. She received her degree in filmmaking and pursued her passion for bringing stories to life in a creative, emotional, and impactful way. Tamara has won awards for her documentary films produced for large corporations such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Safeway, and Gabriel Cosmetics to working with musicians from top TV reality shows like American Idol and NBC’s The Voice. She is known for her attention to detail, her creative vision to help you pull the right story for your brand, and helping people gain the confidence to Broadcast Your Authority with video productions. Tamara enjoys cultivating relationships in the entrepreneurial space to provide meaningful introductions to influencers who are giving back. She lights up knowing each video her team has produced is meant to create a bigger impact and drive results by building rapport with an ideal clientele. Turning passion into profit What did you love doing when you were a kid? Tamara started playing around with her dad’s camcorder when she was about 7, and video has been a huge part of her life ever since. She figured out how to turn her passion into profit and found the strategies and systems she needed to put everything in place for her production company. She became a silly YouTuber in 2005 but wanted to be seen as a serious filmmaker. She went away from YouTube for a while but now helps her clients use it in “not-so-silly” ways. Film school taught Tamara how to make inspiring and emotional documentaries that focused on stories of people, along with epic brand-story trailers that share the story of her clients’ brands. TWEET: Pause your life and take some time for yourself. @seriouspro #chasingdreams Commonalities among people What does it take to find someone’s story? Most of what Tamara does involves sharing people’s stories. She believes she is gifted in knowing when someone isn’t sharing enough of the back story. Some people have gone through traumatic experiences, and these are the stories that inspire others. Most of us fear being vulnerable in sharing our past, but telling our stories leads to authenticity and helps others see your WHY. Tamara has become experienced in asking the right questions that will dig deep and reveal the hidden parts of the story. TWEET: I’ve become very purposeful in finding people who are in alignment with my mission. @seriouspro #chasingdreams Manifesting your destiny How much control do you have over your destiny? Tamara says that you have to take action by putting the vision out there in the future and create the action path to get there. Focusing on what you want to be a part of will help you set the intention. Having connections and building relationships are part of the pathway to success. She says to trust your intuition about who you need to connect and collaborate with. We all go further when we connect with others. TWEET: What is it about your story that will resonate with others? @seriouspro #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: If something gets in your way, find your way around it. Some of the most beautiful efforts in chasing dreams happen when you use your dream to help motivate others achieve theirs. Such is the story of today’s guest. Her dream has been a lifelong passion for basketball, and now that passion is the fuel that’s helping other young women become successful athletes. Aquillin Hayes is a Harlem, NY native, University of New Haven women’s basketball standout, 2x Defensive Player of the Year, East Region Player of the Year, Championship MVP, UNH Athlete of the Year, and Finalist for Division II National Player of the Year. She played two seasons in El Salvador and led the league in total rebounds and points. Although Aquillin is still pursuing her dreams of professional basketball, she is using her talents to help others as CEO and Founder of IPF (Infinite Player Fulfillment) Academy. Taking it to a higher level What does it take to motivate you? Aquillin was a standout basketball player as a sophomore in high school when opposing teams pinpointed her weakness and exploited it to force her to have bad game after bad game. She realized that she would have to rise above, put in the work, and overcome her weakness to be the dominating player she was used to being. She refused to allow any opponent to have that kind of control over her career and her success. Being “offended” became her motivation to train harder and elevate her game to a higher level. TWEET: “Rise above, put in the work and overcome your weakness in order to dominate again.” @que_hayes #chasingdreams Giving back Why would someone in Aquillin’s position take the time to start an academy for younger players? She says she saw that the level of competition was changing and young players needed to be trained to not give up. Many players feel defeated and don’t have a lack of urgency, but Aquillin says that young women need to demand more of themselves. It’s hard enough in a man’s world, but women athletes have to develop a culture of the level of intensity that doesn’t leave options for failure. The three pillars of IPF Academy are skill development, fitness, and nutrition; this is the message that Aquillin preaches to her young players. TWEET: I can work hard to be the better player, but I look for every opportunity to become the better person. @que_hayes #chasingdreams Feedback and criticism We all like to get feedback on our efforts, right? Aquillin says she has received both positive and negative reactions to her IPF Academy. Some people are very supportive of what she’s doing and the emphasis on the three pillars. There has also been some opposition, though, because some people claim that this system won’t work with inner-city kids. The critics don’t understand why she has a vested interest in helping the younger athletes. The IPF athletes should be the ones to decide whether this endeavor is working! Aquillin vows to keep going because she loves to prove to people that it isn’t just luck that has gotten her to where she is today. It’s always a thrill to catch up with a former guest, especially one who has been super-successful in chasing dreams and achieving goals. Today’s guest appeared on Episode 18--way back in 2015. Let’s check in and see what’s new! From the chauffeur seat to the C-suite, Tony Woodall has used his Goal Getting program to go from 50 to 32 in waist size and is in better shape now than he was in his 30’s. He’s become a master at achieving his goals and helping his clients do the same. As a coach, speaker, consultant, and the author of 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement, Tony proves that you’re never too old to achieve your goals and dreams. This host of the Goal Getting podcast has inspired and helped people reach their high-performance goals, and he’s worked with realtors, lenders, bankers, and other corporations to reach their potential and beyond. Making a commitment Where have you made the biggest commitment? Like many people, Tony has battled weight gain for much of his life. Within the past year, he’s dropped from 300 lbs. to 185 and increased his level of physical fitness and overall health. Why has the weight loss process been different this time? Tony explains that the most significant difference has been the commitment he made to himself, most notably in writing a commitment letter, a promissory note of sorts, that he wrote to himself. The motivation for the letter was diabetes, high blood pressure, and other problems as his 60th birthday approached. He says that he wanted to take the money he spent on medications and use it for traveling, having fun, and enjoying life. The key was simple, although not easy: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” TWEET: “Eat less, exercise more, and overcome bad habits.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams Every little step is progress Does achieving a goal bring you happiness? We all know the joy and satisfaction that come from accomplishments. Tony acknowledged this happiness every time he met small goals along the way of his journey to better health. He says that the ability to grow and see progress is a need that humans have. Every little step toward a goal is a positive moment that deserves a reward. Seeing those small steps gives you the momentum to keep moving forward. Tony was even able to start running, which was something he never thought he could do. He says, “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” TWEET: “Once you realize what you CAN do, that’s when things change.” @TonyWCMB #chasingdreams No more excuses Do you make excuses as to why you can’t accomplish specific goals? Tony was used to making excuses as to why he couldn’t do certain things because he was fat and overweight. As a result of chasing his weight loss and fitness goals, Tony now has the motivation to step out toward accomplishing other goals in his life. One example of that is in personal relationships. Tony now has the mentality to try something new as a ripple effect of the dreams he has already chased.  Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Set your goal. Write it down. How many times do you take the “glass half empty” approach? What would happen if you adopted an abundance mindset instead of dwelling on what you lack? Today’s guest drops truth bombs left and right about how your mindset affects your accomplishments. L’areal Lipkins is a success strategist, vision board extraordinaire, and author of the brand new book, A Woman With Vision: How to Fulfill the Goals and Dreams God Has Given You. After 10 years of doing sales training and consulting, L’areal left her corporate job to teach women how to elevate their mindset so they can actually execute their goals. An abundance mindset Do you love to play the victim? Unfortunately, our culture seems to give a sense of power in being the victim. When I play the victim, I can blame someone else, and I don’t have to take ownership of my actions, my results, and my life. L’areal says, “You can’t be the victim and win at the same time.” We all have a “before,” and L’areal teaches that we have to shift our mindset to get past that moment in time to get what we desire. Don’t live in the victim mentality! TWEET: If I can blame someone else, then that means I don’t have to change. #chasingdreams A vision board is not a dream board Have you made a vision board? L’areal says that there is a huge difference between a vision board and a dream board. There’s nothing wrong with dreams, but your vision board should show what you are committing to do NOW. It’s a road map of things to be checked off. She says we shouldn’t rely on social media for our definition of success. In spite of social media, it’s a challenge to maintain our perspective. She explains the four components of a vision board: clarity, planning, execution, and mindset. TWEET: I teach a different process to create a vision board, along with a different mindset. #chasingdreams L’areal’s Aha moment Have you had Aha moments in your life? When L’areal was going through a personal spiral, she came to the realization that who she was at THAT moment was not the person capable of accomplishing the goals she had. Personality traits, tendencies, and habits may have to change if you’re serious about reaching your goals. There is a constant evolving of who we are as our beliefs and behaviors align with the steps we need to take to “get there.” TWEET: If your goals are random, your life will be random. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Get clear about what you absolutely want, not what you think you deserve. To continue highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month, today’s show shines the spotlight on someone who is truly making a difference in the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health of many, many people. Her mission field is the homeless population, those to whom she refers as the “hopeful.” Her unselfishness and compassion are evident in the way she cares for the underserved and needy with her unique brand of fierce love. Cynthia Brinkley Scott is the founder and organizer of Love the HopeFul, an organization that provides for the homeless, or “hopeful.” The mission is to give back to the community, including providing a free Farmer’s Market for the homeless on the third Saturday of each month. The market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, protein, bottled water, baked goods, haircuts, books, and more----all for free. In this episode, we talk about how this mission came about and how Cynthia became involved with what has become her life’s passion. Be grateful for everything Do you believe that the impossible is possible? Cynthia has seen miracle after miracle in securing food and goods for the homeless. She secured a partnership with Costco through a friend, and she was blown away with the volume of donated goods. She says she would’ve been happy with a case of water, but she received cartload upon cartload of goods. Cynthia operates on the principle that if you’re grateful for everything, then God will bless you in abundance, and this mantra has proven itself true over and over again. Now, she is usually able to bless up to 8 organizations in one day, just from what they receive in donated goods from Costco.   TWEET: My life purpose is to motivate and inspire people of all languages all over the world. #chasingdreams Motivating and inspiring people Are you still chasing the dreams you had when you were 18? Most of us have big changes to our dreams since the age of 18---but not Cynthia. When she was 18, she wrote out her life’s desire, which was to motivate and inspire people all over the world--people of all languages. This has become her mission and purpose statement, and she has always been geared toward giving back. When she prayed for God to help her, He said, “When you need help, go help someone else.” This has become another mantra by which she lives day to day. She shares about an intense personal crisis that resulted in many tears, which Cynthia views as a way to water the path to her future.  TWEET: Love always comes first. #chasingdreams Find a better word Have you thought much about the negative words we use every day? Cynthia refuses to call the homeless anything but “hopeful,” because it’s her nature to always try to think of a more positive word for negative things. She says there is always a “better word” we can use. The word “hopeful” provides Cynthia with many opportunities to give back to the community. In our everyday life, we can flip the negative connotation to a positive perspective---and make a huge difference. How can your example of chasing your dreams help someone else? It all comes down to the motivation we feel when we see someone else overcome challenges and succeed. My guest is here to tell us why the world needs YOUR success! Jonathan Jones is a social entrepreneur, best-selling author, and TEDx speaker. Jonathan serves and supports students and millennial entrepreneurs who believe in self-investing, monetizing their message, and leaving a legacy. He has been featured on CBS News and has spoken to thousands of students ranging from elementary school to college. Jonathan is the host of the Speak Your Success podcast and the author of Process: 14 Surprisingly Simple Behaviors to Skyrocket Millennials to Success. Dream it and obtain it! Are your dreams unreachable? Jonathan would absolutely say NO! His message to students is, “If your dream is big enough for you to dream it, then there’s a way for you to obtain it!” He teaches that God doesn’t give us dreams and desires without the abilities AND capabilities to walk them out. Sometimes we have to remove the fears and the people who hold us back (sometimes that can be our parents!) so we can get to the other side of what God has for us. TWEET: “If your dream is big enough for you to dream, then there’s a way for you to obtain it!” @jonathanjSpeaks #chasingdreams Tell your story Can your success give hope and confidence to others? Jonathan says that there are millions of people who need to see your victory. Hearing your story gives other people courage, and living in your victory helps others chase their dreams. This is why social media has the far-reaching impact that it does, and why people watch so many motivational videos. People want to feel good and be on the winning team. When they see other people achieve, they want to emulate and follow their example. Bare your soul and help others learn from you. TWEET: “There are millions of people who need to see your victory.” @jonathanjSpeaks #chasingdreams Try new things Are you afraid to try new things? Some people live in constant fear of the unknown, so they never take the risk to try something new. When you try new things, you’re forced to cancel out the fear that holds you back in doing something unknown that might turn out to be a great opportunity. Figure out what you’re good at, and keep yourself exposed to the ideas you have about new things and the future, even if they aren’t grandiose ambitions. Many of us battle with anxiety and its symptoms, but what’s most important is how we respond, and how we learn to cope. Do you use anxiety as an excuse for all the things you can’t do? Today’s guest shares his personal story with vulnerability, openness, and honesty about how he’s refused to let anxiety stop him! In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, my little brother is here, hoping his experiences can help others.  Royce M is a 2nd-year seminarian at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, NY. Royce received his undergraduate degree in Information Systems at the University of Maryland, University College, (UMUC). Originally from the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, Royce has always been involved in church youth activities. In his free time, Royce likes to run and play sports, and he loves anything related to technology. Royce has always valued stepping out of his comfort zone, stepping into his fear, and working hard to conquer it. Childhood struggles Did you have any challenges to overcome in childhood? When Royce was just a baby, his parents noticed that he was growing at an unusually fast rate for his age. Doctors suspected a brain tumor, but further tests revealed a huge blood clot that was pressing on his pituitary gland, affecting his growth. After corrective surgery, Royce led a fairly normal life, but he had to wear glasses, worked slower in school than others, and was diagnosed with ADHD. These difficulties led to intense bullying in elementary school, which took a lot of effort to get through, with the help of a few close friends who helped create a safe space for Royce. TWEET: There’s no other way to say it but that being bullied sucks. #chasingdreams Hats off to guidance counselors! Have you thanked a guidance counselor today? Probably not. Their work in schools is vitally important, but it’s a thankless job in many cases. When Royce saw his school guidance counselor, she was able to help him significantly. She had a toy dragon that she encouraged Royce to tell about his thoughts and feelings. She taught him that it was OK to feel his feelings and that he wasn’t alone. Ironically, on Royce’s regular summer trips to India, he met a dog that became his buddy---the one he could tell his thoughts and feelings. This practice (and it was the same dog year after year) helped Royce “clear the slate” each summer to prepare for a new school year when he returned to the US.  TWEET: Finding a way to share your thoughts and feelings can help clear your mind and prepare you for bigger things. #chasingdreams Learning to ask for help How good are you at asking for help? Most of us are reluctant to admit that we need help, and sometimes we don’t know who to ask. Royce was motivated to finish his bachelor’s degree, even though it took several years of going down a crazy path. He had the dream of going to seminary but knew it couldn’t happen until he finished his undergrad degree. The game changer for Royce was admitting that he needed help and being willing to ask for it. He took proactive steps in seeing the doctor about his ADHD and asking the college guidance counselor about available accommodations because of his diagnosis. The bottom line is that everything improved for Royce when he asked for the help he needed. TWEET: When you recognize that you need help and ask for the help you need, your life will dramatically improve. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Ask yourself if you would still love what you do, whether or not you struggled to do it.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:15] Royce’s childhood surgery [2:50] Being held back [5:27] Royce’s experience with being bullied [8:35] The benefit of having a safe space [10:02] How Royce addressed his ADHD [16:05] Why Royce went off his ADHD medication [17:59] Middle school: the peak of bullying and ADHD symptoms [25:15] How high school was different because of a mindset shift [29:05} An unconventional path in college [31:24] Why Royce had to leave college [37:00] Royce’s passion for going to seminary [40:35] Royce’s fears that were in his head [46:09] Where Royce is today [49:15] Royce’s battle wounds [50:35] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Find the Behind-the-Scenes interview for more with Royce on YouTube! Sometimes chasing your dream requires you to walk away from the path you thought was laid out before you and make a leap and take a risk. If you allow others to tell you what’s right for your life, then chances are that you’ll encounter anxiety. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re talking to someone who has learned how to find peace and purpose in life. Jake Heilbrunn is a TEDx speaker and bestselling author of Off the Beaten Trail, endorsed by multiple NYT bestsellers. He has spoken across the US and internationally to 12,000+ people about replacing anxiety with purpose and creating a career you love. He is the co-founder of The Idea Collective, which helps thought leaders get their message out through speaking engagements and TEDx talks. Conquering anxiety When do you experience anxiety? When Jake went to college at age 18, he broke out with hives and rashes due to severe anxiety. Doctors couldn’t help, and he became depressed and questioned everything about his life. Jake left school with a backpack and flew to Guatemala, where he taught English and lived in the jungle for several months. When he learned mindfulness, meditation, peace, and purpose, he experienced a 180-degree shift. He soon learned that many young people are battling anxiety, so Jake felt the calling to help others through his speaking opportunities and writing his book. TWEET: Anxiety was debilitating, so once I found out what helped mine, I knew I could help others with the same thing. #chasingdreams Social media How much time do you spend on social media each day? Statistics show that American teenagers spend an average of 4 hours daily on social media! It’s the place where dangerous comparisons are made, and each one of us can play a part in changing the narrative. Social media can be used for good, but we all fall into the trap of viewing others’ lives as “perfect,” because of the selective glimpses we get. We have to remember that we see what people want us to see, and much of it isn’t real. We can see the same post as thousands of people, but we may have a different perception. Jake explains how our brains can be changed because of the influence of social media. TWEET: Social media plays a huge role in the lives of American teenagers, and it is changing their brains. #chasingdreams Taking a leap How do you know which path to follow? Jake didn’t know what career path he would follow after college, but he saw someone’s Instagram post about a meaningful trip to Mexico, and he decided to pay $1000 for a trip. Jake says the trip “called out to me.” As if the universe reinforced his decision, he won $1000 in an unrelated book marketing contest the next day. On his trip to Guatemala, he met the person who later became his business partner. Sometime later, they started The Idea Collective to help people develop TEDx talks. Their company has grown to a team of 13 people. TWEET: Knowing you’re not alone means everything. #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:03] What’s happened since Jake’s last appearance [2:58] Jake’s journey to mental health [5:23] How Jake’s perception has changed [10:53] Positivity that can be negative [12:56] What influences you the most [16:05] Jake’s company and his role [24:31] Following a gut instinct [28:56] A place of positivity   RESOURCES MENTIONED: Jake is previously featured on Episode 63 Jake on Facebook Jake on Instagram Jake on LinkedIn Jake’s Website Jake’s TEDx--How to Replace Anxiety with Purpose Jake’s Jack Canfield Interview Jake’s Behind-the-Scenes interview TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: I felt a calling to help others come through anxiety and find their purpose. #chasingdreams TWEET: Not knowing what you want to do is OK. #chasingdreams TWEET: One of our core values is radical transparency. #chasingdreams

Sometimes all it takes are the right words from the right person to boost your courage and give you permission to take radical steps. Such is the experience of today’s guest, a dream chaser whose path has been anything but ordinary. Diana Cheruvil is a dynamic and goofy human whose life has been a series of fortunate events. She’s passionate about connecting with people, understanding global perspectives with a focus on local community, and striving for the greater good. She loves to build and nurture relationships in ways that bring others’ most authentic selves to the forefront. Diana’s career spans 12 years of diverse communications and marketing experience that has taken her from Detroit to NYC to South America, and back to Detroit. She has an insatiable appetite for travel, loves her super cool friends and family, gives great hugs, and has very nice hair. Following the shiny, bright object When do you know it’s time to pivot? For Diana, it was clear. She studied pharmacy at the University of Michigan, and even though she loved the subject area, her heart was not into the academics. It was clear that a pivot was in order, and her parents made the decision for her to leave college and come home. Knowing this experience would NOT be the one to stop her, she explored, settling on communications and marketing for her next endeavor. For her, living and working in NYC was always the “shiny, bright object at the end of the tunnel,” so she ran toward it. TWEET: If you fail, you fail - but fail forward. #chasingdreams Taking a chance Is it WHAT you know, or WHO you know? Diana moved to NYC (kinda on a whim), and her dreams became a reality. She says we need to realize that we don’t always have to follow a conventional path when it comes to jobs. Often it comes down to the connections you make that can be the most powerful and most impactful. Being backed by people who support you and believe in you makes ALL the difference. Creating strong relationships can help you get to where you’re going.  TWEET: “It is NEVER too late. There is so much benefit in taking a leap because you never know what will happen.” #chasingdreams What Diana learned from NYC and South America Can you look back at steps in your life and recount the lessons learned? Diana had many lessons to learn as she worked her way up from an intern to be the head of a department. She learned that one person CAN change things and make a big difference. Spending almost 10 years in NYC left her stagnant and tired, and she was dissatisfied and burned out. Her dad advised her to have courage and be bold enough to give herself permission to change her life---so she did. She spent time in South America teaching English and traveling around. This time helped her change her perspective to one of desiring a simpler life and realizing that she is capable of SO much more than what she ever imagined.  TWEET: It’s never about what you know, but it’s about the connections you make. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”It is NEVER too late. Can a young person be the voice of motivation and empowerment in chasing dreams? Yes! Join me for an inspiring conversation with a dream chaser who is already making an impact and helping others find their purpose. Marcus Roberts-DeLoach is a 22-year-old young adult empowerment writer, speaker, business owner, and radio talk program host from Philadelphia, PA. He is a former full-time student-athlete at Ohio State University-Lima and will soon be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. Marcus is the author of Bigger Than You: What is Your Purpose? Through his work, he expresses how important it is to help others live a purposeful life. He is a firm believer that current situations don’t define final destinations. His advice to people is never to let people tell you what you can’t do or that your dreams are impossible to achieve. Marcus believes that putting in the work makes anything possible for anyone. His vision goes far behind himself, and he believes that empowering other people is the key to truly changing the world. Finding his gifts What are your gifts? Marcus always knew that his gifts were basketball, talking to people, and making them smile. He started out in athletic training, then moved to business, and later on to communications. Early on, Marcus developed the mindset that he wanted to own his own business, and he knew the sky would be the limit if he concentrated on growing a better version of himself. It didn’t take long for Marcus to turn into a personal development guru because he knew it would be the key to a better future. TWEET: Building your dream is hard, but being broke is also hard. @IamMarcusRD #chasingdreams Finding a balance Is everything more difficult when you’re young? Not really, but finding a balance in life and finding yourself can be more challenging when you’re young. Marcus admits that his concentration is not as good because he feels “all over the place.” He realized that he had to commit to his dream with consistency and learn to say NO to some people. The average 22-year-old isn’t doing the things that Marcus is. He looks forward to what his decisions will look like at age 25, 30, 35, 40--and so on. TWEET: Average people wait, and winners create. @IamMarcusRD #chasingdreams Finding mentors If you don’t have a starting point, how do you figure out your gifts? Marcus says the first step is to find a mentor. Find someone whom you want to be like. We usually frown upon copying what someone else is doing, but it’s not wrong to copy someone else if you are molding and growing yourself. Two mentors that Marcus learns from every day are Jim Rohn and Steve Harvey.  Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Nothing is as hard as it seems. Who doesn’t love a good story? Whether you’re reading, watching, or listening---you can be drawn in before you realize it. My guest today knows the power and magic of storytelling---and he’s sharing some of his secrets with us.   Shannon Cason has told stories all over the country with The Moth, Snap Judgment, and his own podcasts, Homemade Stories, and The Trouble. He is the chief educator for the Brutally Honest Storytelling Workshop Series and has worked with several companies, including WBEZ, WDET, and Spotify. He is originally from Detroit, and he’s gracious enough to come on the show to share his knowledge and experience as a dream chaser.   The magic of storytelling   Can you feel it? I’m talking about the moment when you hear a story, and you know whether someone is “putting on a performance,” using a gimmick, or being honest and open. The first thing Shannon noticed about storytellers is that people are drawn to you when you’re authentic and are yourself, especially when polarizing issues are involved. People simply relate more to truth and real life, and we’re drawn to that in stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the story or the experience. That’s the magic of storytelling.    TWEET: People are drawn to stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the experience. #chasingdreams   Why podcasting?   Have you ever had money that burned a hole in your pocket? Shannon’s first iPhone came as the result of a gambling windfall, and he started listening to podcasts. He had the great idea to mix his love of storytelling with developing his own podcast. He wasn’t satisfied to just “talk,” but wanted full-fledged productions with music and sound effects. Never thinking of this creative endeavor--or any artistic effort--as something that could sustain him financially, he realized that there would be no other job that would bring him as much fulfillment as telling stories and that he could make a living while sharing his stories and chasing his dreams.   TWEET: No other job could bring as much fulfillment as telling stories and chasing his dreams. #chasingdreams   Finding YOUR voice   In storytelling or podcasting, how do you find YOUR voice? You may start out by following and imitating someone else, but Shannon says you have to evolve from that beginning and add your unique style. The beautiful part is when you figure things out and find YOUR voice. You can watch and learn from others, but then put the content through your own filter of truth and authenticity. Find something that isn’t what everyone else is doing.    TWEET: You have to find your own voice. #chasingdreams   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Find an example of who you’d like to be and backtrack that example to see where they started. Seeing where they came from should inspire you.”   See the behind-the-scenes interview with Shannon for more! www.aimeej21.com/youtube     OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE:   [:10] How Shannon and I met in 2016 [1:25] What captured Shannon about storytelling [2:50] How storytelling is brutally honest and refreshing [6:58] Shannon’s storytelling aspirations [9:05] From storytelling to podcasting [11:20] Feeling financial pressures and fears [13:50] If people didn’t pursue their higher calling [17:00] Why we “trap” ourselves into living others’ lifestyles [21:19] “Outside the box” thinking [22:54] How Shannon put his own spin on his work [25:15] How his children are following in his footsteps [29:13] One surprising outcome [31:49] What’s coming up next for Shannon [33:16] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED:   www.aimeej21.com/episode187   www.aimeej21.com/donate   Consider donating to help the show!   www.shannoncason.com  Find out more about Shannon and Brutally Honest Storytelling

Can you still chase your dreams if you aren’t sure about how to move forward? Yes! Today’s guest shares his personal experience with learning to be still and focus on the next step. Brian Drury is a return guest from Episode 44. We’re checking in with Brian to see what’s new in his life and his dream chase. He’s the founder of Overcoming Graduation, the creator and host of the Overcoming Graduation podcast, a professional speaker, coach, and author of the #1 Amazon bestseller, The First Step. Through his work, he helps teach young adults everything he wished he had known about habits and mindset to help them create their dream lives, starting today. One of Brian’s recent speeches went viral and has reached over 14.7 million people around the world, and is now featured as one of Goalcast’s Top Inspiring Videos. Brian also has a passion for travel; he speaks three languages, taught himself to speak Portuguese in just seven months, and has traveled to 17 different countries around the world. Brian wants everyone, young and old, to realize that their dream life is within their reach if they are willing to think differently and take action. Focus on the next small step Do you always know the next step to take? No, there are times when you are in a place of uncertainty. You don’t always have clarity and focus on the next step to take, but you have to move forward in incremental steps to reach bigger goals down the road. Brian hasn’t always had the clarity in business and personal relationships for achieving the success he wanted. He says that even “on the path to somewhere,” you have to be able to find joy along the way. “Life won’t be sunshine and rainbows every single day.” TWEET: You know if you explode and blow up, it’s not going to bring the results you are looking for. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Learning to live in “the medium” Do you live in extremes? Brian admits that living in extremes has been his norm, but he is learning to stay in a healthier, happier “medium.” Even though he teaches self-care, he has had to discipline himself to keep up with that care every day, especially when the stress and busy-ness of life get in the way. Living in “the medium” has helped him take full responsibility in his identity and prompted an honest conversation with his father, which was a big emotional release. TWEET: I’ve lived in extremes for most of my life. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Enjoy today - and tomorrow Is your inner child still there? Brian says we need to be playful and embrace our inner child, but we need moderation in healthy areas and honesty in communication and relationships. We need to cut out bad habits and embrace healthy ones so that we can enjoy the next day in the same way as today. Brian lives by a quote from author Aubrey Marcus: “Don’t enjoy today at the expense of tomorrow.” Brian says we need to make time to play, have fun, and live in the moment. Do you root for the underdog? My guest today pulls for the underdogs of the podcast world---the small, independent podcasters who don’t grab the big sponsorships. Let’s find out what she’s about and how she has made her place in the podcasting arena. Jessica Kupferman is an internet and digital marketing pioneer who helps content creators grow and monetize a loyal, rabid fan base through understanding connection and the power of influence. She has worked on branding and messaging for large corporations such as Comcast, Subaru, as well as with hundreds of bloggers, podcasters, and online entrepreneurs by teaching personality-driven social media and sales strategies. Jessica is the co-host and co-founder of the She Podcasts brand, which currently supports over 10,000 female podcasters, and has a digital marketing reach of over 50,000 content creators. She started a podcast advertising agency, JK Media Agency in 2015, and then sold it in 2017 to pursue her passion for helping independent podcasters to create connection and step into their influence. Currently, Jessica is the head of marketing for Rebel Base Media and loves helping their members prepare for success in podcasting. She’s a busy lady, and I’m happy to welcome Jessica to the show! Creating an authentic organization for women Can men be part of She Podcasts? The answer is no. The group remains loyal to maintaining an authentic organization for women podcasters---a place of familiarity and comfort where women can be themselves. Jessica wants it to be a safe space of relaxation and feels that allowing men to join would take away from that. Even though men have asked to join, she says, “If we let one, then we’d have to let them all!” Every other podcast group out there is available for men to join, so this one will stay different and unique. Jessica’s background in the corporate world was always in jobs in heavily male-dominated fields, so she’s happy to have founded and to be a part of something that offers exclusive support to women. TWEET: Your legacy won’t be your body of work but will be how you make people feel. @jesskupferman Why you can’t advocate for every cause Do you champion the causes you believe in? Most of us love being the advocate and the voice for the things we feel strongly about. The problem is that so many try to champion EVERY cause. You can’t advocate for everything, because you’ll exhaust yourself, and trying to defend every cause makes you a vague person who seems like they don’t know what they really stand for. Wanting to help is NOT enough, because there has to be a connection and a personal incentive. Be who you are. TWEET: You can’t be an advocate for everything all the time. @jesskupferman Focus on the individual Would you sacrifice to help “the little guy”? Jessica really wanted to help small shows monetize their podcasts, but she needed to prove that to her advertisers. Today, she teaches with the Podcast Success Academy and focuses on teaching podcasters how to pitch, grow, and market their podcasts. Jessica shares how she was willing to make sacrifices and changes, which were prompted by the loss of her daughter, a pivotal point in Jessica’s life. She says we need to learn to ask the right questions to figure out who we are. With the prevalence of blended families today, being a stepparent is rarely thought of in a positive light. The truth is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Hold your skepticism until you hear what today’s guest has to say about blended families thriving and creating an atmosphere of love and mutual respect.  Tuniscia Okeke is the author of Empowered Stepmother. In this book, she invites stepmothers on a transformational journey of self-empowerment to regain their voices and discover their identity in a blended family dynamic. The family vlog “Tea with Tuniscia O” gives a candid look inside the love and connection shared between Tuniscia and her stepson, Ike. The vlog journals their family’s victories and strategies to co-parent successfully with Ike’s biological mother. Tuniscia is an avid reader whose most creative thoughts occur while she’s in “couch potato mode.” As a wife and mother of three children, two of whom are adults, Tuniscia’s most cherished moments are family time together at home or on vacation.  Tuniscia’s path Were you a stepchild? Tuniscia was---and then she became a teenage mother at age 18, and then again at age 19. As the mother of two little ones, life hit her hard and fast, and she had to grow up quickly. She became a paralegal for a while and then bought her first house at age 24, an achievement that was unusual in her family. Even though Tuniscia had to be a working mom, she always had a job that was near her children. Looking back today, Tuniscia realizes that her leadership qualities were unique for one so young, and others saw that in her also. TWEET: Too many times, stepmothers want to battle with the biological mother to see who’s more important. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams Becoming a stepmother Does anyone ever aspire to be a stepparent? The answer is probably a NO for most of us. Tuniscia never wanted this role, until she met her future husband, who happened to be the father of an 18-month-old son. It didn't take long for Tuniscia to fall in love with the father AND son, knowing that she wanted to be a positive influence in little Ike's life. Surprisingly, the foreword to Tuniscia's book is written by none other than Danielle, Ike's biological mother. She outlines how Tuniscia has helped her with the struggles to love and accept herself to be a better mom. Today, Tuniscia is Danielle's life coach, helping her rebuild and reinforce her beautiful bond with her son. The book came about as the guide Tuniscia wished she'd had when she went through the darkest days of her struggle in the role of stepmother.  TWEET: I am not his biological mom, but I don’t use the word “step.” I’m here to help. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams Being free to love Have you thought about how a child feels when stepparents don't get along? Tuniscia's stepson, Ike, recently told her his wish that all stepchildren everywhere could be free to love their families as they want. He knows what it's like to feel like a caged animal, unable to love all the people in your life as you wish. Parents don't realize how this dilemma can stifle a child. In honor of women’s history month, today’s guest is here to teach us to stop listening to the voices of other people! They force us to do or be certain things that aren’t authentic with who we are. It’s only when we get real about who we are and why we are here in this world----and listen to the voices within us---that we can truly function with compassion and self-love. Akosua Dardaine Edwards is happy to share the lessons she has learned on her journey, based on the foundation of self-love and self-belief. Akosua loves working on the ground level with people of all ages, seeing the transformation firsthand. She is an author, TED talk speaker, and a fantastic truth-speaker. I’m thrilled to meet up with my new friend Akosua today and introduce her to you! YOU have a story to tell Have you ever felt alone and like a failure? Akosua was going through a rough patch in life, and her definition of success was linked to material things and a certain lifestyle. When she “lost it all,” in the human sense, she was left with just herself---a situation that she found difficult to navigate. To deal with this, she ran away to Uganda. It was there that she realized who she really was and why she was here. This led her to the realization that we all have a story to tell, which became the basis for her wildly inspirational TED talk, “There is power in your story.”   TWEET: At the end of it all, WE have to define what makes us joyful. #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards   “Not enoughness”   Have you encountered those moments of “not enoughness?” Fighting against it takes work every day, doing the work faithfully, and being courageous. Akosua says, “You have to be willing to fail, because failure is just an opportunity for you to know that this is not where you are supposed to be.” You have to know WHO you are----not who you THINK you are. Akosua’s message is that you can’t define yourself by what you do for a living or what you own, and don’t ever let your life revolve around things that are fleeting. TWEET: “Not enoughness” will mash you up! #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards If people lived in their truth . . . What if we all lived in our truth? The potential is mind-blowing! Here we are, forcing each other to do certain things and live in certain ways, which only causes people to hide themselves in addictions and so many other things. If we all lived in our truth, social ills would change, people would change, and SO many issues would be eliminated. Besides all of those reasons, whether or not you live in YOUR truth affects your mental health. Akosua shares how she finally learned to honor the voices within herself. TWEET: Do not be afraid of yourself and spending time with yourself. #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Start it. Stop talking about it. In honor of women’s history month, today’s show features a previous guest who’s still hard at work chasing her dreams and helping others chase theirs. You can catch her first appearance on Chasing Dreams back in Episode 97. Elaine Williams has helped hundreds of people with their confidence in front of the camera and in front of audiences. She takes people who are overcome with fear and turns them into confident public speakers, whether they are addressing 5 or 5000. She has 40+ years’ experience in professional performing and TV appearances on shows such as SNL, America’s Got Talent, and HBO. Elaine uses her two degrees in drama to help train her students and clients in their own media appearances. Spots are filling up fast for her next training program, Captivate the Crowd.  That little voice Have you heard it? We all have it---”that little voice.” It’s the voice of fear that stops us from moving forward, chasing the dream, and taking the leap. That voice never really goes away, but Elaine can teach people how to manage it. She teaches her clients how to “navigate the critic” by coming from the inside out. Elaine’s focus for performers and public speakers is on the preparation and rehearsal. She says that even veterans have nervousness, but a professional learns to manage it well. TWEET: Don’t let your fear keep you from chasing your dreams. #chasingdreams Influencing others Are you even aware of the effect that living YOUR dream can have on others? Elaine explains why it’s super important to be authentic in your structure and creativity and to celebrate your wins. Elaine learned early on to take the time to journal after every set, show, or speech. She listed three things that worked well and what she could do better next time. This practice helps active learning and maximizes your time and energy. Journaling allows you to see the growth in yourself over time.  TWEET: Journaling allows you to see the growth in yourself over time. Celebrate yourself! #chasingdreams Fighting fear We’ve all felt it---the fear that comes from trying something new or stepping boldly outside our comfort zone. Fear comes in many forms and with many faces, and its companion, limiting beliefs, can work together with fear to trip you up big time. Being really authentic means giving of yourself fully. Elaine says that she would rather work with 8-10 deeply committed people who are ready to work, than with 100 people who are afraid to be authentic. It takes courage in the face of fear to go deeper, but chasing YOUR dreams serves to inspire so many other people. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Get an accountability buddy who will call you on your stuff. Set up a weekly appointment however your schedule allows.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:20] Elaine’s life since Episode 97 [2:37] How fear freezes people up [6:18] Why the “critic voice” won’t go away [9:06] Nerves---why we always have them [10:34] Living your dreams and influencing others [14:40] How journaling helps your focus [16:49] What holds people back [22:00] Making friends with fear [28:15] Being a conduit for healing [29:45] The dangers of comparison [32:20] No such thing as overnight success [36:05] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED: www.aimeej21.com/episode182    Visit www.aimeej21.com/fundathon  to find out more about Fundathon, coming soon on March 18-21. What are the “wins” you can look back on in your life? Can you see how to use those for motivation today? Join us for today’s show that focuses on empowerment, career development, and claiming your best life. Regine Roy is a mental health consultant, speaker, and the president and founder of Queen Geniuses, Inc. Regine delivers a life-changing message to students and professionals about the power of choice on topics like self-assessment, friendships, family, and careers. She is an astute specialist with deep and insightful knowledge on how to create a life on your own terms. A clear vision How has your background factored into your life decisions? For Regine, her life path put her on the course to make a difference and be impactful in the world. She grew up in Brooklyn, NY, in a poor family of Caribbean immigrants. A social worker by trade, it was having incredible teachers and mentors in her life that helped her realize that she wanted to work with young women of color to be a positive representation, because so many are growing up in poverty without the resources they need to succeed.  TWEET: Being a positive representation for young women of color can help them succeed with resources I never had! #chasingdreams Benefits of having “wins” What are your “wins”? Regine teaches that the wins over the course of your life can greatly impact your mindset. Those little moments of applause, recognition, and praise give you the acceleration to do MORE. On the flip side, when a young person hasn’t experienced those wins, then it becomes more difficult to push yourself as you get older. Regine recounts how applying for--and securing--her first college scholarship played a big role in her future success. TWEET: Every win that you celebrate can propel you on to more wins and further acceleration. Praise someone. You have no idea what it will do for them. #chasingdreams Use the “wins” for motivation today Can you think back to some of your “wins” in early childhood? Regine can remember some of hers when she was a young girl in school--and people around her believed in her. The problem is that some people have trouble identifying the wins that can push them forward. This is one reason Regine created the Reclaiming Your Throne curriculum for training professionals and students. You never know the impact that just ONE teacher can have on students and their futures. Of course, we know that dreams and discipline are necessary for the future, but are you willing to do the work? TWEET: You never know the impact that just ONE teacher can have on students and their futures. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Allow yourself to dream and think about the things that are important to you. Have you fallen into the trap of saying, “I’ll give my dream a TRY”? Today’s show will expose the negative mindset in that statement and SO many others that keep us from becoming fully committed to chasing the dream that lives within us. Join us to learn more! Ash Cash is one of the nation’s top personal finance experts. Dubbed “The Hip-Hop Financial Motivator,” he uses a culturally responsive approach in teaching financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Ash is a speaker and the author of seven books. He’s best known for helping people maximize their full potential by giving them the inspiration, tools, and resources needed to live their best life. Change your money mindset How important is perspective? It’s the most important factor in determining your mindset, and your mindset will determine your success! Ash grew up in the projects of NYC, witnessing drugs and murders on a regular basis. He rose above all of that to find a career in banking, but he still had a negative attitude about what he could do with his life. The time came when he knew he needed to “switch things up,” so he read books and started practicing how he could change his mindset and his perspective. He learned that you can create any circumstance you want through your mindset, and he’s on a mission to help people change their money mindset and live better lives. TWEET: If you’re working for praise or criticism, then you’re at the mercy of other people. #chasingdreams @iamashcash The big misconception about money Do you think that you “work hard for money”? Ash explains why this is exactly THE WRONG thing to say, because the key is to have your money work for YOU. It’s important to change your perception and be the employer of your money, by creating multiple income streams and residual income. Ash says to allow your money to work for you, and don’t chase after it. There is a direct correlation between serving and doing what you love and financial abundance. TWEET:  RICH - Realizing I Create Happiness #chasingdreams @iamashcash Don’t put conditions on your dreams You might think saying, “I’ll give my dream a shot,” is a good thing to say, but Ash says NO! You were built and designed for your dream. It has to be attainable if it’s something you envisioned, because it’s the essence of who you are. Many people are too afraid of failure to even begin! The key word in dream-chasing is UNTIL. Decide that you’ll chase your dream UNTIL. Be committed and keep going. TWEET: You’re not a failure if you fail; you’re a failure if you quit. #chasingdreams @iamashcash Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Make the commitment. Hart is here today. In honor of Black History Month, Stephen returns as a former guest and friend of mine and friend of the show. He is the Chief Creative Officer of Isles Media, LLC. His creations include Brand You Academy and Trailblazers FM. Stephen is also a dynamic speaker on the topics of personal branding, entrepreneurship, and podcasting. His mission is to guide 10,000 people through creating an amazing personal brand over the next 5 years. How Stephen handles his busy life Have you ever launched out into something completely brand new? Stephen was brand new at podcasting when he appeared back in Episode 56 in August 2016. He shared with us the tools he used back then that he still relies on today, like Evernote. The need for organization is greater than ever before. Stephen and his wife both work full-time jobs and have two young kids. Being busy, making time for family, and prioritizing mental health are everyday challenges for Stephen. He shares with us why he took an extended break from the podcast last summer and how God’s design for him includes his listening more closely to his body.  TWEET: Sometimes you have to listen to your body and take a break when you need to. @stephenahart #chasingdreams Your nugget of wisdom What have you shared with the world? Stephen’s Brand You Academy was born from the feedback he received as people reached out to him for more each week. He then developed and created the Trailblazers brand, a platform that’s engaging and has built an amazing community. He then saw the need of personal branding help for leaders and entrepreneurs. When he spoke at Podcast Movement on, “Build, Market, and Grow Your Amazing Brand While Still Working a Full-Time Job,” he saw tremendous interest. Stephen realized that his nugget of wisdom was an idea that he needed to give life to and share with the world--without waiting on perfection. TWEET: You can’t wait on perfection until you execute your dreams. @stephenahart #chasingdreams The important thing to remember If you’re launching an online course, then you probably wouldn’t jump in before the course is complete. Stephen had to do just that, when he knew he couldn’t wait. He realized his level of understanding of branding and marketing was somewhere between 8-10, and the average person who takes the course is around 0-2. His revelation was that he didn’t have to take people all the way to 10, but needed to get them to 4-5. Sometimes, the most important thing is to jump in and see the progression. What’s the greatest gift you can give to someone else? It’s a debatable subject, but what could possibly be more valuable to someone with kidney disease than to receive a kidney from a living donor? Today’s show introduces you to an amazing person with a truly amazing story. Jason Nothdurft is a friend of mine and a true superhero. He’s a married, 32-year-old police dispatcher with a 2-year-old puppy and his first child due in April. Jason donated his kidney in 2014, and has dedicated much of his free time to advocating on behalf of kidney patients and living organ donors. The saying is true: “Not all superheroes wear capes.” Jason is a remarkable person with a spirit of compassion and sacrifice, and I’m thrilled to share his journey of being an organ donor to highlight this important cause. Learning from mistakes What did you want to be as a kid? Police dispatcher is probably not a profession that many people aspire to, and even though it’s not a glamorous job, the dispatchers are the ultimate first responders. They are the first point of contact when people need help in emergency situations. When Jason started out, he admits that he was intimidated by parts of the job and doubted his ability to respond correctly to emergencies. How did he learn? By making mistakes. His lessons to others are that there are always things to learn and ways to improve. TWEET: We all learn by making mistakes. It’s one of the best ways to improve! @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams Saying YES and NO How do you handle the age-old dilemma of when to say YES and when to say NO? For Jason, he learned that he couldn’t focus on all the things he wanted to do--and do them well. In reducing his stress levels, he chose instead to focus on 1-2 things, and even went to his boss and explained that he needed to scale back. These brave decisions can be selfish AND selfless at the same time. Mental health is not openly discussed among law enforcement, but we need to improve on this, remove the stigma, and provide resources. TWEET: We need to remove the stigma of mental health issues for those in the law enforcement field. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams The best sacrifice Have you ever considered being a living organ donor? Jason stepped in when the stepfather of one of his best friends needed a kidney. Jason was 27 when he made the decision to be tested, along with a small group of seven friends. Jason was the one who matched, so the donation was made in 2014. Jason attributes his willingness to volunteer to growing up in a family of public servants, always learning to help and serve others in the community. How do you show up in your life? Are you living your best life every day? Today’s show is full of inspiration to help you leave the mundane behind and push yourself to never again accept mediocrity as your normal.  Scott Mulvaney channels his health-nut, adrenaline-junkie energy into everything he influences. That same energy comes through on his LIVETHEFUEL podcast, which helps fuel your health, business, and lifestyle. Scott focuses on sales and marketing growth, brand strategy, coaching, and consulting solutions to help you control how you exist online. There are very few people as passionate as Scott about living his best life every day.  Wanting something “different” Can you look back at specific circumstances in your life and see the lessons learned? For Scott, the life lessons are everywhere as he contemplates his life journey. He was raised in a farm family in NJ that relocated later to PA, where Scott’s family still lives and works in farming today. Scott, however, wanted something different. He never thought he would go to college because school was never easy or comfortable, but then he discovered vocational tech school. He interned at an electronics lab at 17 years old and then learned a tough lesson when he was let go from the lab he built so an adult could be hired to run the lab.  TWEET: Life lessons are everywhere, so don’t be afraid to look for them in your successes and failures. #chasingdreams A two-year detour Scott went on to achieve college degrees in marketing AND psychology, but then something changed. He met a girl from the west coast who aspired to be a Hotshot firefighter. He thought that sounded like an interesting challenge, and said to himself, “What if this is the next phase of my dream?” The training and the concept blew his mind, so in 2010, he went out west and proved himself for two years. Since the Hotshot “season” was only a few months of the year, he spent the other months traveling and making some crazy connections with all kinds of people. TWEET: What they taught me in school, I don’t use. #chasingdreams Why LIVETHEFUEL? If you’ve ever contemplated doing a podcast, you’ve probably toyed with what you would name your show. Scott had listened to a lot of podcasts as he was busy helping a friend grow her company, but he knew there was something more he was meant to do. For inspiration, he covered a wall with Post-It notes of every keyword that meant something to him. He took the mantra, “Live life to the fullest” and altered it to “Live the fired-up epic life”-----and the acronym FUEL was born. Now, Scott is busy writing a book, for which he plans to donate his proceeds to the families of fallen firefighters.  TWEET: What if I could write a book and NOT make money from it? #chasingdreams **For a bonus behind-the-scenes conversation with Scott, visit http://ww.aimeej21/patreon and become a Patreon Donor.
