The Indian-born tabla player and composer, teacher, and advocate Zakir Hussain, son of Ustad Alla Rahka, who passed away in late 2024, wasn't just a virtuoso improviser - he was one of the world's exceptional percussionists, working in many genres, and was the world's preeminent tabla master. He was a great communicator in many musical languages, including jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Nigerian talking drums, or Indonesian gamelan; he was also a great listener and a bringer of joy (editor can't help herself.) One of the most exciting ways that Zakir Hussain shared tabla specifically, and percussion more broadly was by way of the Masters of Percussion Tour – which was exactly as stunning and marvelous as a music fan (especially a drum nerd) might ever imagine. Zakir turned the tabla into a global instrument by way of his incredible collaborations, playing with everyone from George Harrison to Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, from John McLaughlin's Shakti and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project; he's laid down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) and Patsy Reid (formerly of Breabach); played concertos with western orchestras, with and without banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and performed and recorded with scores of Indian classical musicians. Zakir Hussain enjoyed the different challenges that each new collaborator “will throw at him”. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Ustad Zakir Hussain joined Pandit Rahul Sharma, the son of illustrious santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who established the pedigree of the santoor within Indian Classical Music. Pt. Rahul Sharma has since built on his father's style, “taking the santoor to new corners of the world”, (Darbar.org). Rahul Sharma has also collaborated widely across genres, having released some 60 albums, split between classical Indian music and more experimental recordings. Rahul Sharma and Zakir Hussain played in-studio in Oct of 2024, just about six weeks before Hussain passed away. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Dhun: Misra Pahadi 2. Dhun Keharwa Sharma explains the roots of the santoor, and gives a quick demonstration of its 94 strings which require precise tuning:  Zakir Hussain also gave an intimidatingly fast explainer of some of the syllables of tabla, what the left and right hand might do, with unbelievable and impressive speed: See their performances:

Until recently, classical music around the world has loved to project itself as being beyond the grasp of the masses. Carnatic music has been no exception to this self-created aura of inscrutability. Mangala Karthik, a Carnatic musician and teacher and co-founder of Anandi Centre of Music believes it is the duty of every teacher and learner to cut through the jargon and spread the joy of this magnificent art form. Her training under legends in the field and a constant connect with young minds at Anandi make her ideally placed to offer a session on the basics of appreciating Carnatic music at multiple levels. Through the last two millennia, Indian poets and philosophers have addressed existential questions surrounding the individuals role in society, dealing with inequity, discrimination and oppression. Their answers have ranged from a philosophical acceptance to outright call for revolution. Yet others didn't wait for a crisis to occur before calling for change, from the minor to a complete overhaul. Vivartana presents the work of such social revolutionaries —poets, politicians, rulers and sants in a musical tour across time and territory, from Kerala to Kashmir. The program is anchored by performance of songs by Musician Chitra Srikrishna accompanied by Adamya Ramanand on the Mridangam and Vaibhav Ramani on the violin in multiple languages, interspersed with a narration to provide the audience both context and a thread of continuity. Visionary American developer Jonathan Rose, author of The Well-Tempered City, offers us his vision for the ‘City of Opportunity' in the wake of Covid-19 and the practical approach he applies to creating developments which embody that vision. Full of wit and wisdom, Jonathan describes the inclusive values he seeks to promote in the affordable housing communities from The Rose Companies, where good homes are located near to mass transit and close to jobs – often comprising educational and health facilities. One such project is Via Verde, his first collaboration with Grimshaw, on a brownfield site in the Bronx. When it opened, NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg described it as “one of the most environmentally advanced affordable housing developments in the nation”. The famous architectural critic, Michael Kimmelman chose Via Verde as the subject of his front page New York Times debut, writing that the development “makes as good an argument as any new building in the City for the cultural and civic value of architecture”. Jonathan's enlightening conversation with Tim Williams ends with an excerpt from “Summertime” by Jog Blues, Rose's excellent band that fuses Jazz, Blues and Indian Classical Music, a rare treat. Individual and Team coaching: Episode Notes  In this podcast episode we touch on the importance of both individual and team coaching within organizations.Individual coaching is generally aimed at helping workers get back to their performance zone, which is where they can keep moving towards their better self. This is particularly effective when professionals find themselves at a stall point, and wonder about ways that they can achieve more in life. With team coaching the focus is on people's relationship and dynamics, to make sure that individuals know how to listen and work as a group. In an organizational setting, professionals are often drawn to speak their own mind rather than listen to each other. Team coaching however allows to hone one's observational and listening skills in order to thrive at a collective level, in a way that everyone's perspective is taken into account. Based on his own professional experience, Conscious Leadership Coach Peter Wolff is eager to improve people's well-being at work by practicing both individual and team coaching. In the second part of our conversation, Peter speaks about the importance of looking for the root cause of stress, whether that is coming from fear of failure, unmet expectations, unrealistic demands, or any other triggering situation that may happen in the relational space at work. We approach the end of the discussion by discussing purpose, both on an individual and an organizational level. Specifically, Peter mentions how purpose serves the following outcomes, among others: Aligning individual values with the company's wider perspective.Giving people a chance to know themselves better. Giving people permission to offer what they are good at, so that it can be received by others. Our Guest: Peter Wolff  Peter Wolff The Art & Science of Thriving At Work About Peter: With a unique background in engineering, social science and mindfulness, Peter Wolff coaches individuals in mastering mindset and authentic communication, as well as practicing creative collaboration. A native of San Francisco, CA, Peter spent 15 years in both government and corporate settings applying leading edge IT and software solutions to transportation problems.
