Jason Wild is the founder and President of JWAM, an SEC-registered investment adviser with over $1.7 billion under management. Jason found investing during his last year of pharmacy school.  Taking Peter Lynch seriously, he invested every other paycheck in pharmaceutical ideas he thought were undervalued.  His theses were correct far more often than they weren't and he made himself almost a half million dollars in the market.  After proving his competence, he started a fund with a mere $80,000.  Today, that fund manages over $1.7Bn.     Jason's initial strategy focused on specialty pharmaceuticals.  His knowledge base enabled him to assess asset bases and M&A quickly (and correctly).  After pitching a company on an M&A opportunity, and getting nothing in return, Jason decided to take matters into his own hands.  He decided to purchase Arbor Pharmaceuticals for $2.5mm dollars and built the company via M&A. After 3 years, KKR bought a portion of Arbor; valuing the enterprise at $1.1Bn.     Today, Jason is Chairman and Interim CEO of TerrAscend Corporation, a cannabis company with multi state operations in the US.  His official Bio is as follows:   "Jason Wild is the founder and President of JWAM, an SEC-registered investment adviser with over $1.7 billion under management. After starting his first fund in 1998 with only $80,000 AUM, Jason achieved early success by leveraging his background as a pharmacist to find undervalued specialty pharmaceutical companies and by managing the firm's investments for long-term growth. After building a strong track record as a stock picker, Jason expanded his investment universe and applied his experience and extensive healthcare network to private market opportunities. He has since established himself as a highly respected investor and sought-after partner for both public and private companies."   This was an awesome conversation to have.  Highlights are as follows:   ~1:00-6:00 - Early career highlights ~6:00- Finding cannabis as a potential investment opportunity ~9:50 - Applying the same learnings from pharmaceuticals to cannabis and getting control of TerrAscend ~13:50 - When the US cannabis thesis got derisked ~16:44 - Applying for licences in New Jersey and what that means ~18:50 - Buying Ilera ~23:30 - Discussion on incentives for East Coast regulators and how they may think about supply/demand balances ~26:30 - The strategy of density vs spreading out the retail footprint ~28:58 - Homegrown cannabis as an alternative ~31:00 - Federalization/interstate commerce and what that may do to the thesis.  ~34:49 - The social justice impact of legalization ~37:13 - Consistency in edibles and what is difficult about getting those products consistent ~44:00 - Whether the illicit market will keep its customers ~49:00 - What Jason is doing with Chris Webber to help minorities profit in the cannabis industry ~55:00 - Why issuing equity right now was the right choice for TerrAscend

How do you make forward momentum the standard for your business, rather than an occasional thing? Growth is far from unpredictable if you know how to engineer it - you just have to master a few important concepts. Jason Graybeal is the founder and president of Graybeal Group, a multimillion-dollar agricultural, commercial and personal insurance agency designed to help empower high-performing individuals to thrive in rural areas while protecting customers in the same market. Jason is also the co-host of the No Bull Business and Brews Podcast, where he lends his wisdom and sense of humor to other entrepreneurs and business owners on the rise. On this episode of the Step It Up Entrepreneur podcast, Tomas and Jason cover how Jason grew his insurance business to great heights using genuine connections, drive, and smart acquisition strategies, what to look for as you seek out a group of peers you can grow with and learn from, and Jason’s guiding philosophy regarding cash and opportunities. Listen in for a laid-back interview that will get your wheels turning on your next big move towards major business growth.  What You’ll Learn: How Jason managed to get funding for his goals early on without a ton of assets to prove himself to his investors (and why he has the exact opposite problem these days) Why books have been irreplaceably valuable in Jason’s rise to the top, and what he’s gained from his reading list over the years What Jason looks for in his employees and team members - and how a pattern of negativity can change the tone of your whole company culture And much more! Favorite Quote: "What's that story of Elon Musk, maybe, he went to 180 banks before they finally got a yes, or something like that… The same mentality exists - if I want this to happen, I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna find a way and I still am that way. Like, if there's a deal that pops up tomorrow, I will find a way. And I can almost guarantee you that I will find the way, I'm not going to give up."   Jason Graybeal   Connect with Jason: No Bull Business and Brews Podcast JasonGraybeal.com Facebook Instagram How To Get Involved: From his start in the GPS tracking industry to founding the Step It Up Academy, Tomas Keenan is on a mission to break out of the concept of “average” and reach the success that is anything but. Jason Gardner is a father, homesteader, leadership instructor, and regenerative agriculture devotee who lives with his family on a remote property in the mountains of northeastern Washington State. Jason is also a retired Navy SEAL Master Chief who spent nearly thirty years in the SEAL teams and is a recipient of the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and numerous other awards. As you’ll hear in our conversation, Jason applies the lessons learned from his years of service toward building a meaningful life for his family in the wilds of Washington-- a life lived with purpose and intention, built on a deep respect for the land. - If Jason sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the husband to Iris Gardner, who was a guest on the podcast just a few weeks ago. Given all of the wisdom that Iris shared regarding parenting and intentional living, and how fondly she spoke of Jason as a father and husband, I thought it would be fun to have Jason join me for a conversation. It was fascinating to hear Jason discuss many of the same topics that Iris and I covered, as he provided a complementary perspective on subjects including parenting, marriage, and thriving as a family in such a remote, wild region of the West. - This was a fantastic conversation, and I can’t thank Jason enough for taking the time to share his wisdom with me. We talked a lot about his military service-- from his decision as a high-schooler to join the SEALs to his long and diverse career as a SEAL leader. We also discuss his life-long love of wild, mountainous places, and why he and Iris have chosen to raise their family in northeastern Washington. We talked about how to find purpose in work, no matter what your chosen career. We discuss the idea of having a warrior’s mentality and how he applies that idea to parenting and his current career as a leadership consultant. Jason explains the dichotomy of being an elite special forces operator and gentle father and husband. And we also talk about regenerative agriculture, the many life lessons he’s learned from training horses, influential music, his favorite books, the best advice he’s ever received, and much more. - There are so many insights and resources packed into this episode, so don’t forget to reference the episode notes for a full list of topics and links to everything we discussed. And if you’d like more insights into Jason and Iris’s life in Washington, you can check out their Youtube channel, which I’ve linked to in the notes. When Jason Greer and his co-author Phil Dixon began the journey of writing their book, Bias, Racism, and the Brain, Jason didn't consider how writing the stories of racism in his life would impact his internal messages, and how they would affect the simmering of those experiences under the surface of his life. At one point after sending a story to his co-author, Phil sent it back, saying that Jason had to go into more detail, to dig deeper if their intention to guide readers to empathy and compassion was going to be successful. What Jason didn't realize was that though he had these vivid memories, he had largely buried the emotional connection to them. And when he began to write, truly write them down, that simmering often came to a boil, not just of anger and injustice, but of frustration and concern that he had not yet addressed these experiences in a way that would allow him to be truly comfortable in his skin. His brown, beautiful skin. As I read this book, I felt anger, frustration, grief, a sense of helplessness. Mostly I felt anger that these things happened to anyone, and that so many people continue to experience these acts of subtle and overt racism and bigotry. Jason told me that he often had to be a chameleon in his life, adjusting how he speaks, dresses, and carries himself depending on his audience. In his book, he mentions "the clutch", his reference to when white women clutch their purses to them when he walks nearby. He finds himself shrinking his posture and speaking more softly to make people around him more comfortable. We talked about how that impacts his inner voice and sense of identity, that requirement to be different somehow, just to make himself less ... well... himself, less of a perceived threat, no matter whether he's wearing a fine tailored suit or workout clothes. A couple of things that really stuck with me were that I felt I could relate to some of the stories, even as a white woman, because every one of us has experienced bigotry at some point. Against our gender, where we grew up, our education or lack of, our accent... the list goes on. But the other thing that stuck with me is more relevant: How little we notice and acknowledge this common experience of bigotry in our lives in order to stop ourselves from doing it to others. Lucky for us readers, Phil Dixon explains a lot of why this occurs, what kind of bias that is, and offers some strategies to notice, reduce, and adjust those biases. This was a conversation I will remember for years, I'm sure. And I sincerely hope listeners will read this book, absorb it, and get embarrassed and angry enough to step up to address our complicit behaviors when people around us experience bigotry and racism of any kind. During this episode, I shared that when our boys were little, I gave Hanukkah presentations to the students in their elementary school every year. I knew that if I didn't do this, the majority of these students in Montana wouldn't be exposed to Judaism by a Jewish person. I bought dreidels (spinning top game for Hanukkah) in bulk and gave away hundreds of them over the years. A local bakery would make miniature jelly doughnuts (an Israeli Hanukkah treat) by the multiple dozens for me and I'd distribute both to hundreds of students each year. During my presentation I would explain that tolerance is only the beginning. Tolerance is putting on blinders and saying: "I don't care what you do as long as it doesn't affect me." (It's kind of like telling people you're color blind.) We must go far beyond tolerance to acknowledging and valuing the differences among us. Not to just accept those differences, but to embrace them as beautiful contributions to our communities. Start here. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. 2020 has been one heck of a year, for all kinds of reasons, many of them of course less than positive. The world has been turned on its head, with lots of the things we took for granted as our “normal” behaviour no longer allowed or drastically changed. 2020 has also put a strain on the global community in unprecedented ways, straining healthcare, education, and business. The technology industry has been at the forefront of much of the global response, not just in business, but across all areas of life tools like Zoom and Teams moved from corporate apps to an everyday part of people’s lives, a way to do business, yes, but also a way to stay in touch, have get-togethers, quizzes and of course of ways of carrying on education from the youngest to those studying for advanced qualifications. However, this move to a more technologically driven world, also highlighted real disparity while for many they have plentiful access to technology and are tech literate, for swathes of the population that is not true. It was this disparity that was noted by two of my close IT community friends, Michael Cade and Jason Benedicic, both are regular guests on the show, and both have very busy day jobs, but both saw examples of that technology gap and wondered what they could do about it. This led them to start to look at different ways of making technology available, what exists today, and what we may need to change to truly make technology accessible to more people than it is today. It was this work that caught my eye and felt like a great topic for our last Tech Interviews of 2020, so that is exactly what we do as I’m joined by Michael and Jason to explore what we can do as individuals and industry to make technology available to all. It’s a great chat and with a fine collection of Christmas outfits for you to enjoy (if you watch the YouTube version). What Jason and Michael have taken on is a great example of what we can do as a tech community, if we just think about the way we can use technology a little differently and look to solve problems. As this is the last show of the year, I would just like to say thanks for all of the support of the show this year from both a fantastic collection of guests and to you the listener, because without listeners there wouldn’t be a show. May you all have an enjoyable holiday season and let’s hope 2021 is a bit of an improvement on 2020! Until next year, thanks for listening and watching. His teams also won two TSIA Star Awards, two Service & Support Professionals Association Awards, and a Stevie Award for innovation in action.   Before his time at McAfee, Jason held executive-level positions at Sutherland Global Services and Covad communications.   Questions Can you share with us a little bit about your journey, how it is that are able to get into these different roles? And of course, more importantly, what led you to the role that you are currently in today? Could you share with us a little bit about your organization? It says you're the Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Reputation.com. What does Reputation.com do? In terms of customer experience and reputation, how can an organization ensured that if they had a good reputation, a good brand image in the eyes of their customer pre COVID, how can they sustain that and even surpass COVID with those customers maintaining their reputation? Could you share with us maybe two to three things that you think an organization or characteristics that an organization needs to embody in order to really have a reputation that is strong, where customer experience is concerned? Could you share with us how do you stay motivated every day? What's the one online resource, tool, website, or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? Could you share with us maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you? It could have been a book that you read many, many years ago, but it still has an impact on you or maybe a book that you read recently. A lot of our listeners are business owners and managers who feel they have great products and services, but they lack the constantly motivated human capital - if you are sitting across the table from that person, what's the one piece of advice that you would give them to have a successful business? What’s one thing that’s going on in your life right now that you’re really excited about – either something you’re working on to develop yourself or your people? Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or any form of obstacle or challenge that you're being faced by you'll revert to this quote because it kind of helps put you back on track and just get you refocused. Do you have one of those?   Highlights   Jason’s Journey Jason stated that it's a great question and anybody that's being honest when they talk about their career, has to say that a lot of it is luck and a lot of it is timing and a lot of it is hard work. But he was coming around at a time when the call center world was really beginning to migrate to offshoring in India. And he found himself right in the middle of all this transformation.   And so, if you think about what companies were doing back in the very early two thousands, it was all about how could we be more efficient? How can we be more productive? How can we reduce our costs? How can we keep our customers loyal, back then it was how do you improve customer satisfaction?   He found himself doing a lot of travel back and forth to India, found himself in the middle of all types of big change with lots of big companies. And so, he was very fortunate in the sense, unfortunate a sense that he was doing a ton of travel, but very fortunate in the sense that he was right in the middle of it all with some of the world's biggest brands in the middle of their operational transformation. And it was just a very natural progression into the career that he ended up having at McAfee and the operations world and as the world of CX really kind of became to get more formalized.   Again, happened to be the person that had the most experience doing this. And as a result was selected to lead those efforts. So, the world of formal CX in and of itself is still relatively new, it hasn't been around as a formal practice for that long. And plenty of people are still trying to figure out the really tough aspects of it, which are how you operationalize this. So that's a very brief story of how he got to where he is.   What Does Reputation.com do? Jason shared that in terms of the world of CX, if you think about how the traditional survey world has evolved and all the listening posts that the CX practitioners are beginning to collect and listened to and take action on; it's not just surveys anymore, it's social media, it's reviews, it's business listening data. And so, what they've been able to do is build a platform and an algorithm that really allows their customers to get found, get chosen and get better through not only all of the point products that he just named, but really the amalgamation of all that into one platform, using one algorithm to really spit out and generate actionable data that allows them to hear what their customers are saying and take action on what they hear.   So they're smack dab in the middle of what some would call the CX space and what others would call the online reputation management space. And so, they've actually created their own category, which they now call RXM for Reputation Experience Management.   Me: So, when I do customer service training, one of the things that we ask the participants is what makes them choose one business over another? And usually, you'll have different options, you have price, you have quality of product, quality of service, convenience, reputation is always one of the options there. What's are your views, we’re in this space now where there's a lot happening globally. Some companies are exercising a lot of hibernation, they're not extending much spend because they're very unsure of what the future holds. And because of that, they're really trying to stay afloat. And then you have other organizations that this economy actually is making them thrive and they are spending abundantly.   Keeping a Good Reputation, A Good Brand Image in the Eyes of Customers Jason shared that one of the reasons that he really likes the name of their company so much is because, reputation. Brands are built on reputations and reputations are built on trust. And what's really interesting about today's world, the COVID world is the implications for how people are going to want to do business moving forward.    And the best predictor of the future is always the past. And so, if you go back and you look at something as impactful and change full as 9/11 was for the United States. What did that ultimately change? Well, it actually changed the way that we travel. If you kind of look at how you traveled before and how you travel after it's completely different. And he could go through all kinds of different scenarios that have happened between then and now, but this one's different because it impacts everybody the same. Nobody is immune, every business, every person is immune. And what is top of mind for every customer and literally across the world is safety. And so, if you're thinking about your brand and you're thinking about your reputation and how others are going to perceive you, he would say that the answer to your question is, if you're not focused on making sure that your customers not just only have a great experience in doing business with you, but if they have a safe experience, that they feel safe, that they feel like you're on top of it on their behalf. Those are the companies, at least in the short term are going to come ahead and come out on top.   And quite frankly, those who don't will get punished. You're going to see anytime you see folks not taking the measures, at least the minimum guidelines to ensure their customer safety, they're going to get punished and they're going to get punished online especially with social media and reviews today. So it's a great question and it's a really interesting situation that we're in today.   Me: So one of the things that I heard you saying just now, very big buzzword in customer experience now is safety. Even if it wasn't something that organizations had as a priority on their list of delivering a quality experience, it definitely is now seeing that that's something that you have to incorporate into your business, especially if you are predominantly a face to face type of operation.   So, how do you see organizations really using or capitalizing on this safety thing because apart from sanitizing and ensuring that there are social distance markers on the ground, but people need to know that at the end of the day, you have their best interests at heart and the best interest of your employees, because they can basically pick up if you are just doing it because the government says you are to do it, or you just don't care. You're all about the bottom line.   Jason stated that that's a great question. And frankly, that's exactly where we're seeing the explosion is on the employee side. Companies are coming to them in mass and wanting to know, “Hey, how can you help us understand what our employees think? How can you help us understand how we're doing towards keeping their trust and earning and keeping their trust in these times?”   They're really concerned about, “Hey, we're spending all this money on real estate and nobody's using it. And so, how do we make our employees feel comfortable with our policies and allow them, without risk to them and without losing their trust to come back to the office, or at least have some type of hybrid model.   Going back to the 9/11 example about how it changed the way we travel, this is changing the way that we interact and the way that we work. And the good news is that the entire world has learned that you can work via Zoom or Google. So, they're interesting dynamics going on for sure.     Characteristics an Organization Needs to Embody to Have a Good Reputation Jason shared that the number one thing is you've got to really create a culture of listening and then a culture of action. And quite frankly, in his opinion at least, it's the hardest thing to do when you're talking about operationalization of customer feedback or CX, however you want to characterize it. The absolute hardest thing to do is be a great listener, number one. And then number two, actually take action on what your customers have to say. What he finds to be most interesting is how well-intended so many people are when they're listening to customer feedback.   And oftentimes what happens is someone will take lots of customer feedback and they'll turn it into an idea that they, the employee thinks is a good idea to implement on the customer. When in reality, it's just a good idea, but it's not really what the customers want.   And so, he thinks that making sure that you have that rigor and that discipline to not just listen to customers, but actually take action on what you hear, he thinks is the number one thing to do. And then, number two, you've got to permeate that into your entire culture and make it a thread of every employee in the company and so that they feel that they have a vested interest in doing what's right by your customers.     How Jason Stays Motivated When asked how he stays motivated, Jason shared that he has a lot of employees that are really, really focused on doing right by their customers and creating successful outcomes for them. And one of the funny things is his employees, they laugh at him about it but, they do all hands-on on a regular basis. And one of the things that he actually do on his Zoom, he has a zoom TV. And so, what he actually do is he go through and he'll look at all their faces and he sees the commitment that they have to their customers and the commitment that they have to their company. And it really drives him to help put them in the best possible position to win, number one. So, because he thinks happy employees make happy customers.   And he thinks the second thing that really keeps them all is that this notion that we are still so young and early in the business and he happens to have the good fortune of also being in the same position in the world of security with McAfee. And he saw how that grew and changed and really impacted businesses and people's lives. And he thinks this is no different, you’re just at the earlier stages of something that's going to continue to swell and become just a bigger and more important component of everybody's business world.   App, Website or Tool that Jason Absolutely Can’t Live Without in His Business Jason stated that what’s so funny about Yanique asking him this question, he actually got off of all social media about a month ago, and he has to be honest, he doesn't miss it one bit. Now, the answer to the question is he does go to Google News every day. And so, he does read the headlines every day, and then there's some stories he'll dig into but the amount of time that he spends online has diminished rapidly and the amount of time that he has actually been able to pour into thought leadership has increased exponentially. And so, he has to be honest, it's been great.   He has the good fortune. He has some family members who are pretty famous online and as a result, he thinks a lot of their fans follow him or used to follow him and so it becomes a distraction. And it was very healthy for him to just put it all down and focus on things that matter. And it's been great.   Book That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Jason When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Jason stated he gets asked this question a lot and it has been the same answer forever. But it was the first book that he read in business school is called Theory of Constraints by Eliyahu Goldratt, it's such a simple, easy read, and it really creates and just kind of reminds you how simple things really should be and just to always kind of keep it that way. And so, he'd go on the business side, he'd go with that one.   On the fiction side, he would say either Shōgun by James Clavell or Pillars of the Earth: A Novel by Ken Follett which are both over a thousand pages, but they're great. And he says that because you should always take time to exercise your creative side, he thinks that's really important.   How to Have a Successful Business When asked about advice to have a successful business, Jason shared that number one is listen. And then number two, he thinks just like anything else and again at McAfee and in other places he has been fortunate to be in a position where they've done numerous acquisitions and he could probably easily name 30 that he was actively involved in.   And you start to see some of the same trends emerge when you're dealing with a massive company like some of the ones that he came from, versus someone, an entrepreneur who has really scraped and worked hard to build their business from scratch and it's so admirable. And he has such a respect for the folks that do that, but at the same token, there's the ability to listen and then to delegate and really trust is the thing that he would go back and tell all of those folks, that would have been his observation is who are you putting into these roles, who are into these critical roles that are running your company for you because you can't do it all, no person is an island. And so, it really is true. And so, it is all about the people.   Me: I liked the fact that you said you think the number one thing they should do is listen. Now, how can you improve on your listening skills? It's lovely to say in theory, I think you should listen more, but let's say the person thinks that, “Well, I think I'm a good listener.” What are some things that they could do, like maybe a listening audit, or is there like a new practice they could embody to really ensure that they're trying to improve on their listening skills?   Jason stated that he almost feel like Yanique was listening in to a meeting of his over the last couple of days, just because someone asked him that same question and he said, ask. And again, keep it simple, some people have a great amount of ability to be self reflective and understand their strengths and weaknesses and others aren't and, and hopefully, are good at taking feedback. But at the end of the day, the only way to be able to listen more is to ask more and then stop.   And so, the question is that he would say is, what are the different ways in which you're asking, because you're asking him questions right now, but you might want to send him questions written, in written form at a different time or you might want to have someone else on your behalf reach out and send him a review. And so, it's all about making sure that you've got different asking posts, different asking posts create different listening posts is probably a better way to say it.   Me: I do agree with you that asking questions will definitely help you to become a better listener, especially, as you said, after you've asked the question, you remain silent and actually pay attention to what the person is saying to you. There's a book that I read at least once per year, How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. And that's one of the things that I really have taken from that book that asking questions really helps you to be just more intentional, it helps you to get more information because generally speaking, I find human beings don't necessarily just volunteer information. So if you really want to know, you have to be asking the right questions.   Jason stated that to make it even more practical, he thinks the real answer is you actually have to be interested. And the test that he gives, and this is part of anybody that works on his staff is going to hear him say this probably more, they probably have nightmares about it, but you got to be a great secondary learner. And what he means by that is, are you paying attention to what others are saying and learning from them regardless of who they are. And so, to do that and to be good at that, it requires you to actually be interested. And he’s got to tell you, if you're not interested, it's going to show.   What Jason is Really Excited About Now! Jason shared that he is in the process of building a whole model on business acumen and directly for his people. He preach a lot to his staff, it's all about the front lines and empowering them and giving them the tools to be successful. And one of the things that he has seen just across any company that he has worked for. He had the good fortune of going to business school at night and not everybody can do that. And so, he finds that it's really important when you're helping to develop your employees and your staff to actually give them tools that are practical and useful that actually help them get better. And so, he tries to do at least one of those a year.   And right now he’s working on one that goes by industry and actually will help them understand what are the key metrics for that industry that will allow you to have more meaningful conversations with people instead of, he doesn't ever want any of their customer success folks to call someone and “Hey, I'm just checking in to see how you're doing?”   He wants them to be able to, whether it's a healthcare company or an automotive company, or a property management company, or a restaurant, or you name the vertical. He wants them to feel prepared, capable, and empowered, to have meaningful business conversations with people about the things that matter to them, not just the things that matter to us (the organization). And that's really the essence of being a great listener is showing them the courtesy and the respect that you have taken the time to learn about their business, number one. But number two, he thinks it just makes their people better and he thinks that that makes them more appreciative of them and more loyal to them over time.   Where Can We Find Jason Online Jason shared listeners can find him at –   LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-grier-825b271   Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Jason Uses Jason shared that “When you're dealing with adversity, you just put your head down and you go and you keep going and eventually you'll get through it.” But he can't tell how many times he has had that conversation with himself. It's easy to be a great winner, what he thinks the real test of people's character is how they deal with adversity and really trudged through and methodically chop wood to get through it and come out the other side even better.   Please connect with us on Twitter @navigatingcx and also join our Private Facebook Community – Navigating the Customer Experience and listen to our FB Lives weekly with a new guest   Grab the Freebie on Our Website – TOP 10 Online Business Resources for Small Business Owners    Links Theory of Constraints by Eliyahu Goldratt The Pillars of the Earth: A Novel by Ken Follett   The ABC’s of a Fantastic Customer Experience Do you want to pivot your online customer experience and build loyalty - get a copy of “The ABC’s of a Fantastic Customer Experience.”   The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience provides 26 easy to follow steps and techniques that helps your business to achieve success and build brand loyalty. Jason Yarusi from Yarusi Holdings joins us today to give some practical advice for saving on controllable expenses. The first place where you want to start is with your utilities, and he shares how little adjustments in terms of water and electricity can make a big difference. Another area with cost-saving potential is contracts. When you have had the same service provider for years, it is easy to lose track of their rates and in doing so, you could be overpaying on services. That is why Jason advises listeners to renegotiate prices every year. When you start making these small upgrades to your property, be sure to include your tenants in the conversation and get their buy-in before you bump up the rent. The conversation concludes with Jason encouraging listeners to remain persistent in their real estate endeavors. Key Points From This Episode:Get a quick overview of Jason and his wife’s multifamily syndication firm and where they invest. The biggest controllable expenses and what can be done to keep costs down. The importance of paying attention to utilities and strategies for keeping the water bill at a minimum. What Jason and his team are doing to save on the cost of electricity. Paying attention to your contracts to ensure that you are not overpaying on services. How they go about evaluating properties based on controllable expenses. Communicating with tenants and getting their buy-in on your vision for the property before increasing rent. Persuasion is not a word we hear often, but the reality is that we all find ourselves in acts of persuasion throughout each day. We use persuasive tactics in our interactions with family, co-workers, neighbors, and strangers without even realizing it. If you want to be more persuasive, empathetic, generous, and understanding in your relationships, you don’t want to miss today’s show. Jason Harris is CEO of the award-winning creative agency, Mekanism, co-founder of the Creative Alliance, and author of the national bestseller, The Soulful Art of Persuasion. Jason works closely with brands through a blend of soul and science to create provocative campaigns that engage audiences. Jason has been named in the Top Ten Most Influential Social Impact Leaders, as well as the 4A’s list of “100 People Who Make Advertising Great.” His methods are so effective that they are studied in cases at Harvard Business School.  How to stand out in business Do you need a different approach to your business? Jason’s book contains a unique approach, and the feedback he’s received shows that people have responded well to his ideas. Many have adopted Jason’s actionable principles and turned them into action steps for their own success. Jason doesn’t just state abstract theories for people to follow, but he gives habits and examples to be put into practice that can truly make a difference. The book is original and authentic in every way, which stays true to Jason’s values. He explains that to stand out in your business, you have to lead with originality and vulnerability.  TWEET: Turn actionable principles into action steps for success! @jason_harris #chasingdreams Live with generosity Are you a generous person? What Jason means by leading a life of generosity is to give something away with every interaction and to leave someone better off for having crossed paths with you. Advising, counseling, and sharing can all be part of generosity as you let someone know that you are thinking of them and care about their interests. Generosity can be shown in giving a gift to someone, but Jason challenges people to think of it in less tangible ways. He explains how it’s been the hardest thing for him to learn, but being generous has helped him be successful because people are drawn to generous people. These “things” you give away will come back to you with compounded interest. Being open enough to ask for favors and help is another form of generosity, as demonstrated by the Ben Franklin effect, which Jason explains in detail.  TWEET: Give something away with every interaction and leave someone better off for having crossed paths with you. @jason_harris #chasingdreams What the world needs now is . . . empathy Would you call yourself an empathetic person? Even though, as humans, we are 99.9% the same as each other, empathy seems to be in very short supply in today’s world. Empathy is developing a natural curiosity for others, along with listening and understanding people more. We don’t often know and understand the micro experiences that contribute to people’s beliefs and opinions about certain issues. Once we know their back story, we can better understand why they think or act the way they do. That is empathy, and it takes more time and effort than judging people quickly and painting everyone with a broad brush. Jason explains that another part of empathy involves collaboration, which is reaching out to others and asking for help when you need it.  TWEET: Once we know someone’s back story, we can better understand why they think or act the way they do. @jason_harris #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action step for a dream chaser to take-”Be a dream chaser.” OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [0:04] Jason’s book and his viewpoint on persuasion [4:00] The reception to Jason’s book [9:57] The importance of the stories within us [15:10] The importance of generosity [18:45] The Ben Franklin effect [21:37] The principle of empathy [30:09] We don’t hear to listen [31:02] Soulfulness [39:02] The writing experience [41:38] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Jason’s Twitter Jason’s Instagram Jason’s LinkedIn For a Sneak Peek of Jason’s Book: The Soulful Art of Persuasion Purchase The Soulful Art of Persuasion on Amazon! Jason miles in Seattle, Washington. More importantly, you are the owner of a thriving online business. And you want to become the best ecommerce leader you can be. We're here to get you there. Let's jump in. Michael, how are you, man? I'm well, thank you. Yes, sipping a hell of a lot of lemon and honey and ginger tea. But apart from I'm pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, just keep in this coffee bank. Very well, very well. Good. Well, let's jump in today. We've got a hot topic, I think and that's the topic of moving from Amazon to Shopify, or from really, you know, Amazon to any other sales channel. But we're going to sort out how Shopify doesn't doesn't help ecommerce sellers, the pros and cons Some of the details so you're ready to jump into this absolutely hot topic. Definitely. All right, let's do it. Well, so I guess the first question that comes to my mind is you you know, you work with a lot of amazing Amazon sellers in your 10 k collective and programs work there in London. What have you heard from them in terms of their fears, frustrations, concerns, by way of migrating or adding, you know, a different channel away from fears, frustrations, concerns? I mean, if you're talking to an Amazon seller, you know, how long have you got that? I mean, I guess most of them concern Amazon rather than the fear of moving across. It's funny, I suppose people don't have so much of fear as a resistance on because Amazon does so much for you. And when we start bitching about Amazon, I guess it's good to remember that the amount of qualified traffic with a buying intent of people who they have their credit card on file is amazing. And the conversion rates you get on Amazon, I mean, I was looking at somebody that day. And he was saying, you know, it's 9% conversion rate. And I'm like, well, that's not great. We could be aiming for 1520 25%. You know, that's kind of crazily high in the context of anywhere else on online. Right. So yeah, yeah, for those understandable reasons. And, you know, people aren't in a hurry to get appointments, and they'd like to bitch about it. And I guess every so often,

Jason Gregory, writer and producer of the film Waking Up White Who is Jason Gregory? Jason D. Gregory is a recent film production MFA graduate from the University of Central Florida’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media (Go Knights!). As a child, he recalls that his friends wanted to “be like Mike,” while Gregory’s dream was to “be like Spike.”   He received his undergraduate degree in film from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 and during his studies, Gregory was selected, twice, as a participant in the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Writer’s Workshop.   In 2010, Gregory founded his own Telly-award-winning, multicultural advertising agency, Gregory Media Group, LLC. Yet, he still yearned for the “business of show.”   Jason Gregory took the plunge to chase his childhood dream and in 2016 enrolled in the MFA film production program where he immediately began writing his thesis project, Waking Up White. Filmed as a television pilot, Waking Up White is the story of a Black family that wakes up White and has 30 days to determine if they’d rather return to their cultural roots or stick with the “new skin” they’re in. Since its development, the pilot script for has been selected as a 2018 Quarterfinalist in ScreenCraft’s Film Fund and Pilot Launch TV Script competitions and a 2018 Semifinalist in the WeScreenplay Television Competition. The television pilot has recently been submitted to various local, national and international film festivals, while also garnering local and regional media coverage.   And because of his commitment to nurturing and mentoring the next generation of filmmakers, Gregory was recently appointed as the president of the Orlando Urban Film Festival; a festival dedicated to promoting and supporting minority films and filmmakers.   In 2018, Gregory was selected to participate in the National Association of Television Producers and Executive’s (NATPE) first Emerging Producers Workshop, where thirteen “emerging producers” where brought together to discuss the future of unscripted, reality television programming. As a result of that workshop, Gregory and the other producers formed 13 Brains; an unscripted, reality television “think tank.” Under the mentorship of Scott Sternberg Productions, 13 Brains develops unscripted, TV concepts and pitches them to networks and streaming platforms. Since its establishment in 2018, 13 Brains has successfully sold its first concept to Netflix, and continues to cultivate and pitch additional programming.   As a graduate student, Gregory was the recipient of the 2019 College of Arts and Humanities Graduate Student Teaching Award and the inaugural Nicholson School of Communication and Media’s Outstanding Teaching Graduate Programs Award. He was nominated for his commitment to teaching his students to “fail their way to success” and is honored to have received both awards.   In 2019, Gregory completed another childhood dream and joined UCF’s English department as a scriptwriting lecturer. In this position, he will continue to mold, mentor and challenge his students to find their voice through the art of scriptwriting.   Finally, Gregory has been married to his wife, Monique, whom he affectionally calls “the girl next door”, for 16 years and they reside in Oviedo, Florida with their two sons, Austin and Miles.   Key Questions answered by Jason Gregory: How to write a winning screenplay Advice Jason has for creatives Is an MFA necessary Why it’s OK to start your dream job later in life Best piece of advice Jason has received Jason’s definition of success Who inspires Jason and why A habit that’s helped Jason on his journey What Jason wants his legacy to be   Jason Gregory Discusses: Writing vs Producing Understanding the game Fears writers grapple with Age and following one’s dream     Key Takeaways from Jason Gregory:   You’re never too old to pursue your dreams The older you are the more life experiences you will have to draw from There are many free options to learn and study on the internet Keep at it, don’t stop Take calculated risks Be consistent     Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): https://funnybrowngirl.libsyn.com/rss   Announcements If you’re looking for a community of supportive creative entrepreneurs to elevate your journey to the next level, join me here: https://funnybrowngirl.com/facebook Subscribe to my newsletter of creative resources, including opportunities and fellowships at https://funnybrowngirl.com/subscribe    Social Media Info Connect on Instagram:   Jason Gregory – @jaydgreg FunnyBrownGirl – @funnybrowngirl    Resources for Film and Screenwriting Episodic Labs: https://episodiclab.staymacro.com/   Script Lab: https://360.thescriptlab.com/   Script Anatomy: https://www.scriptanatomy.com/ Black List: blcklst.com List of 2020 screenwriting competitions: https://www.wgfoundation.org/fellowship-writing-programs-for-screenwriters-masterlist   Ultimate Film Budget Guide: https://nofilmschool.com/film-budget-template   Screen writing course I took for the Issa Rae competition: https://www.coursera.org/learn/script-writing   #CreativeBreakthrough #CreativeBreakthroughPodcast #CreativeHustler

The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Episode #338: Jason Fried Full show notes can be found at www.LearningLeader.com Text LEARNERS to 44222 to learn more Jason Fried is the founder & CEO at Basecamp. He's the co-author of Getting Real, Remote, REWORK, and It Doesn't Have To Be Crazy At Work.  Basecamp is a privately-held Chicago-based company committed to building the best web-based tools possible with the least number of features necessary. Their blog, Signal vs. Noise, is read by over 100,000 people every day. Jason believes there's real value and beauty in the basics. Elegance, respect for people's desire to simply get stuff done, and honest ease of use are the hallmarks of Basecamp products. Notes: Commonalities of leaders who sustain excellence: Willingness/ability to know what's the work worth doing The skill to discern what's important How to develop that skill? Must become a good auditor of your time.  Practice.  Look back on what you've done.  Analyze what you do? Discern what's worth it. Remote work: Basecamp has 56 employees in 30 cities around the world... Why remote? "You don't want the best people, you want the right people."  The odds of all the right people living near your headquarters is small. The business started in Chicago with three people. They hired DHH to be their first programmer.  He lived in Denmark.  Then they hired someone in Utah.  "It just worked.  We didn't worry about where, just wanted to find the right people." Jason never writes a business plan -- No 1, 3, or 5 year plan.  They work in six week project increments. Why? "Planning is simply guessing.  Setting your course over a guess doesn't seem like a good idea.  We have an idea of where we're headed, but we work in six week chunks." What Jason learned from Jeff Bezos:  "People who were right often changed their minds." --> Be willing to change your mind when better evidence presents itself. The "anti-goal" mindset: "(Financial) Goals are made up. There's nothing about them that's true.  They are guesses... Made up numbers." "Asking if I hit the goal is the wrong question.  Asking if I enjoyed the run is the better question." "One of the problems with setting goals is you are a different person when you set them than when they need to be met."  You grow, evolve, and change. "Too many companies focus on numbers instead of their customers." --> That is because they have number based goals to hit.  It can ruin the customer experience (Jason had a terrible experience trying to cancel his satellite radio service) Qualities Jason looks for when making hiring decisions: Communicate clearly - "You must be a great writer."  Much of their communication is done in writing.  "We look at the cover letter first.  That must be good.  If that's not well written, then we do not look at the resume." Quality of character - "You must be a good person.  We hire people that we want to be with.  No ego.  We like to hire people that use "we" and "us" instead of "I" Must be able to give and take feedback - Need to be coachable.  "For designers, we give them a project to do in the interview process and then we provide them feedback.  If they can't handle it, we will not hire them." Transition from individual contributor to leader... How to do it well? "It is REALLY hard. Very few people are born being good managers." "Come to terms that you can no longer do everything." Advice Jason got from Tobi (CEO of Shopify) - "As the CEO, you are working on longer term strategic initiatives.  You don't get to feel the day-to-day progress that people lower in the organization feel."  Need to get comfortable with that. Some of the benefits at Basecamp: Fully paid vacation every year for all employees ($5K), 3 day weekends all summer, $1K/year in continuing education outside of your job, $100/month for a massage, $100/month gym membership, $2K/year charity match, paid in the top 10% of your salary range as if you lived in San Francisco (even though no employees live in San Francisco) Why do it? "It's the right thing to do.  I wanted to start a business that I wanted to work at.  We're a company that cares about service." "People are not the place to save money.  They are the place to spend money." "Give people their time.  A contiguous block of time every day to do their work."  Don't muddle it up with meetings in the middle of that time. "I'll work hard now so I can relax later" is not the optimal way to live.  Create the habits now to enjoy it as you go.  "Later" is where intentions go to die.  "When calm starts early, calm becomes the habit."

Early on Jason decided to quit his day job and launch a digital marketing agency that grew to a multi-million dollar operation, 100 staff, and they worked with brands from AT&T, Hitachi, and Lotus Cars. After 12 years of growth, he sold the agency in 2012. [52:15] Horror stories from working with clients.  [54:15] Tips from Jason’s exit from his agency.  In this episode… What does it take to build a business that can stand the test of time and regularly deliver impressive results? Is there a magic formula that you need to learn before your business really starts to build some momentum? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from business leader and innovator, Jason Swenk. In his conversation with Jeremy, Jason opens up about his journey with podcasting, how he keeps his team motivated, the value of your personal brand, challenges he has faced along the way, and much more. Make sure you have pen and paper ready - you are going to need it!  Have you ever been in a situation where you had to manage the expectations of your customers or clients? How do you ensure that both your team and your customers are on the same page? According to Jason Swenk, it all comes down that magic word - communication. You could have the best products or services in the world, but it doesn’t mean anything if you fail to communicate what you need from your clients and what they can expect from you and your business. Don’t fall for the same trap that many business leaders find themselves in; make sure to learn the best communication methods available.  Did you know that setting the lowest price in your market could be hurting your business? It’s true! While you might think it is a good idea to become the “Walmart” of your industry - remember, there is always a price to pay. Sure, it’s great that Walmart keeps their prices low, but at what cost? When was the last time you purchased a high-quality product from Walmart? If you want to set your prices low - make sure you understand that some customers will pass you by to go with a more expensive option. What can you learn from Jason’s story?  Don’t you hate it when you find yourself surrounded by a dysfunctional team environment? As a leader, what should you do? Is there a way to avoid toxic hires and keep your team healthy? Jason Swenk is such a strong believer in hiring the right people that he has developed a rigorous screening process that has served him well over the years. While some leaders will find Jason’s vetting process too involved and nuanced - the truth is, he’s had some impressive results. Consider learning from and implementing some of Jason’s standards into your hiring practices; what do you have to lose?  What is your definition of success? Do you want to drive all the nicest cars, or is traveling to exotic destinations more your style? Maybe for you, success is about spending more time with your family. Whatever your view of success, it is going to be different for each leader - everyone has to determine the big “Why” that motivates their drive. Remember, leaders, aren’t the only ones who need to define what success looks like! Jason Swenk has some helpful insights regarding the topic of success.
