When thinking about how he got started Mat muses that he didn't even actually consider himself a business, he considered himself a hobby woodworker. How it really took off was when the local CrossFit gym wanted a CrossFit pile of blocks. Mat took on the project and then requests just kept coming in. Eventually the offerings expanded as requests for tables and benches came in. That's how it really spiraled, as Mat says, it all started from a box. When Mat first started, he didn't have a brand, but he had a connection through his social media and got a branding iron shipped out to him.  In terms of growth Mat says that he feels his story is similar to a lot of wood businesses as he's just been scaling as the work comes in. If someone wants something and he has the tools to do it, he takes on the job, or if it's time to invest in a certain tool he hasn't worked with or when he takes on something he's never done but has the capacity for, he'll take the project and then do some trial and error prototypes before the finished product goes to the customer. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mat Kearney over Zoom video!  Unexpected, unplanned moments often yield the most beautiful results. That’s how Mat Kearney arrived at his sixth album, January Flower, a collection of honest, stripped down songs that brings the Nashville-based, Oregon-born musician back to his singer-songwriter roots. In January of 2019, Mat packed up his recording gear and decamped to an isolated house in Joshua Tree with his childhood friend Marshall Roeman, a painter, and songwriter Eli Teplin. The plan was to use their two weeks in the desert to create with a full recording studio, but a massive storm hit, deluging the area in record rainfall and shutting down their power. With the light of the wood burning stove to guide the way, Mat took the opportunity to explore music from a new angle, armed with only his voice and an acoustic guitar. When Mat returned to Nashville he carried that spirit into the rest of the writing and recording process, re-teaming with his longtime producer Robert Marvin, who also helmed his 2006 breakout Nothing Left To Lose and 2011’s Young Love. The goal was to create songs with no other intention than simply the joy of making music. For Mat, the year-long process was about rediscovering why he loves writing songs in the first place. He brought in several older songs, including “Can’t Look Back” and “Running In Circles,” reimaging them to fit in with the newer work and kept the instrumentation simple. “Pontiac” was inspired by Bruce Hornsby, with the band tracking live to a pop backbeat, while “Stuck In the Moment” emphasize an organic, approachable aesthetic that allows Mat’s emotional vocals to lead the way. January Flower recalls Kearney’s early work on his gold-selling album Nothing Left To Lose, veering in a different direction from his 2018 album CrazyTalk. The album was also inspired by his acoustic tour in the fall of 2019 to promote the 10th anniversary of The City of Black and White, which was the last time Mat was on the road before everything shut down in the pandemic. His vast touring history, which includes treks with John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and NEEDTOBREATHE, is evident in the vibrancy of the songs, as is his enduring success as a recording artist. The musician has released five albums in the Billboard Top 200, with three in the Top 20, and has seen his dynamic songs placed on Grey’s Anatomy, 30 Rock and NCIS. Overall, he has over 2.5 billion global streams. It’s been a long and winding path to where Mat is now, but it’s a journey he’s happy to still be taking. We want to hear from you! Matías Muchnick, NotCo: Building The Future of Food From Chile, Ep 119 Matías Muchnick left the investment banking world in pursuit of a solution that would bring sustainability to the broken food industry. He could not have predicted that a couple of years later he would be training an algorithm to understand humans’ taste preferences to create a plant-based mayonnaise that would appeal to the mass market.    In 2015, Matías cofounded NotCo, a food tech company that is using AI to take animals out of the equation in the production of milk, cheese, eggs, and meat. Just eight months after launching their first product in 2017, NotCo achieved 8% market share of the total mayo category in Chile in the first stores they launched in, a country that has ranked third in mayo consumption per capita in the world.   I sat down with Matías to talk about his experience in the investment banking world, starting a vegan food startup in 2012 and, ultimately, his decision to leave the company. We also discuss his transformative experience in the US where he connected with his current co-founders, then getting accepted into IndieBio, and eventually raising money from Kaszek Ventures and Jeff Bezos. Matías also talks about his most recent round of funding and preparations for launching in the US. “R&D in the food industry was operating on coal”   Inspired by other entrepreneurs’ stories, Matías left his job as an investment banker and started thinking about what he wanted to do next. He had always been curious about the food industry but didn’t fully understand it. As a finance major, he likened it to the subprime crisis of 2008, where there was a disconnect between companies and customers who were buying and selling products they didn’t understand. At the time, the consumer was also changing, demanding a more sustainable way of producing food. Matías realized that what the food industry needed was disruption.   Learn more about why Matías decided he wanted to disrupt the food industry in this episode of Crossing Borders. Cutting animals out of the equation When Matías realized that the next step to advance his vision was to invest in technology, he immersed himself in the world of food, science, and entrepreneurship. During his postgraduate program at UC Berkeley, he became close to the biotech department where he learned about how the pharmaceutical industry was innovating using machine learning. That’s when Matías started questioning how these technologies could be applied to the food industry. He started surrounding himself with extremely qualified scientists including his co-founders Karim and Pablo, who were curious to explore this uncharted territory in the food space.   Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about how Matías formed his founding team and got started with NotCo. Breaking the biotech barrier in Latam’s VC industry Matías and his co-founders had been bootstrapping NotCo when they received a call from Ryan Bethencourt, the former Program Director at IndieBio. Ryan offered them a waiver to get into the prestigious biotech accelerator, which they hadn’t even applied for because they thought they had zero chance of getting in. Under IndieBio’s spotlight, NotCo became the first startup to receive a term sheet before Demo Day, and got the attention of Kaszek Ventures, who instantly became interested in their industry and invested in their Series A and subsequent rounds.   Find out more about NotCo’s growth trajectory and milestones they have achieved over the years in this episode of Crossing Borders, including becoming the first Latam startup Jeff Bezos invested in.    Matías Muchnick is revolutionizing the way in which we think about food through NotCo’s vision for food production that is sustainable and efficient. The next generation of consumers is already changing, and Matías is making sure that the food industry continues to innovate to accompany that change.   Outline of this episode: [2:16] - About NotCo [7:46] - Becoming an entrepreneur [14:24] - Reaction of friends and family [16:22] - The breaking point with Eggless [19:50] - NotCo’s inflection point [25:07] - How NotCo raised money from Jeff Bezos and Top VCs [31:14] - Next steps after raising $85M in a Series C  [34:55] - Advice to Matías’ younger self [36:37] - Books, blogs, and podcast recommendations   Resources & people mentioned: Matías Muchnick Karim Pichara Pablo Zamora Eduardo Bendek NotCo Eggless Documentaries: Cowspiracy, What the Health Impossible Foods Beyond Burger UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology Harvard Business School Stanford IndieBio Ryan Bethencourt Kaszek Ventures The Craftory Elio Leoni Sceti Jeff Bezos L Catterton Future Positive Books: Hard Things About Hard Things

HE LEARNED THERE'S NO APPEAL FROM VIGILANTE LAW! Mat Karney knew the score in Toltec Valley. A man needed enough land and water for his cattle or he was through. When Mat's neighbor, Big Tom Parks, began sneaking in nesters, a showdown was inevitable. Especially when Parks had the Law in his vest pocket. But Mat never figured that the blow-off would have the savage ferocity of a maddened herd on a rampage. Nor did he expect to find himself hunted by hardcases and deputies alike. Then there were two prairie women; one loved him, one hated him. Both had reason to want him dead. This is a thundering novel of the authentic West that will grip you―it ranks with the best. In it you will meet: Mat Karney: He knew that the only language men understood in Toltec Valley was gun talk. Big Tom Parks: He was adept at getting around the law because he'd paid to drill its loopholes. Sally Flandreu: When her Pa passed, she took on a man's job raising her family and running the homestead — even though she knew hot lead might be the payoff. Tex Smith: This deputy was Tom Park's top gunhand, tied to his boss by unseen ropes. Juanita Evans: This south-of-the-border fireball could give any man a burn; but her heart burned for Mat — whether he wanted it or not. Jerry Hackett: He had a special talent for gun-play — especially from the back. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this fifth episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and Social Mediology founder Kate vanderVoort has a conversation with Mat Bowtell from  Free 3D Hands (http://www.free3dhands.org/) . ABOUT MAT and FREE 3D HANDS A senior engineer at Toyota, Mat Bowtell has spent more than a decade figuring out ways to improve processes, make things more efficient, and reduce waste. When Mat’s former employer announced their closure, it became a time of real reflection for him. He asked himself a simple question: "If money did not exist—and if we completely eliminated money from the equation—what would I do with my life?" (6:51) When Toyota closed in 2017, he put his passion for bionics to good use. Through his registered charity, Free 3D Hands, Mat and his team now utilize 3D printing technology to make free assistive devices for individuals who need them. BIG IDEA 1 “Is there a way that I can use my engineering skills during this time to do something positive and give back to society?” (8:16) Tapping back into his love for bionics, Mat’s vision was a simple one: To make one hand for one kid. After testing out a million-dollar bionic hand during a scholarship at Japan’s Chiba University, his eyes lit up by what it could do. This technology could read the signals in your hand, as well as open and close. At the same time, he was really saddened as he realized that “this million-dollar arm probably won’t ever filter down to the people who really need it most.” (8:00) In 2014, Mat volunteered for a small group in the US called Enabled. Initially, the hands he made were open source designs. After collaborating with designers from all over the world, he found that some of their designs could be improved significantly. His background in engineering made him ask questions like, “How do we make things stronger? How do we make them more aesthetic? How do we reduce the noise? How do we make them more adaptable?” He started to design things that weren’t yet being made, and began to share those ideas with the group so that the community could accelerate and improve this technology to make them more accessible. BIG IDEA 2 “The ultimate goal for me is for every child, every person in this world, to have access to devices that are going to improve their quality of life.” (14:47) Mat’s vision for Free 3D Hands is not to disrupt and dominate. He’s not after the whole pie, and has no intentions of manufacturing for the whole world. Instead, he wants to encourage other bionic developers and prosthetists around the world to find smarter ways to do things. As he shares, “I want the world to start focusing on those that don’t have access to assisted technology.” (15:32) For Mat, the beautiful thing about 3D printing and making designs open source is that he’s able to encourage others to innovate. He’s able to enable and empower communities—from prosthetic clinics to individual makers with no access to skilled workforce—to make and access this sort of technology. It’s also a very low-waste process. With less waste, there’s a real opportunity to make it at a lower cost and make it more accessible. BIG IDEA 3 “They are not prosthetics—they are tools.”  (22:24). The term ‘disability’ has a negative connotation to it. To Mat, it’s about our mindset. “It’s not about fixing somebody.” (21:14) If a person has a condition, questions that should be asked are 'How can we enhance your ability?' and 'How can we give you new opportunities?' “We’re all beautifully different.” (21:34) Through Free 3D Hands, Mat and his team are able to create assistive devices for able-bodied people to hold and achieve something that they couldn’t do before. The tools they create enable people to try new things, or perform a new task—from holding small objects, using a skipping rope, playing the piano or drums or throwing a ball....

For Mat Poovan, the path to his dreams was filled with unexpected twists and turns. He always had lofty ambitions and a clear path to follow to achieve his goals. But, on the road to some of those goals, Mat found his true passion: Indian classical music. Specifically, it was the sitar that grabbed his attention. Mat discovered the sitar quite by accident, while attending class and studying ancient India. His teacher played Indian classical music in the background and the rest, as they say, is history. From there, Mat pursued his passion for music, but it was balanced with some other passions - creating a full life of being a business consultant by day and a talented musician by night. TWEET: Discovering your #dreams when you least expect to, on this episode of #ChasingDreams Following his path - even though it was unexpected. When Mat started school, he had already been studying the sitar for several years. He knew he had to be more practical about school, so he decided to major in political science with a minor in economics. Mat’s end goal was to become an ambassador eventually. As his passion for music grew, Mat’s goals in political science shifted. He made some changes so that he could pursue both passions - changing his major and eventually discovered instructional design. His passion for instructional design would pave the way for a solid career as a business consultant, while allowing Mat the freedom to pursue music in his downtime. Finding your true passion and pursuing it with all that you’ve got. Mat discusses his passion for instructional design and walks us down the path of discovering the sitar at a young age, and how he ended up with his first instrument. Once Mat set his sights on learning the sitar, everything fell into place around it. He found a local teacher who was an expert in Indian classical music and he was able to develop his skills over the years. His love of the sitar and Indian classical music as a whole was clear - and Mat eventually found himself being encouraged to become a teacher. This led to many new opportunities in the music industry, including his work with the Indian Academy of Music & Fine Arts and his work with the record label Aimrec. TWEET: When it comes to #pursuing your #passion, you have to go after it with all that you’ve got Being a trendsetter in the realm of Indian Classical Music. Mat gives us insight into his connection to Indian classical music and how he knew - instantly - that this was a path he needed to follow. He also discusses how uncommon it is to find an American-born Indian who plays the sitar. In reality, Mat had become a trendsetter and was blazing a trail for budding musicians who wanted to follow his path. He discusses his goals within music, as well as his other career in industrial design, and shares insight into some “bucket list” items he’d like to conquer. One of his bucket list items? To record an album and eventually win a Grammy. Mat believes in dreaming big, and that’s just what he does. The key to following your dreams? Just start. As Aimee and Mat close out their chat, they discuss the value of setting huge goals in order to propel yourself forward. Mat offers advice to fellow dream chasers who are ready to pursue their dreams. The key to his advice? Just start. Mat’s all about planning and making sure you know the steps that will help you achieve your goal. But, according to Mat, the most important thing is to just start. Mat also discusses some other dreams, including playing a huge venues like The Kennedy Center and someday building a house.
