Here's what you'll discover in this episode: In this episode of Biographers in Conversation Ashleigh Wilson chats with Gabriella about his book: A Year with Wendy Whiteley: Conversations About Art, Life and Gardening. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Ashleigh Wilson shares his inspiration for writing A Year with Wendy Whiteley: Conversations About Art, Life and Gardening and why he refers to the book as a conversational portrait rather than as a biography. Ashleigh explains why he opened the book with a detailed description of Wendy Whiteley's kitchen table. He discloses why he framed each chapter around a particular topic and why he kept returning to the kitchen table as the central anchor. Ashleigh reveals how knowing Wendy Whiteley influenced how he portrayed her and the complexities of writing about a living subject. He also outlines the novelistic devices he employed to evoke an authentic portrayal of Australia's art world in the 1960s and 70s, and the extent to which he interpreted Wendy's character and behaviour versus providing facts and clues and leaving it to readers to form their own interpretations. https://biographersinconversation.com Facebook: Share Your Life Story Linkedin: Gabriella Kelly Davies Instagram: Biographersinconversation
Chair: Katrina Strickland Wendy Whiteley has long been responsible for Brett Whiteley's legacy, but she is also an artist in her own right and an important figure in the Australian art world. How does the role of 'keeper of the flame' impact on the inheritor of that task? Should we separate Brett Whiteley and his behavior from his art? Ashleigh Wilson talks about his year-long conversation with Wendy Whiteley and what he discovered about one of our most iconic 'brothers of the brush'. Event details: Thu 09 Mar, 3:45pm on the West Stage
A great interview has range and depth, humour and pathos, and who better to deliver that than Wendy Whiteley, former wife of the late artist Brett Whiteley and creator of Wendy's Secret Garden in Sydney's Lavender Bay, in discussion with her friend, journalist Ashleigh Wilson, who has just written a book – A year with Wendy: Conversations about Art – to be released next week by Text Publishing. In this episode, Whiteley opens up about everything from the way great women are hidden within our histories (including her own), to the “sex, drugs and rock'n'roll" of 1960s London and New York, to the rubbish dump out the front of her home in Lavender Bay that she turned into a heritage-listed garden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Australian soprano Julie Lea Goodwin has been one of our busiest singers since she joined Opera Australia in 2015. Last year alone, she performed an extraordinary range of roles: Maria in West Side Story on Sydney Harbour, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Musetta in La Bohème, and Madame Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims. She also impressively created the role of Wendy Whiteley in the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin's opera, Whiteley. In this interview with our Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini, Julie Lea talks about handling such diverse repertoire, making her way to opera via musical theatre, and what attracts her to certain roles. She also offers a special preview of The Merry Widow, which she'll be starring in at the Sydney Opera House in January 2021.

The new documentary feature, WHITELEY is a visual journey into the private life and creative legacy of Australia’s most iconic artist, Brett Whiteley, told 'in his own words' using personal letters, notebooks and photographs, interwoven with reconstructions, animations, archival interviews and rare footage. At only 32 years of age, Natasha Bieniek has been awarded the Wynne prize for landscape painting, the Portia Geach Memorial award for portrait painting and the Metro art award, has been a five time finalist in the Archibald prize, a three time finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait prize and has been shortlisted in many others. Impressive as that is, what's more amazing about Bieniek’s work is its size. Her winning Wynne prize painting 'Biophilia' was only 9cm square and her portrait of Wendy Whiteley, which was highly commended by the trustees in the 2016 Archibald prize, is only 13.5cm x 18.5cm. She is without doubt a master of the miniature. Bieniek has exhibited in six solo shows, across Australia and overseas, and in many group shows. The National Portrait Gallery held an exhibition in 2014, ‘In the Flesh’, where 14 of her miniature portraits were included, borrowed from private collections. In our conversation, Bieniek reveals how it was not all smooth sailing at the beginning and talks about how nature in the urban environment has inspired her work. She also provides details about her process which reveal the intensive labour involved in creating her exquisite paintings.
