Act II builds on the suspense and burgeoning relationship between Rodolfo and Mimi, newfound neighbors and bohemian lovers in the Latin quarter of Paris. Their spark of divine love is juxtaposed with the contrasting passion and suffering of Marcello and Musetta, the latter whose adulterous liaison serves as the locus of lustful competition, jealousy, and spite. Such destructive tendencies are representative of our collective humanity's consequent obsession with carnal desire and adultery, symbolized in Revelations as the scarlet whore who entices the multitudes with false prophecy and blind promises that lead to intense affliction. See how spiritual initiates like Puccini warned against following blind passion and the ways to recognize salvation within oneself: the path of chastity or sexual purity within the perfect matrimony.
The Royal Ballet and Opera House in London continue their programme of access to their productions for blind and partially sighted people with both live and recorded audio description for their current production of Puccini's La Bohème from 18 December 2024 into January 2025. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined by Principal Guest Conductor Designate - Speranza Scappucci, freelance Audio Describer - Julia Grundy and Paul Adams - Access manager at The Royal Opera House for an overview to the story of La Bohème, what blind and partially sighted people might expect from either attending the live audio described performance on Wednesday 18 December 2024 at 7.30pm with a touch tour at 6.30pm or from the recorded audio description at the remaining performances throughout December and into January 2025. About Puccini's La Bohème Set in 19th-century Paris, La Bohème is about the lives of a group of struggling young artists. Based on Henry Murger's novel Scenes de la vie de Bohème, the opera follows a love story between a poet named Rodolfo and Mimi, a seamstress, as they are forced to face the challenges of Mimi's declining health and the realities of living in Paris' Latin Quarter during the 1830s. The relationships and hardships faced by the pair along with their friends Marcello and Musetta are explored, alongside the effects of poverty, illness and youthful passion. A poignant take on the fleeting nature of happiness, La Bohème is an everlasting tale of tragic romance.
Escuchar audio
A Dutch South African, Musetta Vander was raised without that most basic of modern conveniences--television! Radio programming, childhood books and weekend trips to the drive-in introduced her to the magical world of movies. It was not until the mid-'70s that South Africa finally got television, and the big black box in the family living room "miraculously" sprang to life. However, as the daughter of a ballet teacher, Musetta was no stranger to the entertainment world and debuted on stage at the age of four. Shortly after her arrival, she became part of the very world she used to host, appearing as the "dream girl" in more than 20 music videos for such top recording artists as Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Tina Turner, Elton John and Chris Isaak. It was her critically acclaimed stage performance in the original South African play "Soweto's Burning", about the trials of an interracial friendship in that racially segregated country, that provided her transition to the big screen. Musetta has since performed in numerous feature films, including collaborating with her husband on Under the Hula Moon and Gunshy. She has also worked alongside such screen veterans as Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh and Will Smith in Wild Wild West, George Clooney and John Turturro in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and John Hurt and Louis Gossett Jr. in Monolith. She's also added a slew of television credits to her arsenal, including guest appearances on the hit shows Star Trek: Voyager, Frasier, Xena, Babylon 5, Highlander, Stargate SG-1 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Soprano Julie Lea Goodwin performs across opera, musical theatre, and classical cross-over. She has played Musetta in La Bohème and Maria in West Side Story for Opera Australia. She performed opposite Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera, and has sung as a soloist with many of Australia's Symphony Orchestras. With Christmas in the air, she'll be joining the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs for Carols at the House for three concerts from 15th to the 17th of December in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Julie Lea knew she wanted to be a performer from a very early age, and tells stories of singing to the horses on the family's property out of Brisbane and enjoying the old Hollywood musicals on video. She charts her carer from her remarkable early break as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, through making her debut with Opera Australia and singing with orchestras and ensembles around the country.
It's time for my fourth annual April Fools Day episode! The first one that I published exactly four years ago, entitled Alternate Universe Bel Canto, has proven to be one of my most popular, and one that was the gateway episode for many of my most devoted listeners. Furthermore, this one came specifically at the request of one of my newest Patreon supporters (hint, hint to those of you who are not yet supporting the podcast there!) Instead of an overview of all those “outsider music” opera singers out there, I have chosen to focus in on three sopranos in particular whom I find to be the most original, entertaining: Mari Lyn (AKA Marilyn Sussman), Olive Middleton (AKA Olive Townend), and Natália de Andrade. Each of these women created her own platform. Mari Lyn was the Singing Hostess of the 1980s New York-based cable network series The Golden Treasury of Song. After a career in the 1920s singing roles such as Musetta under Thomas Beecham at Covent Garden, British soprano Olive Middleton became, much later in life, the lead diva of New York's La Puma Opera Company, giving quixotic performances with that company well into her seventies (and well past her vocal expiration date!), performances that gained her a fanbase that included lead singers of the Metropolitan Opera as well as the fussiest of opera queens. And the Portuguese soprano Natália de Andrade (my favorite!) gained fame and notoriety in her native country and beyond for her self-financed recordings, particularly the late-career ones published in the 1980s, which gained her the grudging respect given to those most deluded of holy fools. And lest one think that this episode deals only with sopranos, I also give a nod to the raucous-voiced American mezzo-soprano Sylvia Sawyer, who appeared in the 1950s on complete opera recordings issued on the Capitol Records label and produced, incredibly, under the auspices of the Rome Opera. To be clear: though I find each of these deluded divas to be, each in her own distinctive way, hilarious, in the end, each of them earns my respect for her enterprising undertakings, her firm belief in her own talent, and her unique approach to tuning, phrasing, and language, here perpetrated exclusively on the music of Giuseppe Verdi, who must surely be turning over in his grave right about now! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Sir Malcolm Walker is the chairman and co-founder of the frozen food supermarket chain Iceland. He was brought up in Grange Moor, West Yorkshire. He was just 14 when his father died, and he helped his mother run a smallholding, driving a tractor and ploughing fields. His business instinct kicked in during his teenage years, when he promoted Saturday night dances by booking bands into local church halls. After receiving rejections from Marks & Spencer and Littlewoods, he became a trainee manager at Woolworths, and recalls that he started at the very bottom, sweeping the floors for many months before gradually winning promotions and moving round the country. In 1970, he and Peter Hinchcliffe, a colleague from Woolworths, opened a shop in Oswestry, selling loose frozen food from chest freezers. The business soon began to take off, Malcolm and Peter were both fired by Woolworths, and Malcolm went on to build a company which now has more than 1000 stores in the UK and Ireland. Along the way, boardroom battles led to his departure in the early 2000s, but he later returned and Iceland is now back in family ownership. Alongside his business pursuits, Malcolm has been a fundraiser for dementia charities, after his wife was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. She died in 2021 after more than 50 years of marriage. He was knighted in 2017, has three children, one of whom also works in the family business, and he married for the second time in August last year. When she moved to Los Angeles in 2017, Melissa's business boomed, reaching a larger audience. She started servicing the entertainment industry and local farmers' markets, turning Grandma Ruth's Pies into a year-round operation. She currently sells online, offering local delivery in Los Angeles and the Hamptons and flash-frozen pies shipped nationally. Some crowd favorites are the Vegan Apple Crumble Pie and Chocolate Cream Pie. Grandma Ruth's Pies bring families together with fresh, handmade, natural ingredients molded by skilled hands into perfection. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjarding MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews. This week Vidar is reviewing the audio described performance of English National Opera's production of Puccini's La bohème at the Coliseum in London. This is a slightly different accessible performance as there was no live through audio description however, more enhanced recorded described introductory notes were played out through headsets 15 minutes before curtain up with more recorded notes played during the intervals between each of the acts provided by Sightlines Audio Describer Willie Elliot. Puccini's La bohème is one of the most famous operas ever written, following the unforgettable story of two young, bohemian lovers in Paris. With a great love story comes a beautiful score, including arias like Musetta's Waltz and ‘Yes, they call me Mimì' (Si, mi chiamano Mimì). La bohème is Vidar's favourite opera and one he has seen many times over the years and Vidar began by telling Toby how the enhanced introductory notes helped him with his understanding of the look and feel to the costumes and set of ENO production of La bohème. Vidar also explained how the enhanced notes differed from the usual introductory notes that he normally receives for other audio described performances. With Vidar knowing La bohème so well it more than likely helped with his understanding and enjoyment of this production with no through audio description and Vidar noted how much he does rely on the live through audio description for a full understanding of the theatre productions he attends at many theatres around the country. Vidar summed up by saying that as he knows La bohème so well he was able to enjoy this production with just the enhanced introductory notes however, he would not normally have as an enjoyable and full filled experience without the live through audio description. Although if you were very familiar with a theatre show you might be able to have a good experience with just the enhanced introductory notes but that is no substitute for the full AD experience; intro notes, touch tour and the live through description.

In this episode I will visit with my dear friends, Julie Wyma and Anastasia Nikolov, founders of Opera Programs Berlin. Both Julie and Anastasia went through traditional conservatory training, and were both taken aback by the insistence that there's only one prescribed path to success in opera. Their answer to filling the gaps in vocal education was to create http://www.operaprogramsberlin.com (Opera Programs Berlin,) an online and in-person opera academy which has grown exponentially over the last year in the online space. As an educator, Julie's passion lies in helping singers make the transition from student to professional, and in guiding talented people to the places where they are needed. She has served as a vocal coach, preparing singers for auditions and talent competitions, as well as an audition panelist and advisor. With organizations such as Opera Programs Berlin, Dramatic Voices Program Berlin, Irrational Entertainment, Midwest Early Opera Works, Voci Inglesi, Berlin Wagner Gruppe and Berliner Opernverein, she has facilitated performance opportunities for singers seeking additional stage experience and the chance to hone their craft in a supportive, professional environment. As a professional operatic soprano she has performed more than 25 roles, including die Königin der Nacht and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Rosina in I barbiere di Siviglia, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Gilda in Rigoletto, Marie in Die verkaufte Braut, Musetta in La Bohème, Sophie in Werther, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, the Waldvogel in Siegfried, and Norina in Don Pasquale. Of her Norina, the Kansas City Metropolis said: “soprano Julie Wyma sparkled with a self-confident air and a strong, beautiful voice.” An active concert performer and recitalist, her recent appearances include concerts at the US Consul General in Düsseldorf and the Residence of the US Ambassador to Germany in Berlin; a song recital at the University of Pittsburg at Greensburg; Lovers' Quarrels, a concert of operatic duets and arias in Concord, New Hampshire and Niemegk, Germany; Three Tenors and a Soprano concerts in Cornish and New London, New Hampshire; and Viva Divas!, a concert of operatic arias, duets, and trios in Cornish, New Hampshire, Phoenix, Arizona and Berlin, Germany. Soprano Anastasia Nikolov started her musical training at the age of 5, studying piano. She was a member of the Bulgarian National Theater Youth Ensemble, where she was cast in numerous main stage and touring productions. Her training at the National Theatre included acting, improvisation, Latin and folk dance. Other musical studies also included percussion and classical guitar. Ms. Nikolov is a champion of new music. She has premiered works by prominent American and British composers such as Vartan Aghababian, Michael Djupstrom, Victoria Ellis, Heather Gilligan and Eric Sawyer; some of these works were written and dedicated to her. In addition to numerous song cycles and solo concert works with orchestra, she also created the role of Anna von Mildenburg in the new piece Geboren Alma Schindler (Berliner Opern Verein); the role of Member of the Chamber in the premiere performance of Eric Sawyer's Our American Cousin (Composers in Red Sneakers); and the title role in the world premiere of Victoria Ellis' opera Darling (One of Us Foundation). Today I am talking to soprano Henriikka Gröndahl. In our chat we discuss how career trajectories can change over time and the possible influence of relationships and parenthood on negotiating a singing career. Henriikka Gröndahl is a versatile lyric soprano with one foot firmly in the chorus of the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, and the other foot happily freelancing. Her career began with a boom at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 2004, when she stepped in as the cover of Mimì in La Bohème. She sang a total of 11 performances of it for Scottish Opera – both at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. During her first years out of college, she also sang Pamina for British Youth Opera and Papagena (covering Pamina) for Garsington Opera, followed by a Pamina , Nannetta, Musetta and Julia at Gothenburg Opera in Sweden, Musetta and Princesse at the Royal Opera in Sweden and Fünfte Magd at Liceu in Barcelona, Fiordiligi for Samling Opera and Donna Elvira at Scottish Opera. She has since then stepped in at short notice to sing Liù at Gothenburg opera, Jorun at Vadstena Summer Academy and Olympia/Giulietta/Antonia/ at Folkoperan, where she later also performed Liù. Her latest role was Euredice (Gluck) at Norrlandsoperan, as well as small obscure solo bits and pieces at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Her career has led her to sing in many countries around Europe, and she frequently performs at chamber music festivals and oratorios, but is nowadays also old enough to engage in other non music related activities like hiking, paddling, hanging out with friends and family, painting, throwing dinner parties and passionately enjoying life!www.henriikkagrondahl.com

Check out episode 13 with Kelli, where we discuss opera, gaming, Terry Pratchett, letting yourself be ridiculous, and lots more! Kelli Butler (known online as The Opera Geek) is a professional opera singer, aria slinging mercenary, and Actual Bard. * She is an award-winning (actually, not just from my mom) opera soprano whose roles include Queen of the Night, Hanna Glawari, Musetta, Violetta, and more. When not performing - say, during a pandemic - she can be found playing games on her twitch channel or appearing in a multitude of other TTRPG/D&D shows, including the new campaign "Let's get Wildemount!", set in the Critical role universe. Kelli is the co-author of the best-selling College of the Opera bard subclass for bards, which can be found on the DMsGuild. She lives in NY with her husband Justin and their two very irrational pets, Bones and Scotty.

Last year alone, she performed an extraordinary range of roles: Maria in West Side Story on Sydney Harbour, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Musetta in La Bohème, and Madame Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims. She also impressively created the role of Wendy Whiteley in the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin's opera, Whiteley. In this interview with our Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini, Julie Lea talks about handling such diverse repertoire, making her way to opera via musical theatre, and what attracts her to certain roles. She also offers a special preview of The Merry Widow, which she'll be starring in at the Sydney Opera House in January 2021.

Vocalist, Thought Leader, Songwriter, Theatre/Film Producer, and Innovator in Music Education. Alena Bernardi grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan in a grey brick house that stood on a dirt road with 3 acres of land. In the evenings, as a child, Alena would listen to her mother stumble through and eventually master traditional piano classics from Beethoven to Debussy, while her father would read science fiction novels to her and her brother in the bedroom across the house. At seven, Alena finally had begged her mom and dad enough for lessons that they signed her up. It was around then that the Phantom of the Opera was in the midst of touring around the states, and, at a request to her mother to accompany her in the 2nd grade talent show singing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic, Angel of Music, Alena was off to developing an addiction to the style that perfectly blends musical theatre and classical music. Alena co-founded Unicorn Music Academy in January 2020 to open up the young people’s hearts and minds to the music around them and give them the tools they ned to organize their ideas and create freely. Credits include: Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, Musetta in La Boheme, Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, Lily Garland in On The Twentieth Century, and Rapunzel in Into the Woods.
