In Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Part 1, we learned that CTE is a neurodegenerative disease caused by repetitive cumulative brain injury. Patients suffer from debilitating mental health symptoms and may even have suicidal thoughts or actions. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for this disease and it can only be official diagnosed at autopsy (after death). The only successful strategy to combat this illness is prevention. Unfortunately, this is an ongoing challenge as there is a lot we don't know about CTE but some features are clear. The largest risk factor for CTE is the duration of time participating in contact sport. In order to prevent CTE, the aim is to reduce life time exposure to repeated head impacts (either direct or indirect ie. significant acceleration and deceleration injuries). We also delve into grass-roots education aimed at informing school-aged children about concussion and brain health. This Medical Life podcast is available on all podcasting services and Spotify. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, March 2 A Raleigh County mine service weathers difficulties to come back stronger than ever…Every business has a story--what's yours? Trade reps want to help you become a better exporter…and discover the hidden treasures of Moundsville…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Falcon Mine Service, a provider of cutting tools, drills, and bit products, started serving the West Virginia coal mining industry in 2001. Founder Darrell Green began the business as a one-man show and built a strong multi-million-dollar business, despite battling cancer twice. Along the way, he met Clint Henderson and realized they had common interests. Their partnership led to business expansion, and they began selling wear parts instead of just bits. In 2021 the business suffered a huge blow when Green passed from COVID-19. His daughter, Amanda Green, and wife, Ceretha Green, worked with Henderson to continue Green's legacy. It started with three key relationships: Workforce West Virginia directed them to WV Hive, which in turn connected them with Robert C. Byrd Institute. Among the three, Falcon now had the support it needed. The business purchased a CNC lathe machine so workers could begin manufacturing parts. This enabled them to hire a machinist. “Prayerfully, our goals are to continue with the mining industry, to vertically integrate the business to be our own manufacturer, and to hire another machinist so we can continue to expand,” Amanda Green said. By reconsidering their business, finding more economical sources for supplies, and producing items for themselves, the small but mighty team on a hilltop in Midway did over $3 million in sales last year. If only you had a way to get people's attention. But here's the truth: Trying to get your customer's attention in a noisy and crowded marketplace is a losing battle. Instead of focusing on ways to grab their attention, the key to success is to find ways to keep it. And that's where storytelling can help. A clear narrative that communicates your business' story in such an emotionally resonant way, will not only help you connect with potential customers on a deeper level, it will do wonders for building trust and loyalty and, if all goes well, drive more sales. Contact the West Virginia Department of Economic Development to learn more. Our trade experts want to help you tell your story, become a better exporter and enjoy business success. There are dozens of main streets like this — Rust Belt towns with a lot of history and hometown charm. That's how Moundsville appears at first glance, at least. Unlike many similar places, Moundsville has a half-dozen destinations hidden in plain sight — unexpected treasures that you'll be stunned to find in this particular corner of the world. The most remarkable of these marvels is, undoubtedly, the Palace of Gold, the centerpiece of the community of New Vrindaban. The Grave Creek Mound — which gives the city of Moundsville its name — is a burial mound built by the area's indigenous population sometime around 200 B.C.E. Look east from the top of the mound, and you'll see an imposing, stately structure: The former West Virginia Penitentiary, now the site of historical tours, haunted attractions and filming locations. The aptly named Grand Vue Park (grandvuepark.com) offers treetop villas and views of the region — observed while hurtling down a zipline on one of eight adventure courses. When our children get upset, most of us get upset too. If the child is angry at us, we feel defensive; like the child's feelings are unwarranted. If he's upset at something else, we want to make him feel better, to make the emotions go away as quickly as possible. The art of emotion coaching is a parenting technique that helps children understand their feelings. When parents emotion coach, their children learn how emotions work and how to react to feelings in healthy ways. This starts by recognizing your child’s feelings. Many parents are able to see the positive emotions a child expresses, but drawing close to a child who is angry or sad can take some practice. While it takes effort to teach your child about feelings and appropriate behaviors, it is time well spent. Your relationship with your child will be stronger and your child will be more prepared for the challenges life can bring. In today's episode we are joined by Amanda Green, who works with Jake at Zephyr Wellness as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Amanda's focus is on children, age three to 10 in play and has knowledge in creating behavior plans to help parents out at home with their children. Today’s show is brought to you by Audible. A new production of Kiss Me, Kate is on Broadway now. It features Cole Porter’s memorable music and Kelli O’Hara and Will Chase as Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham, a bickering divorced couple thrown together when they’re booked to star in a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. But 1948’s Kiss Me, Kate also duplicates the sexism of the Shakespeare play at its center. You aren’t alone if you’re wondering, “Does Kiss Me, Kate work in 2019?” We asked Will Chase and Amanda Green. Chase (TV’s Nashville and Broadway’s Something Rotten) stars in the production as Fred Graham, Kiss Me, Kate’s Petruchio figure. Amanda Green is the Tony-nominated lyricist and composer who wrote additional material for the production, a key decision-maker when it came to updating the musical’s book and lyrics. Chase and Green talk to Barbara Bogaev about wrestling with Kiss Me, Kate treatment of women and finding the love at the heart of its script.

To be honest, a lot of it stems from feeling like I'm in a good place with my body and my diet that sometimes knowing less is actually better for me. That being said, this show isn't just about me and I think it's important to jump into topics that I may not implement but could be helpful to other people. So today Dr. Josh Axe (yes - THE Dr. Axe!) is on the show today talking about the keto diet, intermittent fasting and how to tackle inflammation through diet. Fair warning: This episode may be triggering to people with a history of an eating disorder or who may be sensitive to diet talk. Weight-loss is mentioned and using diets to lose weight is a topic of conversation. While I do my best to try to keep this space body positive, I also am not here to edit my guests and I think it's important I keep an open mind with every interview, even if I don't necessarily agree. BUT one of the best parts of not agreeing with someone is also seeing how you can maintain respect for one another and meet each other in the middle. Some other things we discussed: Who should be doing the keto diet? Ten down-on-their-luck Texans gather on a car lot to compete for a cherry red Nissan pickup. They must lay their gloved hands upon the truck and, except for scheduled breaks every six hours, never let go. The last person standing wins. That’s the premise behind Hands on a Hardbody, a 2012 musical now in its Bay Area premiere run at Napa’s Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. Based on a 1997 documentary that followed 24 contestants in an actual endurance competition, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright trimmed the number of contestants to ten and Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Amanda Green composed a Tony-nominated score to tell their backstories. For those who don’t think there’s enough here for a full-length musical, Benny Perkins (Brian Watson) makes it clear to the audience that it’s a “Human Kind of Thing”, and then each contestant explains what they’d do “If I Had This Truck”. Benny’s won the contest before but since lost the truck and his wife. Ronald (Michael David Smith) thinks his all-Snickers diet is the ticket to victory (he’s mistaken.) J. D. (Barry Martin) sees the truck as a way to regain his virility. Greg (Ryan Hook) and Kelli (Kirstin Pieschke) meet cute and then make plans to drive away to Hollywood together. Janis (Lucinda Hitchcok Cone) is doing it for her kids. Jesus (Alex Gomez) could use some help putting himself through veterinary school. Chris (Michael Scott Wells) is a military vet who’s looking to make his son proud. Heather (Jenny Angell) may have the inside track, but Norma (Daniela Innocenti Beem) has God on her side. Benny is the ostensible lead, but it’s a true ensemble piece with each character, including the non-contestants involved (spouses, the car dealers, a radio DJ) having their moments. Credit to director Taylor Bartolucci for assembling a talented, diverse cast to explore the themes beneath the surface and to choreographer Staci Arriaga for figuring out how to make the cast move with one hand attached to a truck at all times (well, mostly.) By the way, the truck is on rollers and is frequently spun by the cast, so no one section of the audience spends the bulk of the show staring at the back end of a truck (or cast member.) Musical director Craig Burdette leads a four-piece band in the heavily country and western-influenced score whose musical highlight is the raucous gospel number “Joy of the Lord”. Basically, it’s A Chorus Line with a truck and at two and a half hours it runs a bit long, but by the end you’ll be giving a hand to this Hardbody. ‘Hands on a Hardbody' plays Thursdays through Sundays through June 17 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. Thursday performances are at 7pm; Fridays and Saturdays are at 8pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to www.luckypennynapa.com
In today's episode I sit down with my personal yoga therapy mentor and primary teacher, Amanda Green. Amanda candidly discusses her journey with faith and challenges she faced in her marriage. She also shares how engaging with her yoga practice and undergoing the process of yoga therapy helped her to see both her faith journey and her relationship with her husband with fresh eyes. Amanda took her first yoga class in 2001 and has been practicing ever since. After moving from Seattle to Austin in 2010, she enrolled in a hatha yoga teacher-training program and soon after completion, she began teaching yoga full-time. Amanda met her teacher and mentor, Chase Bossart in 2011 and her yoga practice took a turn toward a more gentle and therapeutic approach and her yoga study expanded to embrace the broader teachings of yoga. Yogic philosophy and texts, practices including āsana (postures), prāṇāyāma (breathing techniques), meditation, vedic chanting and the practical application of the tools of yoga for therapy are all a part of Amanda’s ongoing practice and study. Amanda has over 15 years of personal yoga practice, 2,000+ teaching hours and more than 1,200 hours of yoga training. She is a graduate of the YATNA yoga therapy training program, and a certified IAYT yoga therapist. Amanda lives in Austin, TX with her two daughters, husband, and extended family. She paints, dances, reads, writes and gardens. Amanda offers yoga therapy, small group instruction, workshops and mentoring for yoga teachers and yoga therapists in the Austin area and online. They dig in deeper on the 10 objectives of play therapy.Developing more positive self concept in kids is important. We all should know that, you are not what you do. So we should never want to say, "kids are something", we would rather want to say, "they are doing something", because we can change what we do. One of Broadway's most exciting new (and really funny) composer/lyricists - author of the Tony nominated BRING IN ON - THE MUSICAL and HANDS ON A HARDBODY
Hands on a Hardbody is the decidedly catchy title of a musical with a particular catch in its plot: A group of people are in a contest to win a new truck. The competition is simple enough. The contestants stand around truck with one hand on it and the last person to let go of the truck is the winner. This new musical is based on a 1997 documentary film about a contest that took place at a Nissan dealership in Longview, Texas. The show features a score by Trey Anastasio of the jam band Phish, and Amanda Green, and a book by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright. And while the premise of the contest — and the show — is simple enough, the catch isn’t as much in the competition as it is in the conventions of the Broadway musical: namely, how much dancing can you do while standing with one hand on a truck? New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood explains how that challenge is handled and some other ways in which the show is unconventional. “Hands on a Hardbody” is now playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theater.
