The world of Vienna at the end of the 19th century was a world of change. New design, new fashion and new philosophy -- and new music. But amidst sweeping change, the Viennese drank champagne and were swept along by the works of the great Johann Strauss II, known appropriately as the "Waltz King". One of his greatest works is the operetta megahit Die Fledermaus which, beneath its frivolity and popping champagne corks, lies a darker vision and foreshadowing of a very different world to come. In this episode, Carl is joined by returning musicologist and professional musician Dr. Christopher Brellochs for a look at Strauss and his most famous work -- how he created it and what he was trying to communicate to audiences. In addition, Carl and Chris take a look at another blockbuster operetta, The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar and discuss how the musical form has evolved into a modern era. Lastly, this episode ends with a look at just how works like Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow have influenced our modern Broadway musical theatre today. Visit the Gilded Gentleman website for more episodes.

It's our season finale, and the end of the pre-code era! To celebrate, Tim Brayton returns to discuss THE MERRY WIDOW. We effuse about the film's infectious energy, the many incredible ‘Lubitsch Touch' moments and gestures, discuss Lubitsch's extremely loose adaptation of the Lehar operetta, the French-language version, Edward Everett Horton's greatest role, the film's relationship with love and death, the more “conservative” nature of the film's resolution, and much more! With that, Season 4 of HOW WOULD LUBITSCH DO IT comes to a close, and with it the pre-code era. Oh how we'll miss you, lax Hays office overseers. Thanks to the guests who lent their time and support to this season: Jennifer Fleeger, Katharine Coldiron, Jonathan Mackris, Will Sloan, Matt Severson, Lea Jacobs, Tanya Goldman, Willa Ross, Krin Gabbard, Molly Rasberry, Jordan Fish, Ray Tintori, Z Behl, Eric Dienstfrey and Tim Brayton. What happens when a young woman begins to suspect her sophisticated Uncle Charlie– who happens to be staying in her family's home for a visit– is the notorious “Merry Widow” killer? That's the question addressed by Hitchcock's 1943 classic “Shadow of a Doubt.” The thriller is reportedly Hitchcock's favorite movie, one that features Teresa Wright as the strong, plucky heroine, and Joseph Cotten in the role of the charming, sociopathic villain. Tragically, however, the serial killer upon whom this movie is loosely based was even darker and his crimes more horrific than the one Hitchcock brought to life. In this episode we delve into the true crime behind “Shadow of a Doubt,” the murderous spree of Earle Leonard Nelson– aka “The Gorilla Man” and “The Dark Strangler”-- who has been described as one of the most prolific and feared serial killers of the early 20th century. *Please note that this episode may not be suitable for all audiences. This week, it's all about very British scandals! Before Harry and Meghan caused a royal rumpus, “The Firm,” was putting out fires across Europe. Two trials become a who's who of naughty nobles in these scandalous tales of the upper crust. First, Marissa introduces us to a murderous courtesan named Marguerite Alibert—with ties to King Edward—who took inspiration from an operetta and became a Merry Widow. Then, Carter opens up the explicit diary of Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll, whose private polaroids became front page news in a classic tale of spousal revenge.
Synopsis On this date in 1905, the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár conducted the first performance of his new operetta, The Merry Widow. Lehar was sure it would be a success, but others did not share his confidence. The show's librettist, lawyer in tow, urged Lehár to cancel the premiere, and the nervous theater manager banned Viennese reporters from dress rehearsals, fearing bad advance press. After a lukewarm debut at Vienna's Theater an der Wien, The Merry Widow moved to a smaller, suburban theater, where it suddenly caught on. Within a year it had become a sensational hit throughout Europe. Lehár's contemporary, Gustav Mahler, was a Merry Widow fan, although he sent his wife, Alma, to buy the music rather than risk the embarrassment of having the director of Vienna's Imperial Opera House seen buying such a shamelessly "pop" score. Ironically, another great fan of Lehár's music was Adolf Hitler. Despite the fact that Lehár's wife and many of his professional associates were Jewish, Lehár's music continued to be performed in Nazi Germany. Lehár was 68 when Austria became part of the German Reich, and continued to conduct in Vienna and Berlin. Lehár's family was spared, but many of his former associates were forced into exile. Others were not so lucky: In 1942, Louis Treumann, who first sang The Merry Widow Waltz at the 1905 premiere in Vienna, died in the "model" concentration camp at Theresienstadt. Music Played in Today's Program Franz Lehár (1870-1948) The Merry Widow excerpts Budapest Philharmonic; Janos Sandor, conductor. Laserlight 15046

It takes a lot to earn a title like the Merry Widow of Windy Nook but for her, this title was not only fitting but maybe tame in comparison to the crimes she actually committed.Continuing on with our season of Black Widows, she not only fits the bill, but due to her crimes she would be the last woman to be sentenced to death in Durham in 1958. This is the case of Black Widow Mary Elizabeth Wilson.
