On this episode of The Commentary Booth, host Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey tumble back into the world of the Toros, the Clovers, and the deeply cursed spirit stick to ask the only question that matters: Does this cheerleading classic still hold up?This iconic cheerleading movie from 2000 starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union has aged both brilliantly and problematically, and our hosts aren't holding back. What starts as a trip down memory lane quickly evolves into a deep dive into the film's lasting legacy, its problematic moments through a modern lens, and why it remains a defining teen movie of the 2000s.In this flashback episode, Jamie and Corrina dissect everything from the film's groundbreaking approach to cultural appropriation and LGBTQ+ representation to its cringeworthy moments that haven't aged well. They explore how this teen comedy inadvertently became a feminist statement piece while still being packed with questionable content like the sexualisation of high schoolers and outdated language.Highlights Breakdown: - Aging & Legacy: Does Bring It On hold up? A discussion on its groundbreaking themes (cultural appropriation, all-female leads) versus its many problematic elements (language, stereotypes, sexualisation). - Cast & Characters: From Kirsten Dunst's committed silliness to Gabrielle Union's star-making turn, and the bizarre phenomenon of 30-year-olds playing high schoolers. - The Problematic Stuff: Unpacking the film's use of homophobic slurs, body shaming, implied assault, and the infamous "bikini car wash." - Cheerleading Fact vs. Fiction: Why the movie's stunts are pure college-level fantasy, the real cost of Cherry Pie rights, and the hidden world of competitive cheer. - Sequels, Broadway, & Reboots: A rapid-fire tour through the Bring It On cinematic universe and its unlikely transition to a Lin-Manuel Miranda musical.Whether you're a die-hard Toros fan, a Clovers loyalist, or just love dissecting the movies of your youth, this episode is a spirited, no-holds-barred celebration and critique of a film that truly brought it.This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram

This week on DtW, it's all spirit fingers and stolen routines with Bring It On! Dan and Raul caught another anniversary film with the 2000 cheerleading competition flick that is turning 25 this year. Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and Gabrielle Union all star in this slightly spoofy sports story centered around a suburban championship cheer squad and their new leader finding out their trophy-winning moves were plagiarized from an inner city team. As a film that seemingly bridges classic film tropes and modern cinema sensibilities, it manages to stay entertaining and relevant a quarter century after release and definitely worth a watch. Send us a textIn this episode of Writers With Wrinkles, hosts Beth McMullen and Lisa Schmid sit down with literary agent Sheyla Knigge of Highline Literary Collective to talk about the art of building strong author-agent relationships. Sheyla shares her journey into publishing, her approach to championing authors, and the key questions every writer should ask before signing with an agent.Guest Bio: Sheyla Knigge is a literary agent at Highline Literary Collective with nearly two years of experience representing authors and selling books. A lifelong reader who entered agenting during the pandemic, she quickly proved her eye for marketable stories—discovering Where the Dark Stems Still by A.B. Poranek, which became a six-week New York Times bestseller. She now represents 25 clients across genres and is known for her transparency, passion for storytelling, and dedication to uplifting diverse voices.Key Discussion Points:Origin story: how Sheyla transitioned from project management to slush-pile reader to full-time agent.Defining strong partnerships: the importance of open communication, trust, and transparency in the agent-author relationship.Red flags in queries: why writing outside one's lived experience without sensitivity can be problematic, and how Sheyla evaluates submissions.Crucial questions for writers: why asking about an agent's support system and mentorship is essential before signing. When to walk away: how gut checks, excitement about revisions, and true alignment matter more than a “big name.”Wish list: Sheyla's dream project—“murderous cheerleaders,” a mashup of Bring It On meets I Know What You Did Last Summer. Conclusion: Sheyla Knigge reminds writers that publishing is about partnership, not desperation. Choosing the right agent means prioritizing communication, shared vision, and mutual growth over prestige. Her advice encourages authors to seek relationships that set their creative souls on fire, because the right story—and the right fit—will always find its way to readers.Mentioned Links:Highline Literary CollectiveSheyla Knigge on Instagram Support the show Visit the WebsiteWriters with Wrinkles Link Tree for socials and more!

Shonica Gooden (Hamilton Broadway's Woman 4) was born and raised in Atlanta, where she focused on what was supposed to be a thriving modern dance career. She had zero interest in musical theatre and didn't see herself as a triple threat. Luckily, her teachers at DanceMakers of Atlanta did see her as a triple threat and strongly encouraged Shonica to audition for Bring It On. This led to callbacks and work sessions with Alex Lacamoire and Andy Blankenbuehler, and it would prove to be the start of a beautiful friendship with The Cabinet.  Shonica had the incredibly unique experience working with Andy Blankenbuehler in the pre-production phase of Hamilton, and she was one of the dancers Andy called to help him visualize what would end up being the choreography in the show. It was a shock to everyone (especially Andy) when Shonica turned down the opportunity to be a swing when Hamilton was transferring to Broadway. As Shonica explains, it was a terrifying decision that ended up being the right move. Plus, Shonica talks about being a mother on Broadway including not feeling guilty about having a child, what needs to change in the industry, refusing to make excuses, and teaching her son that being busy is normal because she's not giving up her career anytime soon.  Shonica on Instagram The Black Artists Dance Collective Mutha Podcast /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps
