Calum Macdonald, Kirsty Buchanan and Jo Tanner, assess the implications of President Trump's impending tariffs on the UK economy and the global market. They discuss the political strategies surrounding these tariffs, the potential impact on trade relations, and the broader economic consequences. The conversation also transitions to the assisted dying legislation currently progressing through Parliament, highlighting the political dynamics at play.We also consider, at length, the Assisted Dying Bill. We look at complexities of the assisted dying legislation currently under review in the UK Parliament. Nikki Da Costa, Former Director of legislative affairs at Number 10, discusses the significant changes made to the bill during the committee stage, particularly the removal of key safeguards intended to protect vulnerable populations. The discussion also highlights the challenges surrounding the implementation of the bill, including the readiness of the NHS and the ethical implications of the proposed legislation. As the bill moves forward, the conversation emphasises the importance of addressing concerns about the potential impact on vulnerable individuals and the responsibilities of MPs in the legislative process.Kit Malthouse, a Conservative MP, backs the assisted dying legislation. They discuss the various amendments made to the bill, the safeguards put in place, and the ongoing debate surrounding the right to choose. Malthouse addresses concerns about the safety of the bill, the role of the NHS versus private provision, and reflects on the personal impact of the legislative process. Richard starts off this week's show with a Malthouse Theatre 2025 season overview with Artistic Director Matt Lutton. Gunai/Kurnai woman and curator Amanda Haskard talks ACMI's major exhibition The Future and Other Fictions. And three interviews about Melbourne Fringe: performer and choreographer Alix Kuijpers tells Richard about Grim Grinning Ghosts, Mitch Jones (Oozing Future) discusses new alt-circus/theatre performance Apocrypha, and Oli Mathiesen talks about about the Aotearoa production The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave.
Broadcaster Kelli Underwood and coaching games record holder Mick Malthouse have a heated Friday night debate around the future of the game as concerns around concussion continue to threaten the "fabric of the game" according to Malthouse.
Hillary Barile isn't sure what she'd call herself first: a farmer or a maltster. In reality, she's both, working as a fifth generation farmer at Rabbit Hill Farms & Malthouse in Shiloh, New Jersey. There, she and members of her family produce barley and other crops, as well as run a small-scale malthouse that supplies ingredients for breweries and distilleries. And, as president of the Craft Maltsters Guild Board of Directors, she works to educate and grow the craft malt community across North America and beyond. So why, and how, did she make the jump from farming pottoes to investing in the agriculture and future of craft malt? It started with homebrewing, of course, with aspirations of opening a brewery to diversify and solidify her farm's finances. But, as she explains in this episode, the business plan never got that far. As for what's next, she says the breweries prioritizing local craft malt can tell unique stories that still reach the hearts of drinkers, giving them a small, but sufficient shield against difficult economic forces. We also discuss the many definitions of the word “sustainable,” and the efforts she's making to ensure generations to come will still have the opportunity to nurture the land her family has cultivated.
Kate McCarthy, former AFLW player and current Triple M Footy commentator is our guest friend today, and Swanny wants to know what the hell he has to do to get a gig with Triple M as he reckons everyone except him has one.He explains Swan FC to Kate. She is suitably impressed (or is she?) and suggests a slogan - Swan FC, Any Where, Any Time, Any Price. Kate explains why she came to Melbourne and how she got into footy commentary. Can you believe in the media centre at Marvel, there are still no female bathrooms? Kate's sick of dealing with the male bathrooms after BT, JB, et al have taken a dump and she's decided to take over one bathroom with a homemade sign.Kate brings up Swanny's hatred of sand. And he then adds wind to the list. We talk AFLW. Kate reckons the AFL got it wrong and expanded too quickly. Ralphy disagrees. We talk about players not going back with the flight of the ball, Swanny tells a story about a pre-season match with the Saints where he didn't and copped a gob full from Brendan Goddard. Did Swanny care? What do you think...Swanny and Kate agree that they were not good with pre-season training, and Swanny reveals his theory on why he came back from the break as a player in less than ideal condition. Which leads to talking 'bakes', and Swanny reckons Malthouse was the king of the bake, and says that there is no way he (Malthouse) could coach today, not with his style. Dane wonders why he got yelled at by Malthouse, but he never saw Pendles cop a spray. And he makes the comment that great offensive players can't be great defensive players, saying it is impossible. And he sneaks in a shameless plug for his new cooking show on 7mate, starts this Saturday arvo at 1.30pm. EPISODE SUMMARY This week we ask: What does the process of Brexit tell us about the role of the UK's parliament and whether it needs reform? EPISODE NOTES The last seven years in British politics have been tempestuous. The turmoil has had multiple causes: Covid, Putin's attack on Ukraine, and Trussonomics among them. But the politics of much of the period has been dominated by Brexit: by a referendum on an ever so simple question, followed by years of wrangling over what the question meant and how the answer that voters gave to it should be interpreted and implemented. Much of that contest took place in parliament. Meaningful voters, indicative votes, the Brady amendment, the Malthouse compromise, the Cooper–Letwin Bill and the legality or otherwise of prorogation – all became the stuff of prime-time television. So what should we make of that period? And what can we learn from it – about how parliament and our constitution work, and about how they should work? Well a new book recently published by Oxford University Press explores all these questions and many more. It's called The Parliamentary Battle over Brexit. And its authors join me now. They are Meg Russell (Director of the UCL Constitution Unit and Professor of British and Comparative Politics in the UCL Department of Political Science) and Lisa James (Research Fellow at the Constitution Unit). You've heard about people ‘reinventing themselves' but did you ever wonder how it was actually done?Libbi Gorr is a multi-award winning radio and tv broadcaster who as the satirical character Elle McFeast became the first woman in Australia to helm her own national night-time variety show Elle McFeast Live. When a clearly drunk notorious hitman Chopper Read staggered on stage to be interviewed, and proceeded to laugh while joking about killing a man by putting him in a cement mixer - fair to say the shit hit the fan.The absolute rocket that was Elle McFeast was riding into the heights of career success took a very unexpected turn. Her show which had been commissioned for 32 episodes ran only 16, and well before social media cancel culture was invented, the manufactured media outrage around the moment essentially ended Elle McFeast - sending Libbi to seek cover, where she put things back together to reemerge anew.It was an enormously high-profile moment, one which she talks about with her show Bold Conversations, happening at The Malthouse theatre in Melbourne this Thursday - and we touch on as well during our chat on this episode.Tickets for live shows are here:SydneyMelbourneStay up to date on more upcoming shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? GUEST OVERVIEW: Dr. Stephen Malthouse has been practising medicine in BC for 43 years in rural, urban, emergency room, palliative care, and family practice settings. He was also involved in paediatric research while living in Nepal for 2 years. Dr. Malthouse founded the Canadian Integrative Medicine Association and is the current president of the Canada Health Alliance, a national network of healthcare professionals whose aim is to promote therapies that are based on science, not politics or financial gain.
We had SO MUCH FUN with this guest and we think you will too. Korean-Australian adoptee Ra Chapman is a writer, actor and dramaturg. She has strong ties with the adoption community and works closely with Asian-Australian and diverse artists. Ra is one of those people who has been on our list of guests to invite for a long time, but we were just waiting for the right moment—and here it is! Ra's debut play, K-BOX, which won the 2021 Patrick White Playwright Award, will premiere at the Malthouse Theatre next month (and we are so freakin' proud of her!). K-BOX is a surreal comedy with an Australian Korean adoptee main character named Lucy. Lucy has just quit her job, dumped her boyfriend, and turned up on her adoptive parents' doorstep needing somewhere to crash. She's depressed, she's a mess, and she's stumbled across an old cardboard box that was once full of childhood memories but is now completely empty. Lucy and her parents haven't always seen eye to eye on everything, but when a K-Pop star mysteriously wanders into their lives and starts asking destabilising questions about her Korean roots, new fault lines are exposed in the family unit that become impossible to hide. In this episode Ra talks about the inspiration for K-BOX, as well as her transition from acting to writing. Then Ra shares her experience as an Asian Australian actor and writer, and her thoughts on diversity and representation in the Australian arts scene. Plus, we make our acting debut reading a short excerpt from K-BOX, we learn some industry lingo, such as “meat puppet”, and much more. K-BOX opens at the Malthouse Theatre, in Melbourne, Australia on 2nd September 2022. Book tickets here! https://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/tickets/malthouse-theatre/k-box/
We'll start the morning in a merry way, meeting the folks from the Modern Times Theater. Next, we'll chat with a Vermonter who “qualified” for golf's U.S. Open recently...as part of the grounds crew. After that, we'll catch up with Grammy-winning singer Dobet Gnahoré [do BAY geh NOR ay] of the Ivory Coast, who will performing tonight in Middlesex. And we finish by learning what the owners of Vermont Malthouse are up to and how they help the Vermont brewing and distilling industry.

It's a beautiful day in the neighbourhood. After a coffee in the morning, Tim and Guy reunite for a catch up in the friendzone ON THE BOOKS. Hungover movies, hungover television and hangovers in general, including a truly repulsive stroll down memory lane with a twenty-year-old Flash are the menu. Catholic mothers-in-law are upset by our boner content while four year old children are singing our theme song. But the big ticket item: Guy is filming a comedy special for Paramount+!If you live in Melbourne, you are required to attend at The Malthouse on Monday June 20! Sonny Walters and Alex Pearce will proudly represent the collective this Sunday against Collingwood on Sir Doug Nicholls round. Time to Restump Podcast preview the clash. We need after a response to last week. Collingwood won't be a pushover but if we get back to playing our brand, it should hold us in good stead. If we're any chance of a top 4 finish, we have to bank 4 points here. You need about 15 wins a season to make the top 4. We've got 13 games left meaning we need to win 8 of them. We've got Melbourne twice, Brisbane & Carlton to come, so 4 of those 13 games are against current top 3 sides. A further 3 are against current top 8 sides…. which means 7 of our remaining 13 games are against top 8 sides. It's a tough run home which makes Sunday's game vital. We look at the changes and somewhat scratch our heads in bewilderment over Brandon Walker's omission. The selection panel obviously knows more than us and sees things we may not. Good to have Sonny, Switta & Tabs back though. You never want to hear “put off contract talks” but Griff Logue has done just that. Sounds more agent inspired but we'll inevitably have to have the conversation. We momentarily deal in hypotheticals about what could unfold.Fyfey has Rd12 in his sights and despite the Malthouse madness, he'll be a welcome return. Connor Blakely looks done and dusted in the purple so we're looking to support his new venture, Blakely's Backyards. James Clement cops a “what the hell, Jimmy!” He passed up the invitation to hop on the Restump for a chat…. and, to be fair, who could blame him… but he then accepted the invite onto the Collingwood fan pod, Pie Hard. We don't want to exaggerate but is treasonous too strong a term? And, no you don't escape it, we bring it home with another episode of the Neighbourhood Watch segment. So, if you've gorged yourself all your listening content, enjoyed a second course of filling noise and you still haven't had sufficient…. click play for this purple listening snack to tide you over.
A day later we can see clearly now the rain has gone. Time to Restump Podcast Freo's rain drops keep falling on my head loss to the Gold Coast Suns. How were we not prepared for the conditions? We're from a port, we're Dockers, Dockers work on a wharf! How could water even remotely seem foreign to them? Did they think we all ironically came down in the last shower? Now the angst is out of the way we can look at it in a more measured manner…. yeah measured manner with a rain gauge! The conditions overwhelmingly were the talking point but they shouldn't be judged as the reason for the performance. It was our bewildering inability to adapt and be prepared for the conditions…. oh and it was also Gold Coast themselves, they brought the heat we didn't.Kicking a winning score was always going to be difficult without a Taberner, Walters and Switkowski. When the Suns' mids got on top and then their forward pressure came… we got hung out to, obviously metaphorically, dry. Some positives on a dark day, Griffin Logue's form continued as he broke the all time Freo record for intercepts with 17. Neil Erasmus showed us signs he'll be a career mid for the next dozen years and, while part of a beaten midfield, Will Brodie carried on his hard ball getting ways with a game high 17 contested of his 27 possessions.Anyone who indulges in the ‘old man Malthouse trade Fyfe' talk got a reality check. We had no one to stop the rot… A big Fyfey would have been handy. Darcy uncharacteristically lowered his colours and, despite his best one-handed mark attempts, Lobb had no influence which left all the points with Gold Coast's Jarrod Witts. But to be fair, they weren't on their own. We had few winners out there Sunday. Maybe the loss just resets the expectations and brings them back into line with reality. Nothing goes up in a straight line and teams will always throw in an uncharacteristic inexplicable one. Anomalies aren't trend changers, we're still on the up.Maybe, its simply the loss we had to have. So, join us for a reviewing paddle through Sunday's waterlogged game as we mop up the spillage and refill the expectation glass to half full.
Safe to say North's rebuild could do with a Jim's Handyman. Time to Restump Podcast Friday night's result in which Freo hopped over the Kangas. Six wins on the bounce… who is this purple outfit? As Fremantle fans we know too well what North supporters are going through so there will be no showboating from us. However, it was pleasing to put away a side in the manner we should have, as it is something we have rarely been able to do. It was a methodical, disciplined and systematic performance from a club that is growing in professionalism. Starting with the Busseltonian, Jye “Nev” Amiss. Sometimes footy delivers moments you hope for but can't realistically expect. If you were writing a script pre-match you would have been pretty proud of your work. His first kick first goal was one special moment. But above and beyond the moment, and more importantly, what a pick 8 product we have got for the next 10 to 15 years! He moved well, didn't seem overawed, he looked comfortable and settled and while he may make way for Tabs and Lobb, he's not far away from returning if he does. That's enough Jye love… let's get to Mr Fix It. The man who wears many hats and performs a multitude of roles often even within games! Jimmy Aish put in a ripping game but not one that could be classed as rare. 30 touches and 5 clearances, he was a notable standout and another who has seen his performance rise substantially this year. On Friday night he owned the fastest hands in the west. But you cant talk cracking games without mentioning future captain Andy Brayshaw. We can get a bit unintentionally complacent with Andy's work given his regularity but its genuinely difficult to not have him up in the calibre of the league's best. Leading by example and intent, 34 touches, 10 clearance and 7 marks… its ridiculous he's 23 years of age! Oh to hell with this…. Lets stop beating around the bush! It was a deadest procession Friday night. If North were any slower to move early on they'd have been statues and you could go as far as to realistically suggest North may have put up a more competitive first quarter had David Noble selected actual Kangaroos! But hey let's keep a lid on it, stay reserved and humble, don't rock any boats and allow this purple juggernaut to roll on.We talk everything Friday night, we go over Malthouse's moronic remark, as usual we wander into things that don't concern us and bring it home with our first Butcher of the Week winner! So, ride the Mexican wave and join us for more emotionally conflicting, many failed attempts at measured purple praise masquerading as analysis.
