Email us! Allen Hall: With modern wind turbines growing larger and main shaft bearings failing prematurely. The industry needs innovative solutions rather than relying on yesterday's technology. This week we speak with Loren Walton, manager of corporate accounts at NSK. NSK has developed super tough bearing technology, a special heat treated steel that creates a significantly harder surface without coatings delivering long lifespans and eliminating catastrophic failures in today's larger wind turbines. Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining Light on Wind. Energy's brightest innovators. This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Loren, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. Appreciate your time today. Loren, we brought you in the program because you're an expert in bearings. You're with NSK, A lot of knowledge, a lot of history there. First, I want to ask a real simple question because we've run into operators all across the United States and the world. Generally speaking, we just got back from Australia who are having problems with main shaft bearings. And maybe the first thing to do here is to describe what some of the problems are that operators are facing with the traditional main shaft bearings. Yeah. So Loren Walton: traditionally what we were saying was a whole lot of, I guess I'll say combined loading, right? So it's a, radio load that is, up and down and some axial thrust that's coming in from the wind shear, right? So combining the weight of the main shaft, which is you're taking up from that radio load with that wind shear. So then you end up having some combined loading where. The downed wind row is seeing a little bit more of load share than the upwind row. That's getting through the lubricant regime, which is then creating some micro welding and shearing, any amount of metal, any steel. When it's created, it's going to have some disparities. I use my fingers as the disparities, right? So your roller, your raceway, or your raceway, your roller. There's gonna be some welding and shearing that happens when that is under high pressure. And so your lubricant is supposed to create a little bit of a gap between those. When you don't have that gap you end up with the welding and shearing, you end up with what we call peeling damage, and then that peeling basically goes over and over again, and you start having high levels of debris. Inside of the system. And then once that debris starts going all bets are off, right? 'cause you can't really even model debris very linearly. It just goes into additional sping and then you end up, if you keep letting it run, you end up with a through crack inside of one of your components, which is typically your inner ring. 'cause it's press fit on the shaft. Joel Saxum: And a important concept here as well is because main bearings are basically a sealed lubricant system. There isn't filters on these, right? So like when you start to get debris moving around in the system, it stays there. It just, it's not oh, let's go change oil on this thing. And we remove the debris, we put a new filter on it, we're good to go. It's not, it's just, it's in that system now. If it,

When I was a skateboarding teenager, we didn't have internet or cell phones to order things. We had magazines and one magazine that I subscribed to was a skateboarding magazine called “Thrasher Magazine.” In Thrasher, there were ads selling skateboards and at the top of the add it would say, “Buy a complete for only $99!” which meant you could buy everything you need to skate from the ad: the deck, grip tape, trucks, riser pads, bearings, and wheels. When that thing came in the mail, you were ready to skate! Paul says, “When we have Jesus, we are complete.” We are ready! We have everything we need! We do not lack anything because we belong to Christ! Do you have everything you need?!?!

I'm your host, Alan Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxon. Today, we're joined by Jonathan Zalar, Managing Partner at Independent Wind Turbine Generator Consulting, or IWTG. With over a decade of experience at GE Renewable Energy, including roles in root cause analysis and systems engineering, Jonathan brings a deep industry knowledge to his consulting work. We'll discuss recent events that we have seen in the field. Explore how his expertise is helping wind turbine owners optimize their assets and tackle some industry challenges. Jonathan, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. So you've been around looking at blades and turbines for the last several months. Thanks. Thanks. And we've been in contact a little bit about what you've been seeing. Maybe just give us a brief description of what's happened this summer in terms of blades and turbines. A lot of Jonathan Zalar: customers are starting to realize that there's some, some bigger issues that are coming to a head. And the need to like, look more is becoming more apparent. So, just because you have an external crack and you're about to go repair, it doesn't mean you shouldn't. Maybe take a look inside, especially if it's easy to get to. I have a few customers that are finding, internal cracks and needs to monitor some internal. Issues more and more. So, relying just on drones is maybe not the best thing anymore. Allen Hall: Yeah. Let, let's, let's talk about that because we're seeing a lot of internal cracks. It doesn't, the manufacturer doesn't seem to be important here. It seems to be universal. the crack situation. Operators don't really have tools to go do that themselves besides, and they've been using drone inspections forever. So they, are they interpreting drone inspections external once it looks good on the outside is probably good on the inside. And is that the right Jonathan Zalar: move? In most cases, it probably is, but depending on the type of crack you have and potentially like some history on the particular blades, you might want to start taking a look inside. And I think More, I think as I don't know, the industry keeps going with the blade repairs, they're going to start finding that, some of these might have started on the inside versus the outside. I mean, historically, most of the stuff that's starting on the outside, I mean, you got a lot of, the coding coming off the small stuff that, cat ones that you can steal with later, but as some, so you can cat fours and fives. They started somewhere and if you're not confident it was the outside, spend the extra money, look on the inside. Joel Saxum: So, someone like yourself who's got experience like you, you have experience from GEs, right? So you've been around the block for most all the, the last ten plus years of GE turbines. Kogel Bearings was established in 2013 in a 5x10 foot storage unit in Ard Kessels' adopted hometown of El Paso, TX. The goals were clear from the beginning: Make the high end bearings that fit a premium bike. Develop specific seals for road and off road use, since they have different requirements. Design a line of bottom brackets that will eliminate the use of adapters. As a bike shop owner in Belgium, Ard had one big frustration: sending expensive bicycles out with the stock bearings that came with the frames or complete bikes. We all understand that ball bearings are at the bottom of every spec sheet when product managers assemble bikes for the catalog and new model year, so it's almost a given that they are the cheapest available. These Low-quality steel products tend to not gel well with the Belgian climate, where riding on wet roads is a given. Following the motto "Just because it fits, doesn't make it right" has sent Kogel on a mission to develop a native solution for (almost) every combination of crank and frame. Today, we are still fighting that battle. It seems that frame manufacturers have not grown tired of reinventing a hole in a frame.

Sam Johnson Wild Bearings, LLC is an extension of my passion for the outdoors and the habit of living “slightly” on the edge with my safety clicked off. My biggest passion is remote fly fishing, as well as writing about the waters of the Appalachians, Rockies and Sierras. My rod of choice is bamboo, so another passion is making, collecting, selling and fishing them. Also worth mentioning is my role as Executive Producer and Co-host of Wild Bearings Outdoors, a TV show that takes viewers to exotic fly-fishing destinations and showcases their history, lore and angling opportunities. The show premiered in 2023 and airs on The Country Network. One other bad habit of mime is playing the bagpipes, and as a member of John Mohr Mackintosh Pipes & Drums in Atlanta, I spend a lot of time performing around the country. When not chasing things in the wild, or making outdoor films, I'm a partner in a boutique transaction advisory practice that helps late stage emerging growth, and lower mid-market companies, prepare for, and execute buy / sell transactions. I also sit on several corporate and non-profit boards. But in the end, when it's all said and done, I just want to be known as a red-blooded, flag waving American, performer, traveler, kilted fly fisherman, talker, loyal friend, gentleman, do-gooder, mountain man, Christian and an occasional prevaricator. I've also been described using slightly stronger adjectives, but fortunately they're in a slight minority! Chris Sloan Growing up in a very small town in Texas was cool, especially since we lived just a few miles from Lake Lewisville. Total population 3,000 meant small town, small community, and great outdoor activities abound. I grew up bass fishing not only on Lake Lewisville, but my uncle had property in east Texas that had a 23-acre private lake where the bass were huge, the crappie fat, and the brim aggressive. I met my better half in that small town and 40 years later we are still Texas strong. Not long after college I got into golf and enjoyed playing for many years. But about 2014 a bug (pun intended) jumped up and hooked me with an even greater sport… fly fishing! I was always curious about the sport and it wasn't until I met Sam, who is a true fly fishing pioneer, that the dream of learning how to fly fish became a reality. I truly enjoy the nostalgia of the sport and especially the history of fly tying and bamboo rods. Wild Bearings is a dream come true that allows me to hopefully leave a little something behind to the sport while passing on what I've learned to the newer generations of future historians that will write their own stories someday. I'm your host, Allen Hall, and I'm here with my co host, Joel Saxum. If you were an owner, operator, or technician in wind, you have come across pitch bearing problems. And those pitch bearing problems can get really hard to detect early. But once you see them, they're expensive to repair. So Joel and I thought it was time to bring on an expert. In bearings to the podcast. So our guest today is Cory Mittleider of Malloy Wind. And Cory has an extensive background in wind bearings. Now, Malloy, if you're not familiar, is based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which is in the middle of the United States. And Malloy Wind specializes in providing solutions for wind turbine. applications. So they're a total wind focus organization. They offer a variety of services, including upgrading gearbox bearings, blade bearings, main shaft bearings, pitch motor renewals, and generator bearings. Cory, welcome to the program. Cory Mittleider: Hey guys, thanks for having me. Allen Hall: So there's so many questions about pitch bearings and just having been down in San Diego at the ACP OMNS one of the complaints is, Oh, I got a huge bearing replacement program going on this summer. And my first thought was of you were thinking, wow, you guys must be really busy because Bearings are probably after lightning, it's lightning and then bearings were one and two of the problems for wind turbines at the moment. Cory Mittleider: Yeah, it's been it's been a busy couple of years. There's certainly standout platforms that are having their own platform specific failure modes that we're discovering as we work with operators. Joel Saxum: Yeah we talked a little bit off air about some of that thing. Okay, so we're in lightning space. We know if someone calls and says, I have this turbine with these blades, you go, Ooh, you got problems. So I know that it's the same thing in the Bering world, generators, like you know the ones that are going to happen. So when you guys initially talk with someone, What are some of the points that you asked them right away? Okay. They've called, what are we looking at? Cory Mittleider: Sure. Sure. So to your point, it's a lot of platform specific. We know platform X has this history of problems. Platform Y has a different set of history and platform Z is a pretty stable, pretty robust platform, for example. So we start to, to investigate, is it one of those platforms that we already know has some issues that we either maybe have something developed for, or are currently working on. We talk about how soon are they experiencing their first failures or how are they detecting them? And most importantly, I think is how long do they plan to run the site? Are they two thirds of the way through the life of the site? Then, we probably propose a different solution to them than we do to some of the worst case scenarios where they're having failures in the three year ...

Matt Harvey is the co-founder of Enduro Bearings, a company dedicated to producing premium, high quality bearings for the bicycle industry. He's been working in bike shops starting as a teenager and later for industry brands like Gary Fisher and Bianchi. What was your 'aha' moment for forming Enduro Bearings? What makes bicycle bearings different from bearings used for other purposes? What are the challenges involved in designing high performance bicycle bearings? Which parts of a mountain bike will benefit the most from high quality bearings? How do you know when your bearings are worn out, or need maintenance? Are bearings generally serviceable, or are home mechanics better off replacing them? What kind of grease should you use for bearings? What's the advantage of ceramic bearing balls? Where are most bearings products produced? Why do you think Pressfit bottom brackets have such a bad reputation? Aside from bottom brackets, it seems like the bearings in pedals tend to give riders problems over time. Why is that? What's next for Enduro Bearings? Is there still potential for innovation and improvement in bicycle bearings? This week, John and Tyler begrudgingly talk about blink-182 yet again doing more teasing toward their upcoming single and album. They also discuss one band dropping off their very own co-headlining tour just 1 week before the tour is supposed to kick off citing other opportunities causing conflicts. All of this leaves just one headliner and their fans who have purchased tickets upset and out of luck. But are they in the wrong here? Also in this episode, Spotify may have a problem when it comes to Swedish gangs laundering money through the platform. And speaking of Spotify, non-Premium subscribers may be saying goodbye to the music streaming service's Lyrics feature.Support the showAs always, thanks for listening! If you're interested in supporting our show, you can do so here.
