Bible Reading: Psalm 27:1"You'll never capture me!" Ava yelled to her friend Jack. They were in Ava's backyard pretending to be medieval knights."On my noble steed, you'll never outlast me!" cried a galloping Jack.As Jack caught up to Ava, they both drew foam swords and shields. "On my honor as a knight, you'll never get your hands on the king's treasure!" Ava stood with her hands square on her hips, proudly showing off her knight's tunic over her pink leggings. The door to Ava's house opened. "Ava, it's time to come in!" Mom called.Ava lowered her sword and shield. "This was fun!" she said."Yeah! Let's meet here again tomorrow to play some more!" Jack said, shivering. "We don't have much time before it'll be too cold to play outside." When Ava entered her house, the warm smells of oregano and garlic bread greeted her. She had forgotten Dad said it was spaghetti night! Ava found her mom sorting through a box of candles. "What are you doing?" Ava asked."Putting a candle in each window of our home," said Mom. "Candles are often used during Advent to help prepare our hearts for Christmas. I thought it would be a good tradition to start.""To prepare for the presents we're gonna get?" Ava asked with a grin."No, goofball, to prepare for the gift of Jesus!" Dad said, giving Ava a silly eye-roll from where he stood stirring the tomato sauce. "Let me put it another way. I know you love history, so I'll tell you how people think the custom of candles in windows at Christmastime may have started. In the Middle Ages, the light of a single, large candle was used to represent the Star of Bethlehem, which is what led the wise men to seek and find Jesus. Shining out from a window at the coldest time of year, it reminded people to seek the King who came to earth as a baby so we could have His warmth and light in our lives.""And that's not something we remember only at Christmas," Mom said, holding out a candle for Ava to put in the window. "Jesus became human and sacrificed Himself so we could be saved. That's something to celebrate all year long." Lauren N. SimmonsHow About You?How does your family prepare for Christmas? Do you put up a tree? String lights up outside? Those are great things to do, but you can also prepare by thanking Jesus for the sacrifice He made when He came to earth as a baby so He could one day die for our sins. When the world was dark and cold, He came and shined His light on us. How can you share His warmth with others this Christmas--and every other time of year?Today's Key Verse:Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (NKJV) (John 8:12)Today's Key Thought:Jesus is the light of the world

Overtoun looms over the town, watching, waiting: the locals fearful of the strange building and the secrets it keeps. When Ava starts to ask questions, the warm welcome she first receives turns to a cold shoulder. And before she knows it, Ava is caught in the house's grasp too. After she discovers the history of a sick young girl who lived there, she starts to understand the sadness that shrouds it. But when she finds an ominous old message etched into a windowsill, she is forced to wonder—what horrors is the house protecting? And what will it cost her to find out? With her own first child on the way, Ava knows she should stay away. But even as her life starts to unravel, and she receives chilling threats, the house and the bridge keep pulling her back… This shows BEER TOKEN BOOK PROMOTION sponsor is Geoff Major @GradusPrimus and his book DEADLINE! Intro Hi and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, librarians, parents, and anyone who loves middle grade books! And what I love is to help you connect kids between 8-12 with fantastic reads and share inspiring conversations with the authors and educators who make that magic happen. I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a mom of two, a teacher of twenty-two (as of the last classlist update), and a little over two days away from the first day of school. This is episode #59 and today I’m sharing a conversation with Barbara Dee - author of Everything I Know About You along with many other fabulous middle grade reads! A quick update on our Middle Grade at Heart Book Club schedule. This month’s pick is The House That Lou Built. And in October we are reading The Three Rules of Everyday Magic and The Hotel Between by Sean Easley is our November pick. And remember to set yourself a reminder for Monday nights at 9pm EST so you don’t miss the #MGBookChat Twitter chat! Our upcoming topics are Ending Gendered Labels, Books That Battle Mental Health Stigmas, and Teachers as Readers. And I would love to have you join the conversation and share your thoughts about those topics. Barbara - Interview Outline Our special guest this week is the amazing Barbara Dee - author of so many well-loved middle grade books like Halfway Normal and Star Crossed and Truth or Dare - and lots more. We discuss Hamilton, body issues among young girls, her own experiences with an eating disorder, her secrets to capturing dialogue in her writing, the incredible book that she’s working on next, and of course her latest novel - Everything I Know About You ! Take a listen… Everything I Know About You Your latest middle grade novel , Everything I Know About You, was just released this past summer. For our listeners who have not yet read the novel, can you tell us a bit about it? Would you mind reading a favorite passage? One of the things I loved about this novel was that it shed some light on the body issues that so many teens and tweens grapple with. When Ava and her friends have that conversations about “thigh gaps” and being “pre-fat”, I kept think about how many kids feel that pressure over their body…. Why did you want to explore those issues in this novel? This story centers around an overnight field trip to Washington D.C. Did you travel there to do research? Did you see Hamilton?! So how naughty ARE your cats? **BONUS SPOILER SECTION: Paula and I discuss the ending of the novel, and if you’d like to hear that conversation, I moved that part of the recording to after the end credits of today’s episode at the 43:30 mark. Your Writing Life Everything I Know About You is your 9th published novel. How has your writing process changed from those first books to now? If you can talk about it….. what are you working on now? You’ve mentioned before that one of the ways you get ideas is by eavesdropping. Where are some good places for aspiring writers to eavesdrop? And how do you keep from getting caught? Your Reading Life One of the goals of this podcast is to help educators and librarians and parents inspire kids to read more and connect them with amazing books. Did you have a special teacher or librarian who helped foster your reading life as a child? And if so, what did they do that made such a difference? What have you been reading lately? Gideon! Plot a course to Vancouver 2213. I have a sneaking suspicion things may not be as they seem… Wait, what do you mean Amaya went to the M’Changa Province 1992? Doesn’t she know that’s exactly what Mallus wants??? Synopsis After her battle with the Death totem and recent break-up with Ava, Sara is ready to take a break. Fortunately, Gary turns up before she can leave and announces that Ava has not been to work in a few days, which is basically unheard of. So, naturally, Sara and Ray team-up with Gary to find her. In her absence, she leaves Amaya in charge of the Waverider. Nate and Wally discover that Mari, who has lost her powers now that Amaya has lost her totem, has been injured in a fire. Amaya immediately expresses an interest in checking on her granddaughter, but Nate convinces her that he and Wally can handle it. Unfortunately, when they arrive in Detroit 2018, Kuasa is not far behind them. They confront her and she reveals she is there to protect Mari, not hurt her. Kuasa reveals that she would much rather her sister have the totem than Nora Darhk. They come-up with a plan to help both of them: Kuasa will use Nate as bait to trick the Darhks into returning Amaya’s totem. The plan works! Sort of… Kuasa gets the totem and returns it to Amaya, but she leaves Nate to face the Darhks alone. Nate lucks out though. Damien seems to have lost his mojo now that Nora’s face has Mallus written all over it. They bond and pretend Nate is being tortured until Nora shows up out of nowhere and catches them in the act. She flings Damien aside knocking him unconscious and Wally speeds into the Vixen cave with Amaya. Mallus is too strong and quickly overpowers the both of them. He steals Wally’s speed, using it against him, and prevents Amaya from properly channeling Spirit. Kuasa enters Vixen’s hideout to protect her grandmother. She redeems herself, explaining to Nora that family is more important than power, and Nora rips the water totem from her chest, killing her. Meanwhile, Gary, Sara and Ray are snooping through Ava’s office to find out where she might be. They find a card from her parents in Fresno and decide to investigate. Are Ava’s parents to good to be true? Sara immediately picks-up on the Stepford vibe and knows they are too good to be true. She presses with questions she already knows the answers to, forcing them to reveal the truth: they are hired actors. Stymied, they return to the Time Bureau and run into… Ava! Who claims she has been with her parents, which they know is a complete lie, since they were just there. Sara swipes Ava’s time courier to figure out just where she has been. Everything is by the book, but they notice her first mission, Vancouver 2213, is off limits and no one can travel there except for the Mothership. So naturally, they commandeer the Mothership to investigate. None of them expect what they find though as they are confronted with hundreds of AVAs, clones, who have been created from the best genes in all of humanity. Their suspicions were correct: their Ava is an anachronism and time displaced 200 years in the past with no memory of 2213. Ava follows the Mothership and immediately faints when she is confronted with herself. When Ava comes to, she has forgotten what she saw, but not for long. She reveals she was with her ex, and just when she thinks everyone hates her, she learns they are really being confronted with an army of AVAs. Sara convinces Ava to pretend to be one of the clones so they can all escape with their lives. Unfortunately, an AVA they tied up has resurfaced and explains to the others our Ava needs to be reprocessed. In typical Legends fashion, a fight ensues and the Legends plus Ava (Gary didn’t really do much) take out the clones. They all return to the Waverider for a much needed drink. Meanwhile, Zari has been attempting to train Mick how to use his totem. She ends up spinning him through the air after he calls her a bee-otch (a girl can only take so much on an empty stomach, negative thoughts or not) and only stops after Kuasa dies. Her totem signals the others, who feel her death through their totems. Mick wakes-up and shares dinner with Zari after sunset. In the closing scene, Amaya, shaken by her granddaughter's death, makes the decision to go to 1992 and save her dwindling family.
