1. Immigration Enforcement 480,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the first nine months of Trump’s administration. 70% of those arrested had criminal convictions or pending charges. Specific cases of individuals with serious criminal histories (e.g., murder, sexual assault, DUI) who were deported or incarcerated. 2. Sanctuary Cities & Political Opposition Sanctuary cities and the “radical left” are protecting illegal immigrants. Frames Democrats as obstructing law enforcement and enabling crime. 3. Law and Order Narrative Trump’s efforts to make cities safer, including Memphis, Portland, Washington D.C., and Chicago. The deployment of the National Guard and a favorable ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, allow Trump to send troops to Portland. 4. Violence Against Law Enforcement “1000% increase” in violence against police due to anti-cop rhetoric. DC's Decline and the Search for a New Imperial Capital. Gaius and Germanicus debate where the new capital of the American Empire should be located, noting that Washington, D.C., is losing its usefulness. This parallels the Roman abandonment of Rome when it became indefensible and the imperial economy shifted east, leading Constantine to establish Constantinople. DC is troubled by a bypassed population and a shrinking federal workforce, partly due to the consolidation of AI data centers in Virginia. A shift in the capital would symbolize a dramatic transformation of American identity. Germanicus suggests Miami as a potential new capital because it already serves as the entrepôt for Latin America, fitting a potential "America First" hemispheric identity. This focus aligns with the large Hispanic influx and the migration of Northerners into strong Southern states like Florida and Texas. Just as DC was originally situated midway between the North and South colonies, the new capital must be centered where North and South meet to cement a new identity. “Some time ago, I realized that there was such a thing for me as experiencing my patients as being friends, but they were psychoanalytic friends. It was a psychoanalytic friendship that was quite unique and unlike any other friendship. I think that's what people are talking about when they write about psychoanalytic love. It's not love like any other kind of relationship, because the psychoanalytic relationship is so unique. And I feel the same way about psychoanalytic parenting. It's like it's close to mentoring, but it's different because the structure of the relationship is different than from a mentor or an esteemed and loved teacher. It really is helping somebody with the whole process of development and helping them grow, mature, and become more comfortable with themselves and to know themselves better. That seems to me the essence of parenting, and I don't think we should feel defensive about thinking about it that way. That doesn't seem to me that it's my counter-transference in needing to be a good mother, a good father, a good parent to my patients.”  Episode Description: We discuss the challenge of transmitting the experiential knowledge of the dynamic therapies to new generations. David's book on therapeutic aphorisms demonstrates a number of key elements of this unique relationship - symbolic meanings in symptoms, 'psychotherapeutic parenting', the simultaneous use of medications and working with the unlikable patient to name but a few of the topics he brings forward. He describes the challenges of the negative therapeutic reaction, how "transference reactions are the creative soul of the patient's story" and what it was like for him to admit to a patient that he lied to her. We close with his reflecting on the meaning to him of retiring from full time practice, noting "I haven't retired my psychoanalytic mind."   Our Guest: David Joseph, MD is a supervising and training analyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis where he served as chair of the board and director of the Institute Council (education committee). For many years he was the Director of Residency Training at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC.  He has a long-standing interest in ethics and has written and spoken about a number of ethical issues in the practice of psychoanalysis. He closed his clinical practice several years ago, at the age of 82. Former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton surrendered to federal authorities in Maryland, and plead not guilty to all charges he allegedly retained and transmitted classified documents. There are 18 counts in the indictment with potential penalties of up to ten years per count and a maximum fine of $250,000 per count. The FBI raided Bolton's home in August with a search that focused on classified documents they believed he possessed. The Kankakee mallow is one of the rarest plants on the continent, according to the Smithsonian Garden in Washington D.C. It's a pink flower that grows on tall stalks and is native to just one small island in the middle of the Kankakee River, about an hour south of Chicago. But when botanist Rachel Goad paddled over to take a look back in 2014 with a group of native plant enthusiasts, instead they found an island overgrown with invasive honeysuckle. Was this special native plant gone for good? Perhaps, if not for the efforts of a small group of volunteers, initially led by conservationist Trevor Edmonson. “Hearing the phrase that the Kankakee mallow only grows on this island — anywhere in the world, like that is the extent of its remaining natural habitat — is such a draw for anybody, especially someone early on in their career,” Edmonson said.
