S2 Ep. 11: Letter Never Sent (1959, Mikhail Kalatozov)

The Cold War Cinema team, Jason Christian, Anthony Ballas, and Paul T. Klein, return to discuss Mikhail Kalatozov's 1959 drama Letter Never Sent.  Synopsis of the film: Four geologists descend on the Siberian Taiga. Over the course of a backbreaking summer sifting minerals in the icy, rushing waters of boreal rivers, the group–the experienced guide, Konstantin, a young couple, Andrei and Tanya, and the brooding Sergei–search for diamond deposits to enrich themselves and their country. Throughout, Konstanin writes an extended letter home to his wife Vera. Sergei, too, writes a letter, though never meant to be read, expressing his jealousy and Andrei and love for Tanya. When a massive forest fire breaks out, however, the group must work together to survive, not only the blaze, but the ravages of the elements and the fast-approaching and deadly Siberian winter… On this episode we discuss: The unbelievable production of a film shot on location in the USSR taiga.  How the film reflects the tenents of socialist realism in complex and creative ways.  How the film shares many of the sensibilites of the western genre and pairs nicely with John Ford's The Searchers in this regard.  The basic theoretical aspects of scientific socialism and how the filmmaker uses them to shape the film's narrative and themes.  The allegorical use of a diamond in the Soviet context versus the same in the capitalist West.  _____________________ We love to give book or film recommendations on the podcast, so here are ours for this episode:  Paul: Two "Northwesterns": Bend of the River (Anthony Mann, 1952) and River of No Return (Otto Preminger, 1954) Tony: Tacky's Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War by Vincent Brown Jason: Nail in the Boot (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1931) and Socialism: Utopian and Scientific by Friedrich Engels Also, check out this fascinating interview on the Actually Existing Socialism podcast with the scholar Sardana Nikolaeva, who studies the Indigenous peoples of the northern regions of the Soviet Union (and present-day Russia) and their connection to the diamond mines that are imagined in the film.  _____________________ Like and subscribe to Cold War Cinema, and don't forget to leave us a review! Synopsis:  As the federal government's grip on power tightens, a growing movement is harnessing the power of local governments to resist authoritarianism and protect constitutional freedoms. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: There are countless strategies for resisting authoritarianism — many of which we've discussed on this program. This time, we're looking at ways to stop the MAGA Right using the power of cities and states. What's possible when people take federalism seriously and partner with state officials to protect their constitutional freedoms — and elections — from being violated by the federal government? Our guests are organizers and strategists with experience and plans for outmaneuvering MAGA at the state and municipal level. Christopher Armitage is a U.S. Air Force veteran, former law enforcement officer, writer, and founder of “The Existentialist Republic” on Substack. He is the author of a handbook on “Oppositional Federalism”. Sumathy Kumar is the Executive Director of Housing Justice for All and the New York State Tenant Bloc. She was the former Co-Chair of the NYC Democratic Socialists of America and under her leadership, NYC-DSA elected six socialist legislators to the New York State Legislature, including mayor Zohran Mamdani. From withholding federal revenue to building social housing, hear the creative ways people and local governments can turn up the heat. All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“We need to take power away from the Trump administration and from the GOP. That means taking that power and putting it locally . . . Being able to provide a good quality of life in an affordable environment for your residents is soft succession.”“Tenants are half the state in New York, they're 70% of the city . . . What I tell people is that you're not by yourself, you're with millions of other people who want this. It is scary to resist what's happening, especially when we see what ICE is doing, what the federal government is doing to people who stand up. But they are doing that because they are feeling threatened by the resistance . . .” - Sumathy KumarGuests:• Christopher Armitage: Journalist & Policy Strategist; Substack, The Existentialist Republic; Author, Oppositional Federalism• Sumathy Kumar: Executive Director, Housing Justice for All & NY State Tenant Bloc Watch the episode released on YouTube; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). Does Luc Besson's Dracula (2026) Suck? (Yes, It Really Does) | Movie Review

Luc Besson finally made a Dracula movie in 2026… and somehow turned it into a boring, horny, perfume‑addled fever dream instead of a gothic horror classic. In this episode of The Cinema Psychos Show, Brian tears into Dracula (2026) and explains why this shiny new take on the Count feels more like a knockoff of better Dracula films than a bold reinvention. We break down everything that went wrong: Vlad accidentally killing his own wife, God apparently "rewarding" him with vampirism, the unhinged sex‑perfume subplot, cartoonish suicide jumps, rubbery CGI gargoyles, and a tone that ping‑pongs between tragic romance, goofy comedy, and Axe body spray commercial. Brian also digs into Caleb Landry Jones' off‑kilter Dracula, Christoph Waltz on autopilot, and a Danny Elfman score that deserves a much better movie. Along the way, we compare Besson's vision to Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, modern Nosferatu takes, and other adaptations that actually respect the character, and ask the big question: what the hell happened to Luc Besson as a filmmaker? Plus, we dip into some wild online reviews from people who genuinely think this is the best Dracula in years. If you're a horror nerd, Dracula obsessive, or cult cinema sicko who loves hearing a beautiful mess get taken apart scene by scene, you're in the right madhouse. Synopsis:  A crime against journalism': Tune in as experts dissect corporate media's priorities - serving shareholders or informing voters? This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription:  Journalism is at an inflection point. Under a hail of lawsuits, firings, new hires, and mercenary mergers, the business of media is in shambles even as the need for reliable, truthful information to reach voters is greater than ever. Where does that leave journalists? In this episode, Laura and her guests discuss the money media's dangerous denials and obfuscations, the problem with bothsidesism in a time of fascism, and the coverage of Renee Good's killing in Minneapolis. Dean Obeidallah is a lawyer, writer, award-winning comedian and host of SiriusXM radio's national daily program “The Dean Obeidallah Show”. Joy Reid, formerly host of the award-winning ReidOut on MSNBC, is a best-selling author, and host of the Joy Reid Show on YouTube. The decline of legacy media isn't all bad news — especially for those, like Palestinians and others, who were always shut out of it — and the rise of independent platforms, savvy media consumers and new mechanisms for collaboration just might usher in a new age of great journalism, just when we need it. Join Dean, Joy and Laura for this rich conversation on resistance, reporting, and survival.  [This conversation was recorded on January 14, 2026]“What I would like corporate media to understand, their job is not to make money for shareholders and executives to get bonuses, but serve the people, make them smarter, even if it means losing access. I know that's a lot to ask, but that's what I would like because an educated, informed electorate is the key to saving this republic.” - Dean Obeidallah“It is a crime against journalism for the editorial director of a news network to say our job is not to deliver the news, but to go viral. The Cold War Cinema team returns with special guest Aspen Ballas to discuss John Ford's 1956 western The Searchers. Aspen is a PhD student of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research primarily focuses on aesthetics of race and class, and the relation between genre, medium, and politics. Synopsis of the film: Texas, 1868. A lone figure approaches a windswept homestead, against a dusty blue sky and flaming red buttes and cathedral-like mesas. Returning from the fight for the Confederacy, Ethan Edwards arrives home to his brother Aaron, Aaron's wife Martha, and to their children Ben, Lucy, little Debbie, and their adopted son Martin Pawley. But this is rough country, and a Comanche raid leaves the Edwards family torn asunder–Aaron, Martha, and Ben dead, and Lucy and Debbie taken captive. For seven years, Ethan and Martin search the vast wilderness, motivated not only by family bonds, but in Ethan's case, bloodlust and wild, racist hatred–a search not only to find Lucy and Debbie, but to enforce racial and sexual purity and to define Americanness itself… On this episode we discuss: The American mythmaking in The Searchers and in westerns generally.  John Ford's attempt to critique anti-Indigenous racism, and the limitations of such a critique in the context of Hollywood filmmaking of this era.  Militant Liberty, a top-secret psychological warfare program created by the Pentagon to promote anti-communist themes in Hollywood movies during the Cold War. John Ford was an eager participant in the program. The broader US imperialist context of the film's release and the historical background of the setting.  _____________________ We love to give book or film recommendations on the podcast, so here are ours for this episode:  Aspen: The Face on Film by Noa Steimatsky; Raoul Peck's docuseries Exterminate all the Brutes (2021) Paul: The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend by Glenn Frankel    Tony: Unsettled Borders: The Militarized Science of Surveillance on Sacred Indigenous Land by Felicity Amaya Schaeffer   Jason: Versions of  Hollywood Crime Cinema: Studies in Ford, Wilder, Coppola, Scorsese, and Others by Carl Freedman _____________________ Like and subscribe to Cold War Cinema, and don't forget to leave us a review! This show is made possible by you! Description [Original release date July 2025]: With the passage of the Republicans' “Big Beautiful Bill” and NATO allies pledging to more than double their spending on defense as a portion of all economic output, military spending around the world is soaring, while spending on meeting social needs and the climate crisis is on the chopping block. Governments often justify spending public money this way by saying it will create good jobs, but what if the workers themselves had a say? Fifty years ago, employees at Lucas Aerospace, a huge military contractor in the United Kingdom came up with an alternative plan. Their approach, known as the Lucas Plan, used the workers' same expertise, but directed production away from bombs, towards goods that actually help society. In this special episode, Laura heads to the UK to interview some of the original workers involved in the Lucas Plan and investigates what one senior government minister at the time called "one of the most remarkable exercises in all of British industrial history.” As she says, it's as relevant now as the day it was conceived.“What we're talking about is a poor economic choice that's being made to posture . . . and look like a big military power in a world that's growing increasingly unstable.” - Khem Rogaly“One of the things that the Lucas Plan has done is actually made it fairly clear to people that there are choices. You're given the impression that you have to make weapons. No, you don't. You're given the choice . . . The issue here is who controls technology and who should control technology, and should it be used to free people or should it be used to enslave people?” - Philip AsquithGuests:• Brian Salisbury: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Philip Asquith: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Hilary Wainwright: Co-Author, The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?; Co-Editor Red Pepper magazine• Khem Rogaly: Senior Research Fellow, Commonwealth; Author, A Lucas Plan for the Twenty First Century: From Asset Manager Arsenal to Green Industrial Strategy ADDITIONAL CREW: Stanley Arlidge - Episode Producer, Clementine Malpas, Tiger Nest FilmsSPECIAL THANKS: Karen Bell, Joe Guinan, Steve Schofield MUSIC CREDITS:  Thrum of Soil by Blue Dot Sessions and original sound design by Jeannie Hopper  RESOURCES:- Watch the episode released on YouTube July 11th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel July 13th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode) and airing on community radio (check here to see if your station airs the show) & available as a podcast July 16th.-Related Podcast:  Uncut Conversation featuring Brian Salsibury, Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward-Related Podcast:  Uncut Conversation featuring Hilary Wainwright, Co-Author, The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?; Co-Editor Red Pepper magazineFull Episode Notes are located HERE.  Recommended book:• “The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?” by Hilary Wainwright and Dave Elliott, Learn More Related Laura Flanders Show Episodes:Democracy & Capitalism: A Failed Experiment?:  Watch / Listen:  Uncut Conversation - EpisodeCommunity Wealth Building: An Economic Reset:  Watch / Listen:  Uncut Conversation - EpisodeDollars and Democracy: Participatory Budgeting:  Watch / Listen:  Episode•  From Cleveland, OH to Preston, UK.  Community Wealth Building, Watch / Listen: Episode Related Articles and Resources:• A Lucas Plan For the Twenty First Century From Asset Manager Arsenal to Green Industrial Strategy, by Khern Rogsly, October 2024 - Common Welath•  The Lucas Plan the Way to an Alternative Security Strategy, by Khem Royally, December 11, 2024, Rethinking Security• UK to cut green levies on businesses in bid to reduce energy costs and boost manufacturing, by Jessica Elgot and Rob Davies, June 22, 2025, The Guardian•. This show is made possible by you! Description [original release date September 8, 2023]: As we commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 2008 financial crisis, we explore the urgent questions surrounding the extractive nature of capitalism and its impact on democracy and economic inequality. What are the consequences of “capital bias”, an economic and social system that prioritizes wealth and the wealthy at the expense of manufacturing, people and the planet? And in what ways is “wealth supremacy” as deadly as white male supremacy — and every other kind? In this episode, we sit down with Marjorie Kelly, author of the newly-released book “Wealth Supremacy: How the Extractive Economy and the Biased Rules of Capitalism Drive Today's Crises”, and Edgar Villanueva, a member of the Lumbee people and Founder of the Decolonizing Wealth Project. We urgently need a spiritual revolution — could Indigenous perspectives offer alternative ways of thinking about wealth and community? All that, plus an update from Laura on a special collaboration between the Laura Flanders Show and the Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature podcast.“. . . Big capital is out there right now buying water rights . . . Communities are saying no . . . Water needs to be declared a public trust. You have these two completely different worldviews, which show us we can have a financialized world or we can have a democratic world . . .” - Marjorie Kelly “. . . Capitalism was completely founded upon the enslavement of Black people in this country. That is the blueprint for our economy. I don't know how to take racism and harm out of that existing system without completely imagining a new system . . .” - Edgar VillanuevaGuests:Marjorie Kelly: Distinguished Senior Fellow, The Democracy Collaborative; Author, Wealth Supremacy: How the Extractive Economy and the Biased Rules of Capitalism Drive Today's CrisesEdgar Villanueva (Lumbee): Founder & Principal, Decolonizing Wealth Project *Recommended book:“Wealth Supremacy: How the Extractive Economy and the Biased Rules of Capitalism Drive Today's Crises” by Marjorie Kelly Check out the Book(*Bookshop is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. The non-fiction filmmaker Lynne Sachs returns to Filmwax for another memorable visit. Lynne has a new film, "Every Contract Leaves a Trace", which is to have its world premiere at IDFA in Amsterdam on November 17th: Synopsis (from IDFA website): Since 1990, filmmaker Lynne Sachs has collected 600 business cards—from a hairdresser, a therapist, a textile artist. Together they form an archive of encounters. The title of this imaginative essay film, Every Contact Leaves a Trace, is a basic principle of forensic science, coined by Edmond Locard, a pioneer in the field. And any trace can link a person to a place, another person or an object. If that's true, Sachs wonders, might every personal encounter not also leave a trace on your being? To find out, she tracks down some of the people behind the business cards. The thread connecting these hundreds of cards is Sachs herself, so the filmmaker naturally becomes the center of the film. Yet the focus is not on her; as in many of her works spanning more than three decades of film making, she merely provides the perspective—the point of departure. With her warm, contemplative voice-over and playful visual invention, Sachs weaves countless faces and voices into a patchwork of connections. These encounters—whether forgotten or remembered, faint or vivid—have become part of her being. https://youtu.be/1LV-r6VDUfM
