Hi there! Feel free to drop us a text if you enjoy the episode. In this episode we interview Amy Rusiecki — ultrarunner, trail advocate, race director of the iconic Vermont 100 Endurance Race, and race director of the Beast Coast Trail Running Series. We take a deep dive into the origins of the Vermont 100 and how it began as a horse endurance ride and remains one of the only events in the world where horses and runners share the same 100-mile course. Amy discusses what it takes to direct a race of this magnitude, from coordinating dual events to cultivating a tight-knit, supportive race culture.More than just a race, the VT100 is a beacon of inclusivity — proudly being the first trail ultra to welcome adaptive athletes and raising money for the Vermont Adaptive. Amy speaks passionately about her mission to foster a trail running culture that is accessible, welcoming, and community-driven.The conversation also spotlights the Beast Coast Trail Running series, a collection of events (like the Seven Sisters trail race) that embody the rugged charm and spirited camaraderie of New England's trail scene. Amy shares her insights on what makes the East Coast ultrarunning community so unique, why volunteerism is at the heart of these events, and how the region's technical terrain delivers a one-of-a-kind endurance challenge.Key Takeaways:The Vermont 100 is one of the only ultra races where runners and horses compete side by side. The event has a strong, family-like community and emphasizes volunteer participation.VT100 was the first trail ultra to officially include adaptive athletes, pushing the standard for inclusion. The race is working to welcome neurodiverse athletes, part of a broader inclusivity initiative.Beast Coast Trail Running is also a club that has been newly formed for runners located in Western Massachusetts.Art & Eric embark on a journey to showcase and celebrate the endurance sports community in New England.
21 months of war takes its toll among anyone in any society, compounded by 12 days or bombardment by hundreds of Iranian missiles. For those at risk, who have fewer abilities and coping methods on their own, the trauma is even greater, and has a potential long term impact for generations. Children who come from homes that cannot support them, who live in communities that have become front line battlefields, and in cannot feel safe or trust people anywhere. Almost anywhere. Welcome back to All One Song, A Neil Young Podcast presented by Aquarium Drunkard. We're spending the summer talking to a few of our favorite artists and writers about their favorite Neil Young song. This week, you're getting two fantastic guests for the price of one: Meg Baird and Charlie Saufley. Meg first came to my attention thanks to her work with the innovative Philadelphia psych-folk collective Espers, and since then she's created a pretty much flawless solo career — her most recent record, 2023's Furling, is a perfect showcase for her pristine guitar work and beautiful vocals. Charlie Saufley co-produced that record with Meg and the duo also played in Heron Oblivion with Ethan Miller and Noel Von Harmonson — a group that only managed one studio record during their existence, but that's ok. That one studio record was awesome. Charley also played in the Bay Area psychedelic rock group Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound; he's a killer guitarist, and — like Meg — is a serious Neil head. That last fact should be apparent in the tune Meg and Charlie selected for their All One Song appearance: “Interstate.” This brilliantly moody number is a strong candidate for the best Neil Young song that barely anyone knows about. Though you probably know about it if you're here. Neil debuted “Interstate” onstage in 1985 with the International Harvesters. But like so many of his strongest songs during that era, it was set aside for reasons that only Shakey can fathom. A few years later, producer David Briggs convinced him to cut the song with Crazy Horse during the Ragged Glory sessions. It's an incredibly haunting performance, with skeletal acoustic guitars and high, lonesome Horse harmonies. But Neil still wasn't feeling it —we guess “Farmer John” needed to be heard! Finally in 1996, that Ragged Glory performance was released on the Big Time CD single and as a vinyl only bonus track on Broken Arrow. These days, you can get it on the recent “Smell The Horse” edition of Ragged Glory. So yeah, it's a long, twisted story, as is the case with a lot of things in the Neil Young world. But “Interstate” deserves a place in the pantheon of Neil classics, regardless of its relative obscurity. It's this kind of song that turns a casual fan into, well, an obsessive, promising that there's always more buried treasure lurking in the Shakey archives. In this episode, I chat with the founder and managing director of WOW Saddles: David Kempsell. WoW is a revolutionary saddle brand known for its fully adjustable, modular design that supports both horse and rider through every stage of development and performance. We dive into the inspiration behind WoW, the technology that sets it apart (like carbon fiber trees, Flair air flocking, and interchangeable seats and panels) and how this system helps improve comfort, movement, and balance. I've personally ridden in WOW Saddles for over 10 years and have always appreciated their adjustability, comfort, and unique look. Saddle fit is such a personal and important part of horse welfare, and when you find something that works, it's a huge relief. This episode isn't sponsored, I simply love talking about things I genuinely use and believe in. If you're curious about saddle fitting, have a tricky horse to fit, or are tired of trialling saddles that never quite work, you'll enjoy this conversation!
Send us a textHorses are incredibly intuitive, emotional beings—and when they live in a healthy herd, the bonds they form run deep. They rely on one another for safety, companionship, comfort, and connection. So when a change is coming—especially one involving separation—they feel it. Often before we've even said a word.Recently, we began preparing for two of our horses to leave the herd. And before any changes in their routine were made, the herd knew. Their energy shifted. We noticed anxiety, restlessness, and even sadness. They were picking up not only on the subtle signs around them, but on us. Our own internal stress was being mirrored back through their behavior. That's the power of connection—heart coherence and nervous system connection. Our horses are so bonded to us that they feel what we feel. They sense our thoughts, emotions, and expectations—even before we act on them. But when we consciously shifted our emotional state—letting go of worry and stepping into peace, presence, and support—they responded in kind. The anxiety settled. Their curiosity returned. They became more relaxed. It was a powerful reminder that how we show up for them during change can either increase their stress or support their healing. We've also taken steps to help them prepare practically and emotionally. Rather than suddenly removing two horses from the herd, we're making gradual turnout changes and shifting stalls. This helps reduce the dependency on current relationships and gives time for change to be accepted and space for new bonds to form. We're also spending more time communicating with each horse individually—strengthening the human-horse connection through presence and trust. The two horses who are leaving have been together before—they once lived away from the herd for a year and returned as a bonded pair. Reuniting them now helps them remember that partnership, so they feel supported as they transition again.Meanwhile, the remaining herd is already beginning to reshape. Horses like Lovey and Leeta, Lovey and Blue, Callen and Joey—all have unique relationships. And as the dynamic changes, we see new bonds forming, new leadership roles emerging, and a quiet reweaving of the herd's emotional fabric. This is the emotional side of horsemanship we don't often talk about—but it matters. Horses don't just “adjust.” They feel. And when we slow down, listen, and lead from a place of compassion, we help them move through transition with confidence and connection. “You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.” - Swami VivekanandaMay you always be one with your horse,Caroline

In this gripping episode of Dark Outdoors, we uncover a chilling and ongoing mystery unfolding across Texas and beyond—where horses are being found shot, mutilated, or poisoned in a string of brutal and unexplained attacks. From Kendall and Waller Counties to Bexar and Smith, horses are being executed in pastures, dumped in brush, or even tied up and shot in the head. Authorities have few leads—and the killers remain free. We examine whether these killings are tied to the illegal horse meat trade, part of a ritualistic pattern, or the work of thrill killers. And we expand our search beyond Texas—to Nevada—where a serial horse killer is targeting ranch animals near Las Vegas with chilling precision. With exclusive insight from Higher Calling Wildlife's investigative reports, this episode dives deep into what may be a multi-state pattern of cruelty, fear, and silence. If you're a rancher, horse owner, or outdoor enthusiast, you won't want to miss this investigation into what might be the most underreported animal cruelty crime wave in the U.S.

I am excited to welcome Jessica Fobert as my guest today!Over the past decade, Jessica and I have worked together on many challenging cases, and I have come to value her input as a trusted second opinion for my clients. She is a hoof care practitioner and lifelong horse lover, registered with both the Canadian Equine Hoof Care Association and Progressive Hoof Care Practitioners. She and her business partner, Natalie, run a rehab facility in Toddham, Ontario, where they take on the toughest of cases. Join us as Jessica dives into the critical work she does at the rehab, debunking common trimming myths and highlighting the crucial importance of proper hoof care. Many Cases Go UndiagnosedOwners and professionals alike should be vigilant and proactive, as subclinical laminitis often goes unnoticed. Many horses can have inflammation without full-blown laminitic episodes, and even minor hoof distortion, recurring abscesses, or poor posture may be early signs. Inflammation Hoof inflammation starts before any rotation or visible damage occurs. It typically results from systemic stress, poor nutrition, or mechanical imbalance. While X-rays may not reveal early changes, heat, soreness, gait alterations, or behavioral changes can indicate trouble brewing inside the foot.Movement and Circulation Stabling a sore horse may seem protective, but confinement reduces circulation and delays healing. Movement is crucial to restoring hoof health. Gentle, controlled exercise within the comfort zone of the horse, often with the help of boots, can significantly improve blood flow and tissue regeneration.BootsBoots help reduce inflammation and promote healing, allowing sore horses to move more comfortably. However, they are not a permanent solution. Avoid Over-trimming Trimming should preserve the sole and reduce leverage without forcing the foot into an artificial shape. Over-trimming or removing too much sole worsens instability.Be Cautious with Certain TreatmentsCorrosive thrush treatments may kill bacteria but can also damage live tissue, making reinfection more likely. Non-corrosive antimicrobials can restore microbial balance without damaging sensitive tissue, soothing the foot, and helping to reset its microbial environment. Consistency and gentle application are the key.Gut Health Thrush and white line disease can recur when gut health is compromised. High-sugar, high-starch diets fuel inflammation and weaken hoof tissue from the inside. Horses fed low-NSC diets will often show rapid hoof improvement. In some cases, long-standing issues like contracted heels and white line disease will resolve completely within months of a diet change.Lasting ChangeLasting hoof changes must be supported from the inside, as no trim can undo the effects of a poor diet. Contracted heels, long toes, and weak hoof structures are often diet-driven. Even horses that have been trimmed carefully for years may not improve until their processed feeds get replaced with low-sugar alternatives. The Power of MovementMovement is essential for healing hooves. Even sore horses should be allowed to move freely within their comfort range. Boots can encourage movement, reducing pain and enabling gradual increases in circulation and use. Metal ShoesMetal shoes may provide instant relief for some horses. However, they increase concussion and vibration, which can worsen laminitic damage over time. Whenever possible, barefoot is ideal, but there are situations where temporary shoeing provides a helpful bridge.Euthanasia Is a Complex DecisionFor owners facing the possibility of euthanasia

With a loyal, engaged fanbase and an addiction for pushing boundaries, the show delivers the perfect blend of humor and insight, all while keeping things fun, fresh, and sometimes a little bit illegal. 2024 © 2021 Audacy, Inc.
