Forty-five years ago today, Americans were fixated on a news story of a nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. Despite not a single person suffering “adverse effects” — not to mention dying — the media used sensational coverage to contribute to the misconceptions and irrational fear about one of the most efficient, effective, and safest ... The Register reports that the number of senior business executives stymied by an ongoing phishing campaign continues to rise with cybercriminals registering hundreds of cloud account takeovers, or ATOs, over the past 90 days. CEOs and other C-Suite positions are targets for the attackers, as well as VPs, sales directors, and finance managers. The overarching goal, as with all these types of assaults, is to gain access to as many privileged accounts as possible and tap into all the resources available for follow-on crimes. Successful account takeover attacks are often the result of weak and reused passwords. Cybsafe recommends defining and enforcing a strong password policy that includes turning on multi-factor authentication, or MFA, for all accounts. Episode Notes Hyatt has joined MGM Resorts and Marriott in changing how they disclose resort fees on their websites and apps. However, those modifications still won't quiet the growing uproar over so-called junk fees, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. In July, Hyatt began displaying nightly rates plus mandatory resort fees upfront on a traveler's first search of its site and app. Hyatt's move to more clearly disclose resort fees follows in the footsteps of Marriott and MGM Resorts. However, O'Neill notes the three companies still face unresolved grievances from some consumer advocates and government representatives. He adds one of the lingering issues is how hotel rates and fees are displayed on online travel agencies' websites and apps. The three hotel groups have also quoted prices without including resort fees in ad and marketing campaigns. Next, amusement park corporation Six Flags has become the latest travel brand to hop on the artificial intelligence bandwagon. Six Flags is planning to release generative AI tools in partnership with Google Cloud, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes. Dawes reports Six Flags is looking to release AI chatbots on updated versions of its app and park websites later this year. Six Flags said the virtual assistants would provide personalized recommendations and answers for visitors planning their trips. Google CEO Thomas Kurian said generative AI would enable Six Flags to redefine guest experiences. Finally, India's hotel occupancy and room rates have finally recovered to pre-pandemic levels, writes Middle East and Asia Reporter Amrita Ghosh in the Skift India Newsletter. Ghosh reports that soaring demand for next month's G20 Summit is a major reason for India's strong hotel performance. One travel executive said the roughly 200 G20 meetings already held throughout India have placed some lesser-known destinations on the global tourism map. Meanwhile, FCM Consulting's latest Global Trends Report revealed that India had Asia's highest hotel occupancy rates in the first half of this year.

The UK is recovering slower than just about anyone from the pandemic. The UK's GDP is flat compared to where it was four years ago, whereas most countries have recovered from the pandemic, and then some. Inflation rose faster than most comparable economies and is taking longer to come down. So why is the UK struggling so much. This week Phil asks Steve the obvious question, has Brexit got something to do with it? And what role does a growing trade deficit play in the tardiness of Britain's recovery? Hosted on Acast. On this day, June 26th, in legal history, the Statute of the International Court of Justice was signed, establishing the International Court of Justice at The Hague. The history of the Statute of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) can be traced back to its predecessor, the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ), which was established under the League of Nations in accordance with Article 14 of the Covenant of the League of Nations. The Council of the League of Nations was responsible for developing the idea of the PCIJ and formed an Advisory Committee of Jurists in 1920 to prepare a report on its establishment. A draft scheme was subsequently presented to the League's Assembly and was unanimously adopted as the Statute of the PCIJ in 1920.While the PCIJ operated independently from the League of Nations, it played a crucial role in resolving contentious cases and providing advisory opinions from 1922 to 1940. In 1946, the ICJ was established with its own Statute, building upon the foundations of the PCIJ's Statute. This process involved redrafting the statute with adjustments based on historical experience. The United Nations Committee of Jurists and the Fourth Committee of the United Nations Conference on International Organization (UNCIO) in San Francisco in 1945 were responsible for finalizing the ICJ Statute. One significant innovation introduced by the ICJ Statute was its close relationship with the United Nations Charter, which provided a structural interrelationship between the ICJ and the broader framework of the United Nations. Significantly, the ICJ defines its role in the judicial settlement of international disputes, as the judicial organ of the legal order of the international community as a whole, and not only of the contending parties appearing before it.Here is kind of a mini-column Tuesday, on a Monday. I wrote in the Week in Insights for Bloomberg on a recent study that had some interesting implications for where the IRS should be directing its influx of capital under the Inflation Reduction Act.Recent research from Harvard University reveals that auditing high-income individuals yields a higher return, with a $1 investment in audits of the top 10% income bracket resulting in a $12 return, compared to $5 for those below the median income. These findings hopefully have policy implications for the IRS and will impact tax practitioners and taxpayers.Week in Insights: Harvard Study Shows Auditing the Rich Pays OffThe US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Coinbase Global Inc., affirming the company's ability to direct customer and employee disputes into arbitration. The decision, with a 5-4 vote, states that lawsuits filed in federal court must be paused while the defendant pursues an appeal to send the case to arbitration. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the court, argued that allowing district courts to proceed with pre-trial and trial proceedings during an ongoing appeal would undermine the advantages of arbitration. Business groups supported Coinbase, claiming that permitting litigation to continue would impose unnecessary costs, while consumer advocates argued that judges should have discretion in deciding which claims can proceed during an appeal. The case involved claims against Coinbase by Abraham Bielski regarding losses due to a scammer and allegations of inadequate disclosure in a Dogecoin sweepstakes. The ruling reinforces the power of companies to enforce arbitration clauses and the benefits associated with arbitration agreements in various industries, including the cryptocurrency sector.Coinbase Wins at Supreme Court as Ruling Backs Arbitration (1)U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith has requested a delay in the start of former President Donald Trump's trial on charges of willful retention of classified government records and obstruction of justice. Smith asked the federal judge to push the trial start date from August 14 to December 11, citing the need for reasonable time for effective preparation. Trump, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election, pleaded not guilty to the charges in a federal court in Miami. The trial will adhere to the Classified Information Procedures Act, which governs the handling and disclosure of classified evidence. Smith stated that the delay is necessary to allow Trump's lawyers to obtain security clearances and review classified documents. While Trump's lawyers do not oppose scrapping the August 14 start date, they are expected to file a motion opposing the proposed schedule.US special counsel seeks delay to start of Trump documents trial until December | ReutersU.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has denied allegations made by an Internal Revenue Service whistleblower that the investigation into Hunter Biden's tax affairs was impeded by the Justice Department. Garland stated that U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed by former President Trump, had complete authority to make charging decisions on his own regarding Hunter Biden's case. Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to pay income taxes. The charges were revealed in a court filing by Weiss's office, and Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to the charges. Republicans have criticized the plea deal, claiming it is a lenient arrangement. A transcript of an interview with an IRS agent involved in the probe, Gary Shapley, was released, alleging that the Justice Department delayed the case. Shapley claimed that Weiss sought permission to bring charges from anywhere in the country but was denied by Garland. Garland denied the claim, stating that Weiss never made such a request, and emphasized that Weiss had more authority than a special counsel. Hunter Biden's attorney also defended the thoroughness of the investigation.U.S. attorney general denies allegations that Hunter Biden tax probe was stymied | ReutersThe U.S. Justice Department has filed criminal charges against four Chinese chemical manufacturing companies and eight individuals for allegedly trafficking the chemicals used to produce fentanyl, a highly addictive painkiller that has contributed to the opioid crisis in the United States. This marks the first time the U.S. has sought to prosecute Chinese companies involved in manufacturing precursor chemicals for fentanyl. China's foreign ministry responded by urging the U.S. to stop using fentanyl-related pretexts to sanction and prosecute Chinese entities, demanding the release of those "illegally arrested." The move comes after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China, where he emphasized the need for Chinese cooperation to address the fentanyl trade. The indicted companies are accused of supplying precursor chemicals to Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, which has flooded the U.S. with fentanyl. The cases aim to disrupt the fentanyl supply chain and highlight the unique threat posed by the synthetic drug. In addition, Blinken announced plans to convene a virtual ministerial meeting to establish a Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats.US files first-ever charges against Chinese fentanyl manufacturers | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

RNZ can reveal moves to bring in stronger fire protection rules for high density in-fill housing have been stymied. A year of work went into toughening up the rules to slow down the spread of fire in townhouses and other new types of intensive housing. But these were withdrawn just days before the fatal Loafers Lodge fire in Wellington last Tuesday. And as Phil Pennington reports it was partly because the housing industry is worried the changes will push up building costs.

We skiers are a resilient lot. We have to be. The sport that feels embedded in the most elemental fibers of our being requires winter. I realize that last statement isn't entirely true, but anyone who mistakes indoor skiing or sliding on sand or grass or nylon filaments for the real deal is in a deep state of denial. The essence of skiing is inseparable from mountains and snow, bringing powerful forces to bear on any and all who dare to brave both. One of skiing's baked-in ironies is that the skiing is best when you can't get to it. The same storms that dump their abundant goodness on the mountains also visit all the roads that lead there, often rendering any attempt at access an extended exercise in impatience.

Kylen Mills joins Cyrus Saatsaz for a live episode to recap a disappointing Golden State Warriors loss to the Indiana Pacers that snapped the team's 10 game home winning streak thanks to Klay Thompson's strong effort being neutralized by Stephen Curry scoring a season low 12 points, Jonathan Kuminga coming into the game late despite the team missing Andrew Wiggins and the team simply not matching their opponent's energy, effort and aggressiveness.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Warriors Podcast on these platforms…

The Commanders travelled to Landover, MD to play an away game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The result was predictable and has Dalton questioning his fandom. Rick and Brendan share in the misery as they break down the Commanders' offensive woes and wonder whether the defense's performance constitutes a bounce back for Jack Del Rio's squad. As always, the guys recognize this week's stars and scrubs by passing out all the fixins' and snuffing torches. PLUS, the guys talk about the team's big mascot reveal. 00:00 Dalton's rant/game breakdown17:30 Mascot news24:09 Fixins' and torch snuffing
The Atlanta Braves lost their third consecutive game, falling short despite another late rally in a 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The latest defeat denied Atlanta a chance to pick up a game on the first place New York Mets, who lost to the Cubs but still hold a 1.5 game lead in the NL East race. Grant McAuley recaps the action and previews Game 2 on Tuesday.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Locked On Cardinals - Daily Podcast On The St. Louis Cardinals Podcast
Corbin Burnes was dominant last night, as he usually is against the St. Louis Cardinals. Combine that with an over-aggressive (and rare) mistake by Brendan Donovan and you get a 2-0 loss. St. Louis will now look to win two of the next three, and it turns to Jack Flaherty to do that in game two. Flaherty will look to execute more in his second start of the season. The show finishes up talking about the lack of production from Cardinal catchers this season. WANT MORE DAILY ST. LOUIS CARDINALS CONTENT? Follow & Subscribe to the Podcast on these platforms…

We look back at the lesser-known stories from the Watergate scandal - which is marking 50 years today. Rick Massimo shares some of the stories from his week-long series on Watergate which ultimately led to the first resignation of a sitting U.S. President. And where are the voters? That's the question D.C. election officials are asking. We discuss what the low early voting count means for the D.C. Mayor race and how the candidates feel about major issues with WTOP's Will Vitka.

How many times has President Joe Biden blamed today’s painful inflation on “Putin’s price hike?” No need to count — he’s done it a lot. The problem has always been, of course, that inflation, including energy inflation, began well before Russia’s Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in late February.

Full practice authority permits nurse practitioners, who are nurses with advanced degrees, to deliver healthcare without unnecessary barriers or restrictions. Currently, 26 states across the United States grant full practice authority for NPs. In this episode, we hear from Lynn Heard, a family nurse practitioner and longtime school nurse. She's based in Pennsylvania, a reduced practice state, meaning NPs must have a collaborative agreement with two physicians in order to prescribe medicine and provide their full spectrum of care. At the start of the pandemic, Heard lost her collaborative agreement after the physician she worked with closed down their practice. Since then, she's had trouble finding new physicians to collaborate with and has scaled back her family practice considerably. We also hear from Bonnie McFarland and Susan Donces, two of Heard's longtime patients. Since Lynn does not have a collaborating physician, McFarland can no longer see her and refuses to choose a new primary care provider. Donces continues to see Heard as her primary healthcare provider, but she cannot receive prescribed medication. Part 2 of our special coverage will discuss the broader scope of practice trends across the country. Joining us for that conversation are Pennsylvania State Senator Camera Bartolotta to talk about removing barriers to care here in Pennsylvania, along with nurse practitioner and state policy expert Tay Kopanos from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. To learn more about full practice authority, listen to our previous episode, The Fight for Full Practice Authority in Pennsylvania, which features various NPs who are advocating for themselves and their patients.
A spritely crossword by Richard Allen, Jean cruised through it in no-time flat, Mike was temporarily STYMIEd as he made a SUBTLE error (literally, answering 38A, So as not to stand out, as SUBTLE, rather than SUBTLY).
