A glowing faceless figure stalks the lonely roads of western Pennsylvania—or so the legend goes. But behind the terrifying tale of Charlie No-Face was Ray Robinson, a real man whose tragic childhood accident transformed him into the infamous Green Man of Pennsylvania. Then, Kat and Jethro explore the bizarre, darkly funny, and sometimes completely unhinged final words of executed criminals—including baked-apple jokes, complaints about SpaghettiOs, one killer's suggested newspaper headline, and Aileen Wuornos' promise to return with Jesus aboard a giant mothership. Urban legends, death-row one-liners, and a Rolex rescued from the sewer after 18 months. Just another perfectly normal episode of The Box of Oddities. Learn more about your ad choices. There are surprising character reveals, unsurprising character twists (well, at least Peter was surprised), interesting guest-star choices, and a lot of themes involving the dangers of letting yourself become isolated. Put on your summer best and board a ferry to New England’s hottest tourist destination! It’s time for us to discuss “Widow’s Bay,” a funny horror story about the mayor and other denizens of a cursed island. Of course there’s a creepy clown, and a slasher, and a dark secret that goes back centuries. Of course Stephen Root is wild-eyed! Once you visit Widow’s Bay, you’ll never want to leave… which is good, because you might not be able to. Jason Snell with Annette Wierstra, Tony Sindelar and Monty Ashley.
Our guest on this week's episode is Jo Marini, CEO of Mothership Materials. Many companies have struggled with how to produce products that are well-made and also friendly to our environment. That is where a company like Mothership Materials comes in. This company takes agricultural waste and turns it into fibers and materials for manufacturing new products. Susan Lacefield of Supply Chain Xchange and DC Velocity talks to Jo Marini, the founder and CEO of Mothership Materials, about her transformative company. Here is their conversation.Senior Editor Victoria Kickham reports that business activity in logistics slowed in July, driven by a variety of factors, according to the latest Logistics Managers' Index report. The index fell to 68.9; that's down from June's reading of 71.1, which was the LMI's fastest rate of expansion in about four years. The cooling we saw in July reflects an inventory pullback among retailers who had stocked up in May and June due to tariff uncertainty and the impending expiration of temporary tariffs at the end of the month. Essentially, companies built up inventory earlier in the cycle to prepare for the coming holiday peak season.Senior News Editor Ben Ames was on the road this week for the grand opening of Toyota Material Handling North America's new forklift manufacturing facility. This new factory is in Columbus, Indiana and is almost 300,000 square feet in size. Following a ramp up through September, the new factory will produce 24 lift trucks per day. It will manufacture only electric powered forklifts, specifically a standup counterbalanced forklift. It’s one of the best “Star Trek” movies, a classic Dad Movie, and the start of a franchise that never really started. It’s “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” in which oceans have become battlefields and privateer ships lurk like horror-movie monsters. Don’t get attached to any of those nice young sailors! Jason Snell with Steven Schapansky, Philip Michaels and Brian Warren.
This week on Science Faction, life milestones collide with pop culture as Ben celebrates finally paying off over two decades of student loans while Devon contemplates a lifetime of payments. The crew also dives into Star Trek, Mothership, San Diego Comic-Con reveals, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Cowboy Bebop, and an unexpectedly deep rabbit hole exploring the technology behind the original Jurassic Park. As always, it's a mix of real life, science fiction, and everything wonderfully nerdy in between. Real Life Ben reached a major milestone this week by finally paying off his student loans after 21 years. It's the kind of accomplishment that deserves a celebration, especially considering how many people are still carrying student debt decades after graduating. Devon balanced out the optimism by joking that he's probably never going to finish paying his off. Steven has been spending time with Mothership: Wages of Sin, another adventure for the acclaimed sci-fi horror RPG. If you're interested in checking it out, you can find it here: https://www.tuesdayknightgames.com/collections/mothership Ben also finds himself in an unfamiliar situation: waiting on absolutely nothing. Instead, he talked about his latest favorite gadget, the Clicks Keyboard for smartphones: https://www.clicks.tech/powerkeyboard The Star Trek discussion continued with Star Trek: Axanar – The Gathering Storm, where Faran Tahir's appearance was a welcome surprise. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFpTiIHNTJ0&pp=ygUGYXhhbmFy That naturally led into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4's episode Valles Marineris, which managed to answer the timeless question: What if Star Trek had dinosaurs? The crew discusses whether that's exactly what Trek needed—or never knew it needed. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Valles_Marineris_(episode) Future or Now San Diego Comic-Con brought plenty of announcements to unpack, including new reveals surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean-Pool, and the surprise pairing of Ghost Rider and Starfighter. Ryan Reynolds continues to find creative ways to keep Deadpool in the spotlight. https://entertainmentnow.com/marvel-studios-movies-comics/ryan-reynolds-sdcc-deadpool/ Ben also rounds up several pieces of Avatar: The Last Airbender news, including the upcoming animated Aang film and the newly announced sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens. https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-in-theaters https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-seven-havens-release-date-revealed After finally finishing the original Cowboy Bebop anime and its movie, Ben shares his thoughts on why the series has remained such a classic for nearly three decades. The conversation then shifts into one of the nerdiest rabbit holes imaginable: a painstaking technical breakdown of every computer seen in the original Jurassic Park. It's a fascinating look at how the filmmakers blended real hardware with Hollywood magic. https://fabiensanglard.net/jurrasic_park_computers/index.html That naturally prompts Devon to shout, "SAM NEILL DIED! LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!" before everyone remembers they're actually talking about his characters. The discussion quickly turns into a debate over Sam Neill's best science fiction performance. Is it the cosmic horror masterpiece Event Horizon (1997), or the vampire thriller Daybreakers (2009)? To wrap things up, the crew also highlights Jurassic Systems, a fan project dedicated to faithfully recreating the iconic computer interfaces from Jurassic Park. https://www.jurassicsystems.com/ As always, expect plenty of tangents, questionable opinions, and passionate debates about dinosaurs, spaceships, anime, and why fictional operating systems from 1993 still look cooler than the ones we use today.

What happens when a Mothership scenario is brought into Mage: The Ascension?Adam examines Gradient Descent, a science-fiction horror scenario set aboard an abandoned android factory controlled by an AI called Monarch. The station contains valuable technology, discarded androids, copied human minds, unreliable allies, zero-gravity hazards, and an intelligence determined to make visitors question whether they were ever human. The episode considers how to use the Deep as an Iteration X construct, how Monarch might connect to the Matriarch or Threat Null, and how the scenario can work for Technocrats, Tradition mages, Disparates, acolytes, or extraordinary citizens.Show Notes Mothership - A sci-fi horror TTRPG with OSR-style, d100 rules and stress/panic mechanics, inspired by Alien and Event Horizon. Gradient Descent - A 64-page sci-fi horror megadungeon for Mothership, written by Luke Gearing, illustrated by Nick Tofani, published by Tuesday Knight Games (2020) Iteration X and Technocracy campaign hooks Correspondence, Life, Mind, hacking, and scenario balance Why the station works best outside the Umbra

What if “The Martian” but with an alien buddy? We break down “Project Hail Mary,” and marvel at what a good translation of a sort-of-unfilmable book it really is! Why do we love alien puppets so much? Why is Jason checking his watch at the end? We give this movie a thumbs down—by which we mean we liked it! Amaze amaze amaze! Jason Snell with Aleen Simms, Quinn Rose, Brian Warren and Casey Liss.

We Sound Crazy goes live from the National Museum of African American Music in downtown Nashville for one of the most important conversations in show history, sitting down with the Godfather of Funk himself, George Clinton. For more than 60 years, Clinton has pushed the boundaries of creativity, imagination and sound. Through Parliament Funkadelic, he created an entire universe pioneered by the P-Funk movement, helped define Afrofuturism, and laid the foundation for generations of artists across funk, R&B, hip hop and beyond. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient, and one of the most sampled artists in music history, Clinton sits with hosts Phillionaire, Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony of Louis York, and Tamone Bacon for a wide-ranging conversation about funk, culture, business and legacy. In a first for We Sound Crazy, he is also presented with the inaugural WSC Vanguard Award, a new honor created to celebrate trailblazers whose impact reshaped the entire landscape of Black music. The conversation moves everywhere the man has been. Clinton revisits the doo-wop and Motown years and explains why failing charm school is exactly what set Parliament Funkadelic free to invent the funk. He breaks down Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and the Minimoog, the night 100,000 Afros bounced at Soldier Field, the bar mitzvah melody that secretly became Flashlight, and how the barbershop in Newark, New Jersey is responsible for 98 percent of his songwriting process. He talks Kendrick Lamar, his dream collaboration with D'Angelo, Prince and Sly Stone, what he tried to get Snoop to do with a royalty statement party, his mentorship of Prince, and the copyright recapture fight he is leading through his nonprofit Protecting Our Legacy. He also reveals he is in Nashville right now because a brand new Mothership is being built in the city, ready to fly at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on July 5th. And he addresses the question every artist is wrestling with right now: artificial intelligence, what he saw coming in 1977 with Funkentelechy, and why he is more interested in making AI funky than he is afraid of it. Press play for one of the most important voices in music history, in his own words, on his own time. We Sound Crazy is your backstage pass to all things music and culture. "You guys heard about the invasion tonight?" A Brazilian psychic has predicted an alien invasion during the Brazil-Scotland game in Miami tonight. Are we rooting for this to happen? Plus, Jeremy joins us live from the Marlins game to tell us whether or not he was freeballin' under the kilt he wore at the Tartan Army takeover at the Marlins' game on Monday night. But most importantly, Zaslow takes a moment to send our love and condolences to David Samson after he announced the passing of his daughter, Kyra. William Gibson Book Club reconvenes to close out the legendary Sprawl trilogy with “Mona Lisa Overdrive,” a book in which there are lots of vibes from a lot of people who are secondary characters in a story being driven by an AI that we never really meet. Robot art projects! Many overlapping jackets, none of them the same size! And a car ride to… the future?! We break it all down. Jason Snell with Antony Johnston, Erika Ensign, Lisa Schmeiser and Glenn Fleishman.

Ron Taylor, the winner of Netflix's Funny AF, sits down with Tom to break it all down, from the electric energy of the finale to the surprising strategy that accidentally worked in his favor. Ron grew up in Detroit, stumbled onto a stage at 18 with zero material, and spent 16 years grinding through black rooms, mainstream clubs, and bar shows before getting his shot. He and Tom go deep on what separates a real comedy special from just a collection of jokes, why a tight 60 minutes will always beat a self-indulgent 90, and how Ron's questionable time management might have actually won him the whole thing. They also get into the nuances of the roast comedy debate, a game of "Tom or Black?", check out some horrible or hilarious clips, and Ron's honest take on what the Mothership crowd feels like compared to the Comedy Store.
