[Uncut] The Myth Of Physical Video Game Preservation, Buying Physical Isn't Preserving Anything

I am sure this will be a controversial video among my fellow retro-gamers, but in this vid I talk about why I don't buy into always having to purchase physical games to "own them", and how digital is the future for ALL video games, even your favorite Super Nintendo or Sega Saturn titles. To me, I think aesthetic appeal is getting conflated with the idea of both personal and global preservation of games. I made this video because I do think there is an underlying marketing motivation for all these retro-gaming youtubers to push this viewpoint, even when it is hypocritical and contradicts itself

This has been a topic that has been on my mind for months now. I have been a fan of Mike's for a long time and saw that he was struggling with the same issue of trying to communicate his thoughts and opinions with his audience, as well as experiencing upload burnout. I'm very proud of how this episode turned out and definitely encourage you all to give it a listen, even if it doesn't fit exactly into the narrow specifics of shmups or JRPGs (for Mike's listeners). Whether people want to acknowledge the issues we discuss in the episode or not, these struggles do affect video game players and content makers. Maybe this episode will be a bit too real for some people, it'll be interesting to see. Massive thanks again to Mike for coming on the episode. Like I mention at the end, it's been nearly impossible for me to collab with anyone outside the shmup scene because of how clique YouTube culture works and how people must view me as some sort of biter or joke because of my low view count. Mike coming on the ep shows that he's a real homie. All the music from this episode was taken from Mike's amazing video: "How Music Moves Us." This week's episode is a unique one because it is a follow up interview. Eaglet, today's guest, was actually the 2nd person I ever interviewed for the podcast. However, during that first interview, I was not aware of his achievements in Battle Garegga, and did not learn about them till halfway through the interview. So, once the first interview was finished, I decided that I was going to do my homework and ask Eaglet back for an encore performance, which he kindly agreed to do. I think this episode turned out really well and I highly encourage everyone out there to give it a listen. Also, the awesome cover of Fly to the Leaden Sky featured in the episode was done by Eaglet himself.

I ended up deciding to have this first episode just be a solo podcast where I sort of introduce myself. Moving forward I plan on bringing guests onto the show and having discussions on various topics related to STGs. If your interested on coming on the show as a guest, feel free to reply to this thread or the open call for guests thread.

On today's episode, I speak with David Payne from Salt Lake City. David, also known as Dpful on these forums, is not only an OG collector of PCB's, but also a musician and a creator of his own unique shmup and arcade cabinets. The name of David's game is "JPO in SLC." David was a fantastic first guest and I think you guys are in for an enjoyable and unexpected listen.
