If that sounds like something that rules (and we do), please do make sure you subscribe as we return each Monday. This is Season 3, Episode 8, an EXTRA episode in this new season, one that we managed to make happen very recently and have snuck it in the schedule like a blooming lovely extra course from a fancy restaurant. So, the guest this week is Colin Doran from the legendary UK rock band, Hundred Reasons. Yep, big! Colin came to hosts Matt and Remfry with his Top 3 PS2 Games, a subject so utterly down both of their streets, it may as well have been Top 3 Duos Called Matt and Remfry! The trio geek and nerd out to an extreme level this week, and talk all things PS2, retro gaming, shoot ‘em ups (or SHMUPS), best consoles in history and much much more. Again, we are placing a very firm NERD ALERT for this episode. We hope you enjoy this episode and this podcast, if you want to support it and us, please do follow us on social media (all 3magicnumberpod), from Instagram to Tik Tok, Youtube to Bluesky and X, (even though it's awful). In it we throw in all manner of info relating to each weeks podcast, as well as exclusive playlists, Tuesday top 3, a subscriber exclusive matt vs Remfry podcast (at the end of the season) and loads more. Totally free! Totally class.

In the latest episode of Bring the Pain, I kick it old school and decide to bring the music, with an episode dedicated to shoot-em up games. Being part of a video game music community, it has allowed me to meet some amazing people who share the same passion in life and gaming. This all started when an Erie native, the Messenger, posted his podcast, A VGM Journey, on a mutual website. From there, I joined his VGM Journey Discord, which helped me connect with everyone and their podcasts. This podcast is for all of them and everyone else who loves video game music. In the end, I have a special dedication to three podcasters who have helped start me down this journey into vgmania. Have a great day, everyone, and may the tunes be with you. Thank you for the support and contributions all of you make for my podcasts and articles each week. Y'all the real #Painbringers! This week on The Free Cheese, we are back in Greek mythology! Our first MSX game joins The List with Konami's Knightmare. We take control of the hero Popolon and battle through 8 stages, one line at a time. Knightmare transforms a traditional arcade shooter into an epic adventure but where does it lie within Konami's legacy?
This week on The Free Cheese, infinite spiders! We add our first game to The List for Season 12, another of Compile's catalogue. The Guardian Legend combines top-down shooting with top-down exploration. We discuss how the blend of genres works to create something new and where this game ultimately falls in the history of the NES' library.
The gang takes on three very short but action-packed shoot 'em ups: Omega Blast for the Mega Drive, Dangan GB2 for the Game Boy Color, and Flight of Pigarus for the Master System. We're back with another theme episode! It's Stage 1 music from Shmups, STGs, Bullet hell, whatever you want to call it. I got the idea for the playlist when doing the Hitoshi Sakimoto episode because I have a ton of these games that I wanted to talk about and while some of them will definitely get full episodes in future, and there's plenty of games not on this list I can talk about, it seemed ilke a fun excuse to nerd out about some classics as well as a few deeper cuts. Tonight the boys go balls deep into some sweet sweet SHMUPS...again! ________________________________________________________________________ Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcT8wcspekw5tSzbc3qWPCg/join ________________________________________________________________________ Shoot 'em ups (also known as shmups or STGs[1][2]) are a sub-genre of shooter video games, which are in turn a sub-genre of action video games. There is no consensus as to which design elements compose a shoot 'em up; some restrict the definition to games featuring spacecraft and certain types of character movement, while others allow a broader definition including characters on foot and a variety of perspectives. The genre's roots can be traced back to earlier shooting games, including target shooting electro-mechanical games of the mid-20th-century and the early mainframe game Spacewar! (1962). The shoot 'em up genre was established by the hit arcade game Space Invaders, which popularised and set the general template for the genre in 1978, and spawned many clones. The genre was then further developed by arcade hits such as Asteroids and Galaxian in 1979. Shoot 'em ups were popular throughout the 1980s to early 1990s, diversifying into a variety of subgenres such as scrolling shooters, run-and-gun games and rail shooters. In the mid-1990s, shoot 'em ups became a niche genre based on design conventions established in the 1980s, and increasingly catered to specialist enthusiasts, particularly in Japan. "Bullet hell" games are a subgenre of shooters that features overwhelming numbers of enemy projectiles, often in visually impressive formations. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. The Sega Genesis released in 1989, but it was not until Sonic the Hedgehog would release in June of 1991 that Sega would really begin to gain market share against Nintendo. The release of Sonic as well as an aggressive ad campaign, would lead to Sega bringing serious competition to Nintendo for the first time. Sega followed up the Genesis with creating the Sega CD which brought a new level of audio as well as improved visuals to the system. Unfortunately, Sega released the 32X shortly before the Saturn would release and would essentially mark the beginning of Sega retreating from console manufacturing. We discuss all of that and a whole lot more on this episode of the Nerdthusiast Gaming Podcast! Time Stamps: (00:00 - 5:19) - Intro, Game Stor(ies) (5:20 - 13:31) - Console Variations (13:32 - 26:35) - Sonic and other mascot platformers (26:36 - 37:11) - Konami Games, RC Pro AM, Earthworm Jim, Golden Axe, Moonwalker (37:12 - 51:46) - Sports Games, Shinobi, some other genesis bangers (51:47 - 1:07:16) - Unique Titles like Toe Jam and Earl, Vector Man, Comix Zone etc. plus Sega Channel (1:07:17 - 1:18:20) - Shmups, Fighters, 6 button controller (1:18:21 - 1:38:29) - Sega CD (1:38:30 - 1:49:09) - 32X Intro/Outro Art & Graphics by: Bernardo DelCast Intro/Outro music by: 8 Bit Universe Discover more of their music at: YouTube.com/8bituniverse
They're obscure. They're underrated. They're our choices for the Arcade Obscura shmups! Mr. SNK brings us a lovely bouquet of Sega space shooter (please consult with your physician before playing). Rob (AKA Ron, AKA Robdog Storm) goes meta with an arcade shooter about arcade characters that takes place in an arcade. PastBlaster tells a tale as old as time about an alien invasion, a President involved in a sex scandal, and animal abductions. How did the death of a bowling alley breath new life into a ton of candy cabs? When will we get a Kirby shmup? Did you know the Nazca lines are real and there's a game company named for them? Tune in for the real conclusion to our shmup miniseries!
We're bringing the Flying Pancake in for a landing on the Shmup Dump miniseries with Psikyo's Strikers 1945 series. Can you stop the evil forces of C.A.N.Y. and find the very suggestive secret ending? How many times is PastBlaster going to mispronounce the Focke-Wulf aircraft? Can you guess the four NeoGeo games in Mr. SNK's 4-slot MVS? We also explore the history of air superiority in the Carolinas, bear witness to a modern-day arcade wizard, rank our favorite (and least favorite) shmups in the dump, create our favorite Gundam U.S. president, and celebrate two years of making dumb arcade podcasts.
I say it's a bonus episode but it's a full episode where we talk about shmups in general. We love them!
Time to cover the complete arcade history of Treasure - the game developer that gave us Radiant Silvergun, Ikargua, and… that's it! We explore these two fun SHMUPs that mix the shooter genre with a dash of puzzle mechanics. What mysterious explosion set us up the bomb for a plot device? How is Treasure still open after no new game releases since 2014? Why is Ikaruga so divisive? We also enjoy some cawfee tawk about new shooter genre mashups, an update on Atari tokens, the correlation between Nickelodeon slime and male pattern baldness, and the pizza debate rages on.
We're blasting off on the first episode of our new SHMUP miniseries with the shooter that set the mold for horizontal STGs - Konami's Gradius. How did this accidental hit become such a groundbreaking series? What anime movie had a huge influence on the design and weaponry of the Vic Viper? How many aliases do the Gradius and Salamander games have? Is this the most repeated arcade game of all time? No STG would be complete without some talk about Morning Music, board issues, weapon strategy, and the obvious Friends connection. We also cover cheap Jeopardy questions, proctology exams, tiny snipers, a Lake Placid pinball game, and bad Mark Wahlberg quotes.
There's plenty of Konami classics that never made their way outside of Japan. We could probably do an entire episode like this featuring the Ganbare Goemon series! However, today we'll be focusing our efforts on two shoot ‘em ups (SHMUPS, Shooters, Shmupdangos, whatever you wanna call them!) Falsion, a Famicom Disk System game that took […]
Chiptune artist Jredd, composer of The VGMbassy theme song, guest hosts episode 2!
No topics, just news, and the ramblings that they lead to. Take a listen to the raw thoughts of the TitanCast crew as it pertains to Shenmue HD, the gaming community, and retro gaming as a hole. You never know how deep the rabbit hole goes until you take the leap.
Bullets everywhere, a screen full of sprites, credits running low. That's right it's time for some shoot em ups! Join the TitanCast crew as they discuss their top two shmups for the Sega Saturn, the intricacies of these titles, and some of the nuances of shmup game-play and design. Don't forget to give us a sub and rating if you enjoyed this episode, and check out our past episodes if you're new to the cast.
Blah Blah Does anyone even read this? Biscuits. Two podcasters not wearing underpants talking about playing games standing up in front of wooden boxes with TVs inside them. Buttons. Joystick. Get those reflexes ready, welcome to Bullet-Hell's Kitchen! This week we dig into the soaring, energetic, and often manic tunes of arcade shoot'em-ups! We look at the old and new, horizontal and vertical, and the cute and insane! We also create a shooter based on Pernell, and Rob becomes an old man battling against impossible odds.
As our month of spookiness continues, Heidi Kemps joins us to tackle one of our most bizarre subjects yet: SHMUPs (or shoot-'em-ups, or arcade-style shooting games) that ventured beyond familiar sci-fi trappings to confront something much darker than aliens and enemy fleets. We then touch on Eagle Flight and Return to Arkham, get speculative about Red Dead Redemption 2, mourn the loss of United Front Games, and look at the horror movies you'd like to see get turned into games.
