Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? Is the NG+ mode worth playing? How is Parasite Eve 2 different from the original? In this episode of the Gaming Round Table, we delve deep into the world of Final Fantasy with a special focus on Final Fantasy XIV. Join us as we welcome back guests Cole, Moogan, and Scrag, who bring their unique insights into the current state of the game. We tackle the controversies and frustrations surrounding the Final Fantasy XIV community, questioning whether these represent standard cycles or signal larger issues for the game's future. The conversation also expands to Square Enix's recent announcements about exploring turn-based JRPGs, hinting at a return to their roots. Our guests share their opinions on whether Final Fantasy should bifurcate into separate action and turn-based branches to satisfy diverse player expectations. We also explore the realm of job identity and new features for the anticipated 8.0 expansion. With an unlimited budget as a playful hypothetical, ideas range from revitalizing the sub-job system to creating more complex roles within the game. Our discussion wouldn't be complete without addressing the role of Yoshi P, whose influence on the franchise has been monumental, yet whose workload appears overwhelming. We ask if it's time for him to focus on new projects or even a brand-new Final Fantasy MMO. Tune in to hear these perspectives and more, and stay plugged into the developments that could shape the future of this beloved gaming series!

The global economy is in a tumultuous state, inflation has carved away everyone's purchasing power, and prices are almost universally going up. So naturally, PlayStation will follow suit and jack its rates up too, right? Well, no. Instead, they're doing the exact opposite of what seems natural: For their annual, weeks-long Days of Play sales event, Sony has slashed prices on PS5 and PS5 Pro, PSVR2 and DualSense, and even DualSense Edge and the Access controller. Is Sony's boldness in risking economic erosion worth it? Is its strategy simply to put its boot on Xbox's neck once and for all? We discuss. Plus: If all went according to plan, The Order: 1886 would have gotten two sequels, EA cancels its Black Panther project while shutting down the studio behind it, Build A Rocket Boy suggests there may be a paid, organized campaign against its upcoming title MindsEye, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's success mean for the future of global JRPGs? Could Star Wars Battlefront be revived on the basis of a recent resurgence in popularity? Is Colin ignoring an obvious connection between Souls games and his beloved Castlevania? Long ago, it was prophesized that four heroes would arrive to save the world from the encroaching darkness. It's said these Warriors of Light would repel the forces of darkness and finally bring peace to the world. Don't worry, we're here but instead of saving the world we've decided to use our powers for actual good: To spend the next 5-6 hours talking at you about the entire Final Fantasy series. That's right baby, we're going in chronological order starting with the very first Final Fantasy. From Anima to Zidane, we're here to get you informed and psyched up for the upcoming Final Fantasy Magic the Gathering set, due to release on June 13, 2025. Join Braden, Chris, and Adam as they discuss Hironobu Sakaguchi's The Last Story, including a brief recollection of Project Rainfall and what it was like to talk about JRPGs on the internet approximately 14 years ago. It's not all horror stories though, as they also cover the game's unique approach to combat, its non-unique approach to storytelling, and why basically no one talked about it after release (hint: it's Xenoblade's fault.) Our hosts found a game they actually enjoyed for once, which is good since the next game they're playing is going to be an absolute nightmare. Janina & Essi

This week the boyz are joined by Kasey Clark and Keith Carey for a chat about Growing Up Is Dumb, a music festival thrown by Lauren Records. They give a recap of the bands and also try to explain why this festival was neat. It's hard to explain here, give it a listen. They do an okay job. Plus, we open with a spirited conversation about the modern state of JRPGs and the recently announced “Switch 2”... In this episode, we dive deep into the much anticipated Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. After years of fan hopes, delays, and whispers in the forums, Konami has finally delivered a visually enhanced and carefully restored version of two beloved classics. But is it worth the wait? Join us as we explore the improvements to the graphics, sound, and quality of life features, while also discussing the gameplay's more dated elements. From the game's iconic 108 Stars of Destiny to its emotionally resonant narratives, we'll revisit the epic stories of Suikoden and Suikoden II, while also evaluating some of the missed opportunities in the remaster's execution. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the series, we'll give you the lowdown on whether this remaster does justice to two of the greatest JRPGs of all time.

This week Nathan and Chris are joined by freelance writer Aidan Moher to discuss his upcoming book about Suikoden I and II, a pair of sneakily influential JRPGs from the PS1 era that, yes, are very much worth writing an entire book about. Then we discuss news from the eye of the pre-GDC storm: Next week thousands of game developers will convene in San Francisco to network and exchange knowledge, but a growing number of non-US-based devs are dropping out due to Trump's hostile policies and erratic governance. After that we talk about Sony and Microsoft both introducing new unwanted AI features in the same week. Whose is worse? We'll let you decide. Lastly, we design the one product that should include generative AI: a fucked-up private jet for rich people that definitely works just fine.Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, & special guest Aidan Moher- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. 16 bit JRPGs are a bit of a nostalgia spot for me. I would actually classify it as more of misplaced nostalgia in that I didn't play a lot of them growing up but playing them now makes me feel nostalgic anyway. This week on the show I was lucky enough to get a review copy of a recently released indie game that takes inspiration from the 16 bit JRPG style. I'm joined by Sam AKA Storm Beagle to talk about Beloved Rapture, an RPG made in the style of a 16 bit JRPG. He discuss what this game does to stand out compared to other games of it's kind, how effective it's story is, it's battle mechanics and we also debate if the phrase "You silver haired fuck" is a good line or not. As a small spoiler, this game kinda rules and you should go play it, but if you'd like to hear more about it, give this episode a listen! They share personal anecdotes and insights about various titles, including Donkey Kong 64, Age of Empires, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more. The conversation also touches on the evolution of gaming, the impact of live service games, and the nostalgia associated with classic titles. With humor and camaraderie, they explore what made these games special and how they shaped their gaming experiences. In this engaging conversation, Scott and the host delve into the world of video games, focusing on the legacy of the Final Fantasy series, the grind of JRPGs, and the challenges of adapting video games into TV shows and movies. They explore the potential of various game franchises, including Lost in Random and Treasure Planet, as animated series or live service games, discussing the unique storytelling opportunities these adaptations could provide.
I didn't grow up loving jRPGs. I grew up with point and click adventure games, so let me tell you about one of the greatest adventure game series of all time.
One of the biggest JRPGs of 2024 deserves one of the biggest FNGC episodes of Season 3 and we are here to deliver! This week I'm joined by Same Heaney (of No Limits!) and Dave Jackson (Tales from the Backlog) to conduct a comprehensive analysis of Metaphor Refantazio. A fascinating title that expects much of the player and provides even more in return. We face idealism, nihilism, and a journey of the hero and the self as we travel with the protagonist across the Kingdom of Euchronia. We discover how real world politics have informed the sociopolitical discourse deeply imbedded in this title. I couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you all and, as always, welcome your thoughts on Metaphor. Please follow Sam and Dave at their respective links belowTFTBL (Dave) - https://talesfromthebacklog.fireside.fm/Sam Heaney - https://x.com/SamHeaneyNo Limits - https://open.spotify.com/show/01WEQ8SqpngBgkLLYbniXl?si=82a33b562c334c4bMusic by: Shoji Meguro, Atsushi Kitajoh, Toshiki Konishi, Yuzo Koshiro [ATLUS Sound Team]; Additional Vocals by Keisuke Honryo (Chief of Myojoji Temple), Glory Chorus Tokyo, Tomoya Hangai, Maiko Katagiri & Yoshino Janjo. If you want to reach out to Nick and Will personally to engage with us about the show, follow us on any link here:https://linktr.ee/FridayNightGamecastSupport the show
Kept you waiting, huh? After the Year of Dreams that was 2023, we were told to expect a soft year in gaming. But that was a lie. This year went hard. Fantasy is dead...or is it? This time we cover one of the most critically-acclaimed JRPGs of 2024. Does it live up to the hype? Join us as we discuss incredible narrative twists, anime character tropes, and how we're slowly killing Delaila with these 100+ hour video games.Note: The music track at the start of the episode is “Ode To Heroes”, composed by Shoji Meguro for the Metaphor: ReFantazio Original Soundtrack. Happy New Year and welcome to 2024! A brand new... FUCK. Why does the new year make some of dumber than usual? I don't know but I do know that the Grinders are back. Or at least, they will be. They still have one final episode before they return in 2025. They will be back with more of the insanity of Game Night, the thoughtful conversations of the Driver's Seat, and the fantastical Panic Room. But first, let's flash back... Back to the past. To an ancient time, I like to refer to as 2024. In that distant past the Grinders would start every episode with the latest news. Updates on when those games will join the rest of us in the future. Games like OFF, AI Limit, and Ys vs Trails in the Sky Alternative Sage may have been made in the distant past but will be arriving in 2025. They maybe from a past long forgotten but the Stinkos of history should never be lost. The past is seemingly doomed to repeat itself as Republicans, Democrats, racism, and misogyny never seem to go out of style. Democrats and Republicans worked together to give themselves raises while discriminating against the Trans community. Not to be out done, Disney made sure to spread their own brand of transphobia. Anyone who thinks misogyny and racism are dead, should see how her new (now former) fan base reacts to Caitlin Clark's interview about White Privilege. With the end of 2024 came the final episode of Panic Room. Well, maybe not the final episode but it is the last episode of the year that has long since passed. And it will be a good one, if Break can come up with something before time runs out. In the meantime, the Grinders talk about their favorite games of the year. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom stole many hours of Frank's life, and he has no regrets. Break surprised no one by choosing an RTS. And of course, Eric played a ton of JRPGs but only the best made his year-end list. With that, it's time to go back to the future! (Don't sue me!) The Grinders no not what the future will bring but they know they will keep showing up every month to game, complain, argue, laugh, and have a good time. Even if 2025 is a shit sandwich of never-ending stupidity, the Grinders will be back every month and just as crazy as ever! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! Tits! TITS!
