What are the best RPGs for someone who has never played a JRPG before? Which games teach the foundations of the genre without overwhelming new players? And which games can genuinely turn a casual player into a lifelong fan? We break down why games like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Pokémon Yellow, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Persona 5, Golden Sun, EarthBound, Suikoden II, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy IV remain some of the most approachable and emotionally resonant entry points into the genre. Along the way, we talk about: Why turn-based combat is NOT outdated, the hidden brilliance of abstraction in classic JRPG design, why Pokémon “hacks into the childhood psyche”, how JRPGs teach players complex systems intuitively, why nostalgia is actually a good thing, and the games we'd introduce to our own children. Whether you're trying to introduce a friend, spouse, or child to JRPGs for the first time, or you're just reflecting on the games that shaped you, this was one of our favorite conversations in a long time. #JRPG #ChronoTrigger #FinalFantasy #Pokemon #Persona5 #EarthBound #Suikoden #GoldenSun #Nintendo #RetroGaming #VideoGames #ResonantArc Time Codes: 1. Com João Varella, Alexandre Sato, Thomas Kehl, Marcos Kiyoto, João R e Marina AndreoliDois Analógicos - Listen on Spotify - Linktree

In Episode 130, Spencer and I settle into a long, thoughtful conversation about Dragon Quest VII, why comfort and tradition still matter in JRPGs, and how remakes should evolve without losing their identity. From there, we talk candidly about indie coverage, media burnout, Square Enix's struggles with smaller games, and how traffic incentives quietly shape what gets covered. It's a loose, reflective episode about taste, responsibility, and loving games for the right reasons.

Hello Adventurers! Wait, is that how it goes for this? Does it even matter? Who knows! So this episode, theoretically a "bonus" episode, is actually a product of two years worth of work. In 2024, over the course of two different panels at MomoCon and KamiCon HAI (RIP), we had panels where we attempted to rank all the mainline Final Fantasies (plus two bonus games). As we had different people on each panel, we of course had two different rankings!  What was a podcast to do? Well, all six of us got together to record One Final (Fantasy) Podcast to determine the final ranking. This is that episode! PS You may notice that we have not indicated if this is an OSMcast! or a Carbuncle Chronicle episode. That's because it's both! Almost all of the OSMcast! side, and all of The Carbuncle Chronicle side are in this, AND it covers Final Fantasy XIV to boot, so it made sense to just call it an episode for both.  OSMnotesWhoo boy! This was a real pain to edit! But Basil also got real extra with the audio and music for the episode this time, so we hope you enjoy the half a year he took at poking and prodding this thing into Listenable Audio™. This week on Critical Arcade, Nick and Dave dust off their swords, shine their armor, and set out on a nostalgic journey through the land of Alefgard in “Dragon Quest I & II Remake.” Square Enix has taken two of the most important JRPGs ever made and given them the full HD-2D treatment—complete with shimmering pixel art, dynamic lighting, and a soundtrack that will make even the slimes tear up a little. In Dragon Quest I, our brave hosts take on the role of the legendary descendant of Erdrick, tasked with defeating the evil Dragonlord and restoring peace to a world teetering on the edge of ruin. Along the way, they'll explore charming towns, uncover ancient secrets, and save a princess who's just a little too comfortable being kidnapped. Then, as the story seamlessly continues into Dragon Quest II, the stakes—and the party size—grow. Joined by three royal companions, the adventure expands across continents, oceans, and a world haunted by the legacy of the first hero. Monsters get tougher, castles get grander, and Dave's inventory management skills are tested like never before. Meanwhile, Nick can't stop humming the battle theme and pretending he's composing a full orchestra.Together, they'll uncover how these two stories intertwine, setting the foundation for decades of RPG storytelling. Will Dave survive the grind without rage-quitting? Will Nick finally admit that “random encounters” are not a personal attack? Tune in as they laugh, strategize, and occasionally cry their way through one of gaming's most legendary remakes—where every slime defeated brings them one step closer to destiny. Hosted on Acast. In today's Daily Fix:Microsoft is saying the controversial price of the ROG Xbox Ally X wasn't set by them, but rather hardware maker ASUS. The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are $599 and $999 respectively, and feature Xbox-themed UI and connect to the users' Xbox accounts, but are technically ASUS products under the ROG brand. Despite the price, Microsoft claims the devices have sold out on the Xbox store and other retailers, and the critical response has been overall positive, despite the steep price. In other news, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's co-director is saying that the game's combat system is not yet decided, despite calls for the series to return to turn-based roots. This comes after the surprise success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which features many game mechanics popularized by JRPGs like classic FF titles. And finally, a leak about more Resident Evil remakes may prove to be real, with reports saying Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica are next on Capcom's to-do list.

I recently played the Pixel Remaster version for the first time, so I wanted to give Cecil and friends another round of RTG.I don't disagree with anyone that says Final Fantasy VI is the superior game, but IV isn't without its charm. I love the characters, betrayals, and combat system, and personally I like the linear party management of this one better to future entries where you can mix and match as you please. It's really wild to see how far JRPGs have come since Golbez's started robbing jewelry stores, and I think FF IV deserves its flowers for helping the series evolve from its basic NES counterparts.Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week and we both geeked out pretty hard over this game. A couple dungeons (Dark Elf) and characters (Spoony Bard) got under our skin, but at the end of the day I think we agree that this is a must-play for fans of the genre, and a great place for someone new to Final Fantasy to get their feet wet. And before we argue with Tellah, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what the next big trend in gaming is going to be? What Mario moment blew my mind the most as a kid? And where doI stand on silent protagonists in games?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Final Fantasy legends: Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy X.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The global economy is in a tumultuous state, inflation has carved away everyone's purchasing power, and prices are almost universally going up. So naturally, PlayStation will follow suit and jack its rates up too, right? Well, no. Instead, they're doing the exact opposite of what seems natural: For their annual, weeks-long Days of Play sales event, Sony has slashed prices on PS5 and PS5 Pro, PSVR2 and DualSense, and even DualSense Edge and the Access controller. Is Sony's boldness in risking economic erosion worth it? Is its strategy simply to put its boot on Xbox's neck once and for all? We discuss. Plus: If all went according to plan, The Order: 1886 would have gotten two sequels, EA cancels its Black Panther project while shutting down the studio behind it, Build A Rocket Boy suggests there may be a paid, organized campaign against its upcoming title MindsEye, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's success mean for the future of global JRPGs? Could Star Wars Battlefront be revived on the basis of a recent resurgence in popularity? Is Colin ignoring an obvious connection between Souls games and his beloved Castlevania?
