What is a Shoot Em' Up? Defining the Genre with Shmup Junkie. This video has literally been years in the making. As much as we all the love Shoot Em' Up (shmup, STG) genre, what's embarrassing is that, up to this point, over all these decades, there has never been a solid criteria or definition of what a shmup even is. For a genre that is so fundamental you'd think this would have been established by now, but due to the nature of online discourse, this question has never been resolved. Over the years, I have worked on what I think are the 3 criteria of what I believe consitute a shmup, and in today's video I explain these criteria and run them by fellow youtuber, Shmup Junkie, to hear his reaction and thoughts. We not only talk about shmups, but also related genres like run n' gun, rail shooter, gallery shooter, first person shooter (fps), third person shooter, single screen games, metal slug, contra, platformers, twin stick shooters, Star Fox, Doom, and many more! I think we have a fantastic discussion and I do think this is one of the most important episode of The Electric Underground :-) I am now going to list off some algorthym tags: Nintendo Switch, Steam, Bullet Hell, PS4. PS5, Xbox, PC, Indie, Hidden Gem, Sega, CAVE, Touhou, Battle Garegga, Longplay, 1cc, Podcast.

The shmup, which used to be simply known as a shooter, is one of the oldest genres in gaming. The genre was permanently established when Taito's Space Invaders rocked arcades in Japan, establishing a legacy that would carry on throughout the entirety of video game history. @Hoptimus (RFC) of the Retro Futurist Podcast joins @GameAgentET (OGiH) and The Six Button Samurai for a wild and woolly trip through the shmup's evolution during the 8/16/32-bit age, stopping to pay respects to a vast galaxy of personal favorites such as Lifeforce, Blazing Lazers, Thunder Force, MUSHA, Radiant Silvergun, Darius Gaiden, Battle Garegga, and a few dark horse suggestions you may not have heard of. This week's episode is a unique one because it is a follow up interview. Eaglet, today's guest, was actually the 2nd person I ever interviewed for the podcast. However, during that first interview, I was not aware of his achievements in Battle Garegga, and did not learn about them till halfway through the interview. So, once the first interview was finished, I decided that I was going to do my homework and ask Eaglet back for an encore performance, which he kindly agreed to do. I think this episode turned out really well and I highly encourage everyone out there to give it a listen. Also, the awesome cover of Fly to the Leaden Sky featured in the episode was done by Eaglet himself.

Today Arnaldo and Paul are joined by Youtuber, Shmup Junkie, to talk about our favourite shmup video game developer, Compile! Our first experiences with Compile games are up next (36:00) followed by talking about Compile's early efforts Zanac and The Guardian Legend (43:30). We cover Compile's bread and butter, Aleste, in detail (1:10:00) followed by fan favourites Blazing Lazers and Spriggan (1:41:30) and wrap things up with Compile's end as a shmup developer (2:03:00). Speculative futuristic war. Speculative futuristic war never changes. Welcome to "Battle" week, in which Video Game Grooves brings the fight to you with a couple of fighty soundtracks that sound nothing alike but share at least one thing in common: circularity. Meaning vinyl. Yes it's too clever, let's move on. This week we are joined by Jacob Chase of the VGM WAX blog, which recently celebrated its first anniversary covering a more literate form of video game music on vinyl record. We recommend you swing by and check it out! Jacob and Jeremy focus on the dynamic musical score for Battletech, the Harebrained Schemes strategy game based on the iconic tabletop franchise. The unorthodox-but-appropriate musical stylings of Jon Everist underscore the futuristic-yet-feudal storylines while still capturing the flavor of giant stompy 'mechs shooting each other on far-flung worlds, and we highlight a couple of selections to illustrate that. Anthony is excited about Battle Garegga, from Limited Run Games. This vertical shooter lies at an interesting nexus point for the arcade shooter genre, and the complex musical layers of its soundtrack are a great late-era jam. Then we put Jacob in the hot seat to talk about the story behind VGM WAX, and we have a good old discussion about the process of "coverage" of video game music on record. How do we approach it, what drives us in our respective media, and what is it that we hope to share and give to others? So come listen and be shared with and given to.
In the summer of 2019, four friends set out on an expedition they'd never forget -- a journey of laughter, friendship, love, and growing up. This is the voyage of the Detroit Arcade Club. Their continuing mission: to explore strange arcades, to seek out old games and rekindle old friendships... to boldly crave where no man has craved before.Join Logan, Greg, and Chris as they venture westward to reunite with both Dodontommy and the elusive Shartbites, becoming a force so powerful that they collectively lay waste to the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois.Theme song by SNESEI: https://snesei.bandcamp.comAll music, snippets, and samples are properties of their respective copyright holders.
Arnaldo, Ozzy and Paul chat about what video games they've been playing lately, starting with Arnie living life one turn at a time with Ring of Red, Sakura Wars 5, and Summon Night 6 (10:30). Ozzy starts the next segment with a discussion about the Xbox One X and why he chose to play Devil May Cry 5 on it, and why he might choose to play other video games on it as well. (51:00) The guys then get into a detailed discussion on Shmups including which ones they've played and would recommend, and their takes on controversial Shmup pioneer, Battle Garegga (1:17:00). Paul wraps things up with a love letter to Etrian Odyssey Nexus and a brief opinion on Astro Bot: Rescue Mission for PSVR.
