It is a solo this week with Rick out and a short one on top of it. Jack starts off with a focus on how different versions change the experience if you watch the English or Japanese versions. He breaks down the name swaps between Japanese and international releases, and he also points out major edits like censorship cuts and trimmed scenes, and compares how soundtrack and dialogue changes can completely shift the tone depending on which cut you watch. He also talks about how the movie feels more like a fan focused showcase where lots of characters pop in briefly, why the game style fight moments are the most fun part, and how the whole thing hit him as a nostalgic easy watch that made him want to pick up Street Fighter II again.About the anime:This movie straight up takes the Street Fighter II roster and builds a globe-hopping action story around them. Vega ( or M. Bison for the dub fans) is running Shadaloo (or Shadowlaw) and basically hunting down the world's strongest fighters so he can control or recruit them to help him with is goals, and Ryu sitting at the center of the target because of his pure raw potential. While Ryu's out doing his lone-wolf “I'm just here to get stronger” thing, Chun-Li and Guile are pushing the investigation and military side of the plot, trying to shut Shadaloo down before Vega can do any more damage. The movie's big focus is pretty straight forward, the fight scenes are well executed even if some of them pay homage to the game itself in a fun way and that “that character gets a moment” energy, more than deep mystery plotting.Next Week's Pick: “A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof”Have you had the chance to watch Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie or any of our previous selections? This week we hop on a plane (Street Fighter II style....vrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooom "JAPAN!") and land on the highways of Tokyo where we'll be talking about one of the most infamous street racing crews of all time, THE MID NIGHT CLUB. This elite group of car builders, mechanics, technicians, and wealthy F**cks created a secret group that tuned japanese (and some Porsches too) into monsters that went over 200 miles per hour and could double the speed of any police cruiser chasing them. They lived by a strict code of honor and safety until one day tragedy struck and the group (in)formally disbanded....or did they? The conversation concluded with plans to discuss Brian's recent painting projects in a future segment. He detailed the specific paint and gear changes he made to each figure, emphasizing the challenges of working with different materials. Brian also discussed his excitement about the upcoming release of LJN wrestling figures, including Wave 3, which will make popular figures more accessible to fans at a lower price point. LJN Figure Release Discussion The group discussed the upcoming release of new LJN figures from Mattel, with Brian sharing his excitement about the affordable price point and potential for detailed customization. They compared the new figures to original LJN and Big Rubber Guy versions, noting differences in materials and scale. Brian expressed hope for future releases, including a Mr. T figure and a more menacing Adrian Adonis redesign. Scott suggested adding characters from 80s wrestling teams like the Young Stallions and Boris Zukov to fill collection gaps. Wrestling Action Figures Collectibles Discussion The group discussed various wrestling action figures and collectibles, including Latoonie figures, Road Warriors, and Ringside Collectibles pre-orders. Scott shared his wishlist items, including the Dudley's Ultimate 2-pack and a John Cena figure from the vault. Brian showed off some Jesse and Bundy figures he had collected, which impressed the others. They also mentioned a limited-time offer for Dory Funk Jr. figures at KWK, and briefly touched on a new Matt Cardona vs. Chris Jericho 2-pack from Jazzwares Vault. They also talked about Super7 closing two stores at the end of the year due to financial challenges, possibly related to tariffs. The conversation concluded with a discussion about a new Road Warrior Animal figure from Latoonie, which has a limited run of 100 units with distinctive Batman-inspired face paint. Macho Man Wrestling Figure Plans The group discussed upcoming Mattel wrestling figures, focusing on potential Macho Man Randy Savage releases. They agreed that Macho Man's return would likely be announced around Christmas, with various looks being considered including his LJN, WrestleMania III, and neon green attire. Brian expressed a preference for a WrestleMania III-inspired figure with white tights and detailed boot stars, while Scott noted that Macho Man would slot into multiple lines including Ultimate Edition. The discussion also touched on New Jack's upcoming figure and the possibility of future releases based on video game appearances. They also talked about their personal collecting habits and preferences. The conversation concluded with a brief mention of a wrestling video game. Nostalgic Arcade Wrestling Games Scott and Jefry discussed their favorite arcade wrestling games, with Scott expressing a fondness for WrestleFest due to its nostalgic value and the nostalgia of playing it with friends, despite holding a grudge against it for consuming his childhood money. They compared WrestleFest to its predecessor, WWF Superstars, noting the improved graphics and sound in WrestleFest. They also discussed the release of a modern iOS remake of WrestleFest, which Scott found disappointing. Brian shared his limited experience with both games, noting that neither held the same nostalgic value for him as they did for Scott and Jefry. Arcade Game Nostalgia Discussion The group discussed arcade games from their youth, with Brian, Scott, and Jefry sharing memories of playing NES Pro Wrestling, WrestleMania, and Spy Hunter. On this week's episode, Gita and Luke are joined by Matt Leone, formerly of Polygon and now of Design Room, a site dedicated to sharing the oral histories behind some of the biggest and most important video games of all time. We chat about Matt's work detailing the stories behind the creation of games like Street Fighter II and Shadow Of The Colossus, how he managed to find the time and space to get that work done while at a commercial site like Polygon, and how his works, created as acts of journalism, are also becoming works of history as well. We then move onto chatting about Town To City, a relaxing city-builder that Gita and Luke simply cannot stop playing, before pondering what our favourite 5/10 video games are.Credits- Hosts: Gita Jackson, Luke Plunkett, & special guest Matt Leone- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Since our conversation of Street Fighter 2 the animated movie has been on my mind. Here is how you adapt a fighting game to a movie and make it something awesome, unlike the live action film. It takes time to make all the characters shine and each one is given their moment. Come hear how we felt about this animated film that pulled off the hardcore action we all wanted. Join Justin as he sits down with prolific artist Lee MacLeod to discuss his Nintendo Power days, the grind of film poster work, painting iconic covers for Full Moon Features, legendary video game art, and more!Lee MacLeod bio:“Lee MacLeod is a prolific artist whose work defined a generation of gamers and horror fans alike. Best known for his striking cover paintings for Nintendo Power magazine during its golden era, Lee brought games like Final Fantasy, Street Fighter II, and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse to life with vivid, cinematic artwork that captured the imaginations of countless readers. Beyond the gaming sphere, Lee's art graced VHS covers for cult classics such as Subspecies and Puppet Master, helping to shape the visual language of ‘80s and ‘90s horror.A graduate of Art Center College of Design, Lee has enjoyed a diverse career spanning illustration, concept art, and fine art landscapes, bringing the same vibrant energy and storytelling to his oil paintings of the American West as he once did to monster-filled gaming worlds. Whether crafting the heroic poses of pixelated warriors or capturing the haunting beauty of New Mexico skies, Lee MacLeod's work is a testament to the enduring power of imagination, color, and composition.”Intro and outro theme created by Wyrm. For the latest installment of "Fighting VideoLAMES," we're looking at Capcom's second attempt to bring their beloved Street Fighter II to the big screen. Far from the silly, colorful spectacle of the JCVD/Raul Julia version, this time around Capcom opted for a more grounded, dramatic take, focusing primarily one single Street Fighter character in hopes of kicking off an MCU-like string of sequels ultimately culminating in a big team-up movie. But even with Kristen Kreuk, a hot TV star of the time, in the titular role as one of the video game's most popular characters, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li once again failed to cement Street Fighter as a cinematic brand. So what went wrong this time? How much can you change from the source material before you're no longer really making a true adaptation? And just what is going on with that Chris Klein performance? We discuss all this, and more! Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

Come join us as we discuss the first fully animated film in the Street Fighter franchise! A complicated film with multiple versions and releases, we get into the nitty gritty details, discussing the multiple soundtracks, English dubbings, forgotten plot points, and ... other stuff. The only thing missing is Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia!
We're kicking off "Fighting VideoLAMES," a four-episode series covering cinematic adaptions of fighting video-games, with the first of two movies based on one of the most iconic, popular fighting games of all time: 1994's Street Fighter. With an all-star cast including Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia (in his final onscreen appearance), produced by the very company that made the video game, and released while Street Fighter II mania was at a high, the movie seemed like a can't-miss proposition. And, to be fair, the movie was a financial success. But between an extra chaotic production and fan dissatisfaction over liberties taken with the story and characters of the game, the movie still quickly took on the reputation of an infamous cinematic disaster. The question is, is the movie truly an unwatchable mess, or is it actually the enjoyable camp classic its growing cult of fans and defenders over the years claim it to be? Episode 499: The Summit crew enter the Street Fighter tournament and get their asses kicked. So instead they did a review of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie to size up their competition for next year!
In 1994 the Street Fighter name was riding high off the back of Street Fighter II, an arcade classic. This meant it was the perfect time to release a movie adaptation and who better to play the role of Guile than Jean-Claude Van Damme at the height of his fame. Much maligned at the time it's become somewhat of a cult classic despite being more GI Joe than Street Fighter. But at least some of the actors look like some of the video game characters. Plus it has Australia's own Kylie Minogue and an incredible performance from Raul Julia. Want a shout out on the show? Shoot us a text and share your thoughts, game suggestions, etc.!Lou and I are taking a trip back 16 years to one of the most anticipated sequels of all time—Street Fighter IV! After years of experimentation, Capcom brought the series back to its roots, combining the best of Street Fighter II and III into what many consider the greatest Street Fighter game ever made.We break down what made SFIV such a hit, including the return classic 2D gameplay, PLUS the introduction of new mechanics like Focus Attacks and Ultra Combos. And we talk about the roster— thankfully SFIV brought back almost ALL of the fan favorites from SFII, but not only that -- Capcom also spiced things up with characters from its own gaming past, like Abel, Rufus, Cody and Poison. Was Street Fighter IV the ultimate revival, or did it still leave something to be desired? Kick back and enjoy the episode as we share our thoughts!Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)
Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (Guile) and Raul Julia (M. Bison), this 1994 cult classic was not received fondly upon initial release. Based on the Street Fighter II video games, this G. I. Joe-inspired take on the franchise removes the pesky street fighting and special powers from the characters. The movie is not all bad, however! JCVD and Julia provide excellent performances (considering the material they are given), and the film has lots of memorable dialogue. If only they hadn't completely dropped the ball with Ryu and Ken...

Sega released Eternal Champions in hopes of capitalizing on the fighting game mania that the game industry was in the midst of following the massive success of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. The game tried to set itself apart with unique features such as a heavier emphasis on its story, characters pulled from different time periods, reflectable projectiles, force fields, fighters that carried weapons, a training mode where players had to defend themselves against robotic traps, a novel method of executing moves, and elaborate stage-specific finishing moves called "Overkills". Episodes like this are what make all the effort of bringing you the AKAPAD Film Buff Podcast worthwhile. It's when Peter sees the light and shares thoughts that are both counter-culture and deeply insightful. The 1995 Street Fighter II animated series from USA Network stands as the greatest single story to unite these beloved characters into a cohesive arc with a clear and engaging narrative.
Finally, we have our first traditional fighting game! Lich Vu had a mouth on him. The problem was his mouth was 70 years old. A tiny Asian man with bone cancer, Vu was willing to go jail rather than sign a citation for a traffic violation in October. So often habitual criminals choose to decide their fate at the time of arrest through flight and resistance. In Vu's case, he touched the officer. Instead of picking up another charge, like say, simple assault on an LEO, the officer pick Vu up, flipped him over and put him down on the ground like a hyper combo from Street Fighter II. Vu lost consciousness and was admitted to the hospital with brain bleeding, and a neck injur that prevents him from eating, drinking and taking medication orally. The officer is on paid administrative leave but the outlook on his future isn't bright. Will this be another huge setback for police? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Remember the classic arcade game Street Fighter II? Wasn't it great? The characters and combat felt so unique and cool? Well too bad, because this movie uppercuts all that in the face. In fact, it's so distinctly bad it's achieved cult status for being an accidental masterpiece of "trash art." So get your blue camouflage dry cleaned, wrap up your cage fights with Vega, and lace up a pair of superconducting boots to watch the 1994 dumpster fire that is Street Fighter: The Movie. Here's a link to the story of making Street Fighter that was referenced in the episode. Have thoughts/comments/suggestions for us?
