Frenetic crowds are storming the White House like a Black Friday mob at Walmart!Only these are not shoppers scrambling for family needs – these are CEOs, lobbyists, and billionaires out to “get theirs” in the huge Trump-a-Thon sell-off of Presidential favors. Common folks need not apply, since MAGA, Inc. (Trump's political fundraising sack) charges a million bucks or more just to buy access to his golden throne.Once there, everything is for sale. One cryptocurrency huckster, for example, delivered his million to get into a candlelight dinner at Mar-a-Lago, where he pitched a business deal to Trump himself. Then, for an extra $200,000, the crypto-guy was allowed to “sponsor” the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn. Yes – they've even financialized and corporatized an apolitical, publicly-funded event for children!Not only is Trump being bought by Big Money, but he's also available for short-term lease. For example, rich businesswoman Elizabeth Fago leased him in April for some heavy lifting on a household chore. Her son Paul had been found guilty last year of tax crimes and was headed to prison. But a million dollar check to MAGA Inc. put her in direct touch with Mister Fix-It. Sure enough, once her check was cashed, the fortunate son was granted “a full and unconditional” presidential pardon – no jail time, no payment of restitution to his victims.When the New York Times asked about such corrupt selling of official favors, MAGA Inc. declared that Trump treats every American the same. Film journalist and friend of the show Brandon Streussnig returns to discuss Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave, a British riff on the 90s neo-noir template, self-described by Boyle and his collaborators as their take on the Coen's Blood Simple. The film chronicles a trifecta of beautiful, sociopathic yuppies sharing an Edinburgh flat (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor) who unravel after the untimely death of their new roommate and the discovery of a suitcase full of cash. Frenetic, aesthetically bold, and brimming with terrific performances from its cast of newcomers, Shallow Grave stood in stark opposition to the more muted social realism of established British filmmakers of the era like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and showcased the collaborative power of Boyle, McGregor, screenwriter John Hodge, and producer Andrew Macdonald only a handful of years removed from their landmark feature, Trainspotting.We discuss Boyle's aesthetic inclinations, his history in the theater, and how the cinematic medium can liberate a particular type of artist from the confines of the stage. Then, we unpack the film's stellar trio of performances, its economy of character, and especially McGregor's star-making turn that suggests the greatness he would achieve with Boyle in their next several collaborations. Previously we revisited Idlewild's 2000 breakthrough sophomore album 100 Broken Windows, but for this episode we're going backward to their 1998 debut. The punkier, more aggressive Hope Is Important leans into noisy, almost unpolished intensity, while moments of introspection hint at the more refined songwriting the band would develop on following albums. We don't think of many bands coming out of the UK in the early nineties that could fit nicely on a bill with The Jesus Lizard or Mudhoney, but the 1991 album Tantrum by UK band Milk makes the case that noise rock wasn't just an American phenomenon coming out of hardcore. Frenetic rhythms and dissonant guitars shine on the record, covering for a solid but unremarkable vocal performance. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 18, 2023. A new superhero movie called “Blue Beetle,” featuring a mostly Latin American cast and a fresh feeling (for the most part) that really emphasizes family, is the latest offering for DC superhero fans. “Strays” is a VERY R-rated talking dog comedy with Will Ferrell & Jamie Foxx that mixes bodily function jokes way too liberally for my taste into a pretty sweet story with cute dogs. Netflix's “The Monkey King” is an animated family movie that is enjoyable if not a bit frenetic. The Sundance movie “Landscape with Invisible Hand” is not nearly as rom-com-ish as the trailer would make it seem. While Hulu's “Miguel Wants to Fight” is a comedy about a nice kid who wants to get into a fight before he moves away from his friends, that while fun, the adult language can be a bit of a downer. Amazon's studio has similar problems with “Puppy Love” starring Grant (The Flash) Gustin and Lucy (Pretty Little Liars) Hale. While the new Amazon series  “Harlan Coben's Shelter” is a young adult mystery for people with patience.  Two much more family-friendly choices: Apple's “Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie” finally lets us get to know Peppermint Patty's bespectacled friend better, and the filmed-in-Utah “Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out.”  Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy.
