We are following him. His example, his testimony, his life, they persecuted him. And Jesus says they will persecute you. The violent systems of the world that require a scapegoat. Systems that objectify the other with violent intent, Jesus has exposed. He's overturned these systems, these principalities and powers of darkness that we find everywhere in our world, in our politics, in our religion, throughout all of human society, there it is. Jesus comes in overthrows the kingdoms of darkness and demonstrates God's kingdom of love, and offers his way instead, a way of peace and freedom. The advocate the Holy Spirit, will come and instruct us in His ways, and will continue to testify to our own heart. The truth of the way of love, the way of forgiveness, the way of peace Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

Isaiah has a vision. It's God's dream for the world. His dream is that his house will be filled with people, people from all over the world and that peace will reign on the earth. That humanity will come to learn to walk with God, the God of Jacob, and that there will be no more war. The Prince of Peace will reign and we will be his people. That's God's dream. JOHN wants you to see his wounds. Jesus is taking his wounds with him into eternity. It appears, perhaps wounds that we suffer or carry here in this life, that are offered on behalf of others, because of love, perhaps these wounds will follow us into eternity. For they are the marks of love. Sometimes we look at our wounds and our disabilities in this life. And we can discount them as something we are ashamed of or embarrassed by. At times, I'm concerned for our disabled brothers and sisters and the way that we speak about disabilities as if they are simply something that we want to have fixed or done away with. But here Jesus is showing us something different. Something that is much more redemptive and amazing. He's showing us his wounds after the resurrection. He's carrying them with him still, because they were offered in love and for the service of love to the whole world. Perhaps our wounds, our disabilities are the very things that God will and can redemptively us in the service of love for others so that others might be healed, and know that they too are loved just the way they are. JOHN says this as he spoke, he showed them his wounds in his hands inside. And they were filled with joy when they saw the Lord Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

You have been made a part of the body. You've been included. God has created you to have a part to play. You were born into this new creation, not by your own effort and design. But your part has come from the good and generous heart of God, the Creator of all things is made you just the way you are. And he's placed you right where you need to be. Recognize and rest in who you are. And then do what he's asked you to do. Amen. Joel has a vision. All things are being restored war and violence are being vanquished. God is renewing his land and the creatures of the land. Don't be afraid Joel proclaims, God's going to restore what was lost. And the culmination of God's miracle of restoration is the renewal of all things. The restoration and renewal of humanity. In verse 28, Joel says this, then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. This is not just Joel's vision and dream it is God's vision and dream. God's dream was made real through the obedience of his Son. We read about it in Acts 3 "For, he must remain in heaven until the time for the final restoration of all things, as God promised long ago, through His holy prophets. Joel saw this day, when the Son of God would fulfill the dream that is shared between the Father and the Son, and the Spirit, a dream that will one day be fulfilled when God fills all things with himself. You have been included in God's dream, and the renewing, restoring Spirit of God has been poured out on you too. See today what Joel saw. Understand, the Spirit of God has been poured out on you. Today on this Pentecost Sunday, we are reminded that our God is a consuming fire. And that fire is not the fire of judgment. It's the fire of restoration and purification, the fire that has come to rest on all of his people. Jesus said, everyone will be salted with fire. in God's presence with us, purifies us. Christ has united us to himself, by means of his death on the cross. And now the purifying, restoring, healing presence of God rests upon you. We can't do it on our own. Because we are spiritually dead. We need a champion for this cause someone who will fulfill righteousness for us. The law points to this, we need someone who will do something about our spiritual darkness. And the need goes even deeper, we need someone who will do something about death and the grave. The gospel is, this that Jesus has come as our champion to deal with sin, death and the grave for all. He's come to sit with humanity in our unrighteousness, not to condemn us, but to suffer alongside of us and to die on our behalf. And in dying, he defeats death, freeing us from its penalty and grip. This is what Hebrews 2:14- 15 says, since therefore the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things. So that through death, he might destroy the one who has the power of death. That is the devil. And for those who all their lives were held in slavery, by fear of death. All that was needed for us to overcome sin death, the grave has been done in Christ. He alone is the one who has fulfilled the laws purpose. In doing this, he fulfilled all righteousness on behalf of all. Much more than that, He has defeated the evil one. He has defeated death. And he has drawn us into His victory and his life. Ours is to say yes, to wake up to this new reality that is here now. In Christ. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

Paul sees Christ as undoing all that was done in Adam. What Adam did lead to death and division. What Christ has done, leads to life and union with God. In chapter 5 of Romans, Paul says this. Adam is a symbol of representation of Christ, who is yet to come. But there's a great difference between Adam's sin and God's gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam brought death to many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and His gift of forgiveness to many, through the other man, Jesus Christ. And the result of God's gracious gift is very different from the result of the one man's sin. For Adam's sin led to condemnation, but God's free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. For the sin of this one man, Adam caused death to rule over many, but even greater is God's wonderful grace and His gift of righteousness for all who receive it, we live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. Yes, Adams. One sin brings condemnation to everyone. But Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. That's Romans 5:12- 18. Christ has undone, what Adam has done. And the news is really good. Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

But I will see you again, then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. This is what Jesus told his disciples, you have been given something that cannot be taken away. Jesus is going to the cross. And there he is drawing amen to himself. In john 12, Jesus says, When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself. And in First Corinthians 1522, Paul says, For as in Adam, all die, so in Christ all will be made alive in Christ's death, resurrection and ascension. Jesus has made you one with God, you have been included in the tribal life of God in there, you will share their joy. This is God's gift to you. He has done this and no one can rob you of this. Jesus said, this is the truth of your being. The disciples don't understand this yet. But there's coming a day when they will. Sadly, many of us today still don't understand what Jesus has done for them. We fail to see the new reality, the new relationship that we've entered into with God, Jesus points to the intimacy and the embrace that is now ours. He says, You will ask the Father directly in my name, and he will grant you your request. May we understand? And may we see what the disciples eventually did see the truth of who they had become children of God and that is what you are, and what you now have is his joy and no one can take it from you. This is not a sign of God's retribution. His fire is a place of restoration. His eyes are like fire, John says. And yet we are invited to look into his eyes to look into his face and live. We often stop at the resurrection. But that's not where the Bible stops. It moves on to the ascension to Jesus being raised up to heaven, where he is seated, with his father above all rulers and powers and authorities. As the ascension is often overlooked, another important detail of the Gospel story is also overlooked. It is that Jesus ascended as a human being. Jesus is in heaven right now. Forever one with us, as a resurrected human being. God's identification with us is so complete, that in his love, he will forever be one with us. This does not mean that he has ceased to be fully God, for he forever is fully God. But it also recognizes that he is forever as, fully man. The miracle in the mystery of the Incarnation continues on God becoming one with us. God has found a way into our life into our darkness, and he has dragged us into his life and into his light, making us one with Him forever. Today we celebrate our union with God in Christ and the life we share with him forevermore. And we wait with expectant hope and with courage for his return, praying that he will make all things on Earth as they are in heaven. He says, so here in verse 4, we know dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you, and has chosen you to be his own people. Now, it was no small thing for Paul to say such things. For Paul to have such an opinion of these people, for Paul to look at Gentile people who were different from him, people who had not kept kosher, people who had not adhere to Jewish laws and customs. Paul would have grown up thinking these people were not loved. They were not chosen. So for him to be convinced otherwise now, was a huge thing. It was evidence of something really big happening in Paul's mind and heart. It was evidence of Paul having encountered Jesus. That's what Jesus will do. He will change how you see others. You'll begin to see others, those outside of your community the way God sees them. He sees them as loved, and chosen. meet Jesus. And you'll see that too. Any theology that is void of an encounter with Jesus will fail to see this. Most often, it'll instead begin to suffocate this amazing news to the point where it only applies to those people that are like me or, like us, my race, my politics, my theological persuasion. But when we encountered Jesus, you like Paul, will have a radical revolution in your mind and heart. You'll start seeing and proclaiming this news to everyone, not just your own people. Paul describes this in verse 8, where he says, and now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere, even beyond Macedonia, and these people were also having an encounter with Jesus. And the results were the same. Now, people everywhere were awakening to the reality that they too, are loved. They too are chosen of God. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will encounter the one who changes the way you see the way you think. So that the parameters of God's love in my own heart will extend to the world. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the period that I have for you. David says this in verse 6 of this psalm, that I, the Lord have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. He's speaking of God's Anointed One, the one who will take us by the hand and guard us, the one who will be the light to the nation's, the one that will open eyes of the blind and set the captives free. This was the lesson from Peter's vision. A human being just like you, Peter saw himself as a different kind of human. His tribal identity, and his compliance to religious laws made him distinct and different from other humans, so he thought. These other human beings were not like him. They were different, but not in a good way. They were outside, not inside. They were rejected, not accepted, they were unclean. But the gospel is beginning to come together in Peter's mind. Sometimes it takes time. But now is Peter's time, to let go of his former way of thinking, and to embrace a new reality of what God has done in Christ for all. That through Christ's life, his death and resurrection, God has made humanity clean. Three times the voice from heaven declares, don't call unclean what God has made clean. God has done it. And this revelation gave Peter a new way of seeing himself in relationship to others. We see this in his words to Cornelius, I am a human being just like you. He is a human being not separate and distinct, not in while others are out, but simply a human being that God has made clean with all the other human beings. And this is summed up in his statement at the very end of this story. When Peter says, I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. May the gospel begin to come together in our own minds as it did for Peter? And may we see this revelation of what God has done in Christ? He has made clean those things we thought were once unclean. He is a God who shows no favoritism. He is the God of all. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for you. "The Spirit is poured out on us from heaven, then the wilderness will become a fertile field. And the fertile field will yield bountiful crops. Justice will rule in the wilderness and righteousness in the fertile field. And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever. Victory doesn't come by slugging it out with the flesh and hoping for a better result. Paul says that these two forces are constantly fighting each other. And the result is always the same. We are not able to carry out our good intentions. fighting in the flesh is not the answer. walking in the Spirit is. when we are walking in the Spirit, we are awakened to the completed work of Christ, and our new identity in Christ as God's children. The spirit always points us to the victory that is already ours in Christ, and who we have become in him. Verse 24, Paul says, "those who belong to Christ Jesus, have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross, and crucified them there." You belong to Christ, you are his and you have been crucified with Christ Jesus. Not only were you crucified with Him, you were also raised to new life with him. in 1st Corinthians, Paul says, "For all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ." Paul is saying, wake up to what God has done, and to what you have become, you have been joined together in Christ. Now, by the power of the Spirit, you're able to walk in the Spirit, no longer fulfilling the desires of the flesh, able to live out the victory that is yours. your old self has been nailed to the cross and crucified with him there. So agree with what God has already done for you. And begin to live your life in the spirit. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

Or find out more at www.dailyradiobible.com our music is provided by David Nevue www.davidnevue.com John says, "furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent His Son, to be the savior of the world." John is declaring a cosmic ontological shift, In all of humanity. Ontology refers to our state of being, who we are as human beings. John sees everyone having undergone a transformation in their relationship with God, because of Christ. Paul wrote about it this way in 1 Corinthians 15, "for us all die in Adam. So all will be made alive in Christ." God has reversed what Adam has done. He's put humanity on a new footing. He's made us alive. God has done this. This is a statement of fact, it's not a possibility contingent on our behavior. It simply is, and John and the Apostles are declaring to everyone, even Ethiopian eunuchs, who they now have become in Christ, a child of God. This was the message that filled the early followers with all enjoy and compelled them to go throughout the whole world proclaiming this good news, that the Father has sent His Son to be the savior of the world. Journey: Daily Bible reading, meditation and prayer with Hunter Barnes *Readings are from the New Revised Lectionary. Find out more at www.dailyradiobible.com Music is from David Nevue www.devidnevue.com Psalm 22, "the whole earth will acknowledge the Lord in return to Him. All the families of the nations will bow before him." David is saying something. He's acknowledging that God is the God of all, and God's redemption extends to all. Not just one people, but all people. Amos sees this too. In verse seven, he describes God asking a question of Israel. "Are you Israelites more important than Ethiopians as the Lord. I brought Israel out of Egypt. But I also brought the Philistines from Crete and led the arameans out of Kerr." Amos sees that the God of Israel is the God of all. He is the God who's working out the redemption and return of all people to himself. And it's happening in little ways, almost imperceptible ways. Jesus says it looks something like a mustard seed. It's the smallest most humble of seeds. When it's planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all plants. And all the birds come and rest in its shade. This is what David saw. It's what Amos saw. And it's what Jesus has done. Let us worship the God of all and participate with him in the planting of the small Kingdom seed. And worship, as we see the God who draws the world to Himself. Journey, daily bible reading, meditation and prayer with Hunter Barnes *Readings are from the New Revised Lectionary. Music is from David Nevue www.davidnevue.com Amos says God is sending a famine to the land, a famine, not of bread and water, but a famine of the ears, a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger with hunger. He says, unable to find what they're looking for. Our ears are hungry, but we cannot hear what we must in order to be truly satisfied. Sometimes we can have stomachs that are full, and yet still be dying of malnutrition. We simply are not eating what our bodies actually need. Amos is describing something like this here. We have fattened ourselves with the riches of this world. We have gained the whole world and yet we've starved our souls. What we often turn to in order to justify our indulgent lives, is religion, even the Bible. The Pharisees did this, and Jesus calls him out for it. He said to them, you search the Scriptures because you think they give you life. But the Scriptures speak of me, and you would not come to me. They concocted the Bible to be something it was never meant to be. They worship the Bible, and their traditions around it. But what their hearts were truly starving for was God, the living word. And the good news is that God has come to us in Christ to offer himself as God's bread for our famished souls. God's water for our parched tongues. He is what we were truly made for. And no amount of religion or Bible study or doctrinal fidelity will satisfy our famished souls. Only him. So let us come to him today. The bread of life, our bread from heaven Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message

Daily Bible reading, meditation and prayer with Hunter Barnes. * Readings are from the Revised Common Lectionary. Find out more at www.dailyradiobible.com music from David Nevue. https://www.davidnevue.com/ Transcript from today's podcast: You're probably much more familiar with today's Psalm than you think. I'll read the first verse. And you'll see what I'm talking about. from verse one, Psalm 22. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Sound familiar? These are the words Jesus spoke from the cross. This was his great cry of dereliction. These are the painful and perplexing words shouted from the cross. The term dereliction means the state of having been abandoned. It's been used by theologians for centuries to describe this cry from Jesus on the cross. And many sadly, have used these words to say that Jesus was abandoned by his Father on the cross. And even worse, that Jesus was killed by his Father on the cross. That is not what's happening here. In this cry, we see Jesus' total identification with humanity with our suffering, with our sense of alienation, and injustice. as painful as this experience was, we should be clear that Jesus was not abandoned by his father. Paul writes this in 2 Corinthians 5:19. "God was in Christ, reconciling himself to the world. " God the Father was with Jesus and the Spirit, reconciling the world to Himself. There is no division in the Trinity. And there never will be. God never abandons his Son, and God never abandons you. Today's passage gives us further insight into what Jesus was saying, and why he chose those words from Psalm 22. If we go further with him into the song, we hear these words from verse 24. "For he has not ignored or belittle the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help." Like many of David's songs, they begin with David feeling alone, defeated, abandon. But as he goes further into these deep prayers, he affirms what he knows to be true, that God is with him, that he has not been abandoned. That God's faithful love endures through all things. Jesus feels all that you felt, and he knows all that you're going through. And neither he nor the Father nor the Holy Spirit have abandoned you. God doesn't do abandonment. The next time the cry of your heart is My God, my God, why? know that he is with you. And perhaps you can go to verse 24. And be reminded that God has not turned his back on you. That God has heard your cry that he's with you. Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hunter-barnes9/message
