You Are Not Meant to Climb This Mountain Alone 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” This verse reminds me of a saying I heard several years ago that brought me comfort. At the time, there was a lot going on in my family. Everything was so hard, and I didn't understand why it was happening. Why did I need to go through all of that with my boys or with my marriage? The quote was something to the effect of, “Maybe you have been given this mountain to climb so that you can show others it can be done.” That quote helped me because it gave my suffering a purpose. It reminded me that what I was learning through my struggles could one day help someone else. This is what this verse is telling us. God is with us in our troubles, and He comforts us. God will be there for you through everything. There is nothing you have to go through alone. He is always there for you, not only to comfort you, but to strengthen you and help you through it. I love how this verse starts by reminding us that God is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. God plays so many roles in our lives. He is not only there to solve our problems, heal our loved ones, and answer our prayers. He also wants to comfort us. He understands what we are going through and has compassion for us. Do you ever feel like no one understands what you are going through? Maybe you keep it to yourself because you feel ashamed, afraid of judgment, or convinced no one would understand. If this is you, please know you are not alone. Over the years, I have talked to many people, and almost all of them felt alone in their struggles. It is a common feeling, but that does not make it true. Do you know who wants you to feel like you are alone? The enemy does. He is a liar. He whispers things like, “No one understands,” “Don't bother people with your problems,” “Things will never change,” and “You have to do this all by yourself.” These lies keep us isolated and disconnected from the very people who could help us. It is important that you hear me right now: HE IS A LIAR! HE IS A LIAR! You are not alone. There are many people who are going through the same thing you are going through, and there are many people who have already gone through it. Find someone who has been where you are and has made it through. I promise there is a way through whatever you are facing. There are communities for nearly every struggle imaginable—parenting challenges, depression, marriage struggles, caregiving, career issues, and so much more. The enemy wants us isolated. Let's not give him that satisfaction. Another lie the enemy tells us is that we would be bothering others with our problems. This is not true. People who truly love you want to know when you are hurting and want to help when they can. Even if they can't solve the problem, simply saying it out loud to another person can help. I once heard of two people who called each other once a week and simply took turns talking while the other listened without giving advice or judgment. Sometimes just saying things out loud helps more than we realize. If you don't feel comfortable talking to another person, try talking out loud to God. There is something powerful about bringing your struggles into the light. The enemy also likes to tell us that things will never change. This is another lie. I don't know what your circumstances are. Maybe it is something that will be a lifelong challenge. Maybe you have an illness that cannot be cured, or you are caring for someone whose situation may never improve. Even if your situation cannot change, that does not mean there is no hope. Even if your circumstances remain difficult, you can change how you show up to them. You can ask for help. You can practice self-care. You can allow others to support you. The enemy wants you exhausted and convinced you must carry everything yourself. That is another lie. There are people who want to help. Even when circumstances remain difficult, hope remains because God can change us within the situation. Please remember this: You have so much more power than the enemy wants you to think you do. I can't go into much detail in this short episode, but I truly believe that no one is stuck in a hopeless situation. I get worked up when I think about how much the enemy attacks people and convinces them they are alone. That is why I love this verse. God shows us compassion and comfort, and we are called to pass that compassion and comfort on to others. Is there someone in your life who is suffering? Have you been afraid to say anything because you worry they won't want your help? We need to be brave and ask anyway. Some people may not be ready to accept help, but that should not stop us from offering it. God did not create us to walk through life alone. If you are in a place to help someone, be bold enough to ask. If you need help, be brave enough to receive it. I am going to say these next four sentences because I know someone listening needs to hear them: YOU ARE LOVED! YOU ARE ENOUGH! YOU ARE STRONG! YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! “In Christ” reveals the covenant relationship we have with him. The spirit doesn't change who we are but empowers us to live in the covenant relationship with Christ, freely submitting to his lordship. God's everlasting love is declared in Romans 8. 1 Corinthians 11:23-27 we are in a covenant relationship with Christ and God. A biblical covenant is a binding, relational agreement that God establishes with people in which He defines the relationship, makes promises, sets conditions or obligations, and specifies consequences. It is more than a contract and more than a feeling-based relationship, it is a structured relationship grounded in God's initiative. He is our Father and Jesus is our Lord. The Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic Romans 3:23–24 “in Christ” as a covenant relationship, Christ is Lord who promises justification, redemption, and eternal life, and our response is to submit to his lordship by living under his rule, within the realm of his saving grace. “In Christ” is a metaphor of sphere and relationship, meaning to live under Christ's covenant lordship and to share in all that he has accomplished. Romans 6:3-11 we are to identify with Christ's accomplishments. This is our faith. Romans 6:23 …the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:1-8 flesh – we are born self-centered, given to covetousness, rebellion and the desire to fix ourselves. Galatians 5:16-26 Romans 8:9 the spirit doesn't change who we are but empowers us to live in the covenant relationship with Christ, freely submitting to his lordship. Romans 8:15 you have not been given the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Romans 8:18 God loves you. He wants you in His family. Romans 8:25 God loves you and wants you to be with Him forever. Romans 8:31 God loves you, you are part of His eternal purpose. Romans 8:34 God loves you and always has your back. Here in the thick of it, our eyes full of pixels and our veins full of microplastics, out here with the child amputees in Gaza and the frightened street schizophrenics in Los Angeles and the pigs living their whole lives in metal crates the size of their bodies, our lives ruled by algorithms and wealthy world eaters as we pray for a miracle on knees made of miracles with clasped hands made of miracles in a world made of miracles, craning our necks to see past the giant flashing signs saying "YOU ARE LOVED, YOU ARE LOVE" in order to find Defects and Inadequacy. In the thick of it, up to our ears in it, cracked wide open, wide open to the screams of mothers clutching tiny broken bodies, to the screams of men on fire, to the screams of dying coral reefs and rainforests, to the screams inside all of us saying "Something is wrong, something has gone very, very wrong," wide open to the agony but also to the beauty, to the booming holiness of the earth and the sky, to the mysteries hiding in abandoned buildings, to the noble pigeons whose pristine minds know nothing of Elon Musk, to that place of tenderness within all of us which we cover with shields and armor and feigned toughness and pretend confidence, feeling it all, letting it all in, the pain and the exaltation and the weight and the exuberance and the rage and the orgasms and the darkness and the light and the Israeli stormtroopers and their victims and the bank boys and the savage saints and that song within all of us calling us home saying "It's here! It's here! Buddha nature is here!", and blessing it all, my darling, blessing it all. Here in the thick of it, our hearts sliced open like gutted fish, we breathe in the air, exhaust fumes and all, and we realize with slowly widening eyelids that this, this is paradise. There is no Heaven but That which sits before us and beats within our chests and grows the grass and spins the galaxies, right this very waking moment, closer to us than our own skeletons which will one day be laid to rest in the soil of a revolving ball in a universe we never once in our lives understood. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...
