You Are Not Meant to Climb This Mountain Alone 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” This verse reminds me of a saying I heard several years ago that brought me comfort. At the time, there was a lot going on in my family. Everything was so hard, and I didn't understand why it was happening. Why did I need to go through all of that with my boys or with my marriage? The quote was something to the effect of, “Maybe you have been given this mountain to climb so that you can show others it can be done.” That quote helped me because it gave my suffering a purpose. It reminded me that what I was learning through my struggles could one day help someone else. This is what this verse is telling us. God is with us in our troubles, and He comforts us. God will be there for you through everything. There is nothing you have to go through alone. He is always there for you, not only to comfort you, but to strengthen you and help you through it. I love how this verse starts by reminding us that God is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. God plays so many roles in our lives. He is not only there to solve our problems, heal our loved ones, and answer our prayers. He also wants to comfort us. He understands what we are going through and has compassion for us. Do you ever feel like no one understands what you are going through? Maybe you keep it to yourself because you feel ashamed, afraid of judgment, or convinced no one would understand. If this is you, please know you are not alone. Over the years, I have talked to many people, and almost all of them felt alone in their struggles. It is a common feeling, but that does not make it true. Do you know who wants you to feel like you are alone? The enemy does. He is a liar. He whispers things like, “No one understands,” “Don't bother people with your problems,” “Things will never change,” and “You have to do this all by yourself.” These lies keep us isolated and disconnected from the very people who could help us. It is important that you hear me right now: HE IS A LIAR! HE IS A LIAR! You are not alone. There are many people who are going through the same thing you are going through, and there are many people who have already gone through it. Find someone who has been where you are and has made it through. I promise there is a way through whatever you are facing. There are communities for nearly every struggle imaginable—parenting challenges, depression, marriage struggles, caregiving, career issues, and so much more. The enemy wants us isolated. Let's not give him that satisfaction. Another lie the enemy tells us is that we would be bothering others with our problems. This is not true. People who truly love you want to know when you are hurting and want to help when they can. Even if they can't solve the problem, simply saying it out loud to another person can help. I once heard of two people who called each other once a week and simply took turns talking while the other listened without giving advice or judgment. Sometimes just saying things out loud helps more than we realize. If you don't feel comfortable talking to another person, try talking out loud to God. There is something powerful about bringing your struggles into the light. The enemy also likes to tell us that things will never change. This is another lie. I don't know what your circumstances are. Maybe it is something that will be a lifelong challenge. Maybe you have an illness that cannot be cured, or you are caring for someone whose situation may never improve. Even if your situation cannot change, that does not mean there is no hope. Even if your circumstances remain difficult, you can change how you show up to them. You can ask for help. You can practice self-care. You can allow others to support you. The enemy wants you exhausted and convinced you must carry everything yourself. That is another lie. There are people who want to help. Even when circumstances remain difficult, hope remains because God can change us within the situation. Please remember this: You have so much more power than the enemy wants you to think you do. I can't go into much detail in this short episode, but I truly believe that no one is stuck in a hopeless situation. I get worked up when I think about how much the enemy attacks people and convinces them they are alone. That is why I love this verse. God shows us compassion and comfort, and we are called to pass that compassion and comfort on to others. Is there someone in your life who is suffering? Have you been afraid to say anything because you worry they won't want your help? We need to be brave and ask anyway. Some people may not be ready to accept help, but that should not stop us from offering it. God did not create us to walk through life alone. If you are in a place to help someone, be bold enough to ask. If you need help, be brave enough to receive it. I am going to say these next four sentences because I know someone listening needs to hear them: YOU ARE LOVED! YOU ARE ENOUGH! YOU ARE STRONG! YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, help us to see the enemy's lies for what they are. Help shine a light on any lies in our lives that we might be believing. Help us to know that our situation is never hopeless because with you, all things are possible. Help us all to be bold and brave and to reach out and ask for help when we need it, or accept the help that is offered. Help us also be bold and brave enough to offer help wherever we can. Lord, we are so thankful for all the compassion and comfort that you give to us. Please help us to pass that on to others. Lord, help us to love others as you love us. You are truly amazing, and we love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen. “In Christ” reveals the covenant relationship we have with him. The spirit doesn't change who we are but empowers us to live in the covenant relationship with Christ, freely submitting to his lordship. God's everlasting love is declared in Romans 8. 1 Corinthians 11:23-27 we are in a covenant relationship with Christ and God. A biblical covenant is a binding, relational agreement that God establishes with people in which He defines the relationship, makes promises, sets conditions or obligations, and specifies consequences. It is more than a contract and more than a feeling-based relationship, it is a structured relationship grounded in God's initiative. He is our Father and Jesus is our Lord. The Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic Romans 3:23–24 “in Christ” as a covenant relationship, Christ is Lord who promises justification, redemption, and eternal life, and our response is to submit to his lordship by living under his rule, within the realm of his saving grace. “In Christ” is a metaphor of sphere and relationship, meaning to live under Christ's covenant lordship and to share in all that he has accomplished. Romans 6:3-11 we are to identify with Christ's accomplishments. This is our faith. Romans 6:23 …the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:1-8 flesh – we are born self-centered, given to covetousness, rebellion and the desire to fix ourselves. Galatians 5:16-26 Romans 8:9 the spirit doesn't change who we are but empowers us to live in the covenant relationship with Christ, freely submitting to his lordship. Romans 8:15 you have not been given the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Romans 8:18 God loves you. He wants you in His family. Romans 8:25 God loves you and wants you to be with Him forever. Romans 8:31 God loves you, you are part of His eternal purpose. Romans 8:34 God loves you and always has your back. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Year C – Pentecost – June 8, 2025 Pastor Megan Floyd Acts 2:1-21 Grace and peace to you in the name of our Advocate, God's Holy Spirit, who walks alongside us every day. Amen. *** God doesn't create in half measures… ya know? Think about our planet… and all the intricate details included on every level of life… from whole eco-systems down to tiny microbes. Think about… us…you and me… There is no one else quite like you. You are unique and beloved… God knit you together after God's own image, gave you life with God's own breath… and loves you fully… God doesn't create in half-measures… and all that God creates is precious and loved, including you… And since the beginning of humanity, God has invited us to be in relationship with God… never forcing the relationship, but giving us that choice… because we are loved. A choice to respond to the presence of God in our lives… in our world… in each other… and within our very own bodies. What began as God's breath across the face of the waters, bringing forth life… guiding us as a pillar of smoke… a burning bush… a booming thunder… and a still, small voice… Always speaking… if we are willing to listen… always guiding… if we are willing to follow… always inviting… if we are willing to respond. Becoming human in the person of Jesus… entering our lives in the most humble way… teaching… loving… inviting… suffering… dying… forgiving and still loving… still inviting. The presence of God around us and in us, in countless ways, reminding us that God's Holy Spirit… has been with us from the beginning, and God's Holy Spirit will be with us to the end… Reminding us that God's Spirit was with us, and is with us, and that even though God in Jesus must ascend to the Creator, we have another advocate… the one who has been with us all along. God's Spirit… the pneuma in Greek… the ruach in Hebrew… God's holy breath that fills your lungs and gives you life… is with you always. God does not create in half measures… and God does not abandon God's creation. But as with all things that are constant in our lives… we often overlook this continual holy presence with us… take it for granted… after all… how often have you stopped to consider the air in your lungs? So, this was the scene in Jerusalem that day… Jesus had ascended, and now it was time to share the gospel story… time to witness to all that had occurred… time to light a fire under this message of good news! God's Spirit… our constant companion… needed to get those disciples moving. What better chance than to cause a holy disruption during Shavuot… the Festival of Weeks… the Pentecost festival in Jerusalem, which happens 50 days after Passover, commemorating the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people… A time when Jewish people from all around the known world would have made a pilgrimage to the city to celebrate and honor God's word. A mass of people… diverse and inclusive… together… for God. This is the moment… this is the time… God's Spirit moves through… and causes a scene… Like I said… God doesn't really act in half-measures. The Spirit of God comes upon these people as a great, roaring sound like a violent rushing wind… Filling the room and appearing among them like divided tongues, as of fire, and resting upon each of them… And giving them the ability to proclaim the Gospel in whatever language it needed to be heard… The Holy Spirit is in the house, demanding attention, engaging every one of their senses… for the Gospel must be heard. The Gospel… must be experienced. What a moment! A dramatic onslaught of action and motion… of speaking… and of hearing… confusion… and… of understanding. Hearing the proclamation of the gospel… hearing the good news of salvation… of love and forgiveness. Hearing, each in their native language… the message that Love has come and is making all things new. Death is overcome and new life is born... new breath… new growth. We are gathered by this swirling wind, but also provoked and pushed to give our witness… to tell our story… For the Gospel must be heard… and God doesn't do with half-measures. Pentecost is only the beginning… the fire that was ignited on that day burns within you still… guiding you toward God's love… and empowering you to share your story. God's Holy Spirit… your constant companion… your ever-present connection to Christ within yourself and in others… is guiding you daily toward God's love. And occasionally causing a holy disruption… either as that still, small voice that insists on being heard, or as a roaring wind… a sensory disruption that demands attention and cannot be ignored. God's Spirit doesn't do with half-measures. Shaking us out of our complacency… our routine… giving us the courage to speak up when our words are necessary… and the wisdom to be silent and listen, when our understanding is required. God's Holy Spirit is igniting within us… attuning our senses toward God's will. Whenever we feel that push… or pull… a gentle nudge or maybe a hard shove… toward loving more widely, sharing more generously… welcoming more inclusively… Whenever we feel that call inside our hearts to extend and receive grace and forgiveness more openly… and freely… That is God's Holy Spirit igniting within you… that is a Pentecost moment. What happened to those disciples in Jerusalem on that festival day so long ago was amazing… incredible… It gave birth to the church and lit a fire under the message, spreading the Gospel to the corners of the world… For the Gospel must be heard, and God doesn't do with half-measures. That experience taught them, and us, that God is doing a new thing… that the Good News of Jesus's death and resurrection must be heard, and that this is a message for all people, everywhere… that there are no boundaries around God's love. This experience connected them… connected them to the presence of God within themselves and within each other. It reminded them, and us… that what began as God's holy breath across the face of the waters… still fills our lungs. That our Creator, in whose image we are made, filled us with holy breath… guided us through wind, fire, thunder, and silence… loved us through Jesus and inspires us still as our advocate. The experience of Pentecost is that God doesn't act in half-measures, and that God's message of love must be heard. And so God's Holy Spirit… the pneuma… the ruach… is within you… sometimes whispering to you, and sometimes shouting… that you are loved… You are loved with so much abundance that you cannot help but to share that love with others in the name of the one who is, who was, and who is yet to come… Our God and Creator, our Savior, and our Advocate. You are loved with so much abundance… because God doesn't create in half-measures. And that… is a message that must be heard. Amen.

Here in the thick of it, our eyes full of pixels and our veins full of microplastics, out here with the child amputees in Gaza and the frightened street schizophrenics in Los Angeles and the pigs living their whole lives in metal crates the size of their bodies, our lives ruled by algorithms and wealthy world eaters as we pray for a miracle on knees made of miracles with clasped hands made of miracles in a world made of miracles, craning our necks to see past the giant flashing signs saying "YOU ARE LOVED, YOU ARE LOVE" in order to find Defects and Inadequacy. In the thick of it, up to our ears in it, cracked wide open, wide open to the screams of mothers clutching tiny broken bodies, to the screams of men on fire, to the screams of dying coral reefs and rainforests, to the screams inside all of us saying "Something is wrong, something has gone very, very wrong," wide open to the agony but also to the beauty, to the booming holiness of the earth and the sky, to the mysteries hiding in abandoned buildings, to the noble pigeons whose pristine minds know nothing of Elon Musk, to that place of tenderness within all of us which we cover with shields and armor and feigned toughness and pretend confidence, feeling it all, letting it all in, the pain and the exaltation and the weight and the exuberance and the rage and the orgasms and the darkness and the light and the Israeli stormtroopers and their victims and the bank boys and the savage saints and that song within all of us calling us home saying "It's here! It's here! Buddha nature is here!", and blessing it all, my darling, blessing it all. Here in the thick of it, our hearts sliced open like gutted fish, we breathe in the air, exhaust fumes and all, and we realize with slowly widening eyelids that this, this is paradise. There is no Heaven but That which sits before us and beats within our chests and grows the grass and spins the galaxies, right this very waking moment, closer to us than our own skeletons which will one day be laid to rest in the soil of a revolving ball in a universe we never once in our lives understood.
