TODAY'S DEVOTION: The story of God's Spirit shared among his people runs like a current through today's readings. In Numbers, Joshua hesitated, unsure if the others were worthy to receive the Spirit that had been given to Moses. But Moses, with a heart tuned to God's desire, longed for all of God's people to be filled with that same Spirit. That longing—the dream that none would be left out, that everyone would know the life that comes from God—is fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus stands in the power of the Spirit, bringing good news, healing, and restoration to all kinds of people: fishermen, the sick, the demon-possessed, and even a leper—a man considered so unclean, so unreachable. It's that very leper, made clean and whole by Jesus's touch, who becomes one of his greatest heralds. He's compelled to tell everyone what's happened, to spread the word that Jesus is willing and able to heal and make new. This is the story still being told today. Those who have been made clean, healed of brokenness and isolation, can't help but declare what Jesus has done. All the former "lepers"—the ones who know what it means to be outcast, who have experienced grace—are letting the world know the compassion of Jesus. This isn't a story reserved for the past. Even now, right where you are, the hands of Jesus reach out with love, to make you clean, to restore your soul. Maybe this is happening for you in this very moment. That is the hope and purpose of this podcast: to remind us again and again that it is Jesus who heals, who cleanses, who renews. He never stops reaching out in mercy. And as we experience this new life, we're invited to live in the Spirit, to abide with him, and to let our own lives become testimonies—just like the leper—of what God has done by his grace, for us and for the whole world. Let us live in the newness of what Jesus is doing. Let his compassion and transforming life flow through us, and may we spread that good news, letting the world see the love that reaches out and makes us whole. That's my prayer for my own heart, for my loved ones, and for you today. May it be so. I love stories of the sea—ships in peril, stories of struggling to survive the storms. The Bible provides some good ones too. There's the story of Jonah, and then there's this story today with Paul. The parallels we find with the great stories of survival at sea and our own life are amazing. Do you remember when Jonah was on board and was in the storm? He said, "Throw me into the sea and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault." Jonah knew the only way the crew could save themselves was to throw him in the sea to be drowned. Then things would be calm again and they would survive. And later on, when Jesus came, he said, now someone greater than Jonah is here. What's he saying? He's saying that there's a great storm on the way for each of us. In fact, we don't get through this life without experiencing that storm. And we won't survive unless someone far greater than Jonah throws himself into the waves for us. It's the ultimate storm, and Jesus is the Someone who is greater—he has thrown himself into the wind and waves and sunk beneath the ocean depths for us. He's offered up his body to the waves so that we might survive. Not only that, but many of us have sunk to the very bottom, and when we do, we can see him there. He meets us there. In fact, he's been with us all along. He doesn't abandon us. He's always and forever with us, no matter where we are. Whenever I hear of survival at sea, I think about what Jesus has done for us. My hope is that when I go through storms in life—and I do, and I have—and the seas look ominous and threatening, I'll remember that He is with me right where I am. You can trust Him to see you through the storms of this life. I'll trust Him not only to be my salvation when I die, but right here, right now. That's a prayer that I have for you. May you see Jesus and trust in what He has done, and live in his resurrection life right now. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. We're reminded of how the scriptures tell a story that points us to Jesus—the one in whom we live, move, and have our being. As we reflect on the journey of Paul and the "sober truth" of Christ's resurrection, Hunter encourages us to embrace true freedom and live unchained by our past or self-righteousness. Together, we'll spend time in scripture, prayer, and gratitude for a community that gathers daily to share in God's word. So, grab your Bible and let's step into another day of joy, peace, and the reminder that you are deeply loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It seems crazy to everyone, but Paul is speaking the sober truth. To most people, the idea of a dead man being raised to life seems crazy. But Paul says, why does it seem so incredible that God can raise the dead? To Paul, this is the sober truth. There's nothing crazy about it. And when we believe in this sober truth and trust the risen Christ, he sets us free from the inside out. So Paul the prisoner stands before this crowd and says, I pray to God that both you and everyone here in this audience might become the same as I am—except for these chains. He has chains, but he is the freest man there. The irony is that at the end of this speech, Agrippa and Festus and all the others walk away, and their final comment is, "He could have been set free if he hadn't appealed to Caesar." Unfortunately, they weren't sober-minded and couldn't see that the freest man among them was Paul. He had been freed of the guilt of his former life where he had overseen the death of Christians and had persecuted Christ himself. He had been freed from the self-righteousness that blindly led him to that kind of life. He may have been in chains, but Paul was sober and free. Through the resurrection, you have been included in the sober, free life of God. Live a sober and free life. Don't let religion come in and entangle. Don't let your past come in and chain you up anymore. Live like Paul in the reality of what is—what is true about all that God has done in Christ, not only for you but for the whole world. You are sober and you are free. Live in it. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul this very day. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son this very day. And that's a prayer that I have for you this very day. May it be so. So grab a warm drink, maybe take a walk if you can, and join this global community in Scripture, prayer, and gratitude—always remembering, as Hunter beautifully says, that you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It makes no sense. That's what Felix, the Roman official, thought as Paul stood before him on trial. The matter seemed confusing—"something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus who Paul insists is alive." Why would someone risk everything, suffer, even face death, for what looks like just a dead religion? It's not logical—unless you've met the Living Christ. Paul, too, once thought this Jesus movement made no sense. In fact, he did more than doubt; he saw it as a threat and fought to destroy it. But all that changed on the Damascus Road, when Paul encountered Jesus himself—alive, risen. His life was turned upside down, and everything that once seemed foolish suddenly became the very logic of his existence. It's the same for us. Unless we encounter the Risen Christ, faith can seem confusing and pointless, especially when life feels dark or when the world leads us into suffering or confusion. But when we meet the One who has conquered death, who knows us and loves us, it all begins to make sense. Life's suffering and confusion find meaning in Him. The invitation today is to stop hiding, to stop running, and simply be present with this Living Christ. You are known and loved. As you sit honestly before Him, let Him reveal His heart to you. Only then—when we open ourselves to truly know Him—do things begin to make sense. We see that life isn't about following a dead man, but about living in relationship with the Risen Lord. And when that happens, even the storms and sufferings of life, though still painful, become a part of a greater story—His story. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: All are accounted for, all 603,550. These are all the troops of Israel listed by their family names. All are warriors ready for battle, ready to march out under the banner of their family name. They are ready to follow the Ark of God's covenant and go wherever God's Spirit leads them. And so it is with Paul too. Solitary Paul is accounted for every day for two years in his prison cell. Paul too is a kind of soldier, ready to go wherever the Spirit of God leads him. But sometimes God's leading is not to go anywhere at all. Sometimes God's calling you to march forward into new lands. Sometimes it's to stay put. For Paul, he was to stay put for two years in prison. For two years, he was brought before his captor and forced to present himself, only to be sent away. No changes to his status. Sometimes your orders are just to stay put, and when they are, it can be discouraging and hard. It's important to remember that waiting is a part of God's plan too. James 1:2-4 says, dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow. For when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. Sometimes God's doing a work on the soldier, and sometimes that means staying put. It might be two days, it might be two years, it might be two decades, but God's got a plan, and part of that plan is to work on us. He's making an opportunity for us to grow, and our growth comes from tested endurance. When that endurance is being tested, it's an opportunity for great joy. Remember that you are a soldier too, and remember that God has a plan. A big part of God's plan is awakening us to the transforming power of Christ's life in us. That's what gives us the strength to do those hard things like staying put or marching forward. It's only in the power of Christ in us that we can do any of the things he calls us to do. So allow the Spirit of God to wake you up to the life of Christ in you. It's his life now. All glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. And that's a prayer that I have for my own soul, that I'll wake up to the life of Christ in me. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. From the moment he meets Jesus on the road to Damascus, the message is clear: suffering will accompany his calling. And yet, with every proclamation of hardship, there is also a prescription—a vision of Christ to sustain him. Paul's journey is filled with adversity, but each ache, each threat, each moment in prison or under accusation, is met with a fresh vision of the Lord himself. Jesus appears to Paul with words of encouragement: "Just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the good news in Rome as well." Be encouraged. That is the living message—not only for Paul, but for us. In every dark hour, every pressure, every threat, God meets us with himself. Jesus says, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." His purposes for our lives will not fail. Through temporary affliction, he works an eternal weight and glory. Are you suffering today? Are you threatened or burdened? The prescription remains: the vision of Jesus. Look to him. Hold on to the clear sight of the Lord in your midst. This is where encouragement is found. He is present now, working something beautiful, something lasting, through every trial and hardship. Let your heart be encouraged, your eyes fixed on Him. TODAY'S DEVOTION: What is the one word that stands between you and transformation? As Heather points out in today's reflection, Paul's testimony in Acts 22 captivated the crowd—until he uttered a single word: Gentile. For them, this word encapsulated their identity, their justification, their hope before God. It became an idol—a thing they staked their lives on, something so central that its mention caused outrage and shut down any openness to God's new work. But Heather reminds us that this is not just their story—it's ours too. Each of us has a word, a source of hope or identity we are tempted to lean on, justify ourselves with, or make ultimate. That word might be family, career, riches, reputation, or something else. When challenged, it creates a crisis in our hearts. Like Paul's crowd, we can revolt, shout, and shut down, all because someone has put their finger on the thing we can't bear to surrender. Yet, the gospel isn't stopped by irritated idols—it seeks out and transforms them. The Holy Spirit will often put his finger on those deep places we make ultimate, those sacred words we won't let go of. Sometimes, they are even good things, but when they take the place of Christ, we must let the Spirit speak, even if it causes discomfort or a visceral response. Pay attention when the Spirit challenges these places in your life. What is your word? What causes a halt in your journey with God? Let Christ be supreme in all things. When the idols in your heart come out swinging, don't ignore them. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to bring transformation, to make Jesus the center of your hope and identity. This is my prayer for myself, for my family, and for you: May the Spirit give us ears to hear when God speaks, even if the word stings. Let us lay down every idol and let Christ reign, so the gospel may bring its true freedom, joy, and love into our lives. Amen. We live in this tension. On one hand, we go through things and we want to be healed and delivered. We want things to work out, and at times God is delighted to do just that—to provide, to heal, to deliver. So one step of faith is asking for and seeking these things from God. But with the other foot, the other step that we must take is to understand that this light and momentary affliction is working out for us something of eternal importance. The life of faith often entails learning to walk amidst those two very real tensions, where we hold firm to the promise that God is indeed our healer, our deliverer, redeemer. He will indeed do all that he has promised. And yet at the same time, there very well may be something that he wants to teach us through it. Maybe he will choose to heal you today, and maybe he won't. But we also know that we will indeed be healed. All of creation will be restored in him, and that day is coming. In the meantime, whatever the affliction that you're suffering through, it is momentary, and in the scales of eternity, Paul says they are light. It may not feel like that right here, right now, but faith in God's goodness helps us to see beyond the right here and the right now. And faith is an invitation to enter into the presence of God. His healing, His deliverance, His redemption isn't just designated for some distant time. We can begin to experience those things in part even today. God has something he wants to teach us all, and we need to trust him and walk with him through all that life brings us. He'll prove himself strong in our weakness. He will be your comforter and your strength. Walk this way of faith with both feet and trust him each step of the way. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. So grab your Bible, settle in, and let's journey through God's word—together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Paul's a good pastor. We see his pastor heart here in Acts 20. He's calling together the elders of the church in Ephesus. He spent three years pouring his life into these people. Paul senses something in his spirit, and he gathers the elders together to share with them what the Holy Spirit is telling him. The winds are changing. He has suffering ahead, jail to endure. Paul knows it. These elders are gathered together with him for the last time. He knows that they too are on a journey. He's letting them know that they too have hardships coming. There'll be a time coming when the church that they love, that they adore, have worked so hard for, will divide. There'll be some among them that'll distort the truth. They will make it all about themselves and not about God. Paul sees this. He knows it's coming. He knows the winds are changing, not just in his life but in the lives of those in his church. In our journey, the winds change as well. Sometimes there's flat calm, and sometimes there's a gale blowing. I don't know where you're at right now. Maybe you're in a storm. Maybe you're wondering if you're going to make it. Maybe you feel it in your bones that there's more suffering that awaits you, like Paul did. Maybe things are good and you're in a sweet season in your life. Maybe you're somewhere in between. I don't know this. I don't claim to be like Paul. But whatever the season you're facing, or however the seas might appear, there's something you will need, something we all need. It's the message Paul was so desperate to preach. It's the last thing Paul wanted to say to them, and it's the first message we need to hear to get ourselves through the storm, to endure suffering patiently, or just to get through the day. That message is this, found in verse 32: And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself. It's the message of grace. It builds you up from God's heart to Paul's heart to your heart. It's a message of grace. Grace builds up. That's the message God has for your soul today. It's the message Paul spent three years pouring into the people of Ephesus. That's the message God is pouring into your life every day if you'll receive it. It's a message of grace that is able to build you up. Receive that blessing from God today. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. That's what Paul was persistently preaching in Ephesus, and it's what we need to hear again today. Hunter points us to Acts 19, where Paul boldly argues about the kingdom of God—not just for a moment, but for months, even years, so that all who would listen, Jew and Greek alike, might understand. What is this kingdom that Paul proclaims? It's the reality that the King has come—Jesus. His arrival signals the breaking in of something new, a kingdom not built on the agendas of this world, not subject to its idols, not content to serve anyone's interests but God's own. In Ephesus, Paul's message disrupted more than religious routines; it overturned business interests, social orders, and deeply held allegiances. Like Demetrius the silversmith observed, this news, this gospel, this announcement wasn't just an add-on to the existing way of things. It threatened to derail the very agenda of Artemis—of the competing gods and pursuits of the world. And here's the truth: God has an agenda for your life too, and it isn't always easy or comfortable. It might mean things get turned over, that familiar structures come undone, and that priorities are rearranged. When God invades, things don't stay the same. But He is fully committed: committed to His own purpose, yes, but also to you—rooting you deeply in the circle of His love, bringing you into the Kingdom for which you were made. The invitation, then, is to let His agenda become your own, to step into the joy, freedom, and purpose found only in the reign of King Jesus. This is where barriers come down, lives are changed, and communities are renewed. This is the place of true belonging, adoption, forgiveness, and love. That's my prayer for myself, for my family, for you. May we all see His kingdom come in every part of our lives. May the joy, freedom, and love of Christ rule in us. May we live as citizens of His Kingdom, knowing that in all things—we are loved. No doubt about it. May it be so. Don't be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you and harm you, for many people in this city belong to me. God wants Paul to keep doing what He's asked him to do. God has a plan for many people, He says, in that city. They already belong to him. They will soon discover what they don't quite yet know. He wants Paul to know that he doesn't need to be afraid. This simple message makes you wonder why Paul needed a vision to have that reinforced, but apparently he did. And sometimes we do too. Sometimes we need a clear vision of Christ in order for us to do those simple things that we knew all along. Trust God. Trust that God is already at work in these people's lives before we even say a word. God is there. We don't need to be afraid. You know, I've lived a good part of my life next to the Pacific Ocean. I enjoy talking about it, sharing it with you. The ocean's so big, so beyond any one person. Sometimes you can look out over it and you could feel afraid. There's no controlling the sea, and yet there is a way to participate with it. You can actually learn to harness some of the might of that ocean. You can also learn to draw some of your life from that ocean, as sailors and fishermen have learned from the beginning of time. There's an old hymn by the writer Jesse Adams I'm going to go ahead and read these lyrics to you. They speak to what we've just read about today. I feel the winds of God today. Today my sail I lift, though heavy oft with drenching spray and torn with many a rift. If hope but light the water's crest and Christ my bark will use, I'll seek the seas at his behest and brave another cruise. It is the wind of God that dries my vain regretful tears, until with braver thoughts shall rise the purer, brighter years. If cast on shores of selfish ease or pleasure I should be, Lord, let me feel Thy freshening breeze, and I'll put back to sea, if ever I forget Thy love, and how that love was shown. Lift high the blood-red flag above, it bears Thy name alone, great pilot of my onward way. Thou will not let me drift. I feel the winds of God today. Today my sail I lift. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will lift the sail, that I'll not be afraid, that I'll trust in him. That's the prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: They called him a babbler, a teacher of strange things. That's what they said of Paul when he appeared before the philosophers of Athens. How is it that even the most enlightened among us can hear the good news of the gospel and end up interpreting it as babble? "What's this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he's picked up?" God reveals God. Ours is to participate with God who reveals himself, the God who's already at work. Paul knows this. That's why he looks out over all the people of Athens and he says, you are already living and moving and having your being in God. He's already right here. He's already with you. You just don't know it yet. I've come to tell you who he is, to tell you how good he is, how he has already purchased your freedom and the life that you so deeply desire. The gospel is the good news that God has come to us in our blindness and opens our eyes to behold who he is. It's a declaration of what is and what has been done. When our eyes are open, we see that we are his children and we did nothing to bring that about, that God was always at work in my life long before I had any clue. This God who loved me has loved and embraced the whole world. He's looked upon the whole human race like a good father looks upon children he loves. The world doesn't know it yet, but that's what's true. To many, it all sounds like babble because they're blind. They've bought into a lie of separation. We don't think God is for us. We're blind to the God who loved us before we even knew him. But God opens eyes, and God reveals himself, and he's come to let the whole world know that they are loved. People are living and moving and having their being in him. He's opening their eyes. He's showing everyone, ordinary people like you and I. He's showing all of us. He's making himself known. Do you hear him? Do you hear what he's saying to you? Or does it all just sound like babble? TODAY'S DEVOTION: We all struggle with the desire to manipulate and control, to offer our own strange fire, if you will. Tragically, it consumes us too. But there's a kind of fire that doesn't consume and kill. That's the fire that we see in the Holy Spirit. This is a fire that comes to dwell with us. In Acts 2, we see the Holy Spirit descend in tongues of fire. This is a fire that is bestowed on us and received. It's not manipulated. It's given to us, not through our own effort or designs. Instead, it descends on us. It's a gift from heaven. How do we become carriers of this fire of life? Paul and Silas tell the Philippian jailer, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you'll be saved along with everyone in your household." It seems like all of us in some way or another want to work with strange fire and gain control. It's no different now than it was then. The slave owners in Acts 16 have a girl that tells the future—this is a strange fire. The political leaders in town wanted to pacify the mob—they're playing with strange fire. The jailer drew his sword to kill himself for fear of his own execution—this, too, is a kind of strange fire. Strange fire is all about wanting to control and manipulate to ensure our future or to get what we want, whether it's fortune, power, honor. We all want to make strange fire to get these things. Our strategies appear to work for a while, but in the end, like Nadab and Abihu, it doubles back and ends up consuming us in the end. There are two kinds of fire. One is strange and will ultimately consume us. It's fueled by the desire to control, to manipulate. The other kind is the fire of God's presence that's received as a gift. What do we do for that? We believe in the Lord Jesus. We trust in him. We say yes to him. We say yes to his life. We give up control. We give up on our need to coerce. This is a life-giving fire that dwells within us, entirely bestowed upon us by his grace. It does not consume. It does not kill. Instead, it purifies us, heals us, and offers us his life. It creates within us something new, and offers us true riches, true power, true honor. And all these things are a gift. It is the holy fire of God in us. Today, you can live and walk in the reality of the fire that comes down from heaven. It is your life—the Holy Spirit, Christ in you. This gift has been bestowed upon you. Live in this fire today. Abide in it, not trying to control and conjure up things, but simply resting and receiving Christ's life. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Did you feel the weight of it? The heavy yoke of Leviticus? The requirements of the law were elaborate and complex. The details were exacting, right down to putting blood on the right ear, thumb, and right big toe of the priest. It was a heavy yoke with staggering specificity. They put themselves in peril if they got it wrong. Yet in Acts today, Paul and Barnabas are preaching a different message. A gospel of good news, not a heavy yoke. All the demands of the Law of Moses are fulfilled in Jesus. He is the sacrificial lamb, the high priest, our advocate, and our temple. Jesus is the reality behind all the shadow play of the Law of Moses. The pressures of the law are lethal if they are misunderstood or misapplied. We are to trust in Jesus, who has made us right with God, not the heavy yoke of the Book of Leviticus, and not all our attempts at fulfilling the law's demands. This heavy yoke was more than anyone could carry, then or now. Essentially, Peter says in Acts, let's not put the book of Leviticus on the backs of these Gentile converts and tell them to fulfill it when neither we nor our ancestors could carry it. We know that the only one who has ever been able to bear the weight of it is the Lord Jesus himself. Salvation and being made right with God comes only by grace through the faith of Jesus. Jesus alone carried that heavy yoke. We can't do it. No one ever has. And God is proclaiming that gift of life and hope, the easy yoke, to Gentiles too. It's not Jesus plus circumcision, Jesus plus Levitical law, or Jesus plus Moses. It's just Jesus. His undeserved grace is it. That's how we are made right with God. By walking in His Spirit, we are released into the goodness of this good news. You and I may not have the Levitical laws around our neck. It's not the Levitical laws that make it hard for us to receive God's grace. When we read Leviticus, most of us probably think it's just a little weird. But we do create our own morally equivalent barriers that make it hard to live and experience God's grace and strength. We come up with things like: if I were just a better mom, made more money, got my temper under control, if I was more moral, read my Bible more, went to church more, gave more, then I'm sure God would love me more. It's not the Book of Leviticus you are trying to carry. It's the Book of Heather, or Carol, or Andrew, or Hunter. Just insert your name. We create our own morally equivalent books that make it hard for us to receive the good news of the gospel. When the church of Antioch got the letter delivered by Barsabbas and Silas, it brought the believers great joy as they read it. It said, "Take off your yoke." That's why they were joyous. They were freed from that burden that they could not carry. You don't have to shoulder the book of Leviticus, or the book that you have written for yourself. How does any of this stuff have anything to do with Jesus? These things can seem so strange and far removed from our own lives. Not many of us have seen an animal offered on an altar. What does it all mean? Hebrews 10:1-2 says this: The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year. But they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. The good thing to come is your perfect cleansing for all time and your feelings of guilt disappearing. That's the good thing that we're only seeing a shadow of in these strange things we read about in Leviticus. This shadow play and detailed systems of sacrifices didn't change the way they felt on the inside. That's why they came back year after year and sadly too often. So it is today, the shadow play that we make up to get rid of all our bad feelings of guilt. They don't work either. But we've been made right with God, not through a ram or a bull or a bird. Jesus is the perfect lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Cleansing you, making you new. God wants us to know that. And he also wants us to know that in that sacrifice of love, he's also given us his life. Now, he not only atoned for your sin, but he also offers you his gracious life today. So let's live it. Live today in the light of your perfect cleansing. Live today in the light of what you have become because of what he's done. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Wherever the Gospel is preached, it'll either be received and welcomed or rejected and resisted. For some, it'll seem familiar and old, and for others, it'll seem brand new. Paul and Barnabas were being sent out, and the message about Christ was multiplying in the hearts of many. They were preaching to Jews primarily, taking them all the way back to Abraham and Moses—back through the exile, their deliverance from Egypt, through the wilderness, the institution of the Levitical and sacrificial system, through the prophets and kings. They took them back to something old and familiar. Out of this long story of God's people emerged God's man, the Messiah—God's man and his plan—Jesus, the one who would make the world right again. God sent his Son to give his life on behalf of the whole world. In his life, lived in perfect love, he fulfilled the law of God. He demonstrated absolute purity, holiness, righteousness, and justice. And then he died on a cross as a substitute sacrifice for us so that we might live. But he didn't just die for all—he was raised to new life for all. And now everyone can be freed from the penalty of sin and shame, from death and the grave. Now every human being can begin to walk in the new life given to them in Christ. This is the message they're preaching with all their heart and soul. And many are responding with joy. But many are resisting and rejecting this message. They resist because they had put their hope in their own piety and obedience to the law and not in God. But it's not only the pious who have a hard time with this—Christians have a hard time with this, too. Christians everywhere are tempted to trust in their own piety, their own self-effort, as a way to make themselves right with God. In the end, we end up frustrated, bitter, exhausted, and discouraged. It happens all the time. But this is not the message that we have been given. The message Paul was on fire to tell was that we are made right with God not by our own efforts or piety, but by what Christ has done for us. Ours is to believe, to say yes to what God has already done, and to walk in the power, the goodness, the joy, and the abiding presence of Christ himself. Live in the light, the strength, and joy of Christ in you. Be one who receives and rests in his life, not one who resists and rejects it. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul today. Let's embark on this soul-shaping journey together and open our hearts to where God's Word might lead us today. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It's all a gift. Peter finally comes to his senses. He finally realizes that he was not in chains anymore, that he was free. And he quickly and immediately realizes that it was the Lord who broke those chains and set him free. We are also told that the church was praying for him. And we can't help but draw a line between the people's prayers and Peter's dramatic deliverance. Somehow the church, through prayer, was able to participate with what God was actually doing. And for all this, Peter is quick to give God the praise and acknowledge that it is all from him. It's all a gift. This is so unlike what we hear from Herod. When people begin to praise and treat him and speak of him as if he were a God, he does nothing to correct them. He readily and gladly accepts their worship. As a result, he's struck with worms and he dies an absolutely horrendous, inglorious death. When we take the glory that is due only to God, we are not free. No, we are consumed from the inside out. Living for the glory of yourself won't bring life. It won't bring freedom. It will only bring death. No matter how splendid that life might appear. God is the source of all good in our life. He's the only one who has broken the chains humanity was bound to. He's the only one who has rescued us from the dark dungeons we've been sentenced to. He's the only one that sets us free. It's all a work of God, lest any of us should boast. So let's awaken from the fog like Peter did, standing in the middle of the street, suddenly realizing that God had done this amazing thing. That his chains were broken, the gates were opened, that he was walking out free into a new day. God had done it all. Let's awaken like Peter did, to see that God has done all of these things for us too. Let's make sure that we're like Peter and give God the glory for all the good that he's brought into our life. It's all from Him. Any victories that we might have experienced, any growth that we've known as Christians, any new insight or understanding of God's love, it's all a gift from Him. These are all from God, not of us, but they are all for us. For our joy, for our freedom, but for his glory. So let's live fully aware in the knowledge that God is the source of our freedom in life. He is the one that causes chains to come off. He is the one that walks with us into a new day. May this day be one where we honor him for all that he has done. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is the master builder—and we are his masterpiece. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by shadows. There was a mystery in how they followed me, mimicking every movement, always with me but never the real thing. Today in Exodus, we hear about Bezalel, the master craftsman who built the tabernacle: a structure made of gold, silver, and precious materials, carefully crafted, beautiful and spectacular. Yet, as remarkable as it is, it's just a shadow—a copy of something far greater, of the true temple in heaven. Bezalel's very name means "in the shadow of God." He worked under the shadow of a master craftsman even greater than himself—Jesus. Jesus is building a temple too, but not with gold and silver. He's using something more precious: people. You and I are living stones, carefully fit together, placed into God's house by his gentle and powerful hand. Christ is the master builder, building something beautiful out of our lives. As First Peter says, we are living stones, a spiritual temple, and holy priests offering spiritual sacrifices that please God. The craftsmanship of Bezalel is delightful; it's amazing and intricate. But the true reality, the masterpiece, is what Jesus is doing. He is making a home—a dwelling and meeting place for God and us—a place of forgiveness, renewal, and communion. It's not confined to shadows, but is alive and real in the life of Christ. So today, let's rejoice in the master creator who has made us a part of his very life. Let's not live merely in the shadow, but step fully into the reality of Christ. Jesus is building something wonderful, and you are included. Let's make our home in him; it's where we belong, it's where we're meant to be. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. TODAY'S DEVOTION: His life is for everyone, and he is impartial. Jesus' message of life is impartial and he has no favorites. It envelops everyone, regardless of nationality or political affiliation, race or gender. It doesn't matter. Jesus has come to undo all that was done in Adam. And everyone is included, even those we think are far beyond the pale of God's love. Don't call unclean what I have made clean is the message Peter was given. And Cornelius, in Peter's estimation, prior to this moment, would have been unclean. Even though Cornelius was a good man. As soon as Peter walks in the door, this good man was ready to fall down and worship Peter. Good people are falling down and worshiping the wrong things all the time. But God is revealing himself to good people everywhere. And the answer for all people, good or bad, is not, "Here's a list of good things that you must do in order to be made right with God." No, it's not transactional that way. It's not, "If you do this, then God will do that." No, it is a declaration of what God has done on behalf of all of humanity, good people included. It's not a sales pitch. It's good news and it's for everyone. And it must be proclaimed to everyone, even those you might think are unclean and far from God. That's what Peter is learning, and that's what is being declared. So let's be renewed in this gospel, this gospel of Jesus, this message of what God has done for us in Christ. Let's walk in his transforming power. He is the one who makes good people, new people; broken people, healed people; unclean people, clean people; and dead people, alive. He has done it all, and it is finished. That's the gospel, and it's for everyone, even me and you. So let's walk in it today. Let's rejoice in that today. And whatever appointment God has for you, be ready to respond. He's impartial, and his message envelops everyone. And you never know what miracle might be on its way. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see that. That I'll root myself in this declaration of what is—and what is, my friend, is really good. And that's a prayer for my own soul. That's a prayer for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's still there. The book is called Acts of the Apostles, and we're going to see a lot of the apostles in the days ahead, especially Paul and Peter. But the person we're going to see the most is Jesus. This book could be called the Acts of Jesus because he's still there with his followers, doing what he always does. But now he's moving beyond Israel and is outside the city of Damascus. He's about to do those things that we've seen him do. He's about to overwhelm one of his enemies with light and forgiveness and love. He'll blind Saul and transform him into Paul. He's on his way up into another upper room where people are mourning the loss of a generous-hearted woman named Tabitha. Peter's there in that room for sure. But the writer of this book doesn't want you to miss the fact that Jesus is there too. If this moment sounds familiar, it should, because it echoes back to Jesus in an upper room, the room of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, with his twelve-year-old daughter, a girl Jesus called Talitha. Both Tabitha and Talitha had passed from life to death. He's still doing what he always does. He's bringing life where there was once death. And he's here with us today too, doing now what he has always done. He's overwhelming our resistant hearts with his light, forgiveness, and love, opening eyes to see more and more just who he is, the way he did with Paul. He's also entering into the upper rooms of our hearts where there is death and a need for resurrection and hope. There he takes us by the hand and says words like, it's time to get up. It's time to live. He's still there doing what he does. He's bringing his light and forgiveness and love. And he's doing this all around the world, even today. In fact, he's in the room with you right now. Do you hear him? Do you sense his presence? Hear his word of forgiveness and light and love? Let him take you by the hand and raise you up to new life. Today. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. In fact, the ink hasn't even dried yet on this covenant agreement between God and his people before they go ahead and break it. And boy, do they break it. They break it in such grand fashion that it's almost comical. In fact, Moses even notes that the enemies of the people stand at a distance, amused. They saw this dark humor, that these people who had been delivered by God were abandoning him so early and worshiping a god made out of their own earrings. The treachery of the human heart is no laughing matter, however. And Moses pleads with God. He appeals to God, to the covenant promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, based on the relationship that he had with these people that he knew by name. He does not appeal to the covenant law. He doesn't appeal to God as judge. No. He appeals to his relationship and to the relationship he had with the three patriarchs which was established in faith. Abraham believed that God would make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, just like God told him. He believed that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through his seed, through his descendant. That a champion, a Messiah would come through him. And that this Messiah would transform the treacherous, law-breaking, idol-worshiping hearts of every human being. He would do it by invading our humanity and putting on flesh. He would accomplish what we could not do. He would remain faithful where we have been faithless. And he would offer himself as a perfect sacrifice on our behalf that we might have that relationship with God that we were created for, restored and renewed. And he would do this on behalf of all. And that includes you, my friend. He has come to draw you into his very life—the vicarious humanity of Christ. Christ being faithful where you have not been faithful. Christ being obedient when we failed to be obedient. Christ forgiving when we have failed to forgive. Christ being all in all on behalf of all. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see it. I'll catch a greater glimpse of that good news that Philip saw, of the good news that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob saw. That I will see it and that I will know his freedom and his joy. And that's a prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. We can be so buried and blinded by our story that we fail to see that we have been drawn into the story of God—a story of liberation, of freedom, a story of hope, a story of love. Stephen has shown us that all of history is pointing to Christ, who has come for all humanity to set us free from slavery and to make us his own. And Christ has given himself that he might drag all of humanity into the story that we were made for. So let us humbly agree and say thank you for what Christ has done, for what you have become in him. You are his child and you are free. So let us live in the light and the freedom of what God has done in Christ—for you, for me, for the whole world. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. The seemingly endless list of tabernacle instructions are so specific, so exact, it can leave a person wondering what it's all about. The tabernacle was a place where God would meet man in a unique way. It was an intersection between heaven and earth, between God and man. The covenant between God and his people was affirmed there. The stone tablets of the covenant were stored there in the ark. The lid of the ark was the place of atonement. All these things were taking place in the tabernacle. And we are told that the tabernacle was a pattern of things that were in heaven. The tabernacle helped tell the story of God, of his love and salvation that he brings to the whole world. This was an important place. These are important symbols. But it was only a shadow of something far greater, of things yet to come. It was a shadow of Christ. Christ came to be the intersection between heaven and earth. He came to tabernacle and dwell with us. He was the place of atonement—the person of atonement that takes away the sins of the world. In John 2:19, Jesus says, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." He's referring to himself there, his own body, because he's the fulfillment of the shadow we see in Exodus. We're not only reconciled to God through his body, he's also given us his life right here, right now. We see this in Stephen. He was full of the Spirit and wisdom, so full that his countenance is being lit up. He's dwelling, he's abiding in the tabernacle, if you will—in Christ. He's abiding in Christ at that very moment. And we too can experience this abiding life in Christ. We can abide in the greater tabernacle—in Him. We can live from this place of forgiveness in his presence. And we too can find the power for life and healing here and now. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see this through the shadows of these pages and that I will see it even through the shadows of day-to-day life, that I'll have ears to hear, eyes that are wide open to abide in the mercy and the grace of this given day, to abide in Him. That's the prayer that I have for my soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
