It was important that I interviewed my Mom, Anita Hall Mitchell, because both she and my sisters are my first recollection of generational cycles, nuanced dynamics between women, and humanizing people through the lens of grace regardless of their relation to me. Ms. Mitchell is so much more than just my Mother. She is a dynamic woman livin a full life, that has contributed to the world and lives that that extend beyond my family. The most resilient person I know. The most poised person I know. The biggest heart I have ever known. My very first lesson in duality and respectability politics. She has taught me via example who I do and do not want to be. As a Black woman born in the 50's to a single Mom, the fourth child of six children, the only girl, in the deep, rural South where the main road segregated the town, she has experienced adversities I hope to never face. And she survived. She taught me what she could and put me in positions to learn what she did not know. Let's humanize our parents. Respect their journeys. They did the best they could with what they had. Happy Mother's Day to the GOAT, Anita Hall Mitchell! Episode Three is with Dallas, Texas native Dorothy Nayles. Ms. Nayles is a 78 year-old retired social worker, whose life has taker her across the United States during pivotal historical moments, some of which she participated in, and a time of archaic societal norms (especially for women) that she often rebuked. Her shared experiences are much too grand for one episode, so the episode has been split into two parts. Part I drops TODAY for your week's end and weekend enjoyment. Part II will drop next week.
