Doulas of the Roundtable

What is selective bias, and how does it show up in our work as doulas? We all interpret and retain information in ways that align with our pre-existing beliefs, often unknowingly dismissing data that challenges our biases. From interpreting research to making decisions in birth spaces, selective bias can shape the care we provide and can influence the experiences of our clients. As doulas, we have a responsibility to recognize and confront our own biases, especially when it comes to topics like interventions and birth preferences. Are you open to thinking critically about your own biases, considering how they affect your practice, and exploring ways to actively seek out diverse perspectives?  Join us for an honest conversation about learning and growing in our doula practice, and how embracing discomfort can lead to more effective, unbiased support for the families we serve.

Today's topic is all things matrescence as we look at the book, Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. We will discuss the process of matrescence and the developmental steps that many people do not understand. Join us to learn more! Jessie Harrold is a coach and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over 15 years. She works one-on-one with women and mothers to facilitate mentorship programs, women's circles, rituals, retreats, and nature-based experiences. Jessie is the author of Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage and Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead. She also hosts The Becoming Podcast. Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada, where she raises her two children, writes, and tends the land. Show Highlights: What is matrescence? Comparisons between matrescence and adolescence (both transitions are processes that take time) Jessie's model of matrescence: The Four Elements of Radical Transformation: Earth – Orient yourself to what's true, and name the change. Water – (Think tears.) Grief over the self you were before this transformation is a normal part of transitioning to motherhood. Air – The liminal space of the “in-between” when you haven't fully integrated into the identity of being a mother. Fire – An igniting of the ember within you as you integrate into the identity of motherhood. This motherhood transition is an opportunity to let go of other things that aren't serving us well. Systemic factors that force women into “losing themselves in motherhood” The challenges we face in motherhood are part of the development into matrescence, but we still need the tools and resources to navigate them. “The Mother Powers”- the things that help us get through matrescence Matrescence is a beautiful process. In this snack-size episode of Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg checks back in with comedian and new mom Vicky Kuperman for a hilarious and refreshingly real follow-up conversation about those chaotic first weeks of parenting. Vicky shares how hiring a night doula gave her an elusive eight-hour stretch of sleep and why postnatal support might be the difference between loving your baby and loving having a baby. They swap notes on useless pediatrician advice, cry-trigger guesswork, and the loneliness of baby groups when no one gets your sense of humor. Vicky opens up about the mental fog of newborn care, the underestimated emotional load of having a dog and a baby, and how she and her husband navigate parenting roles—complete with night shifts, miscommunications, and moments of "I'm drowning!" clarity. Also discussed: musical enrichment guilt, measles-era isolation, baby smile myths, and why swaddling should really be a service for grown women. Vicky also shares that asking for help gave her just enough breathing room to start jotting down jokes again—proof that even a little support can make space for yourself to reappear.

Send us a textIn this episode of The Incubator Podcast, Ben and Daphna sit down with certified birth doula and lactation counselor Latoya Southwell for a wide-ranging conversation about the role doulas play in supporting families before, during, and after birth. LaToya shares her personal and professional path into birth work, and how her experiences shaped a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approach to supporting laboring people—particularly those from historically marginalized communities. The conversation covers what doulas do (and don't do), how they differ from midwives, and how they advocate for safe, informed, and emotionally grounded birth experiences. LaToya talks candidly about how she prepares clients for unexpected outcomes, including C-sections and NICU admissions, and how doulas can collaborate with healthcare teams rather than be in conflict with them. She also introduces the Baby Café initiative—an informal peer support network she co-founded to reduce isolation and provide postpartum support for new mothers—and explains why preparing families for postpartum is just as critical as planning for labor. This episode is a practical introduction to the real work of birth doulas—and an invitation to rethink how care teams can work together to improve outcomes and experiences for parents and babies alike. Her story is a reminder of just how important it is to stay flexible, stay informed, and to surround yourself with people who respect your choices.Whether you're expecting your first baby or simply interested in the birth world, this episode offers both inspiration and practical insight — especially for those wanting to understand how to advocate for themselves in medical settings.      Connect with Kirstin on:

Send us a textIn this episode, we speak with Rebecca, a mother of two from Perth, Western Australia. Rebecca shares her powerful and deeply personal birth stories — from her first homebirth to her second birth, a freebirth.Rebecca begins by taking us through her pregnancies, both of which were marked by hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) lasting up to 20 weeks. She opens up about the physical and emotional challenges of navigating pregnancy while managing HG.For her first birth, Rebecca chose a homebirth with the support of a private midwife, opting not to go through the Community Midwifery Program (CMP). She went into labor at 40 weeks and 6 days, and during labour, performed a forward-leaning inversion to help reposition her baby, who wasn't quite in an ideal position. She chose a managed third stage for this birth. With her second pregnancy, Rebecca decided on a wild pregnancy — choosing not to engage in routine medical care or monitoring — and ultimately had a freebirth. She experienced several days of prodromal labour leading up to the birth and gave birth to her second baby at 41 weeks and 6 days — on Christmas Day.Support the show@homebirthstoriesaustralia Support the show by buying us a coffee! In this episode of the Paddy Wagon Podcast, Mike welcomes Emily Hirsch, an aerialist, doula, and co-host of the Wine, Weed, Weird podcast.  Mike learns that in addition to being all of the above listed things, she also plays in competitive pool leagues and is a huge fan of...  Donald Duck? Emily brought a 1/3 of her podcast's title along for the ride and decided to get baked while Mike takes his normal sip of the potion, hits the three-wheel motion. We discuss the size of whale sperm, placentas, doulas being for more people than just hippies and of course... Do lesbians actually scissor?  Mike realizes he may also be gay during this episode when he's introduced to the idea of "friction is friction". As we reel it back in, we get to Emily's upbringing in the church and coming out, as she puts it... as a late-blooming lesbian.  We learn about being different, being judged and being accepted.  Emily walks us through her journey of self discovery, accepting herself and what advice she'd give to others as well as her younger self. Tune in for a fun one and a great chat with a truly kind soul. For the Love of Hormones- Christian Healthcare, Ovulating, Hormones, Get Pregnant, Miscarriage, Ovulation, PCOS Symptoms

Hey sisters! Today's episode is one I know so many of you need. Over the past few months, several women inside Fertility Framework have gotten pregnant (praise God!), and one of the first questions I always hear is: “Should I get a midwife or a doula?” Or sometimes it's, “Can I have both?” or “Do I need one if I already have an OB?” I remember being in that same boat—clueless about what a midwife even was—until I walked through miscarriage, healing, and finally pregnancy with our rainbow baby. That's when everything shifted for me. I started learning more about God's design, what natural birth could look like, and how to surround myself with the support I actually needed. Episode Highlights: What exactly is a doula (and what she's not)? What does she actually do during labor, delivery, and postpartum? How can a doula help you avoid unnecessary interventions? Why it matters to choose the right doula, not just any doula If you're someone who wants a faith-centered, low-intervention birth (especially if it's your first or you're planning a hospital birth), this episode is packed with truth, encouragement, and practical help to guide your decisions. And don't worry—we'll cover midwives vs. OBs in part two later this week! In Him, Bekah Resources & Links: ✨ I've put together a free faith-filled booklet to help guide you through this journey. It's called Faith-Driven Fertility, and it's full of practical steps and encouragement for trusting God while supporting your body for conception.

Episode 163: Communication – Intention vs Interpretation

Doulas of the Roundtable

As doulas, when it comes to communication, what we say and how it's heard are not always the same. Words shape how clients feel, respond, and make decisions. Asking questions that begin with "why" can unintentionally sound like judgment, even when your intent is neutral or supportive. Doulas often believe that it's our job to make sure clients are making informed choices. In truth, our responsibility is to our clients, not for them. It is not our role or responsibility to decide what a client wants or needs to know. But doulas often offer information without asking what the client wants to know or inquiring in a non-judgmental way how they came to a decision, especially surrounding topics like induction or elective cesareans. This episode unpacks the critical difference between what we mean and how our words are interpreted. If you want to strengthen your communication, reduce misunderstandings, and support clients with more clarity and compassion.
