It is common for partners to have different opinions about pregnancy, birth, or parenting. These differences can create tension, especially when decisions need to be made. As doulas, we play a vital role in navigating these situations with professionalism and care. It is important that we equip ourselves with strategies to support both individuals without taking sides. We can more effectively help them communicate by asking questions that invite open communication and help uncover the underlying values or fears behind each perspective. Understanding where each person is coming from creates space for empathy and problem-solving. Guiding partners toward common ground by encouraging collaboration and fostering mutual respect is critical. By remaining neutral and supportive, doulas can help families approach these challenges as a team rather than opponents. Join us for a practical conversation on how to maintain balance, build trust, and support healthy communication when clients and their partners see things differently.

What does it really take to have a good birth in a hospital? In this episode, I'm joined by Care Messer, Founder of the Birth Education Center in San Diego. She's a certified hypnobirthing instructor, a DONA-certified doula, and a childbirth educator who also trains doulas. Care teaches engaging, partner-friendly online classes that have helped many families prepare for birth with more clarity and confidence. We get into what it means to prepare early, why most women don't realize how much choice they actually have, and what it looks like to create a safe, grounded birth experience inside a hospital system. From power dynamics with providers to the small, practical things that shift your sense of safety, this conversation breaks down what women and their partners need to know before walking through those hospital doors. You'll Learn:Why choosing the right hospital and provider early changes everythingWhat it feels like to enter a system where you're treated as room number instead of a person giving birthWhy staying home longer in early labor can dramatically shift your hospital experienceThe surprising link between hospital C-section rates and NICU levelsHow eye masks, dim lights, and warm blankets keep your body in labor modeWhen partners step into the role of protector and advocate in the birth roomThe quiet damage of being a passive participant versus owning your birth decisionsWhy hospital classes often train you to be a “good patient” instead of giving you real optionsHow listening to birth stories helps you recognize and avoid common intervention cascadesTimestamps:[00:00] Introduction[03:00] How preparation and safety shape the hospital birth experience[09:22] Rethinking what safety really means in birth[13:01] Choosing the right hospital, provider, and birth team[20:20] The partner's role in protecting space and shifting power dynamics[36:37] Practical ways to protect labor hormones in a hospital birth[50:15] Arming with education and optimizing the hospital environment for laborResources Mentioned:Episode 65: All About VBAC pt.1: Perspectives from an OB, Midwife, and Doula with Care Messer | Spotify or AppleBirth Education Center | WebsiteBucky Eye Mask | AmazonThe Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. | Book or AudiobookMen, Love & Birth by Mark Harris | Book or AudiobookLabor Like A Goddess by Alexandria Moran and Lauren Mahana | BookBirth Psychology | WebsiteMorgan's First Birth | VideoLearn more about the Birth Education Care by visiting their website, YouTube channel, and Facebook page.Follow Care on Instagram, LinkedIn and listen to her Podcast on Apple or Spotify.Find more from Leah:Leah Gordon | InstagramLeah Gordon | WebsiteLeah Gordon | WebsiteFind more from Morgan:Morgan MacDermott | InstagramMorgan MacDermott | WebsiteUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 15% at RedmondFor 20% off your first order at Needed, use code HEALTHYMOTHERSave $260 at Lumebox, use code HEALTHYASAMOTHER

Are you tired of posting doula content that only gets likes from other birth workers instead of inquiries from pregnant and postpartum clients? You're showing up, posting, and trying to stay consistent—but the only people hyping you up in the comments are other doulas. And let's be real: doulas don't pay your bills. In this episode, I'm breaking down how to create doula content that actually converts followers into clients. We'll talk about why posting carousels on the stages of labor isn't enough, how to shift from textbook teaching to emotional connection, and how to use content pillars so you never have to wonder what to post again. You'll learn:Why likes and support from peers don't equal paying clientsThe exact types of content that attract pregnant women and new moms who are ready to hire youHow to share your values, process, and client transformations so mothers see themselves in your careWhy storytelling and myth-busting posts make you the go-to doula in your areaHow to confidently invite clients to book with you (without feeling pushy)If you're putting in the effort but still not booking clients, there's a disconnect—and we're going to fix it. Because doula marketing is about more than visibility. It's about connection, conviction, and conversion.

Choosing the right doula, midwife, or birthkeeper for your birth journey is more than just credentials and experience — it's about alignment. In this episode, we walk you through a heart-centered approach to choosing your birth team.We start with a self-inquiry activity to help you tune into what you truly need and desire as the first step before drafting your questions. Then, we'll guide you through sample questions to ask during interviews (yes, interviews!) . Think of it as creating your own little soul-led checklist — from practical things to deeper “how-do-you-hold-space-for-me” kind of vibes. And we couldn't talk about choosing the right person without pulling the Trump Card — your intuition. That quiet inner knowing often speaks louder than any resume. We'll share how to recognize those yes/no feelings and what to do when logic says one thing, but your gut says another.Whether you're birthing at home, in a center, or in a hospital, this episode is your reminder: you deserve to feel safe, seen, and sovereign in your choices.Grab a cup of tea, bring your journal, and let's explore how to find your people for this sacred chapter.Interested in knowing the difference between a doula, birthkeeper and Midwife, listen hereLast one week to apply for the extended Free GuideLink for the Free Childbirth Guide Support the showSign up for Childbirth Preparation Programs! visit https://birthagni.com/services#childbirth-preparation-programs https://birthagni.com/copy-of-services#breastfeeding-preparation-program This episode is supported and made possible by podcast recording and hosting tool Zencastr, it is impeccably made! I'm breaking down the 3 biggest mistakes doulas make in consults—1) The chit-chat trap2) The people-pleaser pitch3) The info-dump spiral...and how to fix each of them fast. You'll walk away knowing how to lead with confidence, sell with heart, and guide potential clients into saying yes without ever feeling salesy.Your consult isn't just small talk—it's the sales moment of your business. And if you're winging it? You're leaving money (and impact) on the table.
In this episode we hear from Kira, a thoughtful and articulate mum who shares her powerful VBAC journey after a previous caesarean. Kira's story is a beautiful reminder that an empowering vaginal birth after caesarean is possible, even when it involves induction and an epidural. She speaks candidly about her first birth which resulted in a caesarean and left her feeling disempowered and unheard. Determined to approach her second birth differently, Kira committed herself to learning, advocating for her preferences and creating a care team, including a doula, who respected her autonomy throughout her experience. Despite being induced and choosing an epidural for pain relief, Kira achieved the VBAC she had hoped for, on her own terms. She reflects on the key factors that helped her feel supported and in control throughout labour and birth, the education that completely shifted the way she navigated her second birth experience (even advocating for more time rather than being taken for a repeat caesarean, which led to her VBAC!) and shares insights that will be incredibly valuable to other women planning a vaginal birth.Kira's story is an inspiring reminder that there's no one 'right' way to have a vaginal birth after caesarean. What matters most is how you feel and are supported throughout the experience - this left her feeling strong, safe and seen as she birthed her baby powerfully and autonomously, making informed decisions every step of the way. Meal planning and preparation services can enhance the doula support options you provide to clients. However, doulas must consider regulations, logistics, and business implications before jumping in. Understanding the difference between meal planning and meal preparation is essential. Each service offers unique benefits for families. It is critical to understand the local cottage food laws and regulations in your community. These rules directly affect how and where meals can be prepared. It is also important to weigh the pros and cons of preparing meals in a client's home versus preparing them in your own when legality is not a factor in this decision. Tax implications, such as transaction privilege tax, are another factor to consider. These details can significantly impact the pricing and profitability of the meal services you offer. Join us for a practical conversation that explores opportunities, responsibilities, and business realities when offering meal planning and prep services.
VBACs are often dreaded in the medical system. Birth Centers are open to supporting them. This story is about a successful VBAC in a birth center, yes, but its not just that. It is about a woman trying to find her way back to herself, back to her Birth wisdom and her empowered self. It is also about how she feels she was treated during the experience. There is another very strong yet subtle emotional conflict that is happening and that is about a quest to have 'A Kind of Birth' because that seems to be the 'Only Right Way' and various realisations around it. The reflection is a beautiful journey a woman goes through and Birth's primary purpose is Evolution, a physical and emotional as well as spiritual growth that many women live through their individual experiences. We discussWhat 'Surrender' means during Birth? Why Birth becomes a transformative experience? The experience of Labor and the Mind Body ConnectionHaving a Doula as a First Time MotherThe kind of Birth Classes that helped the mother By the End of this Episode, you would have your own understanding of the emotional roller coaster ride that this journey was for her . You're showing up. You're posting every day. You've got the passion, the energy, the captions, the reels… and yet...your calendar is still wide open.Sound familiar? Here's the hard truth: consistency without clarity just makes you the unpaid educator of Instagram. Your content might inspire, but if it's not starting conversations, it's not converting. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the 3 silent booking killers that keep doulas stuck:Inspiration without invitation (posting pretty content that doesn't invite a response)Talking to everyone instead of your one (blending in instead of standing out)Hiding your sales process like it's a secret (confusing clients into doing nothing)We'll talk about how to fix each of these mistakes, how to use your content to spark genuine conversations, and why those conversations are the gold standard when it comes to booking clients. If you've been posting consistently and still wondering why no one is saying yes, this episode is your wake-up call, and your roadmap to turning posts into DMs, DMs into consults, and consults into paying clients. And if your consultations feel like the missing link, grab my life-changing doula resource: 3 Must-Ask Questions To Book Yourself Out Struggling to grow your doula business? Let me ask you something: Have you ever helped a child fall asleep after a nightmare or a stomachache? Have you ever held a friend's hand as they ended a relationship? Have you ever cheered on someone as they launched a bold new idea - scared, excited, not sure if they can do it? Then... you have been a doula. I know what you are thinking - "Isn't a doula someone who helps with childbirth?" Yes. But that is only one chapter of the story. A doula is someone who walks with you through a threshold - be it birth, death, transformation, identity shift, spiritual awakening, career change - any moment where you are no longer who you were... but not yet who you are becoming. This episode isn't just about the word "Doula." It's about the archetype. The sacred, universal role that we all carry - whether we realize it or not. Maybe you are the sister who always listened, the teacher who really saw your student, or the one in the friend group who makes everyone feel safe just by being there. Maybe you've even been your own doula - navigating the messy, beautiful in between of healing, shifting or starting over (um hello...empty nesters!!). Today, we are pulling that word out of the delivery room and placing it back into the hands of everyday people - because guiding someone through change is sacred work. And chances are... you've already been doing it. Welcome to Ascending Dawn Doula. Let's explore the role you didn't know you had! Watch: https://youtu.be/7z-Q-iLKHaQ

No text, no email, just crickets. If you've ever replayed a consult in your head like a crime scene, wondering if you said something wrong or if it was “the price,” this episode is for you. We're breaking down why ghosting after a consult hurts so much for doulas (hint: it's personal, not just business), how to reframe silence so it doesn't wreck your confidence, and the simple shift that makes following up feel natural instead of desperate.Because here's the truth: the real magic of follow-up starts way before the consult ever happens. And when you learn how to do it with curiosity and care, it turns ghosting into genuine connection — and connection into clients.Struggling to grow your doula business? "And people kept saying to her, well, why don't we have something like that in Ohio? Why don't we have something like that in Ohio? And so she never intended to start a nonprofit organization, but she got enough feedback that people really wanted to have the option to at least start working on it." Molly McMahon Graziano - Director of Outreach for Ohio End of Life OptionsWe're talking about the sensitive and essential topic of end-of-life options, an area many of us encounter as caregivers for family members, yet one that often leaves us searching for guidance and support. We sit down with two expert guests: Molly McMahon Graziano, Director of Outreach for Ohio End of Life Options, and Kathleen Carmody, owner of Senior Matters Home Health Care and Consulting, a certified death Doula and dementia practitioner. We explore the resources available for those facing terminal illness, clarify the distinctions between hospice and the evolving role of the death doula, and shed light on important legal and practical considerations. The episode also touches on the deeply personal nature of dying. And how, with the right knowledge and support, families can honor their loved ones' wishes while navigating the challenging end-of-life journey.Whether you're currently supporting someone at the end of life, considering how to start these tough conversations, or simply want to better understand the options available, this conversation offers practical insights, heartfelt stories, and a wealth of resources to help you plan with compassion and confidence.3 Key TakeawaysDeath Doulas Offer Practical & Emotional Support: Unlike hospice, death doulas can provide around-the-clock, highly personalized care for both the patient and family, addressing everything from hands-on support to legacy planning and navigating the complex emotional landscape that comes with losing a loved one.Empowered Choices Begin with Conversation: States differ widely in what end-of-life options are available, but the most important tool is open dialogue. Family discussions, advance directives, and clear communication about wishes ensure loved ones' preferences are heard and respected.Proactive Planning Makes the Hardest Times Easier: Start planning before a crisis. Resources like palliative care consults, practical tools (hello, Next of Kin boxes!), and organizations like Ohio End of Life Options and national groups (e.g., Compassion & Choices) are key to navigating care, easing burdens, and ensuring dignity for everyone involved. If you like this episode, please let us know. Jennifer Anderson, RN, experienced doula, Evidence Based Birth® Instructor, and member of Team EBB, returns to the podcast to join Dr. Rebecca Dekker in unpacking a new trend in labor induction protocols—starting Pitocin at higher doses and incorporating early artificial rupture of membranes (AROM). Drawing from her work with high-risk clients and firsthand experience inside hospital systems, Jennifer highlights how policies aimed at “optimizing” labor often prioritize speed over patient-centered care. Together, they examine what's in these new induction bundles, the evidence behind faster-moving protocols like dual-method cervical ripening and 4x4 Pitocin, and the importance of informed decision-making at every stage. Send us a textDoulas play a critical role in supporting women through childbirth—but their work is anything but easy, and their work isn't for the faint of heart. Many face disrespect from providers and routinely witness coercion, misinformation, and violations of informed consent. Even with their deep commitment to the women they serve, doulas often feel powerless in the face of hospital systems driven by profit and control. Still, many doulas are called to this work—and despite everything, they continue with resilience, purpose, and unwavering commitment.Doulas are indispensable. The evidence is clear: When a doula is present, C-section rates drop -- as do all other routine interventions. Physiologic birth is more likely. Breastfeeding is more successful. And most important, mothers walk away feeling more satisfied and supported. Doulas are, and always have been, the original birth keepers. Their presence makes birth safer, more humane, and more aligned with what women actually want and need.In today's episode, we hear directly from doulas about what they're up against—and why, despite it all, they keep showing up. We also share our reflections on what it means to support doulas as they continue this vital work.**********Our sponsors:Postpartum Soothe -- Herbs and padsicles to heal and comfort.Needed -- Our favorite nutritional products for before, during, and after pregnancy. A dedicated office space for a doula business can bring professionalism, visibility, and a central hub for meetings and classes. It can also come with significant costs and added responsibilities. Understanding the pros and cons is essential before making the investment. Calculating the potential return on investment provides a clear picture of whether it is a worthwhile investment. It is important to weigh costs such as rent, utilities, insurance, and furnishings. Compare them to potential income, client convenience, and growth opportunities. Carefully exploring these factors can reveal if an office space for your doula business will truly support long-term goals. It may also show if your resources are better used elsewhere. Join us as we discuss location evaluation, shared versus private spaces, and creative ways to maximize usage. Learn how to align your decision with your overall business strategy.

Have you ever wondered why that consult felt amazing… but still didn't lead to a yes? Here's the truth most doulas never hear: You're not losing the sale at the end of the call. You're losing it in the first two minutes. In this episode, we're cracking open the real reason your doula consultations might be falling flat—before you even get to your pricing, your packages, or your process.Because while you're asking, “Sooo… tell me about your pregnancy?” She's already deciding whether she trusts you—or whether she's bouncing. Here's what we're covering:Why the first few minutes of a consult determine the outcome of the entire conversationThe 3-question warm-up script that sets you up as the confident guide (without sounding like a robot)What most birthworkers get wrong when opening a sales call—and how to fix it todayHow to shift from small talk to leadership in a way that feels natural, not pushyWhy most doulas accidentally make the call feel like therapy (and how to create safety without spiraling into her life story)This is the consult warm-up strategy that'll change your entire doula sales game.
The messy magic of being a doula! In this episode of The Birth Geeks, we sit down with Dr. Andrea Ford, anthropologist, doula, and author of Near Birth, to explore the strange, powerful, and often contradictory world of modern birthwork. What even is a doula today? A sister or a professional? A rebel or a regulated service? A support system or a scapegoat? We unpack it ALL: The tension between respect and reimbursement Why doulas are praised for outcomes they can't control What happens when community care meets institutional demands And how birthwork quietly challenges American values about bodies, power, and autonomy If you've ever wrestled with your role in the birth space or wondered how being “near birth” is as political as it is personal, this conversation will hit home. Working with clients who hold status, whether they are medical providers, influencers, politicians, or public figures, can present unique opportunities and challenges for doulas. Supporting high-visibility clients while maintaining the same standards of care, boundaries, and intent you offer every other family may not come as easily as you think. While there are potential benefits of these connections, there can also be stumbling blocks. It can be tempting to hope for public praise or referrals from influencers, but doulas must not bank on that exposure or let it influence their role. Confidentiality is non-negotiable, and these clients deserve the same privacy, respect, and space to be vulnerable without fear of judgment. Join us for a candid and professional conversation about supporting clients with influence, while staying grounded in ethics, integrity, and the heart of doula work.
