A doula business plan is something most doulas never think to create. Many assume it's for bigger businesses, investors, or bank loans. Truth is, it isn't. A business plan is the document that tells you whether your pricing makes sense, if the right clients can find you, and if what you're building will last. Without one, most doulas are making decisions without a solid business foundation to build on. This conversation covers the traditional business plan structure, but adapted for doula work, the financial reality of what this work actually pays, and the pattern of adding certifications to try and get more clients instead of fixing the foundation your doula business is built on. A solid business plan doesn't have to be complicated. But it does need to be honest. If you've been winging it, or you are ready to get started, this is where you start.
In this episode of the Twiniversity Podcast, Natalie talks with Maddie Rahlf, a twin mom of three girls, about the "double whammy" delivery - giving birth to one twin vaginally and the other by C-section in the very same hour. Maddie shares how her twins were a complete surprise - a natural, spontaneous twin conception with no twins in the family, discovered at her 12-week ultrasound - and how reading Nat's book helped her find solid ground once the shock wore off. Because Baby B had a marginal cord insertion and was measuring under the 10th percentile, Maddie's pregnancy included weekly maternal fetal medicine (MFM) monitoring and an induction at 36 weeks. Natalie and Maddie walk through the delivery almost minute by minute: an easy vaginal birth for Baby A after only a few pushes, Baby B flipping transverse the moment she had the womb to herself, the attempts to turn her, a cervix that closed back up, and the placenta concern that finally made a C-section the safest call. Then comes the twist - it was Baby A, the vaginally delivered twin, who ended up in the NICU on CPAP, while Baby B stayed right with mom. The conversation also gets into recovering from a vaginal birth and major abdominal surgery at the same time, the empowerment of being given the choice to try for a vaginal delivery, and Nat's "use your BRAIN" framework (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing) for making decisions in the moment. Maddie's biggest takeaway: if it happens, it happens - you figure it out one day at a time, and you'll have a pretty cool story to tell. This episode is a reassuring, myth-busting conversation for any twin parent who feels anxious about the possibility of a double whammy delivery. EPISODE THEMES

In this episode, I'm getting painfully honest about something I think so many women silently experience…what happens when you slowly start abandoning yourself in order to be easier to love.I'm sharing the deeper story behind why I care so much about visibility, branding, self-expression, and helping doulas stop watering themselves down online — because this work has never really just been about Instagram bios or marketing strategy for me.It's about identity. It's about the years I spent believing I was too much: too emotional, too loud, too expressive, too ambitious, too visible. And how slowly — through relationships, conditioning, fear of judgment, and fear of rejection — I started shrinking myself without even realizing it.In this conversation, I open up about: ✨ my first marriage and how I lost myself in tiny edits ✨ the emotional cost of becoming “digestible” ✨ why visibility feels unsafe for so many women ✨ the surprising role dance played in helping me reclaim myself ✨ how self-expression impacts business, confidence, and magnetism ✨ why so many doulas struggle online even with “good strategy” ✨ and why the goal of branding is not to remove yourself from your message… but reveal yourself more clearlyIf you've ever felt like you need to tone yourself down to be accepted… If you've been hiding parts of yourself online… If your content feels flat, filtered, or emotionally disconnected…this episode is for you.And if you want support making your brand feel more human, emotionally connective, and memorable…I do offer personalized Doula IG Bio Audits where I review your bio, messaging, positioning, and first impression so your page actually sounds like YOU.Snag one here or DM me the word AUDIT on Instagram. Many neurodivergent people move through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum feeling misunderstood and unsupported in healthcare settings that were not designed with their minds in mind. You'll hear honest stories about real challenges: from finding backup and setting boundaries, to handling compassion fatigue, burnout, and the shifting landscape of client needs. Whether you've just finished your training or have decades in the field, this conversation offers candid insights and practical wisdom about staying in birth work for the long haul. If you've ever wondered how your own practice might change over the years, or what it takes to keep showing up for families, you're in the right place.
This episode kicks off a brand-new series on the Six Figure Doula Podcast all about visibility, personal branding, emotional connection, and what actually makes doulas unforgettable online.I'm breaking down why being the “best” doula doesn't automatically make you visible...I'm talking about: Why I think the doula industry has an “optimization addiction” The reason some doulas are unforgettable online while others blend into the background The moment I stopped trying to sound like my mentors and finally leaned into my own voice How my background in dance, sales psychology, and storytelling shaped my brand Why different creates emotional memory, and emotional memory creates clients This episode is vulnerable, bold, and probably a little uncomfortable at times… but it's the conversation I think the birth world desperately needs.Because your future clients cannot choose the version of you they cannot clearly see.And they definitely cannot remember the version of you that sounds like everybody else. ✨ And if you want help figuring out how your brand is actually coming across online, I'm offering my FREE IG Bio Audit where I personally review: your positioning your messaging your clarity and your first impression Spots are limited because I personally do these myself, so grab yours before they're gone. In this powerful conversation, Amy sits down with Erica Paulson, founder of Nurture, doula, trainer, and childbirth educator with nearly two decades of hands-on experience. Known for her integrative and compassionate approach, Erica is passionate about giving individualized, intentional support to help women feel truly seen, empowered, and cared for throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.Amy and Erica discuss the role of a doula during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. Erica clarifies that doulas are there as a guide and support system, not meant to take the place of a birthing partner - because they are important too! As a doula, advocating for your clients is key. Erica breaks down what true advocacy looks like as a doula, but also as a partner, family member, and birthing person. Erica is a wealth of knowledge and shares insight into how women can mentally and emotionally prepare for labor and early parenthood through education, prenatal bonding, and exposure to positive birth stories. Elaina is a wife, mom of three, personal trainer turned certified doula — and she showed up to this conversation mid-workout, mid-diaper change, mid-life. What unfolded was one of the most honest, grounded, and unexpectedly hilarious conversations about faith, motherhood, pelvic floors, and what it actually means to build a life that's working for you. In this episode we dive into:Why Elaina puts her husband before her kids — and the biblical reasoning behind that intentional orderThe vanity-to-survival shift in how she approaches fitness as a mom of threeWhat most OBs won't tell you about your pelvic floor — and why six weeks postpartum is not your green lightHow faith became the anchor that keeps her calm when the plan completely falls apartThe Myth of the "Set Apart" WomanThe cultural pressure on women to "have it all" isn't new — it was on the billboards before it was on InstagramWhy trying to be the boss girl kept Elaina feeling like she was falling short, even when she was succeedingHow motherhood didn't limit her identity — it clarified itThe real cost of putting your children above your marriage, and why even loving parents fall into this trapWhat Nobody Tells You About Postpartum FitnessWorking out for a flat stomach vs. working out to outrun danger — Elaina's mindset shift after becoming a momWhy your six-week clearance appointment is not permission to go back to your normal routineThe difference between good pelvic floor therapy and a generic stretch sheet — and why internal examination is the gold standardWhat it looks like to practice what you preach after years of teaching it to othersBuilding a Business in the ChaosWhy "we all have the same 24 hours" is a lie — especially for moms who haven't slept since 2020The flexibility vs. availability distinction that changes how Elaina runs her doula and training practiceWhy quality over quantity isn't just a business philosophy — it's a boundaryWhat it actually costs to produce the content you're comparing yourself to (hint: $7–10K/month)This conversation reminds us that the most unshakeable thing you can build isn't a brand or a business — it's a foundation. Whether you're a new mom trying to figure out how to take care of yourself while taking care of everyone else, a woman in her 30s rethinking what she actually wants, or someone just trying to roll with the punches a little more gracefully, Elaina's story is the permission slip you didn't know you needed.Looking for more on this topic?
The pressure to perform is so very real as a doula, and sometimes the fear is holding us back from being even better for our clients. In this episode we're getting real about why it feels so scary and how you can get over this hurdle as a doula.
This conversation is about what happens when your life doesn't go the way you planned, and who you become because of it.Mary Farrelly is a Level IV NICU nurse, doula, and nurse educator, and the founder of The NICU Translator and NICU Doula Academy. Through her work, she helps bridge the gap between the NICU and home by equipping families and support professionals with evidence-based education and compassionate, trauma-informed support. Mary is passionate about redefining the NICU experience and building a network of NICU-informed doulas who can walk alongside families before, during, and after a NICU stay.Tune in to hear Mary share her inspiring story. We talk about the grief of the dream that didn't happen… The identity shifts no one prepares you for… The emotional weight of working in the NICU… And what it really looks like to build something meaningful while navigating doubt, visibility, and the pressure of being “the one” people look to for support. This is one of those conversations that will make you reflect on your own path, your own voice, and the things you might be holding back. And if you're a doula sitting there wondering why your business isn't growing the way you thought it would…I want you to hear this:It's not because you're not good enough. There's a reason you're stuck...and we need to look at it honestly. That's exactly why I'm hosting a free live workshop:

One of my favorites episodes is with Susan Elliott, End of Life Coach and Doula. Susan talks candidly about her mother's death, and about all that hospice had to offer… but also what was missing. After her mother's death, Susan became a doula, and felt that there was so much that could have been added to the experience, for her, for her mother, and for all their family and community. What's missing in our experiences of end of life? How might we be supported in bringing more to these difficult times? Why do we know so little about what's missing? Listen and see if any of it applies to your experience. In this episode, Montréal based doula and birth photographer Barbara shares with us the stories of her two births. Her first child was born via an unwanted c-section. During her second pregnancy, Barbara declined several routine checks as the result of those checks could have prevented her from birthing at home. Her second child was born at home in a birthing pool and welcomed by Barbara and her partner, who was also in the pool. THIS IS PART TWO - Listen to part one hereCONTENT HEADS UP: This episode contains discussions of death, dying, end-of-life care, and sensitive topics related to mortality, including chosen suicide and medicalization of death and illness. Listener discretion is advised, especially for individuals who may find these topics distressing or triggering. Please prioritize your emotional well-being while engaging with this content. Also, Ali wants to note that when she asks Karen about her thoughts on suicide, she meant to make a disctinction between “chosen” suicide (when someone wants to live but they are in too much physical pain/their body is too deteriorated without hope of recovery) and “suicide under duress” (meaning due to emotional/psychological/spiritual pain, that may or may not be accompanied by an unavoidably dying body, the person does not want to live). Of course facing a death someone does not want can also be considered duress! SYNOPSIS:What does good acting and dying have in common? In this episode, Ali discusses all things death, dying, and living as bodies with Karen Bellone, Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. They focus on the interconnectedness of life and death, the significance of conscious living, and the complexities of end-of-life care. Karen shares her experiences working with dying individuals, highlighting the challenges of the dying process, including issues related to dementia and Alzheimer's. They discuss the importance of compassionate and holistic approaches to end-of-life care, emphasizing the need for conscious decision-making aligned with personal values to achieve a good death without regrets. Throughout the conversation, they reflect on the essence of embodiment and the importance of being present in the moment, trusting the intelligence of the body to embrace a richer life and ultimately a better death. ALI & KAREN EXPLORATION POINTS:- The concept of a 'good death,' this discussion emphasizes the significance of conscious decision-making and holistic approaches to end-of-life care, challenging societal norms and perceptions surrounding death. - The complexities, ethical considerations and medicalization surrounding end-of-life decisions, highlighting the need for open dialogue and support for individuals facing such choices.- The role of a Death Doula, illuminating the profound support and guidance provided by these compassionate professionals in assisting individuals and families through the dying process, fostering a sense of empowerment and comfort.- How our physical and emotional bodies communicate and play integral roles in the dying process, highlighting the importance of listening to and honoring the body's wisdom. - Insights into embracing conscious living, pursuing meaningful experiences, and aligning actions with personal values to cultivate a sense of fulfillment and purpose.- Sensory experiences shape our perception of life and death, emphasizing the significance of sensory elements in the dying process and fostering connections with loved ones.To be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website BODY MAPPING VIDEO LIBRARYPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course informationTransgenerational Healing FilmsMORE KAREN BELLONE:Film Website: Website: The Seventh Sense BIO:Founder, Doula, Educator: Karen Bellone, MFA, is a Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. For the very first time on Dam Parenting, both parents are here — together. Liam and Vivi join me to share not one birth story, but two. Two children, two completely different births, and a journey that shows what can happen when you stop being afraid to learn.Vivi is a Greek mum building her own community space in Amsterdam. Liam was previously on the podcast speaking about the vulnerabilities of fatherhood. Together, they talk about the real experience of preparing for birth in the Netherlands — hypnobirthing, doula support, the midwife-kraamzorg-doula team — and what changed between their first and second birth when they truly invested in preparation. This episode is about knowledge as power. It's about what a woman's body can do when she believes in it. And it's about the extraordinary role a partner can play. Two births. Both on their due dates. Both in the Netherlands. One family, transformed by learning. If you want to reach out to Vivi - you can find her at GreekMama on Instagram - she is always up to new nad wonderful things!Liam can be found as a supporting member of so many projects, including - Dads Do Art - Connecting dads & families through creativity and play in Amsterdam Nieuw West. Before you listen, please know this conversation includes pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and the emotional realities that come with it.If you're in a tender place, protect your heart first. You can come back to this when you're ready.I've been a bit quiet for a reason. Not because I didn't have anything to say…but because I was in the middle of something I couldn't rush to make sense of.In the last year, I've experienced two missed miscarriages. The first came with waiting...waiting for answers, waiting for my body to catch up, waiting in this space between fear and trust while making decisions I never thought I'd have to face. The second… was different.I knew. Before the ultrasound. Before anyone said a word. There was a quiet, undeniable instinct in my body that something wasn't right, and I tried to override it.This episode is about that knowing. The grief. The jealousy, guilt, and thoughts I didn't want to admit out loud. The experience of moving through a system that felt cold and disconnected from something so deeply human. And the identity shift that comes when you can't “fix” or control the one thing you want most. This isn't a lesson. There's no neat takeaway. No polished ending. This is me… in it.Processing what it means to hold both abundance and devastation at the same time.To build a life and business that's expanding, while navigating something that feels completely out of your hands. To trust your body again… and to become someone who can hold more, even when it hurts. If you've experienced loss…If you're in a season that doesn't make sense…If you've ever felt alone in thoughts you didn't think you were allowed to have.. you're not alone in this. And you don't have to rush your way out of it.Thank you for being here.
Black mamas deserve support — not just during birth, but before, during, and long after. It's Black Maternal Health Week and, in this powerful episode of The Mama's Den, we're joined by doula leaders Khefri Riley and Dr. Sayida Peprah-Wilson to talk about what it really means to be supported in your birth journey — emotionally, physically, and mentally. From breaking down what doulas actually do to unpacking the realities of giving birth on Medi-Cal, this conversation is both eye-opening and empowering. Because here's the truth: a beautiful, supported birth experience should not be a luxury — and in California, it doesn't have to be. We talk about: • What doulas do and why they matter for better birth outcomes • Why culturally aligned care is essential, not optional • Postpartum support, mental health, and why care doesn't stop after birth • The Medi-Cal doula benefit — and how it's changing access for Black families • The Medi-Cal Doula Hub and how to find support in your community • How advocacy and community are transforming maternal health in California As Khefri shares, “You can be autonomous in your experience… and you don't have to think you can't have that because you don't have money.” Whether you're expecting, supporting someone who is, or simply want to understand your options — this episode is a reminder that you have choices, you deserve care, and support may already be available to you. If you're enrolled in Medi-Cal in California, doula services are now covered — and could make a meaningful difference in your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. Everyone who comes through doula training asks the same question: how do I actually find my first clients? In this episode, Dr. Robin Elise Weiss and Dr. Hillary Melchiors cut through the anxiety around getting started and offer practical, grounded strategies for new birth and postpartum doulas who are ready to build a practice. The conversation covers everything from the psychology of feeling "ready" to the concrete mechanics of networking, social media, pricing, and contracts, and it does so in a way that will resonate with trainers and agency owners who field this question constantly. Robin and Hillary draw on their own very different origin stories, including Robin starting before the internet existed and Hillary stumbling into the work with a fresh PhD and a serious case of imposter syndrome, to make the point that there is no single right path to those first three births. What matters is telling people what you do, showing up consistently, building relationships with providers and other doulas, and not letting the pursuit of perfect paperwork or one more training become an excuse to delay. The episode closes with a clear-eyed discussion of pricing, shadowing, and the mindset shift from believing clients will find you to understanding that it is your job to be findable.
