Meal planning and preparation services can enhance the doula support options you provide to clients. However, doulas must consider regulations, logistics, and business implications before jumping in. Understanding the difference between meal planning and meal preparation is essential. Each service offers unique benefits for families. It is critical to understand the local cottage food laws and regulations in your community. These rules directly affect how and where meals can be prepared. It is also important to weigh the pros and cons of preparing meals in a client's home versus preparing them in your own when legality is not a factor in this decision. Tax implications, such as transaction privilege tax, are another factor to consider. These details can significantly impact the pricing and profitability of the meal services you offer. Join us for a practical conversation that explores opportunities, responsibilities, and business realities when offering meal planning and prep services.
VBACs are often dreaded in the medical system. Birth Centers are open to supporting them. This story is about a successful VBAC in a birth center, yes, but its not just that. It is about a woman trying to find her way back to herself, back to her Birth wisdom and her empowered self. It is also about how she feels she was treated during the experience. There is another very strong yet subtle emotional conflict that is happening and that is about a quest to have 'A Kind of Birth' because that seems to be the 'Only Right Way' and various realisations around it. The reflection is a beautiful journey a woman goes through and Birth's primary purpose is Evolution, a physical and emotional as well as spiritual growth that many women live through their individual experiences. We discussWhat 'Surrender' means during Birth? Why Birth becomes a transformative experience? The experience of Labor and the Mind Body ConnectionHaving a Doula as a First Time MotherThe kind of Birth Classes that helped the mother By the End of this Episode, you would have your own understanding of the emotional roller coaster ride that this journey was for her . It will help give you a direction on how you would like to approach your birth , Listen to your individual needs and desires .Births beyond everything needs Fluidity. You're showing up. You're posting every day. You've got the passion, the energy, the captions, the reels… and yet...your calendar is still wide open.Sound familiar? Here's the hard truth: consistency without clarity just makes you the unpaid educator of Instagram. Your content might inspire, but if it's not starting conversations, it's not converting. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the 3 silent booking killers that keep doulas stuck:Inspiration without invitation (posting pretty content that doesn't invite a response)Talking to everyone instead of your one (blending in instead of standing out)Hiding your sales process like it's a secret (confusing clients into doing nothing)We'll talk about how to fix each of these mistakes, how to use your content to spark genuine conversations, and why those conversations are the gold standard when it comes to booking clients. If you've been posting consistently and still wondering why no one is saying yes, this episode is your wake-up call, and your roadmap to turning posts into DMs, DMs into consults, and consults into paying clients. And if your consultations feel like the missing link, grab my life-changing doula resource: 3 Must-Ask Questions To Book Yourself Out Struggling to grow your doula business? Let me ask you something: Have you ever helped a child fall asleep after a nightmare or a stomachache? Have you ever held a friend's hand as they ended a relationship? Have you ever cheered on someone as they launched a bold new idea - scared, excited, not sure if they can do it? Then... you have been a doula. I know what you are thinking - "Isn't a doula someone who helps with childbirth?" Yes. But that is only one chapter of the story. A doula is someone who walks with you through a threshold - be it birth, death, transformation, identity shift, spiritual awakening, career change - any moment where you are no longer who you were... but not yet who you are becoming. This episode isn't just about the word "Doula." It's about the archetype. The sacred, universal role that we all carry - whether we realize it or not. Maybe you are the sister who always listened, the teacher who really saw your student, or the one in the friend group who makes everyone feel safe just by being there. Maybe you've even been your own doula - navigating the messy, beautiful in between of healing, shifting or starting over (um hello...empty nesters!!). Today, we are pulling that word out of the delivery room and placing it back into the hands of everyday people - because guiding someone through change is sacred work. And chances are... you've already been doing it. Welcome to Ascending Dawn Doula. Let's explore the role you didn't know you had! Watch: https://youtu.be/7z-Q-iLKHaQ

Have you ever felt a little nudge that maybe you were meant to support women in birth? Maybe you're the one who stays up late watching birth videos, fascinated by how God designed the body, secretly dreaming of being in the room one day. If so, this episode was made for you.In today's conversation, Karen pulls back the curtain on the realities of birth work — the beauty, the challenges, and the sacred calling of becoming a doula. She shares the struggles many doulas face, from burnout and being on-call to working in hospital systems that don't always support women's physiology. And she reminds us why women supporting women through life's biggest transitions is not only historical, but biblical.Tune in to hear:Why the average doula career lasts only two years — and how to prevent burnoutThe surprising origin story of doulas and how their presence was “accidentally discovered” to improve birth outcomesThe missing rituals of modern maternity care — and why women are crying out for community againThe biggest challenges doulas face today (on-call life, finding clients, hospital politics, and more)What it truly means to protect a woman's physiology, her power, and her voice in laborHow the vision of the Red Tent is reviving sacred sisterhood for doulas and birth workersJoin the waitlist for the Doula Mastermind: https://pain-free-birth.mykajabi.com/doula-certification-waitlist Connect with Karen:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/painfreebirthInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/painfreebirth/Spotify Podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/5zEiKMIHFewZeVdzfBSEMSApple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/pain-free-birth/id1696179731Website - https://painfreebirth.com/Email List https://pain-free-birth.mykajabi.com/website-opt-in

You know that gut-punch feeling when a consult feels like magic — she's nodding, laughing, vibing with you — and then… silence. No text, no email, just crickets. If you've ever replayed a consult in your head like a crime scene, wondering if you said something wrong or if it was “the price,” this episode is for you. We're breaking down why ghosting after a consult hurts so much for doulas (hint: it's personal, not just business), how to reframe silence so it doesn't wreck your confidence, and the simple shift that makes following up feel natural instead of desperate.Because here's the truth: the real magic of follow-up starts way before the consult ever happens. And when you learn how to do it with curiosity and care, it turns ghosting into genuine connection — and connection into clients.Struggling to grow your doula business? Jennifer Anderson, RN, experienced doula, Evidence Based Birth® Instructor, and member of Team EBB, returns to the podcast to join Dr. Rebecca Dekker in unpacking a new trend in labor induction protocols—starting Pitocin at higher doses and incorporating early artificial rupture of membranes (AROM). Drawing from her work with high-risk clients and firsthand experience inside hospital systems, Jennifer highlights how policies aimed at “optimizing” labor often prioritize speed over patient-centered care. Together, they examine what's in these new induction bundles, the evidence behind faster-moving protocols like dual-method cervical ripening and 4x4 Pitocin, and the importance of informed decision-making at every stage. Send us a textDoulas play a critical role in supporting women through childbirth—but their work is anything but easy, and their work isn't for the faint of heart. Many face disrespect from providers and routinely witness coercion, misinformation, and violations of informed consent. Even with their deep commitment to the women they serve, doulas often feel powerless in the face of hospital systems driven by profit and control. Still, many doulas are called to this work—and despite everything, they continue with resilience, purpose, and unwavering commitment.Doulas are indispensable. The evidence is clear: When a doula is present, C-section rates drop -- as do all other routine interventions. Physiologic birth is more likely. Breastfeeding is more successful. And most important, mothers walk away feeling more satisfied and supported. Doulas are, and always have been, the original birth keepers. Their presence makes birth safer, more humane, and more aligned with what women actually want and need.In today's episode, we hear directly from doulas about what they're up against—and why, despite it all, they keep showing up. We also share our reflections on what it means to support doulas as they continue this vital work.**********Our sponsors:Postpartum Soothe -- Herbs and padsicles to heal and comfort.Needed -- Our favorite nutritional products for before, during, and after pregnancy. You're losing it in the first two minutes. In this episode, we're cracking open the real reason your doula consultations might be falling flat—before you even get to your pricing, your packages, or your process.Because while you're asking, “Sooo… tell me about your pregnancy?” She's already deciding whether she trusts you—or whether she's bouncing. Here's what we're covering:Why the first few minutes of a consult determine the outcome of the entire conversationThe 3-question warm-up script that sets you up as the confident guide (without sounding like a robot)What most birthworkers get wrong when opening a sales call—and how to fix it todayHow to shift from small talk to leadership in a way that feels natural, not pushyWhy most doulas accidentally make the call feel like therapy (and how to create safety without spiraling into her life story)This is the consult warm-up strategy that'll change your entire doula sales game.
The messy magic of being a doula! In this episode of The Birth Geeks, we sit down with Dr. Andrea Ford, anthropologist, doula, and author of Near Birth, to explore the strange, powerful, and often contradictory world of modern birthwork. What even is a doula today? A sister or a professional? A rebel or a regulated service? A support system or a scapegoat? We unpack it ALL: The tension between respect and reimbursement Why doulas are praised for outcomes they can't control What happens when community care meets institutional demands And how birthwork quietly challenges American values about bodies, power, and autonomy If you've ever wrestled with your role in the birth space or wondered how being “near birth” is as political as it is personal, this conversation will hit home. Listen now.

To sum up this episode, I'd say: listen to learn all about Death Cafés from a seasoned facilitator! How does it work? Who attends? What sorts of things are discussed? And how can I find one near me? Pull up a chair at this conversation about Death Cafés – where talking about the end is just the beginning of a really lively conversation.
Working with clients who hold status, whether they are medical providers, influencers, politicians, or public figures, can present unique opportunities and challenges for doulas. Supporting high-visibility clients while maintaining the same standards of care, boundaries, and intent you offer every other family may not come as easily as you think. While there are potential benefits of these connections, there can also be stumbling blocks. It can be tempting to hope for public praise or referrals from influencers, but doulas must not bank on that exposure or let it influence their role. Confidentiality is non-negotiable, and these clients deserve the same privacy, respect, and space to be vulnerable without fear of judgment. Join us for a candid and professional conversation about supporting clients with influence, while staying grounded in ethics, integrity, and the heart of doula work.
The episode that reveals why mamas admire you, but don't hire you...You're showing up. You're posting consistently. You've got the passion, the presence, the energy. But if your dream client can't clearly answer “How do I work with her?”—she won't.This final episode in the Booked Out Energy series is a gut-punch of truth—and exactly what you need if mamas keep cheering you on but not hiring you. We're talking about The Clarity Gap—the sneaky but destructive sales killer hiding in plain sight in your doula business. It's what causes potential clients to love your vibe but scroll right past your offers. It's what keeps your doula marketing inspirational… but not profitable. And it's costing you inquiries, bookings, and income every single day.In this episode, you'll learn:What the clarity gap actually is—and how it shows up in your content, captions, and consultsWhy your audience might be confused (or overwhelmed) by your offer, even if they love your messageHow to shift from vague energy into bold, clear doula business messaging that convertsTangible examples of high-converting CTAs, bios, and offer pitches that work without being salesyHow to turn your doula Instagram strategy from “educational and admired” to “booked and banked”Because here's the deal: clients don't hire doulas they admire. They hire doulas they understand. So if you're tired of watching your content inspire people without getting you paid… this episode is your moment.

Hillary helps us learn how newborns experience their brand-new world —and how we as educators and doulas can help families understand them in ways they may have never been taught. Rather than seeing babies as a blob to be shaped, we can recognize them as fully formed people with unique needs. Transitioning from an internal dark, warm, water-filled home to the bright, ever-changing world can be quite an undertaking— but with our love and guidance, we can help them grow to their full potential, starting from the very first breath. Learning more about how we can teach this in a wonderfully sensitive way can change families' lives. About Hillary Hillary Menke, ICCE, is a childbirth and newborn care instructor with The Women's Clinic of Northern Colorado whose passion lies in the respectful, intentional care of very young children. She earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career working with infants through kindergarteners in the classroom. To deepen her understanding of whole-child development, she pursued Waldorf Teacher Training at Sound Circle Center, focusing on supporting children's growth beyond academics—nurturing what it means to be deeply, joyfully human. It was with the birth of her own little one and coming to grips with the awe-filled, wild ride of motherhood that this passion extended to the care of new parents in their journeys through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She earned her childbirth educator certification through ICEA and now helps families navigate this transformative time with evidence-based education and compassionate guidance. Her goal is to build confidence in parents as they care for their babies in ways that reflect their values, wisdom, and dreams. What You'll Learn: What current neuroscience reveals about how babies actually perceive the world Why educators need to role model respectful interaction with their “babies” in the classroom What the differences are between infant and adult brain waves How we can demonstrate ways for parents to empathize with their babies Why a parent's calm demeanor can change the interaction with baby How to teach ways to decode infant cues Why free movement is part of respectful infant care Hillary's Favorite Resources: Baby Bare by Stephanie Johnson The Nurture Revolution by Greer Kirshenbaum Unruffled with Janet Lansbury (Podcast) Anything from Magda Gerber or Dr. Emi Pikler Related Products from InJoy: Understanding Your Newborn Curriculum Understanding Birth Curriculum Understanding Breastfeeding Curriculum Educator Media Library Related Blogs and Podcasts from InJoy: Podcast: Season 9 Episode 2: Gentle Sleep Support with Sierra Brooks Contact Hillary at hillary.menke@gmail.com.

What is selective bias, and how does it show up in our work as doulas? We all interpret and retain information in ways that align with our pre-existing beliefs, often unknowingly dismissing data that challenges our biases. From interpreting research to making decisions in birth spaces, selective bias can shape the care we provide and can influence the experiences of our clients. As doulas, we have a responsibility to recognize and confront our own biases, especially when it comes to topics like interventions and birth preferences. Are you open to thinking critically about your own biases, considering how they affect your practice, and exploring ways to actively seek out diverse perspectives? Join us for an honest conversation about learning and growing in our doula practice, and how embracing discomfort can lead to more effective, unbiased support for the families we serve.

Today's topic is all things matrescence as we look at the book, Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. We will discuss the process of matrescence and the developmental steps that many people do not understand. Join us to learn more! Jessie Harrold is a coach and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over 15 years. She works one-on-one with women and mothers to facilitate mentorship programs, women's circles, rituals, retreats, and nature-based experiences. Jessie is the author of Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage and Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead. She also hosts The Becoming Podcast. Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada, where she raises her two children, writes, and tends the land. Show Highlights: What is matrescence? Comparisons between matrescence and adolescence (both transitions are processes that take time) Jessie's model of matrescence: The Four Elements of Radical Transformation: Earth – Orient yourself to what's true, and name the change. Water – (Think tears.) Grief over the self you were before this transformation is a normal part of transitioning to motherhood. Air – The liminal space of the “in-between” when you haven't fully integrated into the identity of being a mother. Fire – An igniting of the ember within you as you integrate into the identity of motherhood. This motherhood transition is an opportunity to let go of other things that aren't serving us well. Systemic factors that force women into “losing themselves in motherhood” The challenges we face in motherhood are part of the development into matrescence, but we still need the tools and resources to navigate them. “The Mother Powers”- the things that help us get through matrescence Matrescence is a beautiful process. In this snack-size episode of Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg checks back in with comedian and new mom Vicky Kuperman for a hilarious and refreshingly real follow-up conversation about those chaotic first weeks of parenting. Vicky shares how hiring a night doula gave her an elusive eight-hour stretch of sleep and why postnatal support might be the difference between loving your baby and loving having a baby. They swap notes on useless pediatrician advice, cry-trigger guesswork, and the loneliness of baby groups when no one gets your sense of humor. Vicky opens up about the mental fog of newborn care, the underestimated emotional load of having a dog and a baby, and how she and her husband navigate parenting roles—complete with night shifts, miscommunications, and moments of "I'm drowning!" clarity. Also discussed: musical enrichment guilt, measles-era isolation, baby smile myths, and why swaddling should really be a service for grown women. Vicky also shares that asking for help gave her just enough breathing room to start jotting down jokes again—proof that even a little support can make space for yourself to reappear.

Send us a textIn this episode of The Incubator Podcast, Ben and Daphna sit down with certified birth doula and lactation counselor Latoya Southwell for a wide-ranging conversation about the role doulas play in supporting families before, during, and after birth. LaToya shares her personal and professional path into birth work, and how her experiences shaped a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approach to supporting laboring people—particularly those from historically marginalized communities. The conversation covers what doulas do (and don't do), how they differ from midwives, and how they advocate for safe, informed, and emotionally grounded birth experiences. LaToya talks candidly about how she prepares clients for unexpected outcomes, including C-sections and NICU admissions, and how doulas can collaborate with healthcare teams rather than be in conflict with them. She also introduces the Baby Café initiative—an informal peer support network she co-founded to reduce isolation and provide postpartum support for new mothers—and explains why preparing families for postpartum is just as critical as planning for labor. This episode is a practical introduction to the real work of birth doulas—and an invitation to rethink how care teams can work together to improve outcomes and experiences for parents and babies alike.
