In this episode we're hearing from Annie about her amazing HBAC. This is Annie's second time on the pod so you might remember her first birth story; a lengthy induction that lead to a c-section. Today we're hearing how that experience heavily influenced the choices she made this time around. She knew that birthing at home would give her the best at the VBAC she wanted, so she gathered her support team, researched the risks of a vaginal birth following a caesarean, and focussed on building up trust in her body and her intuition. After a tough pregnancy filled with intense nausea and overwhelming exhaustion Annie's labour seemed to be beginning at 37 weeks, but what followed was 3 long weeks of tiring and mentally challenging prodromal labour. When the day finally came, Annie laboured steadily at home until the evening when things very quickly intensified and her daughter was born in the bathroom before the midwives arrived. She shares with us her experience of postpartum haemorrhage and subsequent transfer in to hospital and how despite not having the exact birth she imagined she feels really lucky with how it all went. In this episode of The Running Wine Mom, host Samantha Cieslinski sits down with the incredible Kristin Revere — founder of Gold Coast Doulas, co-author of Supported: Your Guide to Birth and Baby, and a fierce advocate for maternal health.Kristin shares her powerful journey from political fundraising to full-time doula work, building a values-driven business, and navigating the early parenting years with both compassion and grit. From birth plans and NICU surprises to pandemic pivots and postpartum advocacy, this conversation is both eye-opening and heartwarming.Whether you're a new mom, a mom-to-be, or just need to hear someone say “you're doing better than you think,” this one's for you.
Have you ever wondered why that consult felt amazing… but still didn't lead to a yes? Here's the truth most doulas never hear: You're not losing the sale at the end of the call. You're losing it in the first two minutes. In this episode, we're cracking open the real reason your doula consultations might be falling flat—before you even get to your pricing, your packages, or your process.Because while you're asking, “Sooo… tell me about your pregnancy?” She's already deciding whether she trusts you—or whether she's bouncing. Here's what we're covering:Why the first few minutes of a consult determine the outcome of the entire conversationThe 3-question warm-up script that sets you up as the confident guide (without sounding like a robot)What most birthworkers get wrong when opening a sales call—and how to fix it todayHow to shift from small talk to leadership in a way that feels natural, not pushyWhy most doulas accidentally make the call feel like therapy (and how to create safety without spiraling into her life story)This is the consult warm-up strategy that'll change your entire doula sales game.
The messy magic of being a doula! In this episode of The Birth Geeks, we sit down with Dr. Andrea Ford, anthropologist, doula, and author of Near Birth, to explore the strange, powerful, and often contradictory world of modern birthwork. What even is a doula today? A sister or a professional? A rebel or a regulated service? A support system or a scapegoat? We unpack it ALL: The tension between respect and reimbursement Why doulas are praised for outcomes they can't control What happens when community care meets institutional demands And how birthwork quietly challenges American values about bodies, power, and autonomy If you've ever wrestled with your role in the birth space or wondered how being “near birth” is as political as it is personal, this conversation will hit home. Listen now.

Welcome to The Doula's Guide To... Podcast, season 3 episode 13. Today I wanted to chat to you about something that I'm hearing people being told often - that inductions are risk free, or "not very risky". I wanted to break this down into different methods so this episode focuses on the balloon catheter and the risks associated with this form of induction.*Please note this podcast is not medical advice and not meant to influence your decision making process, it is merely to present you with more information to help you make informed decisions that feel right for you*Links mentioned in this episode:A snapshot of women's and clinicians' perceptions of the double balloon catheter for induction of labor: click hereWomenʼs reflections on induction of labour and birthing interventions and what they would do differently next time: click herePatient satisfaction with the cervical ripening balloon as a method for induction of labour: a randomised controlled trial: click hereRisk of maternal, fetal and neonatal complications associated with the use of the transcervical balloon catheter in induction of labour: click herePatient information leaflet: click hereReddit thread "Foley Balloon Induction Experiences": click hereClick here to find out more about my digital hypnobirthing courses: thedungareedoula.co.uk/onlinecourseUse code 'PODCAST' for 20% off my digital courses!Sign up for myFREE hypnobirthing masterclasses: click hereJoin my mailing list: substack.com/@meganmarybirthmotherLove the podcast? support me by leaving a tip via buy me a ko-fi:ko-fi.com/thedungareedoulaBook a Power Hour:calendly.com/thedungareedoula/power-hour?month=2024-02If you enjoyed the episode please give it a like, review and click follow so you never miss out!New episodes are out every Friday at 7am so stick around.Connect with me:thedungareedoula.co.ukinstagram.com/meganmarybirthmother
To sum up this episode, I'd say: listen to learn all about Death Cafés from a seasoned facilitator! How does it work? Who attends? What sorts of things are discussed? And how can I find one near me? Pull up a chair at this conversation about Death Cafés – where talking about the end is just the beginning of a really lively conversation.
Working with clients who hold status, whether they are medical providers, influencers, politicians, or public figures, can present unique opportunities and challenges for doulas. Supporting high-visibility clients while maintaining the same standards of care, boundaries, and intent you offer every other family may not come as easily as you think. While there are potential benefits of these connections, there can also be stumbling blocks. It can be tempting to hope for public praise or referrals from influencers, but doulas must not bank on that exposure or let it influence their role. Confidentiality is non-negotiable, and these clients deserve the same privacy, respect, and space to be vulnerable without fear of judgment. Join us for a candid and professional conversation about supporting clients with influence, while staying grounded in ethics, integrity, and the heart of doula work.

You've got the passion, the presence, the energy. But if your dream client can't clearly answer “How do I work with her?”—she won't.This final episode in the Booked Out Energy series is a gut-punch of truth—and exactly what you need if mamas keep cheering you on but not hiring you. We're talking about The Clarity Gap—the sneaky but destructive sales killer hiding in plain sight in your doula business. It's what causes potential clients to love your vibe but scroll right past your offers. It's what keeps your doula marketing inspirational… but not profitable. And it's costing you inquiries, bookings, and income every single day.In this episode, you'll learn:What the clarity gap actually is—and how it shows up in your content, captions, and consultsWhy your audience might be confused (or overwhelmed) by your offer, even if they love your messageHow to shift from vague energy into bold, clear doula business messaging that convertsTangible examples of high-converting CTAs, bios, and offer pitches that work without being salesyHow to turn your doula Instagram strategy from “educational and admired” to “booked and banked”Because here's the deal: clients don't hire doulas they admire. They hire doulas they understand. So if you're tired of watching your content inspire people without getting you paid… this episode is your moment.

Hillary helps us learn how newborns experience their brand-new world —and how we as educators and doulas can help families understand them in ways they may have never been taught. Rather than seeing babies as a blob to be shaped, we can recognize them as fully formed people with unique needs. Transitioning from an internal dark, warm, water-filled home to the bright, ever-changing world can be quite an undertaking— but with our love and guidance, we can help them grow to their full potential, starting from the very first breath. Learning more about how we can teach this in a wonderfully sensitive way can change families' lives. About Hillary Hillary Menke, ICCE, is a childbirth and newborn care instructor with The Women's Clinic of Northern Colorado whose passion lies in the respectful, intentional care of very young children. She earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career working with infants through kindergarteners in the classroom. To deepen her understanding of whole-child development, she pursued Waldorf Teacher Training at Sound Circle Center, focusing on supporting children's growth beyond academics—nurturing what it means to be deeply, joyfully human. It was with the birth of her own little one and coming to grips with the awe-filled, wild ride of motherhood that this passion extended to the care of new parents in their journeys through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She earned her childbirth educator certification through ICEA and now helps families navigate this transformative time with evidence-based education and compassionate guidance. Her goal is to build confidence in parents as they care for their babies in ways that reflect their values, wisdom, and dreams. What You'll Learn: What current neuroscience reveals about how babies actually perceive the world Why educators need to role model respectful interaction with their “babies” in the classroom What the differences are between infant and adult brain waves How we can demonstrate ways for parents to empathize with their babies Why a parent's calm demeanor can change the interaction with baby How to teach ways to decode infant cues Why free movement is part of respectful infant care Hillary's Favorite Resources: Baby Bare by Stephanie Johnson The Nurture Revolution by Greer Kirshenbaum Unruffled with Janet Lansbury (Podcast) Anything from Magda Gerber or Dr. Emi Pikler Related Products from InJoy: Understanding Your Newborn Curriculum Understanding Birth Curriculum Understanding Breastfeeding Curriculum Educator Media Library Related Blogs and Podcasts from InJoy: Podcast: Season 9 Episode 2: Gentle Sleep Support with Sierra Brooks Contact Hillary at hillary.menke@gmail.com.

What is selective bias, and how does it show up in our work as doulas? We all interpret and retain information in ways that align with our pre-existing beliefs, often unknowingly dismissing data that challenges our biases. From interpreting research to making decisions in birth spaces, selective bias can shape the care we provide and can influence the experiences of our clients. As doulas, we have a responsibility to recognize and confront our own biases, especially when it comes to topics like interventions and birth preferences. Are you open to thinking critically about your own biases, considering how they affect your practice, and exploring ways to actively seek out diverse perspectives? Join us for an honest conversation about learning and growing in our doula practice, and how embracing discomfort can lead to more effective, unbiased support for the families we serve.

Today's topic is all things matrescence as we look at the book, Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. We will discuss the process of matrescence and the developmental steps that many people do not understand. Join us to learn more! Jessie Harrold is a coach and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over 15 years. She works one-on-one with women and mothers to facilitate mentorship programs, women's circles, rituals, retreats, and nature-based experiences. Jessie is the author of Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage and Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead. She also hosts The Becoming Podcast. Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada, where she raises her two children, writes, and tends the land. Show Highlights: What is matrescence? Comparisons between matrescence and adolescence (both transitions are processes that take time) Jessie's model of matrescence: The Four Elements of Radical Transformation: Earth – Orient yourself to what's true, and name the change. Water – (Think tears.) Grief over the self you were before this transformation is a normal part of transitioning to motherhood. Air – The liminal space of the “in-between” when you haven't fully integrated into the identity of being a mother. Fire – An igniting of the ember within you as you integrate into the identity of motherhood. This motherhood transition is an opportunity to let go of other things that aren't serving us well. Systemic factors that force women into “losing themselves in motherhood” The challenges we face in motherhood are part of the development into matrescence, but we still need the tools and resources to navigate them. “The Mother Powers”- the things that help us get through matrescence Matrescence is a beautiful process. How do you go from spreadsheets to spinning babies, and end up on national perinatal boards? In this episode, Hillary sits down with LaToshia Rouse, a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and speaker who brings her whole self (and sometimes her whole family!) to the work of changing maternal care from the inside out. We talk about: Parenting triplets and how NICU life shaped LaToshia's why How doulas can support clients without overextending themselves What it really takes to build connections with hospital systems Why flexibility, strong boundaries, and knowing your season are everything You'll laugh, nod along, and walk away feeling like you've just made a new doula bestie.
In this snack-size episode of Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg checks back in with comedian and new mom Vicky Kuperman for a hilarious and refreshingly real follow-up conversation about those chaotic first weeks of parenting. Vicky shares how hiring a night doula gave her an elusive eight-hour stretch of sleep and why postnatal support might be the difference between loving your baby and loving having a baby. They swap notes on useless pediatrician advice, cry-trigger guesswork, and the loneliness of baby groups when no one gets your sense of humor. Vicky opens up about the mental fog of newborn care, the underestimated emotional load of having a dog and a baby, and how she and her husband navigate parenting roles—complete with night shifts, miscommunications, and moments of "I'm drowning!" clarity. Also discussed: musical enrichment guilt, measles-era isolation, baby smile myths, and why swaddling should really be a service for grown women. Vicky also shares that asking for help gave her just enough breathing room to start jotting down jokes again—proof that even a little support can make space for yourself to reappear.

Send us a textIn this episode of The Incubator Podcast, Ben and Daphna sit down with certified birth doula and lactation counselor Latoya Southwell for a wide-ranging conversation about the role doulas play in supporting families before, during, and after birth. LaToya shares her personal and professional path into birth work, and how her experiences shaped a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approach to supporting laboring people—particularly those from historically marginalized communities. The conversation covers what doulas do (and don't do), how they differ from midwives, and how they advocate for safe, informed, and emotionally grounded birth experiences. LaToya talks candidly about how she prepares clients for unexpected outcomes, including C-sections and NICU admissions, and how doulas can collaborate with healthcare teams rather than be in conflict with them. She also introduces the Baby Café initiative—an informal peer support network she co-founded to reduce isolation and provide postpartum support for new mothers—and explains why preparing families for postpartum is just as critical as planning for labor. This episode is a practical introduction to the real work of birth doulas—and an invitation to rethink how care teams can work together to improve outcomes and experiences for parents and babies alike. I finally connected with Carson Meyer, birth doula, mother and author of the gorgeous book "Growing Together; Doula Wisdom and Holistic Practices for Pregnancy Birth and Early Motherhood." While I know most of us have already gone through the portal of motherhood and birth, this book and Carson's gentle wisdom and spiritual orientation to life, birth and motherhood can expand our context for ourselves, our children and our role as mother. We talk about the many ways we Doula our emotions, those of our children, ourselves and each other, Spirit Babies, intuition, going back and seeing and repairing with the young mother within us, and orienting to the entire motherhood journey as a growth process for all of us. This was such a beautiful conversation and I highly recommend it for all of us!You can connect with Carson and her work here with early mothers and her book (I wish I had a pregnant mama to send it to and I absolutely will when I do!): https://www.carson-meyer.com/

Williams, a Provost Early Career Postdoctoral Fellow— whose research and lived commitment to maternal health equity provide powerful insight into how racism shows up in reproductive outcomes—and how we can begin to address it together.Dr. Williams also shares simple, actionable steps that non-Black individuals can take to become better allies, advocates, and co-conspirators in the movement for reproductive justice and maternal health equity.Episode Highlights:1. How to Move from Awareness to Action- This episode doesn't just ask you to care—it gives you real tools and resources to deepen your understanding, challenge systems, and support the journey toward reproductive justice for all.A Note From the Heart:This episode isn't about blame. Doula work can be incredibly rewarding, but it won't be the right fit for everyone. In this episode, we talk openly about why someone shouldn't become a doula. Birth work requires a specific mindset, skills, and responsibilities. Being judgmental, struggling to hold space, or expecting birth work to be all about personal fulfillment can create harm. Becoming a doula means running a doula business, and passion alone isn't enough if you're not prepared to market, manage, and sustain a professional practice. This honest conversation takes a raw and real look at what it takes to be a doula. It is essential to preserve the integrity of the profession and support future doulas in entering the work with clarity and intention. If you or someone you know is considering becoming a doula, this is a must-listen episode.
