In Episode 15 I talk about all things in the world of Will for the last week. In the spirit of last Monday being International Women's Day I did want to bring attention and shine a light on all the important women who have played significant roles in my life and shaping the man and husband and father that I become and continue to strive to be as I Grow in all those aspects of my life. I think empowering women and trying to figure out how I can help support is something I really want to explore further I'm not exactly sure what that looks like how I can be most helpful and impactful but it is definitely something I am interested in for a whole ton of reasons! That's probably a lot to do with my upbringing and having a strong mother and strong sisters and an amazing wife and daughter so I want to be a role model for my younger boys so that they can also learn and grow to be amazing young men, While supporting their friends and the women in their lives. I know that's a lot of rambling but I really just always feel inspired by the women in my life so I want to get back in anyway I can. I have of course a bunch of books this week but I would say a really good one for everyone to check out is the moment of lift by Melinda Gates. Also in the podcast world I would definitely check out Brené Brown's Dare to Lead, Episode two of a two part series with Dr. Susan David is really excellent I highly recommend it please check it out as well! Today I want to tell you guys about one of my favorite memories with my teammates.  I’m always looking for ways to push my leaders to the next level. So a couple of years ago, I took some of my top-level leaders to the Catalyst conference in California. It was actually a leadership conference for church leaders, but I believe what we do can mimic pastoral work! We also went and took trapeze lessons! I was so excited! What a fun way to push ourselves and try something scary!  This was LEGIT trapeze on Santa Monica Pier right on the ocean! You have to go through a safety course and everything! The first few times you climb up there and a trapeze artist throws you the swing and you have to catch the bar swing and go! Then they teach you how to drop properly. Then you get to do it again and you can wrap your legs around the bar and hang down and swing! The third time through you swing on your bar and the other trapeze artist grabs your legs and YOU LET GO!!! Whoa! I loved it! I love doing new and exciting things, but I also LOVE watching my friends and leaders do new and scary things! They had new confidence after that carried into their business and lives! Anytime you push yourself to do something hard, you GROW! We hear the phrase “comfort zone” all the time. And it’s lost its meaning after hearing it SO much! But really the growth does come when you’re out of your normal! I’m rereading the Secret Code of Sucess by Noah St. John which is an amazing book for growth! There are so many things he discusses that really hit home and make you think about where you’re holding back in your business. He brings up that instead of a “comfort zone” it’s really a “familiar zone”.  It’s what you’re used to! People have said to me “I can’t imagine ever doing public speaking” or “I could NEVER talk about something like that online”. But… THEY CAN! I did! Those were two things that were very unfamiliar to me. But man, did I GROW from them!  If they push themselves out of that familiar they could do ANYTHING they wanted to!  If you want to be successful you’ve got to do some things that aren’t familiar to you! I had Richie Nainaney on my Podcast - She is Co-Founder of Orikami Lab in Dubai, to be precise, I visited her studio. A studio like no other one - half white, half black, something for the eyes, where design is split in contrast, because for her it’s all about perception. Richie co-founded Orikami Lab in 2015 together with her Husband Hiten. I met her end of 2016 and got to know Orikami Lab as a Design Innovation Hub that uses Design thinking to simplify the problem and discover solutions with the people at its centre. Richie is truly a Designer and Entrepreneur mix, as her past work client says, she does not just focus on the design or the look of her work, she also emphasises on of how it feels. Richie chooses 5 chapters in her Chapters of My Life Book called “The Big Picture”. Chapter one, is actually a question: “When did I grow up to fast?” Where she gives an insight into her in young age, still quite mature and still serious childhood. Chapter 2 is about taking initiative and adopting change - she calls this chapter “Fluid Adaptation”. Chapter 3 called “Awakening” and yes it’s truly an awakening during her study life to understand that the education system is failing. But in particular, her short work trip to Brazil. There she first got in touch with Human Centered Design and seeing design as a way to impact people - a trip which was truly an awakening. With freelancing, her first clients and gaining further work experience as young Designer is about Chapter 4, which called “Tip of the Iceberg” where she also slowly realised she is more and more interested into the organizational, the logistics and managing part of a company. Next chapter is self-explained... it called “Wake the f***** UP” and yes it’s about the realisation of what lead her to co-found Orikami Lab. Enough said, it’s time to dig deep into Design thinking, Human Centered Design, Entrepreneurship and looking into the bigger picture of how to find your own language as a designer.
