Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to have back on the show for a second time: Ritualistic, religious and child sexual abuse survivor and overcomer, social media whistleblower and content creator, therapist and educator, award winning and renowned fashion designer, founder of Tarese Estelle Couture and Birds With a Feather, plant parent, passionate speaker and writer, and an incredible DID system sharing their story with the intent that others know they aren't alone and that hope is possible: Tarese Estelle & Co Born in Sydney, Australia, and soon swept into the isolated strictures of rural Queensland, Tarese grew up as the eldest of eight siblings in a high-control offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist Reform Movement. Her family believed they were among the chosen 144,000 souls destined for heaven, while the rest of humanity faced damnation. Life was governed by rigid doctrine: no birthdays, no Christmas, no play on the Sabbath, strict veganism with only two meals a day, modest dress codes, and homeschooling that kept them far from the “worldly” outside world. The family lived on a desolate property, hours from the nearest church, deepening their isolation. As her mother battled debilitating illness and slept through much of the day, young Tarese carried the weight of caring for her siblings while enduring a childhood stripped of joy and normal connection. Physical punishments were severe and frequent, and the sounds of her younger siblings' screams burned into her memory, leaving her feeling helpless and terrified. Sexual abuse occurred at home and extended to others over the years. Dissociation became her silent guardian, turning horrors into distant fragments viewed as if through a wooden fence.Yet light pierced the darkness - and that is what we will discussing today and where we left off in Part 1. In 2009, at 18, Tarese stepped through the doors of Destiny Haven in Newcastle - a sanctuary of unconditional love where volunteers poured their hearts into healing broken women. From that foundation, her wings unfolded. She studied fashion design, launching stunning collections that have been featured in iconic magazines, collaborated with renowned artists, dressed cultural icons, and powered poignant campaigns, runway shows, scholarships, and ambassadorships. Social groups help people find community and connection Nearly one in six people globally are lonely, and every year about 871,000 deaths are linked to loneliness, according to the World Health Organization. But making friends as an adult can be difficult. Social isolation spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, and even when communities reopened, many people never fully rebuilt their social circles. In 2023, former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said that a lack of social connection can be as harmful as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, citing increased risks of heart disease, depression and premature death. Higher rates of loneliness were also found in communities of color, the LGBTQ+ community and in migrants. Wednesday on the "Sound of Ideas," we're talking about how people are pushing back against that trend by finding creative, unconventional ways to build community and make meaningful connections here in Northeast Ohio. Guests:- Brittany Marchetti, Founder, First Round Cleveland- Abigail Thomas, Creator and Co-Leader, Yap Out Yonder- Eileen Callahan, Member, Cle Gals Book Club- Rebecca Maxwell, Founder, She's Company "Godmother of Fashion" honored at Kent State University Twice a year, fashion designers converge in Manhattan for a weeklong display of what's new in wardrobe. But it was not always this way. We have the woman who has been dubbed the “godmother of fashion” to thank for this, Fern Mallis, who is being inducted into the Kent State University School of Fashion Hall of Fame this week. Mallis is famous for creating New York Fashion Week, with its predecessor event, "7th on Sixth," and getting fashion designers to collaborate and show up in the same space at a time when that was unheard of. Mallis was the Executive Director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1991 to 2001, later serving as Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion. She has interviewed the greats as host of the "Fashion Icons" series at the 92nd Street Y such as Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Betsey Johnson, Valentino and Diane von Fürstenberg. Now, the “Sound of Ideas” gets to ask her the questions. Mallis will be speaking about her career and the fashion industry in general at the KSU School of Fashion's annual Hall of Fame lecture on Friday, May 1 at 11 A.M in the university's Rockwell Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. Guest:- Fern Mallis, 2026 Inductee, Kent State University School of Fashion Hall of Fame
Northeast Ohio experts explain how to plant trees and grow the region's canopy Wednesday is Earth Day, and it's a chance to show appreciation for the environment right outside our front door. For many of us, that starts with the trees in our own yards. Trees cool our homes, clean the air, manage stormwater and even boost property values. But across Northeast Ohio, they're currently under threat. In Cleveland, the urban tree canopy is estimated to be around 18%, well below the roughly 30 to 40% coverage experts say is ideal for a healthy city. Akron's tree canopy sits around 35%, but coverage is uneven. Some neighborhoods are lush and shaded, while others have far fewer trees, leaving residents more exposed to heat and environmental stress. Wednesday on the "Sound of Ideas," we're talking about what that means for residents. We'll learn how to care for the trees you have, when it's safe to tackle projects on your own and when it's time to call in a professional. We'll also dig into the bigger picture: why our regional tree canopy is declining and what's being done to restore it, including the work of a federally funded group in Akron, Project ACORN. Guests:- Tom Schreiber, Senior Manager of Community Forestry, Western Reserve Land Conservancy- Jessica Glowczewski, Watershed Superintendent, City of Akron How the fashion industry impacts our health and our environment, and what can be done to change it for the better As you think about what you're wearing at the moment, do you know what material or materials your outfit is made from? What about how you're supposed to wash it? Is it dry clean only? Are you supposed line dry it, or can you finish it in your dyer on tumble dry low? And when you're done wearing it for the last time, whether it can be recycled? You might not know the answers to all of these questions off the top of your head, but they make a big difference to our environment, and our health. If you did know more about what you're wearing, how it's produced, what it takes to keep it clean, and what can happen to it when you're done with it, you just might make different choices when it comes to your wardrobe. In the second half of the program, we'll learn about the environmental impact of the fashion industry with experts from different corners of this world who are trying to change it for the better. Editor's note: During the course of our conversation, the threshold for activating California's SB 707 “Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024” for producers of textiles was misstated. To clarify, the producer volume threshold is $1 million USD and over, not under. Guests:- Gargi Bhaduri, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Kent State University School of Fashion- Lisa Goldsand, Founder, Circular Thrift- Gail Baugh, Author, "The Fashion Designer's Textile Directory"

During the episode, we discuss how Charlotte transitioned from a successful career as a fashion designer to wedding photographer, her unconventional journey through the creative industries, and her commitment to shooting almost exclusively on film in an increasingly digital landscape.Full Show Notes - http://www.bytomw.com/podcast/from-fashion-designer-to-photographerCharlotte grew up in Paris and came to the UK at 15 to learn English. She studied fashion design and ran her own fashion brand from ages 23 to 30, getting picked up by Opening Ceremony and selling internationally. After leaving fashion due to sustainability concerns and unsustainable business costs, she transitioned to running a manufacturing studio for designer brands and costume work. A pivotal moment came after a friend's funeral in Scotland, when working with a career coach helped her realize she needed more creative freedom. Initially resistant to wedding photography—seeing it as "cheesy"—she discovered Naomi Koenig's film documentary work, which completely reframed what wedding photography could be.Her entry into wedding photography was organic. She shot her first wedding as a guest at her best friend's sister's wedding, and the experience rekindled her excitement about life and forced her to be truly present. Her early projects gained traction thanks to referrals from friends in the creative industry, leading to multiple features in Vogue. She has just completed her first full season and is now heading into her second.

In 2012, Daniella Kallmeyer began her eponymous brand with $7,000 and a goal to create a line of elevated wardrobe staples. Fifteen years later, her ethos remains the same and she's getting her flowers for the brand she's built—in fact, this year Kallmeyer was nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. On this episode, Daniella discusses bootstrapping her brand, what it was like in the room at the CFDA awards (hint: Rihanna was sitting next to her), and why she credits so much of her scrappiness to her time spent ghost-designing for QVC.

Before Jamie Haller launched her namesake shoe and apparel brand, she worked behind the scenes in the fashion industry in corporate retail. In the 2000s, she designed pieces for big brands of the era like Wet Seal, Guess, and Bebe. After learning the ins and outs of fashion production at a macro level, Haller left the corporate world to work for smaller brands where she had more creative control over her work, allowing her to hone her style as a designer. During the pandemic, she wanted to venture outside of what she knew and landed in a different realm of design: home renovation. Her eye for fashion translated well in the world of interiors, allowing her to gain clients quickly and make a name for herself in the space. Haller's love for trying new things also led her to a new category of fashion she hadn't yet conquered: shoes. In 2020, she launched her namesake shoe line and released her now-famous penny loafer style that has become an everyday staple for countless fashion insiders. She later returned to her roots when she expanded into apparel with a line she created with women like her in mind. Today, she's brought the many skills and talents she's acquired over the years together with her first storefront in Montecito, California, where you can shop her brand in an intimate space she designed herself.

Today it's very stream of conscious bonus mini episode. I've been thinking about Phoebe Philo's brand a lot lately. It's a brand with pieces that I am very attracted to. And, being someone interested and intrigued with how brands market themselves, there's definitely a lot that piques my interest about Philo. One thing that often gets my attention is the brand's approach to social media; it's so chill, almost like they - the brand, as well as the models showing the clothes - could care less. What we see are women simply getting on with their lives, while wearing Phoebe Philo and we get to watch.Ahead of the much-awaited Collection D, dropping early 2026, I wanted to talk and write about what I enjoy about Phoebe Philo, so I figured I'd put out a mini podcast and write it all down on Substack too. So if you prefer to read these words and see the accompanying images head straight to thecharissereport.substack.com – you can read it for free just please be sure to subscribe!Wherever you're listening, do please subscribe to or follow the show so you never miss another episode of The Charisse Report.Next up I've got an epic fashion month round up for you! We've been to London. We've been to Paris. We've been to Milan. And for this episode, we're rounding out the “Big Four" and taking the podcast to fashion week in New York! To help tell this story we're handing the hosting duties over to a familiar voice—our de facto fashion field corespondent—Vice President Fashion Director at Nordstrom, Rickie De Sole. Rickie takes the reins and dives into the history and influence of New York on the fashion industry with special guest Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA—the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The CFDA has been in charge of organizing New York's fashion week calendar since 2014, and notably have been instrumental in promoting and guiding established and emerging American designers. While in town, Rickie will also visit our Nordstrom New York flagship store to connect with a few more of our merchant leaders and discuss the kinds of experiences that you'll find when you walk through our doors during fashion week. And on top of all that, Rickie will also take us backstage after the Tory Burch show to meet briefly with Tory and give us a sense of how she's feeling about her collection. Joseph Abboud, legendary menswear fashion designer, joins Sid to discuss the death of Giorgio Armani. Abboud reflects on Armani's unmatched influence in fashion, his humility, and the lasting impact of his work. He and Sid Rosenberg discuss men's fashion, the decline in dressing well since COVID, and the importance of tailoring and personal style. Abboud notes that younger generations, like Sid's son, can help revive appreciation for fashion. The discussion turns to New York City's challenges—crime, retail decline, and the mayoral race—with Abboud strongly supporting Curtis Sliwa as someone who understands and will fight for the city's fashion and retail industries. He emphasizes his deep ties to New York, refusing to leave despite its struggles, and ends with reflections on stereotypes, creativity, and friendship with Sid. Learn more about your ad choices.
