Brooklyn-based Ben Curtis, former guitarist for Secret Machines, created his own electro-pop outfit, School of Seven Bells, in 2007. With his mastery of the guitar, piano and stand-up bass, Tom Freund could be his own one-man band. The experienced musician taught himself, picking up and playing whatever was around. Though his lineage includes two country music legends, Shelton Hank Williams III, usually referred to as Hank III, prefers to pave his own way. The self-described "hellbilly" melds a touch of grandfather Hank Williams Sr.'s old-fashioned country ways with a punk attitude. Michigan native Anya Marina may have started out spinning other people's music as a radio DJ at in San Diego, but now the indie songstress looks for her own creations to permeate the airwaves. Since hitting open-mic nights with her quirky mixture of melancholy songs and silly, spot-on impersonations, Marina has released several popular works, including her 2005 album, "Miss Halfway," which caught the attention of Alexandra Patsavas, the cutting-edge music supervisor for powerhouse shows "Grey's Anatomy," "The O.C." and "Gossip Girl," among others. Singer/songwriter Matt Costa had two interests growing up in Huntington Beach, CA: the guitar and the skateboard. After first going with the more thrilling of the two, Costa turned pro before suffering a leg break and subsequent marathon surgery that sidelined him indefinitely. Thanks to that unfortunate injury, Costa's inner musician reemerged and he began churning out songs as a coping mechanism. Nashville alt-rock trio The Gabe Dixon Band has been around awhile--nine years to be exact. Formed while its members were in college at the University of Miami and led by singer/songwriter/pianist Gabe Dixon, the group enjoyed a short run on the Warner Bros. label before record company reorganization ensued and their deal went south. The 88, an LA-based indie-rock group featuring singer/songwriter/guitarist Keith Slettedahl, keyboardist/songwriter Adam Merrin and drummer Anthony Zimmitti, have been inundating the local music scene since their formation in 2003.
