Nine Hidden Lives by Robert Gold Secrets only survive in the dark When journalist Ben Harper is asked to help re-examine an unsolved murder case from thirty years ago, he immediately agrees. It's not just that the victim was also a journalist, murdered after she'd published a series of shocking interviews with victims of domestic abuse. It's also that he understands all too well the need of victim's daughter, Doctor Uma Jha, for answers. But it's not long before their investigation leads to threats being made on Uma's life. Ben needs to unravel this crime before it's too late, but instead he finds himself tangled in a web of lies and deception. After all, a crime like murder has implications for many people. People who have been keeping secrets for thirty years, and will do whatever it takes to protect them. Strangers in Time by David Baldacci Fourteen-year-old Charlie Matters is up to no good, but for a very good reason. Without parents, peerage, or merit, he steals what he needs, living day-to-day until he's old enough to enlist to fight the Germans. After barely surviving the Blitz, Charlie knows there's no telling when a falling bomb might end his life. Fifteen-year-old Molly Wakefield has just returned to a nearly unrecognizable London. One of millions of children to have been evacuated to the countryside Molly has been away from her home for nearly five years. Her return, however, is not the homecoming she'd hoped for as she's confronted by a devastating reality: neither of her parents are there. Without guardians and stability, Charlie and Molly find an unexpected ally and protector in Ignatius Oliver, and solace at his bookshop, The Book Keep. Mourning the recent loss of his wife, Ignatius forms a kinship with both children, and in each other they rediscover the spirit of family each has lost. But Charlie's escapades in the city have not gone unnoticed, and someone's been following Molly since she returned to London. And Ignatius is harboring his own secrets, which could have terrible consequences for all of them. As bombs continue to bear down on the city, Charlie, Molly, and Ignatius learn that while the perils of war rage on, their coming together and trusting one another may be the only way for them to survive. On our most mildly controversial pod yet, Ben asserts the theory that Ben Harper is single handedly responsible for unintentionally ruining Australian music. Meanwhile, Ione shocks Miranda July with her bisexuality, and we explain why Oasis are the most generous pop stars of the modern era. We also touch on Dave Navarro's body modification kink, why Pete Hegseth's group chat mistake is very relatable, wonder whether we should we care that 23andMe have our DNA, and why no one seems to be drilling holes in their heads as a bio-hack anymore. To delve deeper into our world visit us at https://weirdertogether.substack.com/

Over the past three decades, A.J. Croce has established his reputation as a piano player and vocal stylist who pulls from a host of musical traditions and anti-heroes — part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul. From his 10 studio albums, it's clear that he holds an abiding love for all types of musical genres: Blues, Soul, Pop, Jazz, and Rock n' Roll. A virtuosic piano player, Croce toured with B.B. King and Ray Charles before reaching the age of 21, and over his career, he has performed with a wide range of musicians, from Willie Nelson to the Neville Brothers, to Béla Fleck and Ry Cooder. A.J. has also co-written songs with such formidable tunesmiths as Leon Russell, Dan Penn, Robert Earl Keen, and multi-Grammy winner Gary Nicholson. His albums have all charted on an impressive array of charts: Top 40, Blues, Americana, Jazz, College, and Radio 1. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter has landed 22 singles on a variety of Top 20 charts.  His songwriting and style has evolved from Jazz & Blues on his debut and sophomore albums, to the roots-rock of the more recent collaborative recordings like Cantos with Ben Harper, Twelve Tales with Allen Toussaint, and Just Like Medicine with Vince Gill. He recently toured with his show "Croce Plays Croce" where he paid tribute to his father, singer/songwriter Jim Croce.

He plays guitar and writes songs for Craig's Brother, he tours and plays guitar in The Cloverhearts, he's played in Brookhurst, This Legend with Ben Harper of Yellowcard fame. I became aware of Steven's music in 2003 when I first heard one of his first bands Hey Mike. We were on the same record label briefly and that was Takeover Records. Steven and I discuss a lot in this conversation, and it was so fun to do it. We discuss songwriting, creativity and even AI.

Pearl Jam's short Australia/New Zealand is underway, and the next stop on the map is Melbourne! It's a city that has a very rich history with this band featuring countless of classic shows from the early 90's. Due to special Patreon request, this week we are covering the 2009 show. It's a different setlist than what we covered from Auckland last week, but we'll dig into more Backspacer deep cuts, crowd friendly moments and Ben Harper collaborations. Some of you may know Javier's frustration with 2009 from a sound perspective, how they were using tube amps that did not aid some of the intricacies that Stone and Mike add to specific songs when they play. We'll have a good long discussion on how all of that works from both the technical and non-technical POVs, and present examples of songs it benefits and others that it doesn't. We have some great moments in this set to get into including Indifference and Red Mosquito with Ben Harper, Throw Your Arms Around Me with Liam Finn and a version of Porch that unleashes the best of Stone Gossard. Pearl Jam goes back on the road this week, and for the first time in ten years, they are making stops in Australia and New Zealand! The run will begin in Auckland, which is where our episode this week took place in on the 2009 Backspacer tour. Thanks to our Kiwi friend, Chris Warne, for putting in this episode request through our Patreon. He'll have info on some fun stuff going down at the shows, including the post-game reaction spots. This show offers a very unique OTOTO performance that you'll only get when touring the country. With the help of Neil and Liam Finn, there's an excellent performance of a song called Not Given Lightly by local legend, Chris Knox. We'll spend good time on this rarity that you may not have heard before. Other big highlights include one of the best versions of Severed Hand you'll ever hear, an amazing version of Faithfull, the uber rare Hold On played for only the second time, a fired up main set closing with Better Man and Red Mosquito featuring Ben Harper on slide guitar. All that, and we prepare for the upcoming tour starting this weekend! Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include:  Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". Having completed nearly 200 gigs with JD Fortune via the Switch Album Tour over 2006-2007, INXS took a much needed break in 2008 to recharge the batteries and contemplate further new chapters in their career post Michael Hutchence. Amidst, a temporary falling out with JD, the band reunited with long term Manager Chris Murphy after a 14 year hiatus from band duties. With a renewed focus to move the band to a brand, the bank found inner inspiration when jamming in the studio during 2009 deconstructing old songs with new arrangements. As such, the idea to re-record some well known and unique deep cut INXS tracks was born with the idea of inviting select singers, DJ's and world music artists to lend a hand. A unique initiative rarely taken by a band and one normally reserved for tribute acts. With Jon Farriss and James Ash (Rogue Traders Founder) spearheading the production duties, the band put together an ambitious, creative and artistically successful album that avoided being a simple rehash or rebooting of existing soundscapes. With guest contributors including Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Pat Monahan (Train) and Nikka Costa, the album manages to incorporate modern production, excellent musicianship and soaring vocal performances imbuing a sense of celebration and admiration for INXS' songs. The album undoubtedly did in 2010 and now in 2024 challenge ardent, stoic and rusted on fans whose ears may be permanently etched to the sounds of the original songs, however as we have said on many occasions, “listen without prejudice” and you'll be in for a rare musical experience. we also have a poll running on our Facebook page. So cast your votes on your top 5 songs off this album there.  Love and peace ✌️ https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/

The Blind Boys of Alabama are a legendary American gospel group founded in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. Originally called the Happy Land Jubilee Singers, the group consisted of mostly visually impaired students who found solace and inspiration in singing together. The original members were Clarence Fountain (baritone), George Scott (baritone and guitarist), Johnny Fields (bass), Velma Traylor (tenor), and Olice Thomas (baritone). Though the lineup has changed throughout the years, with none of the original members remaining, the core mission of the Blind Boys of Alabama has stayed consistent: creating uplifting and powerful gospel music. The Blind Boys of Alabama are credited with pioneering a unique approach to gospel, incorporating elements of soul, blues, and R&B into their sound. Their music has resonated with audiences for decades, and they've achieved incredible success, including: Winning six Grammy Awards Being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Receiving the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts The Blind Boys of Alabama have also collaborated with a wide range of artists from various genres, including Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and Ben Harper. Brace yourself for one of the wildest musician stories you've ever heard. Amarillo, Texas' Hayden Pedigo makes gorgeous fingerstyle guitar music inspired by the likes of Will Ackerman and John Fahey. But Hayden has broken every mold imaginable when it comes to his career in music.  The son of a truck stop preacher, Hayden worked at local Amarillo banks, recording music after-hours and aggressively reaching out to his music heroes to see if they wanted to collaborate (they often did). He finally ditched the life of a bank teller, got signed to indie label Mexican Summer, and - thanks to a quirky internet video - found himself running for Amarillo city council (he came in second). As if that wasn't unique enough, at some point, Gucci spotted him and recruited him to be in a fashion show.  Stranger still, here's a working musician with a guitar and string endorsement deal (Yamaha and D'Addario) and an NPR Tiny Desk concert under his belt whose only touring to date has been opening for big indie acts like Jenny Lewis and Devendra Banhardt. We talk about growing up in Amarillo, his Opus acoustic guitar, his recent signing to Yamaha, and so much more. You'll love it and you'll love Hayden's unique approach towards his art. Matt Sweeney downplays his success as a guitarist and producer to the fact that he simply says "yes" to a lot of projects. Whatever the case; it's working. After playing in Chavez, he performed as Superwolves with Will Oldham and served as a guitarist-for-hire on numerous acclaimed albums, including Cat Power's 'Covers' record and the Rick Rubin-produced Johnny Cash 'American Recordings V' and 'VI.' Matt is also one of the greatest guitar interviewers around. His Guitar Moves series, originally produced for Vice's Noisey channel in 2013, set a high bar for how to interview musicians. Like the late Anthony Bourdain, Matt is total rock & roll, but also approachable, funny and curious. Most importantly, he gets his subjects - including Keith Richards, Blake Mills, and Billy Gibbons - talking.  After a long hiatus, Matt has decided to take ownership of Guitar Moves, share old installments, and record new episodes. On this week's episode, we talk about how it's all about fingerpicking (thanks to his friend Sam Dylan of Supreme Dicks), his plans for Guitar Moves going forward, the old Richard Thompson instruction video (YouTube link) that served as the show's inspiration (and that Richard himself hated), and so much more. Be on the lookout for a feature on Matt in early 2024 in the pages of the Fretboard Journal.
