In this episode, we talk with Colorado's Holly Lovell as she was enjoying some off time with her family in New Zealand. We visit about how she developed her vocal chops, seasons or writing and making what you're capable of in the moment as to not stifle your creativity.     Indie folk singer/songwriter Holly Lovell released her album Hello Chelsea to the world on February 7, 2025. The album was produced in Eau Claire, WI with Brian Joseph (Bon Iver).   Holly Lovell, crafts songs that capture aching intimacy and vulnerability through perceptive storytelling. Using a mix of both acoustic and electric guitar, Lovell's alternative folk style songs are delivered with strong melodies and spirited conviction. She has been influenced by the lyrical prowess of artists such as Patty Griffin, Brandi Carlile and Bruce Springsteen.  Lovell's vocals have been likened to both Maggie Rogers and Ingrid Michaelson ‘but with far more gumption.' says The Denver Post, ‘She understands her songs and the power behind the lyrics. It's personal for her, for her band and every person that listens.'   Check Holly out here:  Website: hollylovell.com  IG: Hollylovell_  Facebook: Holly Lovell  TikTok: Hollylovell_   And check out Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters here: https://sweetbloomcoffee.com/

Send us a Text Message. The woman known in her performances as Shanna in a Dress (you can learn the story of her real name by seeing her live) started her musical journey at the University of Virginia, where she learned how to play guitar for the first time. She says teaching herself guitar was how she procrastinated studying while working towards a kinesiology major with a concentration in exercise physiology. An Ingrid Michaelson concert she saw expanded her horizons as to what a live concert could entail, and the big reveal of her new desire to be a singer-songwriter came as a result of secretly building up a repertoire of original material and finding the right time to perform it live.In the end, she invited all of the friends and family she could to her university's concert hall, not telling them what she would be doing on stage, but strongly encouraging them to attend. She recalls around 80 people showing up, saying that the first show set up hallmarks of the shows to come: funny songs mixed with heartfelt songs, a variety of instruments, a planned encore, and participation from the audience. The Notebook (Schoenfeld Theatre, Broadway) - ★★★★ REVIEW

Mickey-Jo Theatre Reviews

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2024 29:13

As part of Mickey-Jo's trip to New York, he got to catch THE NOTEBOOK at the Schoenfeld Theatre, a new musical adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel. Check out his ★★★★ review for his thoughts on this emotive musical and where it lets the rain in a little... The three-time Tony Award-nominated musical The Notebook, one of the most cherished contemporary love stories, is on Broadway starring 2024 Tony nominees Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett. The Notebook started as a 1995 bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, which was then adapted into a 2004 fan-favorite movie starring Academy Award nominees Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Now, Ingrid Michaelson sets the timeless story to music: the indie singer-songwriter contributes original music and lyrics that breathe new life into the story of lovers Noah and Allie. A Broadway alum, Michaelson appeared as Sonya in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812; now she returns as a first-time Broadway creative. In The Notebook on Broadway, an elderly man reads a romantic story to a female patient in a nursing home. The chapters that follow unlock a breathtaking love story, whisking the patient and the man back to their youth and providing the details that, as they age, will tragically connect them. Decades earlier, Allie and Noah were star-crossed lovers: Military drafts, family ties, and opposing classes all threatened to separate their love, but they have a once-in-a-lifetime relationship that endures for decades. Two Broadway powerhouses direct this new production, which premiered at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. His songs have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Maren Morris, Alison Krauss, Jon Pardi, Ingrid Michaelson, Brothers Osbourne, and many, many others. In one of the podcast's most illuminating guests to date, Barry discusses his unusual path to success — he didn't move to Nashville until he was 38 — and how his approach to collaboration has evolved through the years. He also digs into a couple of the details for some of his best known co-writes, like “Daydrinking” (Little Big Town) and “God and Country Music” (George Straight), and is quick to sing the praises of his frequent collaborators — Lori McKenna, Luke Laird, and Natalie Hemby, among others. This intro doesn't do justice to the caliber of the conversation we had. Barry is full of insight, wisdom and humility. You just gotta listen.

She also has songwriting credits for Panic! Jenny has always been an artist who is not afraid to show her whole self: good and the bad. Case in point: She described the inspiration for her very first break-through song "Fuck Was I" as "horrible, horrible, horrible decision making," adding it was "just your classic love gone wrong hell." Never one to back down from a fight, Jenny's approaching these songs with honesty, bravery and her biting sense of humor. Frank Viele's brand of New England blues rock tugs at the heartstrings, pulling the listener on a surprise journey that transcends genre.Yet even as he's racked up accolades over the past 7 years — including New England Music Awards for Album of the Year, Male Performer of the Year, Songwriter of The Year (X2), and Live Act of The Year for gutsy, gritty tracks like “Broken Love Song” and “‘Til The Bourbon's All Gone” — he's rarely paused to savor the moment before moving on to yet another tour, album, or collaboration. It wasn't until the pandemic hit in early 2020 and he was forced to hunker down that Viele realized that time itself was the world's most precarious, yet precious, resource. At that time, Viele embarked on a writing-and-recording journey with Jimmy Nutt (Jason Isbell, American Aquarium, The Dead South) and James LeBlanc (Travis Tritt, Will Hoge, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Dylan LeBlanc, Kid Rock, Rascal Flatts) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Within this co-writing collaborative partnership, Viele approached each new song slowly, intentionally, and with an open mind, challenging himself to transcend the limits of genre and industry expectations. In 2021, a handful songs that he had started recording in Connecticut, and finished at Nutthouse Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, were brought to life in the 2021 EP “Time Is A Thief.”  This EP won him the coveted New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” for the second time and acted as a prequel to Viele's upcoming full-length 2023 album. In January 2023, the first track off Viele's forthcoming, 13-song album completed in Nutthouse Recording Studios, “Hearts We Left Behind”, came out in January of 2023 and was featured on Boston's Country 102.5 as their “Song Of The Week”.  “Hearts” continues to receive critical acclaim citing Viele's strength as a storyteller and his signature vocal delivery. The “magic dust” they are referring to has been gathered from experiences on the road and in venues across the country.  Viele built his sound and narrated his journey while constantly touring the United States, playing hundreds of shows each year and sharing the stage with artists such as John Waite, Jeffrey Gaines, Lee DeWyze, Zach Myers of Shinedown, Bob Marley's Wailers, Howie Day, Xavier Rudd, Ingrid Michaelson, Tony Lucca, Pat McGee, and Blues Traveler, among others, since the release of his first solo album in 2015.But Frank Viele's musical journey starts long before that… Fondly listening to his grandmother play piano as a child and later reinvigorated as a teenager inspired by his older brother's taste in music and an acoustic guitar he left behind when he moved to the West Coast, Viele developed a deep appreciation for a wide range of genres including rock, blues, folk, and country. He began writing his own music as a teenager and quickly developed a knack for crafting deeply personal and emotive songs that spoke to the human experience. After honing his craft fronting New York City based Jam/Funk/Rock Outfit “Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project”, Viele released his debut solo album “Fall Your Way” in 2015, which was met with critical acclaim including 2 New England Music Awards for Album of The Year and Male Performer of The Year.  (On top of the Live Act of The Year Award he had received in 2014).The Album, “What's His Name?” won Frank Viele the New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” which paved this Connecticut musician's path to Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he began the next chapter of his writing and recording journey. Viele's music is characterized not only by his powerful vocals, soulful guitar playing, and poignant lyrics, but also its deep honesty. This is an artist who is not afraid of wearing his heart on his sleeve, and dig deep into the joys and struggles of life. He has been praised for his ability to blend elements of folk, blues, and

In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012.   As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more.   A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood).   Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more.   Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself.   Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth.   Learn more about your ad choices.
