6-time Ryder Cup player Padraig Harrington recalls the preparation required to position himself to contend and ultimately win major championships. Much of this episode is devoted to Padraig recounting his three major championships that came in quick succession beginning with the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie where he changed drivers after 36 holes and prevailed over Sergio Garcia in a 4-hole playoff. Padraig came into the 2008 Open Championship at Birkdale with a wrist injury and he didn't hit a full shot that week until the first round. It turned out to be a comfortable 4-stroke win over Ian Poulter. It was at the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills where he barely made the cut before firing rounds of 66-66 on the weekend to best Garcia and Ben Curtis by two shots. Season 5 begins with an amazing interview. This interview is only the second time I have had a guest on for a second interview. Why a second one you ask? After 34 years as a teacher and coach in Tallmadge City Schools Mr. Jon Shomo has retired. Mr. Shomo has certainly cemented himself into the history of Tallmadge High School as both a teacher and coach. As a coach Mr. Shomo has had quiet the journey. For 9 years he was an assistant coach for the women's softball team. 5 of those years they made it to the state final! He was the very first "official coach" of the women's golf team when it transitioned from a club sport to a varsity sport. He coached basketball for a few years. And he has also spent the last 20 years as the men's golf coach at Tallmadge High School. Mr. Shomo has viewed his role in the classroom as one of a coach as well. For years Mr. Shomo has been teaching government, US history, economics, and a few other "social studies" classes. There are so many former students who love history because of him, vote because of him, and have gone on to become teachers because of him. In this interview Mr. Shomo shares with us again who inspired him to become a teacher, and the advice he has for anyone aspiring to become a teacher or beginning their career in any field. For 34 years Mr. Shomo has impacted lives as a teacher, coach, colleague, mentor, and friend. Help me honor his career by listenting to this episode and learning more about this legend of a teacher. Mr. Shomo...THANK YOU for your time in the classroom and your time at Tallmadge High School. This week is the Open Championship, which means it's the last golf major of the PGA season. It also marks the 20th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship as a 300-to-1 long shot. When Ben Curtis hoisted the Claret Jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. This was an interesting episode we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since this is the week of The Open Championship. Lastly, I must admit I'm biased when it comes to Ben Curtis since he is a fellow Kent State Golden Flash alum. He is also doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org. SHOW NOTES: Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship on his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017. He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio. In today's episode, we discuss: Winning The Open Championship as a rookie Getting married and playing a PGA event on the same day The mental approach to golf Starting a foundation to help alleviate child hunger … and so much more!!! Watch the clips we recorded from the “tequila and tongue tie” conference in Scottsdale on our instagram @themunchbunchpodcast We had a blast. It was good food, good hotel, awesome pediatric dentists, and a heck of a dance party fiesta. So in lieu of a full episode we got clips on our instagram so you can go watch them there. This conference was unique because it was all about the Waterlase by Biolase. It's a hard tissue and soft tissue laser, so it can do anesthetic free fillings and release tongue and lip ties. We learned so much about the Waterlase, did you know it is 5 times less heat than a CO2 laser? It is also a very clean looking wound, less charring and thermal reaction. On our Instagram there is clips from the lives we did and you can see the speakers talking. The speakers were Dr Ben Curtis from Texas, Dr Trudy Frazer from Georgia, Dr Cherish Leung from California, Dr Amanda Hankins from Arkansas, Dr Lynda Dantzer from Colorado, Dr Leslie Blackburn from Texas. Do you want to be famous or do you want to be an actor? Very few truly achieve both. For most of us it's a choice, and the direction we choose impacts the roles and opportunities that we pursue going forward. Today's guest has been presented with both during his career and came to discover which one mattered more to him. Bettering Ourselves, Bettering Our Careers (Part 3) In the early 2000s, Ben Curtis was training to be a serious actor at NYU, but one commercial audition for Dell computers completely changed the trajectory of his life and career. He became the face of the computer company, performing in about 26 national commercials over the span of four years. Ben shares with us the lessons he learned from reaching a level of fame that he never imagined, but he also talks about how it led him down some dark paths that took him years to resolve and come out of. 02:28 - Welcome and Ben talks about coming to NYC 06:02 - Story #1: Becoming the Dell Dude 11:01 - The business of commercial acting 16:34 - When Ben realized he was "famous" 21:31 - Story #2: The reality check of getting arrested 33:55 - Story #3: Surviving 9/11 through drugs and alcohol 41:14 - Lessons he has learned and now shares with other men Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes OR Make a one-time Donation to the podcast ---------- Why I'll Never Make It is hosted by Off-Broadway actor and singer Patrick Oliver Jones and is a production of WINMI Media, LLC. He wants to shed light on how we overcome these odds, the tools that we can use for self-care and sur-thrival, all while growing our vision and sharing these lessons with others. Audition Story In this week's bonus episode, Ben shares an experience back in Chattanooga when he had to choose between playing on the school's soccer team or doing theater. He couldn't do both. We're often reluctant to ask for help because of the social threats involved—uncertainty, risk of rejection, the potential for diminished status, and relinquishment of authority. Many people are scared to ask for help for fear of looking stupid. But how can we help young people understand why it is so important to ask for help? In this episode, I have a guest speaker – Ben Curtis. You might have heard that before; if you're over the age of probably twenty, ‘Dude, you're getting a Dell' you probably remember Ben Curtis. Ben Curtis was an actor from the Dell commercials who publicly hit a massive rock bottom. And today, he was a guest on the Think Unbroken podcast. Ben and I connected a few years ago on social media and have watched so many of the incredible things he has done come to shape and fruition but also, he and I have become pals, and it's amazing to watch this man's journey. ************* LINKS & RESOURCES ************* Learn how to heal and overcome childhood trauma, narcissistic abuse, ptsd, cptsd, higher ACE scores, anxiety, depression, and mental health issues and illness. This week's guest is Ben Curtis – an internationally recognized actor, musician, public speaker, mental health advocate, and life coach. But you'll probs recognize him from the infamous: “Dude, you're getting a Dell!” commercials. Nowadays Ben's mantra is Dude, You're Getting Well! (also the name of his podcast). As a creative person, I know you put yourself out there ALL THE TIME which means you face high-highs & low-lows AKA abundance & rejection are part of the deal. So I invited Ben to drop by the show to share his tools for self-care, compassion, and healing… or as he describes it: The Upside of Stress! And let me tell you, the dude did not disappoint: Unlock stress's positive side effects to stay in the game Normalize stress → it's an integral part of creativity Train your mind to reframe stress – this way you won't hide under the covers when things get tuff This episode gives you real tools to navigate the *potentially* stressful holiday season plus this way you can look Aunt Janet in the eye when she asks you: How's that artistic-life thing going? And... Ben totally had me break character; he turned the tables and got me to talk about my own personal flavor of stress… And I'm pretty sure you'll see yourself in this story! So often do we lie to ourselves out of fears and limiting beliefs that talk us out of what feels right for our soul. It's easier to stay where we are then to step beyond our edges, despite knowing something is waiting for us on the other side. That's why In today's episode, I brought on Ben Curtis to share his comeback story from drug addiction to running a seven-figure coaching business. This is a replay of one of our most popular episodes. See the original show notes and links below... This week is the Open Championship at historic Saint Andrews Golf Club. It is the last major of the PGA season. It also marks the 19th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship as a 300-to-1 long shot. When Ben Curtis hoisted the Claret Jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. Anyway, this was an interesting episode that we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since this is the week of The Open Championship. Lastly, I must admit I'm biased when it comes to Ben Curtis since he is a fellow Kent State Golden Flash alum. He is also doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org. ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of the prestigious U.S. Think Unbroken with Michael Unbroken | CPTSD, TRAUMA and Mental Health Healing Podcast
In this episode, I have a guest speaker – Ben Curtis. You might have heard that before; if you're over the age of probably twenty, ‘Dude, you're getting a Dell' you probably remember Ben Curtis. Ben Curtis was an actor from the Dell commercials who publicly hit a massive, massive rock bottom. And today, he was a guest on the Think Unbroken podcast. Ben and I connected a few years ago on social media and have watched so many of the incredible things that he has done come to shape and fruition but also, he and I have become pals, and it's amazing to watch this man's journey. And I asked him to come and be on the show to share his journey into where he is today, in being a coach for men and helping them move through shame, guilt, and judgment. I thought to myself, like, reading and understanding what he does, I was like, who else would be better to have this conversation than a man who had a headline on CNN titled ‘Dude, you're getting a Cell'. Ben's journey is phenomenal, captivating, and interesting. I think one that many of us go through where we find ourselves hitting the magnitude of rock bottom again and again and yet, still reaching, still striving, still wanting to try to make life better and figure that journey out, and so much of this journey starts with asking for help. In this conversation, Ben and I go deep into that and how it's impacted our lives individually. This is an emotional conversation; we're going to talk about some of the heaviness of life here. I want you to know coming into this that; this is a space where the baseline reason I created this show was to have conversations exactly like this; then, my hope is the thing that you take away from our conversation today is understanding that the difference between where you are and where you want to be in your life often begins which is simply ASKING FOR HELP. I'm very excited to welcome my friend Ben Curtis to the show! Learn more about Ben Curtis at: https://www.bencurtis.co/ Learn more about Think Unbroken and Pre-Order my new book: Unbroken Man. Chris shows up at the home of 2003 British Open Champion and former PGA Tour star Ben Curtis to tee up a few of the best cocktails in golf.
