Curiosity is the intentional pursuit of understanding — a leader's commitment to asking questions, exploring diverse perspectives, and continuously learning rather than assuming they already have all the answers. It's the mindset that transforms uncertainty into opportunity. "There is always another way to look at something. If you don't think there is, you haven't looked hard enough. This week we finish out our LA neo-noir series with the revolutionary Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Robert Zemeckis directed this adaptation of Gary K. Wolf's 1981 novel, Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, a hilariously smart satire that leads hard-boiled private detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) on a journey to prove one of Toon Town's biggest stars, Roger Rabbit (voice of Charles Fleischer) is not guilty of murder. Together they must clear Roger's name and save him from the dreadful Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd). Nominated for 6 Academy Awards and winning 3, the film was an astonishing blend of live-action and animation, creating new technology along the way. It is also the only film to include characters from both Disney and Warner Bros. together onscreen. We're off next week, but we'll be back with some holiday cheer in December!

One of the oldest and most recognizable studios in Hollywood, Warner Bros. is considered a juggernaut of the entertainment industry. Since its formation in the early twentieth century, the studio has been a constant presence in cinema history, responsible for the creation of acclaimed films, blockbuster brands, and iconic superstars. In The Warner Brothers (UP of Kentucky, 2023), Chris Yogerst follows the siblings from their family's humble origins in Poland, through their young adulthood in the American Midwest, to the height of fame and fortune in Hollywood. With unwavering resolve, the brothers soldiered on against the backdrop of an America reeling from the aftereffects of domestic and global conflict. The Great Depression would not sink the brothers, who churned out competitive films that engaged audiences and kept their operations afloat―and even expanding. During World War II, they used their platform to push beyond the limits of the Production Code and create important films about real-world issues, openly criticizing radicalism and the evils of the Nazi regime. At every major cultural turning point in their lifetime, the Warners held a front-row seat. These days, the studio is best known as a media conglomerate with a broad range of intellectual property, spanning movies, TV shows, and streaming content. Despite popular interest in the origins of this empire, the core of the Warner Bros. saga cannot be found in its commercial successes. It is the story of four brothers―Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack―whose vision for Hollywood helped shape the world of entertainment as we know it. Paying close attention to the brothers' identities as cultural and economic outsiders, Yogerst chronicles how the Warners built a global filmmaking powerhouse. Equal parts family history and cinematic journey, The Warner Brothers is an empowering story of the American dream and the legacy four brothers left behind for generations of filmmakers and film lovers to come. This Paramount 1933 Studios Year by Year episode features two of the studio's defining stars of the era: the Marx Brothers, in their final, most famous, and (maybe) most nihilistic Paramount film, Duck Soup, directed by Leo McCarey, and Gary Cooper, miscast (or maybe not) in One Sunday Afternoon in the role that would go to James Cagney in the Warner Bros. remake, The Strawberry Blonde. We zero in on Groucho's authoritarian anti-authoritarianism and Cooper's embodiment of a charismatic man's class resentment. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we share our first experience with the cinema of Nouvelle Vague primitivist Luc Moullet, his quirky and candid examination of second-wave feminism's effect on his relationship (and anatomy), Anatomie d'un rapport (1976) Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: 1933 and Paramount 0h 06m 53s: ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON (1933) [dir. Black Friday sale! Use code BLKFRI50 for 50% everything on the Decorating Pages Shop site on Black Friday through Cyber Monday. In this Thanksgiving edition of Decorating Pages, I'm giving thanks for the prop houses and vendors that keep film and TV sets alive.I'm joined first by Fausto from Hollywood Studio Gallery, one of Los Angeles' most important art rental houses. He shares the history of HSG, how he went from “shipping and receiving” to 35 years in the gallery, what changed when clearance rules tightened, and how they curate artwork for everything from kids rooms and hospitals to the White House. Then I talk with Set Decorator Rich Murray (Only Murders in the Building, The Penguin, The Diplomat). Rich breaks down his favorite New York and East Coast prop resources – Newel, Eclectic Encore, Prop N Spoon, State Supply, Gotham Props, Fennec Props – plus the auction houses and antique warehouses in Connecticut, New Jersey, Philly, Hudson and beyond. We talk about sending trucks out for estate sales, using museum collections for cleared art, and how those “one stop” prop houses in LA compare to the patchwork system in New York.If you love set decoration, production design, prop houses, and behind-the-scenes craft, this is a full-on love letter to the people who help us dress sets, solve clearance problems, and keep the doors open in a tough economy.Listen in for shout-outs to Warner Bros, Universal, History for Hire, Advanced Liquidators, Nest, Newel, and many more – and for a reminder of why losing even one prop house is such a huge loss for the industry.Topics:History of Hollywood Studio Gallery and art rental in LAHow clearance really works for artwork on film and TVLA prop houses Kim leans on for everyday sets and period piecesNew York prop houses and auctions Rich uses for Only Murders, The Penguin & The DiplomatEstate sales, antique warehouses, and museum collections as design toolsWhy decorators are genuinely thankful for prop houses

After ignoring weeks of theatrical disappointments, moviegoers fell under the spell of Wicked: For Good last weekend to the tune of almost $150 million in North America. Who does the industry have to thank for that total? Women, who made up 70 percent of the opening audience. Elaine Low, Sean McNulty and Natalie Jarvey examine how the fairer sex have been largely underserved at the box office this year, while Vanity Fair's all-bro Hollywood cover boys like Glen Powell (The Running Man) and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere) struggled to pull their weight as movie stars. Plus, Prestige Junkie's Katey Rich lays out the key storylines as the Oscar race heats up — including what she's hearing from voters (nope, they still haven't seen all the movies) and why Warner Bros. is sitting pretty with best picture frontrunners One Battle After Another and Sinners. My guest on this episode of the podcast is Mikołaj Barczentewicz, a professor of law at the University of Surrey and the author of EU Tech Reg, a blog dedicated to following developments in the EU regulatory machinery. In this episode, Mikołaj and I discuss the digital omnibus package that was recently proposed by the European Commission and which aims to reform and simplify, among many other things, the GDPR. A draft version of the digital omnibus had been leaked a few weeks before we spoke, but we waited until the formal version was unveiled by the EC to record this podcast.Among other things, we cover:The genesis of the Digital Omnibus package: why was it proposed in the first place, and what it aims to achieve; The specific changes to the GDPR proposed in the package; The scope of the opposition to GDPR reform; The implications of digital omnibus reforms on the EU's domestic AI industry;Whether any genuine progress been made against the recommendations made by last year's Draghi report; The current status of Pay or Okay in the EU and in the UK;Whether the DMA might be softened in response to pressure from the Trump administration. Thanks to the sponsors of this week's episode of the Mobile Dev Memo podcast:Xsolla.
