Retro House Mixtape

Hello there. How have you been? It's been a while hasn't it? I haven't dropped a new episode of Retro House Mixtape since before Christmas 2021. I've been on a bit of a break (and I kinda still am) but I had some time to throw a mix together this week so I figured "why not?". Boom! Out of the blue it's another episode of Retro House Mixtape and this week it's another 'Speed Garage' set. Oi Oi! Sorry it's been a while since the last episode but I've now got a new mix all ready to go. It's a set of tidy bangers, kicking off with some funky, garagey vibes before sliding into something a bit more driving and heavy. Hope you like it! It's been 25 years this week since Norman Cook put out the Fatboy Slim debut album 'Better Living Through Chemistry'. I thought it would be interesting to put together a mix based on the tracks from the album. Not just a normal mix though, I've been diving into the tracks themselves to pull out loops and samples which are sprinkled through this DJ set. It's a little chaotic but then again that seems on theme when you're talking about Fatboy Slim.  

I'm totally switching things up for this episode of Retro House Mixtape as we ditch the retro and dive into a mix of upfront house tunes. This is a mix of three parts as we journey from the bar, to the club and then end up with our hands in the air at the festival. 

I'm tapping into a funkier vein of House Music for this episode. Things kick off with a new release from Dave Lee and Horse Meat Disco. I'm very much breaking my own 'Retro House' rules here but this is a classy, timeless sounding tune and I couldn't resist. I also managed to finish with a classic from Frankie Knuckles which was apt seeing as it was recently Frankie Knuckles Day. Happy Frankie Knuckles Day everyone!

Seeing as it's August it felt like a good time to throw together some summer-tinged house tunes. Fitting in with the summer theme, it's worth noting the background image used in the cover artwork. It's a photo I took of lovely Bournemouth beach, just a stone's throw away from where I live (technically a stone throw and a half but you get the idea).

It's time to switch things up on Retro House Mixtape with a new episode based round late 90's/early 2000's Trance bangers. Check it out for some hugely euphoric screamers that will undoubtedly lift your spirits.

I initially didn't feel like putting a mix together this week but after sinking a few whiskey's and jumping on the decks the tunes soon started flowing. In the end I'm pretty happy with the results. 

I felt like throwing together an early 90's set this week. The original plan was that it would be a set of early 90's funky U.S. Garage but things kinda got away from me. Along the way things morphed into a bit of a rave vibe (playing Energy Flash right at the end was a particular joy). I almost bailed on recording an episode this week as I was a bit under the weather but at the last minute I stumbled across an old archive of mixes and dug this out from April 2010. There's some good stuff in here that I totally forgot about. 

For this episode of Retro House Mixtape we take a trip back to approximately ten years ago, roughly around the 2009/2010 mark. Around this time house music was going through a bit of an electronica phase and that's what this mixtape is packed full of. 

With the Easter weekend done and dusted it felt like a good time to throw together a few tunes with a summer kinda vibe to them. Warmer days are coming and soon we'll be able to go outside and actually see friends face to face. When you do, make sure to stick this mixtape on as you soak up the sunshine. Good times are on their way.

Aaaaaaaand we're back. After a few months off it's time for some new episodes of Retro House Mixtape. I'm kinda rebooting things a little bit. Previously I've avoided playing tracks more than once but after 100 episodes I think it's time to relax that rule a little bit and break out some tunes that deserve another dusting off. Yikes! Here we are, 100 Episodes of Retro House Mixtape. For this episode it's an extra-long mix of some of my all time favourite house tunes. 

It's the final step in our trip through the 90's as we dive into the crazy year of 1999. A year when funky disco licks and euphoric trance ruled the house roost. Turn it on and turn it up!

As per the last few episodes we move another year further into the 90's and it's a mix of two halves which very much reflects my record buying habits of 1998. It was mostly either funky/disco house or more trancey based fare. There are some cracking retro house tunes in this set. 

1997 was a huge year for House Music. Big tunes were dominating the dance floors before dominating the airwaves on radio and tv. This episode is a mix of huge tunes and some lesser known bangers from 1997.

It's another trip back to the 90's as we head into the mid-decade decadence of 1995. The year when I started DJing on the regular in various bars and clubs in the town where I grew up. It was certainly an exciting year for the 17-year-old me. 

It's a bit of a personal journey in this week's episode of Retro House Mixtape as we head back to 1994 and when I bought my very first set of turntables, 

It's gearing up to be a crazy hot weekend here in the UK so here is a mixtape to compliment the weather. It starts on a Balearic tip before going into a funky summery vibe and climaxes in a full-on carnival. 

It's a shorter episode than usual this week but that doesn't mean you're missing out on much. There's nearly as many tunes packed into this set as there are in a normal length episode.

It's a very different episode this week thanks to an old Instagram post from last year. I posted about a compilation that I had picked up called 'House Breaks Sessions' and I commented on doing a Breakbeat Mixtape at some point. A friend of mine, James from The Freefall Collective, promptly lent me a bunch of tunes to put together for an episode. Lots of breaks and big basslines in this ep!

Retro House Mixtape is two years old! Two whole years since I first came up with the idea for the show. How the time flies! Thanks to everyone who has been along for the ride and shown their support during this time. This week's show is a slightly extended episode with some up-for it tunes. It's a bit of a cracker! 

Time for another fix of House Music from the corners of my record collection (and hard drive). It's a more clubbier selection compared to last week (do check out the previous episode, it's packed with uplifting tunes) with some funky accapella re-works thrown in too.

Are you ready for another trip into some old skool house? I've got you covered with this episode consisting of some tasty tunes from the late 90's and early 2000's. I've been messing around with acappellas a bit more than usual this week. There's a tasty SL2 / Basement Jaxx mash-up that I might put out on Soundcloud at some point so keep an eye out for that. 

Frankie Knuckles once said that House Music was Disco's Revenge. That statement was the basis for this week's episode. I wanted to record an episode that runs at a slightly lower tempo and works as a warmup mixtape. The kind of set that would fit perfectly for that late afternoon/early evening slot on a sunny day. This episode starts with an old Royksopp/Incognito bootleg that I made in the early 2000's (I really should make an updated version) before swerving into a full on disco re-edit session. There are some irresistibly funky jams going on in this episode. I really enjoyed putting this one together. Hope you like it too. Hey there! Hope you are doing well and staying sane during the on-going lockdown. It's a different approach to this episode as I pick out a random track from the collection and start building a set from there (as opposed to the usual planning that happens ahead of time). Aaaaaaand here it is. The final episode of Retro House Mixtape for 2019. Last year I did an extended ‘Big Fat End of 2018‘ episode and for this year it's another bumper set of bangers from years gone by that will fire up any Festive/New Years party that you might be having. In other news, Retro House Mixtape is taking a little hiatus for a few months. Yep, after 76 weekly episodes I decided that the end of 2019 was a good time to take a short break from doing the show. It's sometimes funny how these episodes come about. A lot of the time it's as simple as thinking of that first track and building from there. I had this opening track by Eve Gallagher pencilled in as an opener for weeks now with the intention of building it into a melodic, clubby set that climaxed with some big epic tunes. Following last weeks little nostalgia trip, it's now time to break out the first brand new episode of Retro House Mixtape for the New Year. It's a funky selection of vocal-based house music with a little kick at the end. I wanted to do something a little different for Episode 20 of Retro House Mixtape and as luck would have it something perfect was happening on the same day as this episode. One of my all time favourite bands, The Prodigy, were releasing their latest album ‘No Tourists'. I've been lucky enough to catch them live on three separate occasions and every time they have torn the roof off the place. It's not often that a new Prodigy album comes around so I couldn't resist putting a mix together to mark the occasion. For this mix I've picked out various bootlegs and remixes that I have stumbled across over the years.
