Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series: it's Part 2 of Chuck's chat with his close friend, legendary bassist Carol Kaye. This time around, they're joined by Chuck's bassist buddy, Ammo. Carol is one of the most prolific bass guitarists in rock and pop music, playing on an estimated 10,000 recordings during a career spanning over 65 years. She actually started doing session work in 1957 on guitar, and after a bassist failed to turn up to a session in 1963, she switched to that instrument, quickly making a name for herself as one of the most in-demand session players of the 1960s. She's appeared on sessions by Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Monkees. The intro on Glen Campbell's “Wichita Lineman”? She came up with that. Of course, that's also Carol plucking away on The Beach Boys albums Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), Pet Sounds, and Smile. Most famously, Kaye's bass lines are the driving force behind “Good Vibrations”, one of her many number 1 hits. Here's just a few of the many things that Carol discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: Brian's psychological difficulties; A nerd's fantasy: a rundown of her equipment; The corruption she experienced firsthand while working for Motown; The music she liked and didn't like playing; The particularities of the legendary studios in which she recorded; And just setting the record straight in general, about absolutely everything. Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. Chuck and legendary bassist Carol Kaye are close friends, so this exceptional interview goes incredibly deep in its search for the truth. Most famously, Kaye's bass lines are the driving force behind “Good Vibrations”, one of her many number 1 hits. Here's just a few of the many things that Carol discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The truth about Mike Love; The first time she crossed paths with Brian Wilson; Working with Murry Wilson; The three times that Carol had Brian and Marilyn over to her house. When is your vibe important in business settings? What is the right vibe for interviews, crises, sharing bad news, and career conversations?
Peter Greenberg in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1977, White enrolled at Boston University to study journalism. While in school, he worked in a record shop in Brookline, Massachusetts, named Good Vibrations, where his singing was heard by musician Peter Greenberg of the Lyres. White adopted the stage name Barrence Whitfield to avoid being mistaken for superstar Barry White and began performing with Greenberg and former members of the Lyres as Barrence Whitfield & the Savages STARR AND THE CZARS, hailing from Washington, DC, bring together an all-star line-up of garage-rock veterans into one explosive new band. Fronted by JAKE STARR (Adam West, Jake Starr & The Delicious Fullness, Go Mod Go!, Goy Division…), the group also features PETER GREENBERG and MICHAEL LEWIS, two legends from Boston's trailblazing DMZ. After their time in DMZ, Greenberg and Lewis both carried the torch in Lyres, cementing their reputation as key figures of the late '70s and early '80s garage revival. Greenberg later went on to co-found The Customs and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, while Lewis added his bass guitar work to bands such as The A-Bones, Yo La Tengo and The Schramms. Starr, meanwhile, became a fixture of Washington D.C.'s garage scene.
Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's chat with Dr. Paul Tanner, inventor (with Bob Whitsell) of the Electro-Theremin, which he also famously played on three Beach Boys tracks: “I Just Wasn't Made For These Times,” “Good Vibrations,” and “Wild Honey.” Paul passed away a few years later in 2013, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure. Here are just a few of the many things that Paul discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: How he got the idea for the Electro-Theremin in the first place; The differences between the theremin and Dr. Tanner's simpler device; His days playing trombone with the Glenn Miller Band; The 1958 record Music For Heavenly Bodies, which was the first full-length LP to feature Paul's instrument; Being asked to join The Beach Boys on tour; And what happened when a different Wilson brother hired Paul for a session date. It turns out that the whole world wobbles. Everything has a natural frequency - the rate at which it moves when disturbed - be it a cup of tea, a building or a human organ.Even more incredibly, if an external force matches an object's natural frequency, it causes it to absorb that energy and vibrate with increasingly large waves; and that can have consequences, from helping a spider find its lunch to making a bridge collapse. On the trail of good and bad vibes and everything in between, Hannah and Dara investigate whether the famous 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the USA was really down to resonance, explore examples of resonance in nature, and find out what this mysterious vibration can do to the human body: from the pressures of repetitive tractor-driving, to absorbing the reverberations of certain instruments...To submit your question to the Curious Cases team, please email: curiouscases@bbc.co.ukContributors: - Helen Czerski, Professor of Physics at University College London - Wanda Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at Warwick University - Phillip Moxley, Senior Research Associate at the University of Southampton - Sana Bokhari, sound therapy practitionerProducers: Lucy Taylor & Emily Bird Executive Producer: Alexandra FeachemA BBC Studios Audio Production

Greg Alba & Andrew Gordon dive into Us (2019), the critically acclaimed horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope). A chilling exploration of duality, privilege, and hidden societal truths, Us follows Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave), as she takes her family on a beach vacation only to be confronted by terrifying doppelgängers known as the “Tethered.” Alongside Nyong'o, the cast includes Winston Duke (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War) as her husband Gabe, Shahadi Wright Joseph (The Lion King 2019, Hairspray Live!) as daughter Zora, and Evan Alex (Mani) as son Jason. The film also features standout performances from Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale, Mad Men) and Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric Awesome Show), whose chilling turns highlight Peele's ability to blend suburban normalcy with pure terror. From the unforgettable opening scenes at the Santa Cruz boardwalk to the haunting “Hands Across America” imagery and the now-iconic reveal of Red (Nyong'o's Tethered double) with her eerie, rasping voice, Us has become one of the most analyzed and highly searched horror films of the past decade. In this full reaction & review, Greg and Andrew break down Peele's masterful use of symbolism, the shocking home invasion sequences, the underground world of the Tethered, and the legendary final twist that redefined how audiences see Adelaide's story. Whether it's the chilling “Good Vibrations” sequence, the scissor imagery, or Nyong'o's tour-de-force dual performance, Us remains a milestone in modern horror cinema. Chuck Granata's book Wouldn't It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is the ultimate dissection of Brian Wilson's 1966 masterpiece. Chuck and I wound up diving so deep into the record, we unfortunately had to seek treatment for the bends…thankfully it was a risk worth taking, as Discograffiti's Pet Sounds Deep-Dive Series stands as a unique combination of factual obsession and personal connection. Episode 3 is an examination of everything you'll ever need to know about the remainder of Pet Sounds' Side 1: “Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder),” “I'm Waiting For The Day,” “Let's Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B.”Here's just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:Brian Wilson's studio preparation for the production of “Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)”;What Brian feels is “the one cut off the album I didn't really like that much”;The Burt Bacharach song on which Brian had felt he'd subconsciously based “Let's Go Away For Awhile”;The stunning original intention for the final planned Pet Sounds session, before that date was used to knock out the entire mix of the LP;Brian's Great Bahamian Folk Song Swindle;A full half-hour interview with Sid Sharp, whose string section played on virtually all of Brian's string dates, including both Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations” (in The Director's Cut only); And how both Chuck and I connect with “Don't Talk,” “I'm Waiting For The Day,” “Let's Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B” in a laid-bare, explicitly personal way.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. Don Randi is a keyboard player, songwriter, arranger, bandleader and one of the most prolific session musicians in history. Don was born in New York City but raised in the Catskill Mountains where he studied classical music. He moved to Los Angeles in 1954 and, by the early 60s, Don was leading his own groups and working with a who's who of now legendary artists. Denny Tedesco is a film producer known for the documentaries "Immediate Family" and "The Wrecking Crew" although Mr. Tedesco has worked on films over the years as a set director, lighting technician, grip and location producer.Maggie, Don & Denny discuss the revolving cast of musical characters we now know as The Wrecking Crew and later we discuss the extraordinary musical legacy of Brian Wilson who passed away June 11, 2025 at the age of 82. Brian Douglas Wilson was an American musician, songwriter, singer, and record producer who co-founded the Beach Boys. He was born on June 20, 1942, at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, California and passed away on June 11, 2025 at the age of 82 in Beverly Hills. Brian Wilson has been frequently called a genius for his compositions and recording techniques and is regarded as one of the most significant songwriters in popular music. His best-known work is distinguished by high production values, complex harmonies, orchestrations and vocal layering. In 1961, Brian began his professional career as a member of the Beach Boys, serving as the band's songwriter, producer, co-lead vocalist, bassist, keyboardist, and de facto leader. After signing with Capitol Records in 1962, he became the first pop musician credited for writing, arranging, producing, and performing his own material.By the mid-1960s he had written or co-written more than two dozen American Top 40 hits, including the #1 hits "Surf City" (1963), "I Get Around" (1964), "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965), and "Good Vibrations" (1966). He is considered among the first music producer auteurs and one of the first rock producers to use the studio as an instrument. We dedicate the show to Brian Wilson, there will never be another so bright and so brilliant! Brian Wilson gave us Good Vibrations, Surfin' U.S.A., and the soundtrack to summer itself. But behind the Beach Boys legend was a man fighting demons most of us can't imagine—hallucinations, trauma, addiction, and mental illness. He didn't quit. He turned pain into purpose, and failure into brilliance. This is The Real Story of Brian Wilson.
On The Other Side of Midnight, Lionel ridicules cable TV channels like MSNBC and personalities like Stephen A. Smith. He also talks about accents getting people into and out of trouble as well as the life and legacy of Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson. Lionel spends the next hour talking about Golden Throats covers of iconic songs from Sebastian Cabot's wacky cover of "It Ain't Me, Babe" and William Shatner's performance of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Lionel in the third hour highlights comedy greats from the 70s, Depend adult undergarments and who Mrs. Calabash was, the woman Jimmy Durante always referenced in his radio sign-off. Lionel wraps up the show talking about psychology behind comedy, remembering Brian Wilson and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The male European fiddler crab attracts his mate by performing a courtship dance. New research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology says that dance isn't just notable for its visuals — it's notable for its vibrations, too.Researchers observed four different stages of the crab's courtship dance, each stage escalating the amount of seismic vibrational output. "It's 'come and find me in my underground house, ladies,'" says Beth Mortimer, a study author and biologist at the University of Oxford. Interested in more seismic vibration communication?
