It's been decades since house and techno music exploded out of South Side Chicago and inner-city Detroit, and most Americans still don't know their dance music history. In 1977 a DJ named Frankie Knuckles moved to Chicago to spin and remix disco records at an underground club called The Warehouse. Out of a fringe subculture that formed there - gay and African-American - house music would emerge to become one the biggest club music genres in the world. Meanwhile, young black futurists of Detroit channeled their city's post-industrial decay into a utopian machine music known as techno. APWW #619 Produced by Marlon Bishop and Wills Glasspiegel

We're still buzzing that we handed over Room 2 to someone who lives and breathes the music – the brilliant Neil Craven.“Initially falling into dance music through the sounds of the late Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles and loving the soulful house and disco sounds they played, it progressed into a love of pretty much all forms of dance music,” says Neil. From the Old Skool 88–92 Acid House era to the early progressive sounds of labels like Stress, Jackpot, Bedrock and Skinnymalinkey, Neil's DJ journey started in 1994, took a 17-year pause, and reignited in 2014. Since then, he's been building back with serious groove – playing everything from House, Techno and Progressive to Disco, Edits and Old Skool.Room 2 is all about eclectic sounds, deep, diverse, and full of heart. FFRR (Full Frequency Range Recordings) sits right at the fault line where Chicago house crossed the Atlantic and rewired the UK. While the name itself comes from Decca's post-war high-fidelity recording tech, the label's real cultural impact landed decades later, when London Records relaunched FFRR in the mid-to-late '80s as a home for emerging club music. At that exact moment, Chicago house was exploding, raw, drum-machine-driven tracks from pioneers like Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principle, Marshall Jefferson, and Lil' Louis were reshaping dance floors, and the UK was hungry for it. FFRR became one of the key conduits for that sound. By licensing, releasing, and heavily promoting Chicago house records in Britain, the label helped translate a gritty, underground Black American club culture into a mainstream UK rave and house movement. Tracks like Baby Wants To Ride, French Kiss, and Tears didn't just chart — they educated an entire generation of DJs and clubbers. In short: Chicago invented it, FFRR amplified it, and UK dance culture was never the same again. Tracklisting: 01. Club House - Deep in My Heart (Funky House Version) 02. In the wake of Disco Demolition Night in 1979—a cultural bonfire that seemed to signal the end of disco—something unexpected began to rise from Chicago's underground. This episode traces the story of Frankie Knuckles, the Bronx-born DJ who became known as the “Godfather of House.” After the backlash against disco pushed the genre out of the mainstream, Knuckles found refuge in Chicago's Black, Latinx, and queer nightlife scenes, most famously at a club called the Warehouse. There, he pioneered a new sound: blending disco's heartbeat with gospel, soul, electronic drum machines, and experimental edits. What emerged was “house music,” named after the Warehouse itself, a genre that spoke directly to marginalized communities while later exploding into a global phenomenon. We'll explore how Knuckles's artistry and innovation not only kept dance floors alive after disco's so-called death but also transformed music history. By tracing the arc from the ruins of Disco Demolition to the rise of house, this episode reveals how moments of cultural rejection can spark radical creativity. Frankie Knuckles didn't just keep the party going—he built a new world of sound that would change the way the world dances. In this eighth episode of season two of Soundscapes NYC, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares discuss the life and work of Frankie Knuckles with Micah Salkind, author of Do You Remember House?: Chicago's Queer of Color Undergrounds (Oxford University Press, 2018). Micah Salkind is the Director of Civic and Cultural Life at the Rhode Island Foundation. Prior, in his roles as Deputy Director and Special Projects Manager at the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture and Tourism, he managed large grants and strategic artist initiatives for the City, collaborating with non-profit cultural institutions as well as its emerging artists, designers, and creative entrepreneurs. We'll explore how Knuckles's artistry and innovation not only kept dance floors alive after disco's so-called death but also transformed music history. ...so, the final Vocal Booth Weekender is off and running - sadly, I couldn't be there with the Family to see her off, so Saturday morning's "Risin' " session was my personal tribute - 3 hours of some of the many favourite choons from my previous sets there, along with a couple that I would have spun this year, and I know that I haven't even scratched the surface here!! It's been a fantastic ride since 2009, and I am so grateful for what it's given me - another Family, amazing memories and events, and all set to the backdrop of stellar music provided by stellar DJs!! South Africa's DJ Lag is to gqom what Frankie Knuckles is to house. An early pioneer of the raw, minimal and bass-heavy electronic style since the 2010s, he has gone on to popularise it around the world with a wealth of solo EPs and high-profile collabs. Last year, he dropped his second album, The Rebellion, which ushered in a new era that embraced Afro tech, amapiano, drill and hip-hop, all having previously worked with the likes of Beyoncé and Tyla. He played Dekmantel Festival back in 2022 and now makes an overdue entry into our mix series with a widescreen showcase of his musical world, including some unreleased tracks from himself. It's Afro-centric but roams from silky smooth and deep jams to crisp metallic steppers via warped dub, always with an empowering energy that makes you puff your chest and put your best foot forward.

In the fifth episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares sit down with the legendary DJ Nicky Siano. The history of dance music in 1970s New York is synonymous with the life and work of Siano. He was among the early attendees of David Mancuso's Loft dances, where he learned to organize parties and DJ for an audience. Siano transposed Mancuso's informal gatherings to a proper discotheque called The Gallery (1972-1977,) which he co-owned and DJed. At The Gallery, Siano pioneered techniques such as beatmatching, EQing, and using three turntables to fashion a proto-disco sound through his preferred selection of funky soul and R&B records, inspiring a host of celebrated figures like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. The Gallery was a seminal 1970s nightclub that laid a blueprint for iconic New York clubs like the Paradise Garage and Studio 54. Siano is perhaps most well-known for DJing and being fired from Studio 54 for his unconventional methods. For Siano, music was more than pleasure. It was a source of empowerment, a refuge, and spiritual salve that has enabled him to persevere and thrive as a DJ in New York during the Seventies and beyond. In this conversation, Siano illustrates the power of music that animated his involvement as an activist in the Stonewall riots. As a DJ, Siano has maintained his belief in the capacity of music to bring people together, despite social differences, and as a healing force during the AIDs era. In this conversation, Siano traces his evolving romance with music, echoing his enduring salvo: Love is the Message. What a journey and what an enjoyable set to play....Hope you like it as much as I did playing it

For RA.1000, we take it back to the source with two never-before-heard tapes from Frankie Knuckles's private collection, the Godfather of House. There is no house music without Frankie Knuckles, literally or figuratively. The queer icon's luxurious DJ sets at Chicago's Warehouse gave a rising movement its name. From there, countless offshoots splintered and travelled the globe. But what did the genesis and growth of the sound really feel like? The Godfather of House left behind not only timeless records, but personalised cassettes with hand-drawn liner notes handed out to friends and family. Two of those, dated to 1989 and 1996, have been digitised especially for RA.1000. (Thank you to the Frankie Knuckles Foundation.) To put that in context: the first tape predates not only many of today's active clubbers, but the entire existence of jungle, drum & bass, UK garage, French touch, Jersey club, Afrobeats, IDM, baile funk, hardcore, footwork, dubstep, dub techno, tech house, breaks, minimal, maximal, gqom, gabber, grime and hyperpop. In short… that's a very, very long time ago. The world of dance music was much smaller. DJ culture was functionally unrecognisable from the one we see in 2025. And yet, to some degree, what you'll hear on RA.1000 hasn't changed at all. It's a capture of not only what made Frankie Knuckles one of the beloved pioneers of first-generation dance music, but what draws people to club culture in the first place. The mood on these Frankie Knuckles sets outlasts even its creator: a spirit of optimism that floods the world's best dance floors and keeps dance music pulsing on into the future, nearly 40 years later, in spite of it all. We end our 1000th mix celebrations here because it all starts there. Find the tracklist at ra.co/podcast/1018. The Loft was a dance party series organized by DJ David Mancuso in his Manhattan warehouse apartment at 647 Broadway from Valentine's Day 1970 to June 1974. The parties offered an alternative to New York's commercial nightclub scene. The invitation-only events featured an egalitarian space for music and dance with a top-of-the-line sound system, eclectic musical selections, and a racially inclusive and gay-friendly mix of guests. Attendees included the city's leading disc jockeys such as Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, and Frankie Knuckles, who launched their careers in next generation clubs like the Paradise Garage, The Gallery, Chicago's Warehouse, and The Saint—  all influenced by the Loft.  In the premiere episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, host Ryan Purcell introduces co-host Kristie Soares, in conversation with music and dance historian Tim Lawrence, to contextualize David Mancuso's Loft. Lawrence is a Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of East London's School of Arts and Digital Industries. He is the author of Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-79 (Duke University Press, 2003), Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92 (Duke University Press, 2009) and Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor, 1980-83 (Duke University Press, 2016). Nicky Siano is a true pioneer – a legend that has shaped the very DNA of dance music. Before the superstar DJs, before the mega-clubs, there was The Gallery and Studio 54 – and at the heart of it all? Nicky Siano, driving dancefloors wild with his flawless beat-matching across three decks. In our conversation, Nicky takes us back to where it all began – launching The Gallery and hiring future icons Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, hosting stone-cold divas like Loleatta Holloway and Grace Jones, orchestrating the infamous Bianca Jagger birthday party at Studio 54, and reflecting on how the culture and community of this movement has kept it alive for generations.FOLLOW US Instagram: @houseculturenetSpotify: House Culture - Perfect PlaylistYouTube: @houseculturenet|| Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseculture. Finally broke my Soul of Sydney duck.  I went to their very first party at Sydney Park maybe 14 years ago with my then two little boys.  The youngest who was only two took to it like a duck.  He dragged me into the middle of the makeshift dancefloor and started dancing.  He didn't want to leave.Fast forward to 2025 and I'm the one behind the decks spinning vinyl classics from 91-94.  It was a beautiful sunny day and the vibe reflected it.  Smiley happy house heads everywhere you looked.I wasn't sure what I was going to play, but as set time approached Terry playing before me was putting some thickness out of those speakers, so I started with something chunkier to match - Frankie Knuckles 2005 hit - Back In The Day.From there it was back to back classics, not the big obvious ones, you hear them all the time at classics events.  No this was the cool stuff that we all loved but it stayed very much underground. The only exception is towards the end when I decided to drop my latest track - Beautiful Persons.  It samples Beautiful People which meant it fit nicely alongside tracks more than 30 years older. So many kind words from everyone after the set.  Such a wicked crowd, as most older crowds are, knowledgable, friendly, want to have fun, and don't have their phones out all the time - THEY ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE MOMENT!!!Huge thank you to Phil & Sam for having me onboard.  Well done to the other DJs, the music was solid from start to finish.  And we can't leave out the energies bunny that is Mirrah Reflects

Here we go with the start of a new month and with it a new mix of fresh new sounds.I actually ran out of new tunes, it was a well discussed topic in the chatroom as to whether I had enough.  So I decided to end the mix with two of my own tracks, Can't Play which was my second track made and my latest one, Beautiful Persons.I was also so happy to be able to play a track I melted in 1998 in my attic room in Nottingham.  I got excited when Defected bought Strictly Rhythm's back catalogue but The Believers, Heather Wildman - Gotta Keep Holding On wasn't released.  Imagine my surprise when it suddenly shows up in Traxsource!Locking in the guest DJ for this month, Tony Garcia of Rotary Disco fame.  He produced the excellent remake or Nights Over Egypt - Over Pyramids that appeared in last months mix.  One of the nicest guys in the scene, I can't to have him on.For those of you in Sydney you can catch me next on Feb 16th playing for Soul Of Sydney who are doing a Frankie Knuckles tribute event.  Looking forward to spinning vinyl from across the decades for a very appreciative older crowd. Finally - it was nice to be able to pay respects to the late, great Michael Procter.  Another of house musics great male vocalists.  R.I.P. brother.Tracklisting:1: KC Flight - Voices2: 16B, Omid 16B -Trail Of Dreams (Dirty Dream Mix)3: Cezar Touch - Slappin & Clappin (Hector Moralez Remix)4: Dreamer G, Kerri Chandler - I Got That Feelin' (Demuir's Playboi Dub Edit)5: Bonetti - I Can't Give You Up6: Sean McCabe, Hanlei - Now Is The Time7: The Believers, Heather Wildman - Gotta Keep Holding On 8: Zetbee - For Your Love10: Foo Funkers - Love Enough11: Michael Procter - Fall Down (Grant's Club Vibe)12: Frits Wentink - About You13: hugs! - Set Me Free14: George Smeddles - Festival Track15: Jasper Street Co. - Solid Ground (Doo Dew Solid Mix)16: Walter G - Omakla17: Max Kion - Revival18: Klaus Veen - Poison19: Renaud Genton - In A Flash20: Vincenzo Gerri - All I Need21: Max Kernmayer - Exclusive Selection22: Intrallazzi - Pik Nik (The Cube Guys Mix)23: Joeski, Héctor Lavoe - Dia De Ayer24: c2eMusic - Beautiful Person25: c2eMusic - Can't StayEnjoy!
