Cultivate Catskill is an all volunteer group dedicated to the beautification of their village. It all started over a dozen years ago when Shelly Pulver, who has lived in Catskill for 55 years and President of the organization, saw an email about hanging baskets. She thought that installing them along Main Street was something that could be done. Over a dozen years later, the village, with a population just under 4000, has over 90 hanging baskets along both Main Street and Bridge Street to the delight of the local residents.. Joining Shelly in this endeavor is her long-time friend, Robin Smith, who is a native Catskillian, Treasurer of the organization, and has been a Master Gardener Volunteer for over 20 years. The two of them along with another dozen volunteers get together every year to help plant pride in their community. In addition to the hanging baskets, they install brightly colored annuals in numerous urns and other containers, care for multiple pocket parks adding seasonal flowers, and make the downtown shopping district attractive and inviting for visitors and residents alike. The local Tree Council, spearheaded by Hudson Talbott and now part of Cultivate Catskill, has planted over 76 trees in the village along Main Street and more recently in the cemetery. They even worked with the Village Board to create a Tree ordinance to protect and maintain the local trees. Their combined efforts have contributed to a kind of renaissance of the downtown area. To get started they worked with a national organization, America in Bloom, which helped to prioritize their efforts and provided a framework that helps revitalize other municipalities. With their guidance and a lot of hard work, the Bank of Greene County and the Department of Public Works have become great supportive partners in this initiative. To fund their efforts, they have sold memorial bricks, held cookie sales, applied for grants, hosted a Holiday House tour, and still hold monthly Trunk Sales (on the 2nd Saturday of the month between May and October). They decorate for all seasons including funding Holiday snowflake lights (complete with swags that cross the street). Working with local merchants, they organized 'Caturday' and Winter Solstice Strolls events, became an official non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and have gradually expanded their focus beyond Main Street. Uncle Sam's Bridge becomes a feature during the summer months adorned with window-boxes overflowing with multi-colored flowers. The Howard Street and Mott Street slides (alleyways) get attention, as do the Blue Star Park, Policeman's Park, Leggio Park, and now Dutchman's Landing. Recently, working with the local Fortnightly Club, they built a Sprayground (a.k.a. a spray playground) at Elliott Park for children and adults to enjoy during the summer months. Volunteers are always welcome especially to weed and water. Listen in to learn more and potentially apply this approach to your community. A charitable group in Corner Brook threw open the doors of its "Holiday House" yesterday. It's a festive twist on a haunted house that had been an annual tradition for the organization. This year, Holidays for Hope could not find a suitable venue for its Halloween event - So it came up with a new idea. CBC's Amy Feehan stopped by and spoke with some young volunteers with the group to find out more.

Tonight we're chatting with Leslie Lutz, author of the new book SWEETEST DARKNESS from Holiday House. SWEETEST DARKNESS is a supernatural horror novel in which a teenage psychic is drawn deep into the honeycomb of an abandoned hotel—and into a cat-and-mouse game with a predatory entity. This is Dark Americana, from the crumbling Hollywood glamor of the Alvarado Hotel, to the neon-lit diner where the final showdown happens, to the shining horizon of the Chihuahuan Desert just outside town. It's a horror set in a moody Southwestern landscape. Leslie Lutz is a young adult author whose poetry and prose have been widely published and whose debut YA thriller, FRACTURED TIDE, was voted best of 2020 by Suspense Magazine and was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard pick. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and daughter, along with three cats and two spoiled chickens.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

It's summer and hopefully you're kicking back somewhere, recharging the batteries with plenty of blue sky and sunshine. It's at times like these, perhaps strolling along the beach with our partner, nothing urgent to be done and plenty of time to think, that the thought might pop into our head “wouldn't it be great to spend more time here. I wonder what it costs to buy a holiday house?” Conveniently, real estate agents will have their windows brightly broadcasting all the various potentials to satisfy your desire. As a Financial Autonomy listener though, you are likely the prudent, perhaps even cautious, member of your little tribe, so perhaps your mind might turn to the factors that ought to be considered when contemplating a holiday home purchase. Over the years I've worked with many clients who purchased holiday houses, so this week I thought I'd share with you a few of my observations. [Website] [Disclaimer]

Alyssa—a longtime “Swiftie”—leads us in a deep dive into the history of Holiday House, Taylor Swift's oceanfront mansion in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The co-hosts turn their attention to “the last great american dynasty,” a track off of Swift's 2020 album Folklore, from which we learned that, just like us, she too enjoys digging into the history of her own home and learning about the people who lived there before her. In the song, Swift sings about the fascinating life of Rebekah Harkness—an American socialite who purchased Holiday House in 1948 with her second husband, Standard Oil heir William Harkness. Following her husband's death, Harkness spent much of his fortune hosting lavish parties, buying her own ballet company, and pissing off her neighbors in the small resort community of Watch Hill along the way. After scouring through old newspapers and reading ‘Blue Blood,' the out-of-print biography on Rebekah's life, Alyssa breaks down the song line by line, revealing which of the wild anecdotes mentioned in the song are true (did Rebekah really dye her neighbor's dog key lime green??), which aren't, and what's missing. She also shares her own theory about the lyrics, and why she thinks they may suggest that Holiday House is haunted by Rebekah's ghost. Later, the co-hosts discuss Swift's own struggles since buying the home in 2013, including her many (horrifying) encounters with stalkers trying to gain access to the property. CW: This episode includes a lot of talk of child neglect and abuse as well as suicide, so please take care in listening. We recorded this episode on August 19th, 2022 for our Patreon feed, where we read chapters 11-14 from the Rebekah Harkness biography by Craig Unger, Blue Blood. We've recapped our notes and thoughts over on Patreon for the last year. Now, we've edited them down and we'll be releasing each Book Club episode for y'all on the main feed to join us on this rollercoaster journey of a book! **Keep in mind we learned more about all of these people in the book later on, so not everything we say here is with context from later chapters** After a brief discussion of Taylor Jenkins Reid's underwhelming follow-up to Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Malibu Rising, we go over some pretty intense chapters concerning the Harknesses and Rebekah's treatment of her children and grandchildren. We also discuss the parallels between Edith Harkness and Taylor; And Edith's psych hospitalization after her suicide attempt at Holiday House… or as she calls it “her Peter Pan episode”… At the end, we discuss a mysterious virtual memorial for Edith Harkness, which you can find here. In this episode we discuss that while shopping for a home during the holidays remember to schedule appointments in advance. With people so busy it can be a little more challenging for sellers to have their home ready. When looking at homes with holiday decor try to envision what that space would look like without the extra clutter. Homes can feel cluttered and small during the holidays. When choosing dates for important events in the home purchase process make sure to ask around. Check with each of your industry professionals before writing the offer.

I'm Jonathan Case - a cartoonist from the great Pacific Northwest. I love to make art, to write stories, and to go on adventures with loved ones - especially if there's a hammock involved. Daddy's sleepy. Stuff I've done: My 2015 graphic novel, The New Deal (author/artist, Dark Horse), was a nominee for the Reuben, Harvey, and Oregon Book awards for best graphic album. In 2012 I snagged an Eisner award for Green River Killer, A True Detective Story (Dark Horse). My other books include Dear Creature (author/artist, Dark Horse), Batman '66 (artist, DC), Superman: American Alien (artist, DC), and Over the Garden Wall: Distillatoria and Over the Garden Wall: Circus Friends (author, BOOM!). I'm currently working on a new graphic novel, Little Monarchs (author/artist, Holiday House), which is a sort of a joyful post-apocalyptic adventure book for kids. In addition to comics I paint murals, create book covers, and illustrate for print. You can find some of that up on walls around Portland, Oregon (our current home base). My chief adventuring partners are my wife, Sarah, and our two daughters, Dorothy (pictured), and Miriam. Our son Otis, who we lost in 2016, tags along in spirit. https://jonathancase.net/

Hello friends, and welcome back to The Best of LKN podcast. I have a really special episode for you today. If you've been following The Best of LKN for a while, you may recall an article we wrote for the blog featuring the 9 Top Lake Norman Realtors on Instagram. The idea of the article was to share some Instagram marketing advice for small business owners from a few of the most prolific professionals in the Lake Norman area. I felt very lucky to have received input for that article from THE MOST followed Lake Norman real estate agent on Instagram, Tracy Pray Bradshaw. Tracy is an agent/broker with Allen Tate Lake Norman. When Tracy and I connected, we talked at length about the article we were writing and how she could contribute, and during those discussions, Tracy introduced me to a charity fundraising initiative she created back in 2018 that benefits foster kids in the Lake Norman community. I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to share with our audience, so I invited Tracy to join me on the podcast to share the story of her fundraising event - Pop Up Holiday House.Pop Up Holiday House was launched in 2018. Tracy's vision was a luxury parade of homes style event that would gather select vendors of premium goods and services, and showcase one of the premier homes in the Lake Norman area. I'll let Tracy share the details about the event in our conversation, but suffice to say for now that the event was an immediate success and continues to grow in scale year after year. The beneficiary of the Pop Up Holiday House charity fundraiser is the Children's Homes of Iredell County. The goal: to provide a Christmas experience for kids in foster care. Joining us in this episode is Brenda Speece. Brenda served with the Children's Homes of Iredell County for over 30 years, and recently retired as their Executive Director. In this conversation, Brenda shares how the Pop Up Holiday House event has helped make a positive impact on the lives of the children in foster care.Stay with us after the conversation so I can give you more details on how to get involved with the Pop Up Holiday House this year. For now, lean in with me, and get to know Tracy Pray Bradshaw, Brenda Speece, and the Pop Up Holiday House fundraiser for the Childrens Homes of Iredell County. The Children's Homes of Iredell CountyPop Up Holiday HousePartners:Cozy Boutique: Saturday, November 6th - 10am-5pmLilly & Grace with Michelle McCoy Designs: Saturday, November 13th - 10am-5pmTrump National Golf Club: Saturday, November 20th - 9am-1pmTracy Pray Bradshaw was featured in the article “9 Top Lake Norman Realtors Share Their Best Instagram Marketing Advice.” Read it HERE.Special thanks to Tiffany Ringwald Photography.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/epicjourneymedia)
We're back and in honor of August sipping away like a bottle of wine, it's time to reflect on Folklore. We're doing a track-by-track analysis, theorizing on the line between fiction and reality in the Taylorverse, discussing Taylor's ability to draw a universal feeling from a wildly niche vignette, and generally deep diving left & right. Buckle in, babies. Sidebars this week: Facebook Marketplace finds, “you'll never get away from the sound of the woman who loves you,” Madeline's pre-Folklore connection to Holiday House, Taylor Swift's real estate investments, Hannah turning into a snob about vinyl, Nicole Kidman's accents and wigs, is Jack Antonoff weird??, Strawberry Wine by Deanna Carter, Sally Rooney and Brandy Jensen in conversation with Illicit Affairs, Jill Gutowitz predicting Taylor's bear suit Instagram, and Taylor's cheugiest lyrics.
On her Grammy-winning album Folklore, Taylor Swift regales listeners with a tale of the eccentric dance patron and philanthropist Rebekah Harkness — who once owned Swift's Watch Hill, Rhode Island mansion (aptly named "Holiday House"). But there are way too many peculiarities to Rebekah's story than could ever fit within 3 minutes and 50 seconds. That's where we come in. From fish tanks filled with Scotch to missing bodily remains — with appearances from Salvador Dali, LBJ, and B.K.S. Iyengar along the way — our detailed retelling of Rebekah's life and death has got a little something for everyone. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lyricsforlunch/support
