A journey through 35 years of house from the godfather of UK rave. In popular mythology, the '90s are without question, the halcyon days of dance music—an era of free raves and unadulterated hedonism. It's a myth that Matthew Nelson, AKA Slipmatt, knows better than most–he was there. During the late '80s, as the rave scene in the UK began to boom, Nelson began moonlighting as a DJ. He would land his first residency at Raindance, the East London rave that launched in September 1989 and would become the UK's first legal rave. By 1991 , he'd reach number two in the UK charts with "On A Ragga Tip" as one-half of SL2 and two years later, sell over 10,000 copies of SMD#1. Nelson has got a lot to share (as you'll see in his interview) so we'll let him do the talking. He's been variously called the godfather of rave and happy hardcore, but what you'll hear on RA.958 is as "a journey through my 35 years of house." A DJ with this much pedigree brings much more than that, of course: touching on the breakbeat, jungle and acid house that soundtracked that golden age, as well as nods to the rich cross-pollination with scenes beyond the UK, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You." People tend to remember the first time they see BEIGE DJ—and a lot of the times after, too. One RA editor described them as "doing some crazy shit" after seeing a set. The Detroit DJ is all about playing to party rock, but also gently subverting expectations. It's a cliché now that good DJs can make whole new tracks out of blending existing songs together. Few embody this as easily or effortlessly as BEIGE, who loves to take sounds you already know and present them in a context you've never heard them in before. BEIGE started DJing after they moved to Detroit roughly a decade ago, and has since become a vital DJ in the Motor City's ecosystem, bridging gaps, scenes and genres. Their DJing style is adaptable and versatile, but you can count on a few things: a techno foundation, rollicking drums, throbbing basslines and vocals coming at you from all angles. Their RA Podcast flows beautifully, with just the right amount of bumps and left turns to keep you from getting comfortable. And the edits? There's plenty of head-turning moments here, like DJ Chap's downtempo drum & bass remix of seminal emo band American Football, a 150 BPM version of "Energy Flash," a cheeky Skrillex flip from Darian and excellent weirdo beats from the freakier ends of the US underground, including producers like Davis Galvin, Alien D and the late Jasen Loveland. @justbeige Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/939

For millennial music journos like us, Simon Reynolds is one of the Goats. He's a writer best known for his era-defining book on dance music, Energy Flash and the ultimate history of post-punk, Rip It Up And Start Again. But there's barely a genre that Simon hasn't touched, from hip-hop, shoegaze and glam rock to pivotal essays on Auto-Tune, “conceptronica” and the hardcore continuum.Reynolds' newest book is a collection of essays, interviews and reviews on the idea of “futuromania” –his word for electronic music's obsession with the manifesting the future. Futuromania kicks off in 1977 with Donna Summer's ‘I Feel Love' and sweeps up half a century of electronic genius, with writing on household names (Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Future), underground icons (Acen, The Mover, Omni Trio) and nebulous trends like the ambient revival.Unsurprisingly, we couldn't squeeze all of that in a single episode. But we did talk to Simon about the lure of accelerationism, dance music's middle-aged desires, Daft Punk's yearning for the “mass synchrony” of the ‘70s, the uncanniness of Boards of Canada, and how he learned to stop worrying about retromania and start loving Dry Cleaning. Plus: he gave us the scoop on his next book! We think it's an exclusive!!Thanks for listening to No Tags. Japanese electronic music mainstay Gonno is back with another quality EP in the form of Taiwanese imprint JIN's 8th release. The label, which usually focuses on dancefloor oriented 4/4 from Asian talent, has featured many prominent artists from the region including Mr. Ho and Sunju Hargun. JIN08 consists of 4 tracks, 3 Gonno originals backed by a Voiski remix. The B2, Arabica, serves as a beautiful ambient closer, serving as a perfect complement to the preceding three tracks, juxtaposing all the emotions from the other tracks with the melancholy and nostalgia that comes at the end of a fun night out. From bubbly, happy house on “Energy Flash” to IDM on “Final Hate” to Voiski's synth-oriented reinterpretation of “Energy Flash”, the EP continues Gonno's streak of avant-garde dance floor goodness that we have come to expect. JIN08 is available for pre-order now, and will be out on September 29, 2023, digitally via the label's Bandcamp and on vinyl on the One Eye Witness website. write up by https://soundcloud.com/sabro96 https://jinrecords.bandcamp.com/album/jin-08 https://soundcloud.com/gonno https://soundcloud.com/jintaipei https://www.instagram.com/djgonno/ https://www.instagram.com/jinrecordstaipei/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_____delayed/ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Joey Beltram”. “Joey Beltram” started DJ-ing at the young age of 13 in Queens, New York. In 1990, Joey had his breakthrough hit “Energy Flash”; which became a classic. Take a listen to it here. Joey used the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer to craft the unique, spacey overtones of “Energy Flash”. This was innovative at the time. In addition to this, "Energy Flash" release, had a profound effect on the EDM techno scene. During this time, European techno had a firm grip on the genre but with the release of "Energy Flash", a bridge between American and European techno was created. “Joey Beltram” became a highly influential figure in EDM and with his release of “Energy Flash” he helped shape the direction of what techno is today. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Lunar Disco: Start – 17:42   and   End – 24:23Hailing from France, Lunar Disco is a duo consisting of Kate Elsworth and Nicolas Blistene. According to the company the reason for the increase is to invest in more product offerings,

Along the way things morphed into a bit of a rave vibe (playing Energy Flash right at the end was a particular joy). I'm thinking of doing an old skool rave set at some point so this was something of a warm up. Find the track listing on my blog - retrohousemixtape.com

Simon Reynolds is generally held to be one of the world's best music writers - not least by us at the Quietus - so we're very happy that he's the special guest on our radio show/ podcast this week. Following on from such great books as Energy Flash and Rip It Up And Start Again he has written Shock And Awe: Glam Rock And It's Legacy which is out on Faber & Faber. Simon joined John Doran at tQHQ yesterday morning for a breakfast chat about the genre - a chat which turned out to be very enjoyable and informative despite the very early hour occasionally playing havoc with the presenter's higher brain functionality. (Who the hell is Oliver Wilde when he's at home?) The former Melody Maker heavyweight, who now lives and works in the US, selected all the music for the show - a mix of deep cuts by famous bands, all out bangers and junk shop glam rarities; and the pair discussed such artists as David Bowie, Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, Lady Gaga, Marc Bolan, Japan and Roxy Music, as well as class, gender and Brian Eno's collapsed lung.

The Underground is Massive: How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America (Dey Street Books)  Ask any millennial: electronic dance music (EDM) is this decade's rock and roll. Rolling Stone has called EDM the “defining youth culture of the 2010s” but—like hippie culture in the 60s or punk rock in the 70s—it's about more than music. In The Underground Is Massive: How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America, author and music journalist Michaelangelo Matos chronicles the history of EDM and its meteoric rise from drug-fueled warehouse raves to an estimated $6.2 billion business. The first comprehensive history on the EDM movement in the United States, The Underground Is Massive examines the U.S. electronic dance scene from its beginnings in Detroit and Chicago with acts like Frankie Knuckles and the Belleville Three to its current apex, where performers like Daft Punk and Skrillex sell out arenas all over the world. In the face of such a massive history, Matos expertly explains how and why EDM has evolved from an underground scene to dominating mainstream youth culture today. He discusses dance music's rise in tandem with the Internet, exploring the idea that ravers and EDM fanatics were partially responsible for powering the information revolution of the new millennium. He also delves into the scene's relationship with illegal drugs, from cocaine to Ecstasy to nitrous oxide, and links the changes in EDM fans' drugs of choice to the evolution of the music. Based on hundreds of exclusive interviews as well as a score of vintage fanzines, mailing list archives and out-of-print books and magazines, The Underground Is Massive joins the ranks of the classic music histories like Please Kill Me and Can't Stop Won't Stop.  It tells the bizarre yet fascinating story of a drug-fueled, misfit music subculture that turned pop culture on its ear by remixing the relationship between music, sound, drugs and money in ways that fans, and the industry, could not have predicted. Praise for The Underground Is Massive “An EDM bible.”—Chloe Maassen, Insomniac.com “Matos is the perfect person to create a book of this magnitude.”—Mike Walkusky, EDM.com “We're excited about this book. Matos...has long been one of the few U.S. music journalists who consistently write about electronic dance music with intelligence and insight.”—Andy Hermann, LA Weekly Michaelangelo Matos attended his first rave in 1993 and began writing professionally about electronic dance music a few years later. A regular contributor to Rolling Stone, NPR, Red Bull  Music Academy Magazine, Wondering Sound, and Beatport, he is the author of an acclaimed volume on Prince's Sign ‘O' the Times for Continuum's 33 1/3 monograph series. He lives in Brooklyn. Simon Reynolds is the author of seven books about pop culture, including the rave chronicle Energy Flash,  the postpunk history Rip It Up and Start Again and Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past. Born in London but these days living in LA, he's currently writing a book about glam rock. In addition to writing for magazines including The New York Times, The Guardian, Pitchfork and The Wire, Reynolds also maintains a bunch of blogs centered around Blissblog http://blissout.blogspot.com/
