Monday afternoon state lawmakers will discuss the latest attempt to get more homes built in Minnesota by limiting local zoning rules. Supporters say those rules block development, making it harder for people to find homes they can afford. This is the third year in a row that a group of housing advocates and Republican and DFL lawmakers tried to loosen zoning restrictions from the state Capitol. The previous bills failed, with opposition from local government leaders. Expect delays, detours, and, let’s be honest, some frustration. The project? It’s a big one—widening ramps, adding collector-distributor lanes, and improving traffic flow. But first, the closures: I-285 Northbound: Cascade to Bolton, nightly Jan. 5–9, with single-lane closures starting at 9 p.m. and double-lane closures at 11 p.m. I-285 Southbound: Donald Lee Hollowell to MLK Jr. Drive, same dates and times, with alternating lane closures. I-20 Westbound: Anderson Ave. to Riverside Parkway, nightly closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. I-20 Eastbound: Riverside Parkway to I-285, alternating lane closures nightly. Break: INGLES 3 STORY 4: Cobb lawmakers react to U.S. strike on Venezuela Cobb County lawmakers are weighing in on the U.S. military’s strike in Venezuela, which ended with the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The operation, ordered by President Trump, has sparked a firestorm of reactions—both praise and sharp criticism. U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, called the move “decisive and courageous,” hailing it as the end of a “tyrannical regime” and a chance for a brighter future for Venezuela. But not everyone’s cheering. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Rome, slammed the strike, questioning its consistency with Trump’s stance on Ukraine and accusing the administration of prioritizing foreign conflicts over domestic issues. “Why is it okay when we do it?” she asked on X. Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Marietta, echoed concerns, demanding clarity on the strike’s legality and its potential to destabilize Venezuela further. Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Georgia, went even further, calling it a “broken promise” from a president more focused on foreign oil than Americans’ struggles. Cobb County Police say they responded to a call around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 at 300 Pat Mell Road, near Austell Road. When officers arrived, they found 47-year-old Jerry Sampson Jr. with a stab wound. He was rushed to the hospital but didn’t make it. The suspect, 50-year-old Zuberi A. Douglas, was arrested the next day at the same apartment complex where the incident happened. Break: STORY 6: Mac’s Chophouse scores 64 on health inspection, owners say violations are being corrected     Mac’s Chophouse, a Marietta Square favorite, hit a rough patch, scoring a 64 on its health inspection—an unsatisfactory “U” grade. Co-owners Randy McCray and Chef Mike Fuller didn’t shy away from the news. “This score doesn’t reflect who we are,” they said, calling most violations “administrative” rather than food safety issues. The inspection cited nine problems, from improper handwashing to black buildup in ice machines. A half-eaten burger on a prep table? Not a great look. McCray admitted, “We fell behind during a busy season.” They’ve since cleaned house—literally—and are prepping for a re-inspection by Jan. 9. STORY 7: Wheeler falls in title game of Hoophall West  Darius Wabbington was unstoppable. Minnesota teachers have done a three-peat for the National Rural Teacher of the Year.The National Rural Education Association bestowed the honor last year to Melissa Oberg, who teaches special education in Grand Marais. In 2023, it went to Morris teacher Jenny Maras. This year's honoree is Jeff Granrud. He teaches math at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School. That's a district of about 1,300 students an hour west of the Twin Cities in Wright County. Granrud joined Minnesota Now host Nina Moini to talk about his nearly 30-year career in teaching.

 The third annual PNW Survival Games kick off this Friday at a campground in Molalla. Fifty people, organized into teams of two, will compete in a series of weekend-long challenges designed to test their outdoor survival skills, from building a fire and shelter to purifying water and building a raft from saplings and other foraged materials.    Participants who register for the $495 event are first taught the basics of those skills by survival instructors, some of whom have competed in reality TV shows such as “Naked and Afraid” and “Alone.” Each team then launches into a timed challenge to test their application of that skill, but with a twist – like trying to build a fire while shivering and cold after a plunge into the river. First, second and third-place teams win cash prizes and outdoor gear from sponsors.    PNW Survival Games’ co-founders Tony Peniche and Phil Robinson have aspirations to take their concept beyond its Oregon roots onto a much bigger stage by transforming it into a reality TV show picked up by Netflix or Amazon. They join us to share their vision and a preview of this weekend’s competition, along with Tom Ratts, a Vancouver resident who was part of a team that won first place in 2023 and who now volunteers at the games.  

Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey welcome Dr. Naomi Choi, a third year resident at Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Choi received her Undergraduate degree from UCLA with a Bachelors of Art in Sociology. She received an MBA from Quantic School of Business and technology on a full ride scholarship as well as completing post-bac work at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. She went on to complete her Podiatric Medical degree from Samuel Merritt University.  Dr. Choi has an interesting and non-traditional background as she had the opportunity to travel to South Korea and be a translator for the First Lady of Korea. She also worked internationally as a clinical research associate in Lucca, Italy and Potsdam, Germany. Join us, as she dives into her fascinating story about how she found podiatric medicine. Her diverse background provides her with different perspective and she has applied this to her podiatric medicine career. She holds 9 provisional patents (as a resident!!!) and her innovation work has received first place awards at the Columbia University: Hack Health and MIT: Hacking medicine “Grandhack” competitions. Despite her incredible accomplishments, Dr. Choi is kind, humble and transparent as she discusses her passion around innovation and serving vulnerable populations. Hungry for History returns for it's third year with activities spanning the City of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties.  It kicks off on Saturday, August 23rd, and runs through Monday, September 1st. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or someone looking for a fun family outing, there's something for everyone. In this episode of Tourism Tuesday on The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Renee Bayliss from Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau, along with Brian Daly from Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters Museum, and Rick Kriebal from Newtown History Center to give details about the event. Hungry for History brings together local historians, food enthusiasts, and community members to celebrate the region's rich history and culinary traditions. Food and drink play a central role in the Hungry for History event. Renee highlighted several culinary collaborations. Visitors can sample the official cider of the Virginia 250th commemoration at Winchester Cider Works or enjoy historic-inspired dinners at local restaurants like Bonnie Blue Southen Market & Bakery and Vault and Cellar. For those interested in more immersive experiences, the La Grange Family Farm will host a Tavern Night featuring historic cakes and cider, while a special presentation at Valerie Hill Winery will delve into the long history of the vineyard's early 19th-century building. The event also welcomes the Slave Dwelling Project, which aims to educate the public about the lives of enslaved people. This important initiative adds depth to the historical narrative and is sure to be a poignant part of the celebrations.
